To strip or paint over
« on: July 31, 2017, 08:23:18 PM »
I have a bunch of models I inherited from a friend and they have colors completely different from my own. At first I ran them as a specialist wing of my own craftworld that used their own colors, but as my army has expanded, these models look increasingly out of place. I have decided to redo them in my craftworld's colors.

My question becomes, do I paint over the existing layers with my own colors or do I strip the current paint and start over? I have read over the information page on stripping from this forum, and it seems like a decent option, but it seems like painting over them would be simpler overall. I am not a great painter by any stretch of the imagination so I would like to here other opinions on what my best option is here.

Extra info:

The models in question are painted mostly black, my actual primary colors are bleached bone and turquoise.

I've heard it is significantly easier to strip metal than it is to strip plastic, since you can be much more thorough, get all the paint off, and not damage the model.

Always strip the paint if you can.

I would say it depends on the quality of the existing paint. If the existing paint has been applied roughly you would be better off stripping and repainting. If the existing paint is good I would spray them with a white primer and just repaint them. The only downside to repainting is that the definition of some of the models detail maybe obscured.

I repaint a lot of my models. But my layers are super thin so it doesnt really show. If you could share some pics of the models I think we could give better advice.

How much time do you have?

Stripping is time consuming and if the paint has been put on think then you'll be picking stuff out of fine detail.

I've stopped buying painted models, I just don't have the time to spare on cleaning them up.

If the model has a think coat and it is mostly a single colour (undercoat) then it is most likely fine to just paint over it.

I've recently been buying a bunch of characters off eBay, due to personally liking the older metal over the new finecast (for certain models with staves and swords that like to warp and bend).

I've also picked up a few finecast models for dirt cheap.

After a few days soak in green stuff, I've found using a Dremel/rotary tool with the plastic brush bit (NOT THE METAL WIRE BRUSH) makes cleaning the softened paint off much quicker and easier. Even out of the finer details. On a vehicle I suspect this would be a breeze. Characters I did have to go back with a tooth pick or extaco blade to get some of the weird crevices. The Dremel brush does manage to get in there pretty good though.

Painting over all that black might be rather difficult without it getting thick.

Thanks all, after all the feedback it sounds like stripping is probably the best option here overall.

It is just too bad that my friend did not have a color scheme similar to mine lol.

To be honest, if you have bone primer, I'd just prime right over that. If all that he painted is in those veins and gems you are good to go.

Both of those look really cool BTW. I was thinking how much I love the all black ulthwe falcon on the old cover art for falcon kit. I love the work in the veins on your friends falcon. Looks sweet.

Your scheme is likewise awesome. Really nice work all round. But yeah if you have bone primer, I'd just prime right over that sucker. I'm usually a little bold with decisions like this, but those are just my thoughts.

Yeah, I like his stuff so too, so it will be sad to see it go.

You know... I guess there is no harm in trying to prime over it. If it loses too much, I can alway strip it like I was going to anyway.

There's definitely no point to strip paint from a vehicle, if the layer of paint is smooth enough. Details on tanks are big and not that easy to clog, especially if you're neat with your own primer.
I fight against Chaos and for Order, because it means fighting for Life against Death. There is no other battle truly worth fighting.

Stripping scale models - YouTube

80% of my 40k armies are used and I always strip them. Yes it might take some time BUT it feels like I am starting over with a new model.
