Best Painted Army in 1 month? 1750 Pt Eldar
« on: April 21, 2009, 04:51:52 PM »
As the topic name suggests, this blog will detail my attempt to paint a 1750 pt Eldar army in a month (well a month and 2 days).

I am attending the Mayhem Tournament on the 23rd and 24th of May and as is the norm with myself I am not terribly well organised. The tournament operates a 1750 pts limit and the award for best painted army also includes marks for composition, as such the list I am taking/painting is not what people might typically considercharacterfu l/good etc but it does give me full marks for composition thus leaving me in good stead to at least have a chance of picking up the award for best army.

For those not familiar with Mayhem it is a tournament held twice a year in South London/Surrey and typically has somewhere in the region of 50 players in attendance. I may well not win the best painted army but that is what I am targetting so time shall tell!

Army List:
Farseer and 5 warlocks on jetbikes
7 Pathfinders
7 pathfinders
6 Pathfinders
6 Pathfinders
6 Jetbikes inc warlock and shuriken cannon
6 Jetbikes inc warlock and shuriken cannon
Wraithlord
Fire Prism

So in total it is 46 models to paint PLUS the display base (extra painting marks).

At present I have most of the models cleaned and ready to be attached to bases which I am currently making. As something of a teaser I will leave you with a photo of one of the jetbike units (not fully assembled you will notice) on their bases (yet to be sanded) the jetbikes will be attached to the bases properly once the bases have been sanded etc!

Well, I've had to ammend the list slightly as the list didn't quite fit composition but I've painted one test figure for the army and here it is: http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/8062/pathfinderi.jpg

I'll have 4 more of these chaps finished tomorrow and planning on doing 5 a night so should be some more updates soon!

That guy looks great, keep it up with the whole army and you will be the proud owner of an amazingly painted army in no time

5guys a night seem reasonable, but dont rush it... quality is better than quantity

Oooo... Unusual painting style, but I like very much! Purple is also a wonderful colour - I'm very much looking forward to the rest of your project!

A painting guide of how you do the rangers would be very much appreciated by myself, and I expect quite a few others too!

Been having some migraines so haven't done any painting BUT i did sculpt the ranger cloak onto my wraithlord whilst watching the first half of a boring football game and here's a pic!

I can indeed do a step by step painting guide for the rangers and will once I've got my new glasses, can't see too well atm!

A Wraithlord pathfinder?  :o

That's new .. but interesting.

I'm curious how this project will develop. Good work with the GS, btw.

Taking a very long break.

Mine is based "loosely" on the one in the rulebook although that one is more like a wraithlord wearing a cape which although I thought looked cool wasn't what I wanted mine to look like, hence the cloak and the hood!

Lol, I opened it up to find it, and had opened it up on the right page! 226, though no cape. I've seen it with a cape before - tis a cool way of showing an alaitoc wraithlord!

Nice GS work!  I have trouble with larger pieces like that, always comes out looking tattered.   :-X

I'll second Jonik's request for a painting guide.

Really nice colour scheme and style - excellent work so far.

Alas good intentions but poor results again! Too much work and not enough time for painting, I have however taken a few pics as I've been painting over the weekend.

First off is a very shoddy picture of my painting area.

These are the pathfinders with turquoise cloaks, wip admittedly.

And these are the pathfinders with purple cloaks.

Here's just a shot I took of the pathfinders once all the guns had been base coated bestial brown.

The following shot is of some of the pathfinders with the first step of bone painted on the guns.

Here's a pic of the layout with positioning so far. I'm going to adopt a snow theme. I'm trying to get my hands on clear acrylic rods to attach the jetbikes and fireprism to their bases rather then the standard GW ones.

With only one model finished and 13 days until the tournament it should start getting a bit more interesting!

Hmm.  I am quite interested as to how you did the cloaks for the pathfinders.  They look quite nice, and (hopefully) did not take too long.  I'd appreciate it if you could give us a heads up on how you managed them?

I will indeed be doing a painting guide type thing, probably once all the army is done though now as I'm running way behind atm!

The eldar type monument on the display base cost me £4 in wilkinson, which for non-uk people is a sort of cheap random product store, I find those shops sometimes have something half useful in!

Tonight I've managed to slave away further on the pathfinders and now have 14 upto the satge that all they need doing now is all the gems and lenses. Probably about 20 on each one though so that will be fairly time consuming in itself, here's a pic taken in dire lighting:

For some reason the picture is scaled down and somewhat naff so here is the direct link which should be a bit better: http://www.rpenwarden.titandsl.co.uk/alaitoc/almostthere.jpg

I will be basing them on a snowscape so will be checking out some variants of your snow basing method dakota :)

Here's a wip of the a jetbike, I generally do a semi test figure before I do a whole squad just to make sure I'm going in the right direction!
