2000pts ulthwe tourney army
« on: January 28, 2002, 07:03:42 AM »
HQ
80   Avatar
572   Seer Council- 5 Farseers, 5 Shuriken Pistols, 5 Witch Blades, 5 Ghost Helms, 4 Mind War, 1 Fortune, 5 Warlocks, 4 Destructor, 5 Witch Blades, 5 Shuriken Pistols, 1 Enhance
125   Wave Serpent- Star Cannons

Elites
189   10 HB- Exarch, Executioner, Acrobatic
125   Wave Serpent- Star Cannons
227   10 SS- Exarch, Plasma/Haywire Grenades, Scorpions Claw, Crushing Blow
125   Wave Serpent- Star Cannons

Troops
211   16 Black Guardian Defenders- Star Cannon, Warlock, Shuriken Pistol, CCW, Conceal
211   16 Black Guardian Defenders- Star Cannon, Warlock, Shuriken Pistol, CCW, Conceal

Fast Attack
130   2 Vypers- Bright Lances
Total: 1995 Points
This is a tournment army designed to be fast and mobile with a core of guardians to form a firing shield. The Wave Serpents will move at 24" turn one to get into position and by turn two the weak flank of the enemy will be swept away. The strong flank will have been under attack by the guardians and vypers. Then the force will repeat the attack. The Seer Council, although expensive, is very deadly, able to dish out 4 Heavy Flamer and 4 Mind War assaults per turn before chargining into hth and slaughtering the survivors. This force is based around taking the initiative and using speed and hitting power to destroy an entire flank of the enemy force. THis force will be fielded against SM, DE, and probably Tau although other armies are possible.

Any comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

this is a really nice army!  the only problem i see happening is if your one Fortune fails.  if that happens you can bet every available shot will be centered on your expensive seer council.  other than that it looks really nice.  hope this helps.

You could just add Runes of Witnessing to your farseer with fortune for your extra 5 pts.
I agree, it looks like an awesome army. Actually i'm considering using a rather similar army soon in a 1500 pts tournament:)

*Rolls up sleeve*

Here I go again!

Your HQ; that's a LOT of points, and the Avatar is basically a gratuitous addition to it. I understand that it's a cool model and all, but if you want a mobile army, drop it. I'll tell you what to get in its stead soon enough.

On a practical note, exchange the Ghosthelms for Runes of Witnessing. They're far more useful for their points. Demon attacks aren't that big a deal, I'll have you know.

Also, get rid of one of those Destructors and get Embolden instead. You really don't want that squad overrun, do you?

Your Elites are expensive, but then again, Elites are the Eldar's game. Only one note; if you're getting a Scorpion's Claw, don't get a crushing blow. There are only two units that that extra point of strength will matter for (remember, it's not doubled with the Claw), and that's the Talos and Wraithlord. Simply put, either exchange the Scorpion's Claw for a Biting Blade or drop the Crushing Blow.

The Howling Banshees look pretty good.

On another practical note, I don't really see the purpose of the Striking Scorpions. The Seer Council can take care of high toughness low save models, and the Banshees the converse; low toughness high save models. But do you really want another unit simply to simulate the Scorpions? It seems pointless.

You don't have enough troops. First, max out those squads; it'll help your composition score (which, sadly, will be pitifully low so far); now give those Warlocks Singing Spears. However, I would suggest a drastic change. If you drop the Scorpions, you could invest in some Rangers, giving you some much needed fire support.

And finally, no Wraithlord? Normally I would praise you for such an action. But this time, it's silly not to take one. Consider it; all you'll have on the board at the start of the battle are three Wave Serpents and two Guardians Squads. DEFINITELY perfect for shootier armies. If you were to play against a shooty army, you'll go down very, very rapidly. And if you go second... your skimmers can be penetrated. Ouch.

Finally, when you get to the thick of it, you have to realize that you only have six squads. That won't be too useful for claiming objectives. And concerning the Seer Council offensively; it takes YEARS for it to kill a single squad. While your enemy sacrifices Grots and Cultists, they'll be claiming objectives while SEVEN HUNDRED points of your army are in one stupid delaying action. Quite silly, really. Besides, imagine the effects of one Lascannon in a Devastator squad in this army. Deadly. If your army has a brain, they'll smack your Seer Council Wave Serpent. And since your plan moves you 24" towards the enemy, they'll get a lot of free shots. And that's going to hurt.

i would hafta agree with chaos_cow...way to many points on the seer council...take out some points and put it towards bringin your guardian squads to 20 troops each...take away the avatar and replace it with a wraithlord (you can make up the difference from taking away wargear and such from the seer council) also make sure your vypers are in seperate squads...thats all for now

Thanx guys for all the ideas and help. Here is the updated list that im looking at fielding. I dropped the avatar and toned down the seer council into a force to support the guardians. I also added a wraithlord and some dark reapers to provide long range fire support.

HQ
258      Seer Council- 3 Farseers, 3 Guide, 3 Warlocks, 3 Augment, 6 Shuriken Pistols, 6 Close Combat
Weapons

Elites
189      10 HB- Exarch, Executioner, Acrobatic
125      Wave Serpent- Star Cannons, Spirit Stone
217      10 SS- Exarch, Plasma/Haywire Grenades, Scorpions Claw
125      Wave Serpent- Star Cannons, Spirit Stone

Troops
260      20 Black Guardian Defenders- Star Cannon, Warlock, Shuriken Pistol, Shining Spear, Conceal
260      20 Black Guardian Defenders- Star Cannon, Warlock, Shuriken Pistol, Shining Spear, Conceal

Fast Attack
65      Vyper- Bright Lance
65      Vyper- Bright Lance
65     Vyper- Bright Lance

Heavy Support
233   5 DR- Exarch, ML, Fast Shot
120   Wraithlord- Star Cannon

Total: 1992 pts
This army will be fielded against SM, DE and Tau.
Again, basic tactics are for the guardians to act as a firebase to support the serpents. But now they are backed up by the wraithlord, seer council and dark reapers to give them more firepower. Basically, the vypers hunt down enemy tanks and heavy troops like battlesuits. The dark reapers engage anything with a 3+ armor save like marines, battlesuits, incubi, etc. THe guardians blast away at enemy squads while advancing and supporting the wraithlord, who blasts away with the guardians. The seer council uses guide to ensure that the guardians and the dark reapers get to re-roll misses. THe banshees and scorpions then charge into the weakened enemy and destroy them.
Note: what should i spend the extra 8pts on?

I think this is an illegal Ulthwe army.  You have three units of Aspect warriors (HB, SS & Dr) and only two units of Guardians (either defender or storm squads).

Also, I would suggest a fortune and some witchblades for the seer council.

I would agree that it needs SOME witchblades but not too many. Witchblades are Way to expensive for what they really do. They DO offset the crappy strenght of your farseers and warlocks but for 15 points!!!!

Second. As for Mad Cows comment. Scorpions are there because they are a great all comers unit. You DON'T want to invest all of your mobile tankbusting into a single unit. The Scorpions with haywires are able to take on anything but Dreadnoughts, Termies and Assult Marine specialists(such as Berserkers).

As for the Scorpions claw...drop it. The Biting blade is a far better buy(not to mention that you can get crushing blow and a biting blade for the same cost as a Claw just makes it a far better buy.
The fact that the Claw makes the exarch strike last is a very very very bad use for a character with I6 and only 1 wound.
BTW, S8 is only useful against viechles and dreadnoughts. Against Viechles you have the haywire, and dreadnoughts will still spank your ass and the claw will only tempt you to try the impossible.

Where'd Fortune go??? Also, the Council is weak in H2H and think about putting on some Witchblades and maybe Enhance.  Also, as Fozzybear76 said, it's illegal:  you gotta put in another guardian squad or take out an aspect squad (nice catch btw Fozzybear).  Also, w/ your current army selection i wouldn't even take guide.  bs4 is pretty good already and the points could be better spent elsewhere.
