"Blood on the Suspensors" - Drop Troopers' Marching Song
« on: June 12, 2006, 06:34:13 AM »
I happened across a set of lyrics of "Blood Upon the Risers" (a US Paratrooper song) this morning and got inspired to mess around with it for 40K. You may be familiar with this, as it was also sung during a Band of Brothers episode. It goes to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and really puts the "Drop" in "Drop Troops" ;D

"Blood on the Suspensors"

Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

"Is everybody happy!" Yelled the sergeant, looking up
Our hero meekly answered "Yes" and then they stood him up
He jumped at thirty-thousand feet, 'twas his final training drop
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

He counted loud, he counted long, for his grav-chute to pop
He felt the wind, he felt the cold, he felt the awful drop
He pulled the cord and cried "Oh Lord!" when the plummet didn't stop
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

One suspensor fired and it spun him round and round
His arm, his legs, they flailed about and snapped with awful sound
His breakfeast spiralled out his mouth as he hurtled to the ground
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

The days he lived and loved and laughed kept racing through his mind
He thought about the girl back home, the one he'd left behind
He thought about the medics and he wondered what they'd find
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

The ambulance was on the spot, the priests were running wild
The medics jumped and whooped with glee, rolled up their sleeves and smiled
For it had been a week or so since last a chute had failed
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

He hit the ground, the sound was "SPLAT!", the blood went spurting high
His comrades, they were heard to say, "What a helluva way to die!"
He lay there rolling 'round in all the welter of his gore
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

There was blood on the suspensors, there were brains around the chute
Intestines were a-danglin' from his torn Drop Trooper's suit
They poured him from his helmet and they poured him from his boots
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
And he ain't gonna jump no more!
Yay, we made it!!!!

I've heard the original song- darn that was funny. Not a bad tune either ;)

Well adapted Lt. Helstrom. Now all we need is somebody(/ies) with a decent singing voice(s) and access to recording equipment to produce it in audio for all us 16th Divvy members to enjoy in battle. ;D

Good work.

Did anyone see the drinking song in the Second Ed books? Went something like.

Another day nearer the battle,
So drink up my lads and be brave!
'Cos another day nearer the battle,
Is another day nearer the grave!

The original song is sang in the mini-series "Band of Brothers", which I highly recommend, by the way. I'd convert my own army of 'em, if only the cadian helmets werent sooo impossible to work with.
"Kill fifty guants, or one carnifex, or else we can't go back to camp, this'll be hard."

"No it wont, there's one right there"

"He, this'll be easy, it one has one eye...."

band of brothers rocks, as does the book.

i was laughng my head off when i read this.
"only when the last stone has fallen from the last church on the last preist will civilisation ever be perfect!"
"Britain helped america fight in the war in iraq"-this statement is untrue, for it two be a war their needs to be TWO armies fighting each other! so i wouldn't realy call it a war.
"When the goings get tough, space hobbits duck and cover and eat grox jerky. Or at least that's what I'd do, were I a space hobbit." Im getting ratlings just to say that phrase to my mates GO NUBIS!

unfortunately they only sing a small part of the song.

Yeah, great job Gribb ;D

I based this more specifically off a brief 82nd AB version of the song. If you google around for "Gory, Gory" or "Blood Upon the Risers" you'll find dozens of versions, some quite a bit longer than this one.

I think he mistook ya for Helstrom?
*shrugs*

I personally think there are a lot of GREAT military songs that work for the Imperium... just look through many of the 40s songs
"Over There"
"Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition" (Emperor?)
"Wing and a Prayer"
 "Life in the Infantry"
, etc

They're just a bunch of humans taking on the big bad universe, so anything that's patriotic and brave would work.

We'll be there when the morning comes!
Screw their minds up with our guns!
We're the last thing they will see!
We're the 98th Reserve Cadian Infantry!

Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition doesn't really require any modification at all. Maybe change Lord to Emperor, but it would sort of mess up the melody.

lyrics here:

Quote
Down went the gunner, a bullet was his fate
Down went the gunner, and then the gunner's mate
Up jumped the sky pilot, gave the boys a look
And manned the gun himself as he laid aside The Book, shouting...

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free

Praise the Lord and swing into position
Can't afford to be a politician
Praise the Lord, we're all between perdition
And the deep blue sea

Yes the sky pilot said it
Ya gotta give him credit
For a sonofagun of a gunner was he

Shouting Praise the Lord, we're on a mighty mission
All aboard, we ain't a-goin' fishin'
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free

Praise the Lord (Praise the Lord) and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord (Praise the Lord) and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord (Praise the Lord) and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free

I'd say "Lord" is perfectly fitting in the 40K universe to refer to the Emperor. GW does it all the time!

That song raises an interesting question though - does the IG (or, more likely, PDF's) maintain "wet" navies? In modifying "Gory, Gory" I found that to be where most work had to be done - get the details in line with 40K. The original contained a lot of references to the way traditional parachutes work: Static lines, silken canopies, risers, connectors, suspension lines, that sort of thing.

I imagine that PDFs might. The Guard probably does not. Air/Space power in general has most likely advanced to the point that it is no longer worth it for the guard to bring down wet navies.

That's a very gory song indeed.  It certainly has that gritty "dark war-torn universe" kind of feel to it.  I can definitely see that being sung among the Elysians or the Harakoni.

perhaps change "lord" to "throne"

Generally the word "throne" is an acceptable substitute.

And here I was using "Supernaut" by Black Sabbath....or "Thieves" by Ministry!

Sorry, I think heavy metal/industrial is the ideal soundtrack for 40K.

Although, some of the German/Russian ww2 propaganda tunes would fit the vibe, with the nationalist elements modified to reflect the superiority of mankind and the emperor....

Now just get a commisar to conduct, and we'll have something.

I'd probably think so also, if I could bear listening to the stuff. ;)

at least nobody cited redneck noise as IG music.
