The making of a Gauss Pylon
« on: August 15, 2008, 06:51:23 AM »
Started out with the back of an alarm clock and some blue styrofoam that i clad in plastic card

Marked out "plates" in the material on the feet

Took measure of the parts from a Monolith to make the 6 "arms" on the crystal mounting

The arc was made by making a circle of thin white styrofoam and balsa wood

Used some regular construction putty to cover the styrofoam and make it smooth

Updates on progress come shortly

I was thinking about doing the same thing back in High School in wood shop. This is easy enough to make out of wood. I would smooth out the 'feet' a little bit but other than that, I feel sorry for who ever you will be facing ;)

How many are you going to make?

I'll be making just this one for now, have to see how it turns out :)

Not sure i'll have the opportunity to play that many Apoc games.
I guess i could have made the feet a little more like the Forgeworld ones, but it would also take a lot more job and i should have used another material to get it more rounded. I'll have to see how it looks when i get the arc rounded in the edges, if the feet stand out being Square, maybe I will make some other ones.

I have yet to experience a pylon on the battlefield, so if it proves to be effective and fun to include, i'll probably have to make more, hehe :D

More pictures on progress tomorrow, have been smoothing the surface of the pylon this evening and made a crystal.

Here is the pylon after sanding down the sides and covering up the styrofoam, still have some problems with getting the balsa wood to be as smooth as i want it to be.
1 more round of sanding should do the trick i hope.

at least you had it, I had so many fancy classes that I almost regretted being at my highschool. It was all worth it for sure (try to find a school that gives 4 languages + sciences as a standard package.) Now I always wanted to learn how to make metal weapons...so I had to turn to my dad (who barely knew anything about the subject, but at least he showed me how to use a grinder, now I'm more skilled than him mhuhahah, later I went to blacksmith to learn some more techniques I needed...Now I need to find someone to teachn me how to work with wood, since i need it to make handles of some weapons.

It's pretty funny how good this pylon is starting to look, but I would still go for the forgeworld one...it's just pretty cheap anyways...not like any of those other crazy expensive models.

This Gauss Pylon looks VERY good.  Looking back through the pics and the pain-staking assembly, I can tell it is a true labor of love.  Gauss Pylons are amongst the most powerful units in the game.  You should be very proud of yours.

Will be watching as this one progresses!

Almos finished now. Made some holes at some locations and painted it almost finished. I am considering making some light effects from the crystal, and then i will spray it with a clear coat to hide the shine from the transfers.

Congratulations on your nearly-completed Pylon.  I am impressed with the way you designed the Crystals - the energy pattern that you have painted (?) onto them is really cool looking and substitutes well for the standard transparent plastic.
