Title: 1850 RTT Chaos. Maybe something new or old.
Post by: Sanctjud on November 23, 2007, 12:35:05 PM
I'm thinking of trying something new for an upcoming RTT tourney:

HQ- DP, wings
HQ- DP, wings
T- 10 CSM, 2 Melta, Champ + Fist, Glory
T- 10 CSM, 2 Melta, Champ + Fist, Glory
T- 10 CSM, 2 Melta, Champ + Fist, Glory
T- 10 CSM, 2 Melta, Glory
T- 10 CSM, 2 Melta, Glory
FA- 10 Raptors, 2 Melta, Champ + Fist, Glory
HVY- Pred + H. Bolters
HVY- Pred + H. Bolters
HVY- Pred + H. Bolters

1850 on the mark.

11 scoring units, 5 MC/AV's, and 60 MEQ's.

The CSM will be doing leap frogging manuevers and supporting each other, that's why the lack of champ+fists in 2 of the squads.

The preds are there to add some 'cheap' vehicles that'll stay together like a wolf pack and focus fire on stuff.

DP's and raptors are there for either direct assaults or counter charges.

I've got enough melta's for vehicles when I get close enough.

I do have a lack of long range AT... so that'll be a problem, but I can't have it all I guess.

Just wanted to know what you guys think... would it be better than say:

HQ- DP, Mark of Nurgle, wings
HQ- DP, wings
T- 10 Plague Marines, 2 Melta, Champ + Fist
T- 10 Plague Marines, 2 Melta, Champ + Fist
T- 10 Plague Marines, 2 Melta, Champ + Fist
T- 10 CSM, 2 Melta, Champ + Fist, Glory
HVY- 10 Havocs, 4 Missile Launchers, Glory
HVY- 10 Havocs, 4 Auto Cannons, Glory

Something like that if I were to go with a more heavier Nurgle theme.

Thanks for input in advance.

My 2 Cents.

Setting aside the love I have for my Papa...

I'd really have to go with the first list. Just because of the sheer numbers you have over the second list. The Plague Marines do get that 'feel no pain' save, but when you have 10 more marines, plus 10 more raptors, you really can't say it's that reliable. As you stated, your second list does have a longer range to attack from, but as soon as you get your marines up close, they can really do some damage that the second list wouldn't be able to do. Your DPs take away the scariness of the three Predators, so they won't get every Anti-tank shot at them on the first turn.

If you're looking for more of a winning team, the first list would be the way to go, IMO. If you're looking for more of a fun list, Plague Marines are far better when you get to roll that feel no pain save, and to see the look on your enemy's face when he finds out only one has actually taken a wound, followed by rantings of how Plague Marines are 'Broken'. ...Good times.

That's just my advice.. Sorry Papa, you lose here.

The only problem I have is the, "when I get close enough" bit.  While I like the massive footslogging horde, I have problems with fast armies and long-range armies, both of which can deal with my footsloggers without many problems.  I'd suggest dropping a raptor and a marine squad to give the other 4 Rhinos with armor.  Dropping a second raptor and switching someone's meltaguns into flamers would be enough to get another champion with fist in the last Rhino squad, so the army would look like,

DP, wings
DP, wings
x4: 10 CSM, 2 meltaguns, Champ w/fist, Icon of CG, Rhino, armor
8 Raptors, 2 flamers, Champ w/fist
x3: Predator, autocannon, heavy bolter

Also comes to 1850 on the dot.  Change out another two meltaguns for 2 flamers and that pays for an Icon of CG on the Raptors.  More armored targets for your opponent to deal with, more mobility, and still a decent number of troops and scoring units.

If you did foot sloggers, I think the two lists are probably about the same.  The second lacks mobility but has heavier firepower.  I think the first is probably a bit better, but I might even consider breaking up the last squad and making each of the marine squads a bit bigger, maybe 12-13 each, to better absorb casualties.

Go with the first list but with a few minor changes.  Though I am not a fan of static fire bases, I would suggest losing a Pred and going with a ML Havoc squad, 4 ML with 2 CSM ablative wounds.

I would give at least the MoK or MoS to the D/Prince, its cheap!!!

At least have Power weapons on the two CSM squads!

I would like to see at least two Rhinos.  If you would integrate Rhinos I would highly suggest the IoS or IoK and simply get into CC asap.  Powerweapon for the IoS, Powerfist for the IoK!

I think you can do this minor improvements by decreasing a CSM squad size or two to eight models for example.  These small changes should fair you well.  I really like your list.  Its a lot of numbers for Chaos.
