wraithguard warlock question
« on: September 17, 2007, 06:24:01 PM »
What is a good lode out for a warlock escorting wraithguard?

and should i have one or should I rely on a farseer with warlock retinue and upgradeing them to spirit seers?

Depends on the wraith guard.

Going for the full ten, spirit seer and all that, accepted wisdom is conceal and if you can squeeze in a fortune all the better.

If your going for the serpent riding flavour then I'd still take a warlock, as they'll generally be too far away from any other seers, but as for powers, destructor can be nice, but personally I don't give the serpent riders anything.

Taking a Warlock retinue in order to get a Spirit Seer is a false economy. You're wasting more points than you save. Just give the WG a Warlock, it's simpler and cheaper.

Ishmaeil gives good advice IMO, though I would at least consider giving the Serpent-riding Warlock Conceal. It may seem like a waste on such a small squad, but considering how expensive a single Wraithguard is, I think it's worthwhile if you have the points to spare..

I am pretty much always alone on this, but my favorite setup for a warlock in a WG squad in a serpent is Destructor.  Conceal is the "duh" power for footsloggers, combined with fortune it's all sorts of fun, and most seem to think that Conceal is always the right choice.  But mechanized, in a tourney army, I always have destructor, as it allows the option of going after a larger squad of cheaper stuff if it becomes necessary.  That unit is too many points to have sitting in a corner when there aren't any optimal targets, I like having a decent second choice, especially since I usually have 2 serpent squads in my lists.
The blood drive is nothing but a pyramid scheme set up by Dracula and his evil minions.  The Bus of the Undead is likely involved as well............

Bloatedtoad, you're not alone on this :) I also tend to think that Destructor is a viable choice for a warlock in a serpent-borne WG squad, for exactly the same reasons as you mention.

By the way, is this just my poor English, or does anyone else feel that the Wraithguard entry in the codex sounds like the unit has to include a warlock in order to be mounted in a Serpent?

Tegeus, so you mean that "up to" in that phrase grammatically corresponds to both "5 Wraithguard" and "1 Warlock"? And so that part of the phrase can technically read as "up to 5 Wraithguard and up to 1 warlock"? I guess this is what confuses me.

EDIT: clarified the question's wording

Okay, here's what the entry says:

"A unit of up to 5 Wraithguard and 1 Warlock may be mounted in a Wave Serpent."

We can parse this as

[A unit] of [up to 5 Wraithguard and 1 Warlock]

or

[A unit of up to 5 Wraithguard] and [1 Warlock]

The second way would not make sense, because it entails that the Warlock is not part of the WG unit. Since we know that the Warlock is part of the unit, we must read this rule in the first way.

okay then

I guess my next question should be

should I stick a farseer in the serpent with them? cause I can fit 5 wg a warlock and a farseer in 1 serpent

My response to that would be another question: what on earth would be the point?

A Farseer isn't an optimal choice to be transported along WG since he isn't proficient in CC (where the squad have a good chance to get stuck) and his more usefull powers to backup a small squad of Wraithguard (Fortune/Guide) aren't available the turn they disembark.

If you want a backup IC to mount with the Wraithguard I'd go for an Autarch or PL for CC goodness, depends of who you're playing against.

Also, as Warlock powers go, I found that Enhance isn't halfway bad for Serpent borne squad. Tough as already stated, Destructor is better overall IMO.

It would have been way easier to first read the WS entry which says i may transport 5 wraithguard + 2 character models ;)

Imho you can't do anything wrong with conceal, when you deploy near the opponent I can see the amount of incoming plasma and melters increase rapidly.

Yes, I agree Conceal is the ONLY power to give the warlock. Sure you miss out on a nifty heavy flamer, but at 35 pts. per you need every bit of protection for these juicey targets. I usually have mine with a spear and Conceal. The spear is the same range, and just as good vs. vehicles.

I must say that when I am using them as a counter assault I sometimes give them Enhance if there is plenty of cover to hide behind. WS5 S5 I5 comes in pretty handy to mop up stuff sometimes. As I said this is a rare occassion but worth investigating in a cityfight setting where there is plenty of 4+ cover around.
And so, after much wait, BANNED

Actually I just finished a campaign with Planets you owned giving you similar stratagems as cityfight and put FNP on my WG every game! My friends just loved 10 Fortuned Concealed FNP Wraithguard!

Its a give and take conceal let's you have a better chance of living through any return fire from whatever you jumped out and hit, enhance gives you that slight edge in hand to hand that may let you go first and avoid some incoming assaults. Although in practice the people i've played wanted to stay at arms reach from my wraithguaard making the conceal-lok the better of the two options.

As far as the spiritseer upgrade, not for a transport bound unit, it's only ever been beneficial when i wanted to run wraithlords along side my wraithguard units and keep them out of pie plate range.
