Title: How to play 'Mordheim Online'

Playing 'Mordheim Online'
(Its free)

How does playing 'Mordheim Online' work?

1) Make sure you have a copy of the Mordheim rules (http://www.specialist-games.com), and are aware of how to play. The rules are located inside the Mordheim section of the specialist games website, under the "living rulebook".
2) Find an opponent on the  'Mordheim Opponent finder' thread
3) Roll for a scenario using Irony Games' Dice server (http://www.irony.com/mailroll.html)
4) Create a map, or use one of the existing maps for the scenario rolled. (note: some scenarios call for specific types of maps)
5) Using PMs, or over MSN or a similar format, play the game taking turns, sending your turn to your opposition each time. Do not start a new thread and play through it, as it will take up too much space on the forum, any threads started in this way will be locked and allowed to fall into the depths of the forum.

How it works online

Each Mordheim map is created on MS Paint, and are sized 25 pixels / inch in scale. Characters are represented by coloured circles 1" (25 pixels) across, unless they use a large base in which case they are 40 pixels. Buildings are represented by different shades of grey, and difficult terrain represented in brown.

Next to buildings will also be a height, in order to work out LOS etc.

Character icons rotated onto their sides represent Knocked Down characters. Character icons upside-down are Stunned. Characters with big red crosses across them were taken Out of Action that turn. And transparent character icons represent the pre-move location of the character.

Windows are pretty easy to spot, but some have bars across them - this represents barred or boarded-up windows that can't be moved through, but can be shot and looked through.

Buildings with multiple levels require a separate map to accommodate the extra floors and roofs.

The Game turn

The game turn is mostly the same as following the rules in the Mordheim rulebook. The only differences are the slight changes needed to make the game work online.

Each player will set up their characters in their deployment zone as per the rules. This is done by opening the map in paint, opening the character files in a different window of paint, cutting them out and pasting them into the map. If there is any difference in background colour, change it at this stage.

Example of players characters sheet (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/Jonik/charsheets2.gif)
Example of a starting map in deployment zones (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/Jonik/Game-MainMapWHTurn1.gif)

Movement is done by using this ruler (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/Jonik/ruler.gif), just print it out and its ready to use.

However, do not cut and move the characters. Draw around it, and copy it. The measure how far it is to go and place the new one at this point. Recheck the distance. If it is correct, use the pipette to get the same colour as the background then fill in the old character. This is to let your opponent know what you have moved (and it also makes it easier to spot cheating).

Rolling dice

You roll dice by using Irony Games' Dice server (http://www.irony.com/mailroll.html). You must enter your e-mail address, and you opponents. When rolled, the results will be shown to you on screen, sent to your inbox, and also sent to your opponents inbox. So no cheating, or it will be spotted.

Opponent interactions and input

There will be times when the rules require an opponents action in the middle of your turn (for example interceptions). You will have to stop, and ask them. To keep the game running you can always give your opponents warning for these (for example, "in your turn, my warrior will intercept any chargers against my hero").

The basic phases of a Mordheim Game

Movement

Movement is done by using this ruler (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/Jonik/ruler.gif).

Do not cut and move the characters. Draw around it, and copy it. The measure how far it is to go and place the new one at this point. Recheck the distance. If it is correct, use the pipette to get the same colour as the background then fill in the old character. This is to let your opponent know what you have moved (and it also makes it easier to spot cheating).

Shooting

Before shooting is started, make sure your opponent has been sent a copy of your movement phase. This is to stop alterations of where the models have been placed if the shooting goes badly/well. Declare who is going to shoot at who, and include this in the title of the dice roll. Everything else is as per the rules.

Combat

Combat is slightly different, since it would take a long time to deal with parrying etc if the opponent rolled for all of them. Instead, you roll for all of the dice rolls in your turn. So for example, you roll to hit with your skaven against a human. he has the chance to parry, so you roll for his parry. If he fails you then roll to wound. If the human has the option to fight back, you would then roll for his attacks as well.

After shooting and combat, you will send a second version of the map to your opponent, with details such as states of injuries added.

Deployment
Shadow weaver Vaire, Shadow walker Elwing, and Shadow warrior Lenaer, had been scouting the nearby manor when drums were heard. Not knowing where the enemy would come from, they surrounded the central building.

Turn one Skaven:
The tide of rats swarmed towards the unsuspecting elves surrounding the round building in the center of the small square, the Verminkin and Night Runners slinging rocks in the general direction of the elves but without doing any damage. Bun-Bun, the Assassin Adept, closed in on the nearby Shadow Walker, sending the two Black Skaven to accompany the Rat Ogre, its towering body lined up on collision course with the Shadow Weaver.

Turn 1 Elves:
With the skaven advancing from the west, Vaire and Lenaer retreated behind the building. They had no hope against the oncoming horde. However, possibly due to Elwing’s tactical genius, or maybe his inability to see when a fight can’t be won, Elwing charged the Skaven assassin. At the same time, Warriors Lanirn, Hadire and Lirenar appeared from the south firing volleys on the skaven, but wounding none. However they did draw their attention away from Vaire and Lenaer until more help could come. Shadow walker Syrion also appeared from the south, moving to aid Vaire and Lenaer in the fight at the centre of the battlefield.
Elwing swung his two swords at the assassin, striking him but failing to wound the rat. He in turn swiftly felled the elf, and continued to move across the field with the rest of his kin.

Turn two Skaven:
Bun-Bun, his thirst for blood renewed, leaped towards the closest Shadow Warrior, intending to slice the elf open. Unfortunately, his silent rage must have caused him to falter for a moment, and the elven warrior nimbly dodged the Assassins attacks and in return wounded him with a dagger. Behind him, the Rat Ogre called The Thing tried to keep up and the Verminkin in team Chop Chop Chop Poke picked up their slings and ran to a better position. In the meantime, the two Night Runners jumped off their secure roof, resulting in Whiskars landing on his head, knocking him out cold. The five Verminkin in team 1337 C0mm@and0 let loose with a hail of rocks and pebbles from their slings at the three Warriors below, again failing to injure anyone. Black Skaven Santa Claws darted through the center building, too far away to attempt a charge at the enemy Shadow Weaver but close enough to smell him. Rabid Merlinsk, the Eshin Sorcerer, mustered his powers and successfully casted Black Fury. He launched at two of the Warriors nearby, the charge resulting in a dead Warrior - and a dead Sorcerer.

Turn 2 Elves:
With Hadire being slain in the fight against the sorcerer, the two remaining warriors charged the verminkin. From the west Warriors Daiare and Illenair also charged into the verminkin, followed by Walker Maiar. Syrion charged the assassin that Lenaer was fighting, and Vaire charged into the black skaven that was following him.
After massed fighting, Syrion and Lenaer killed the assassin, and two verminkin lay stunned on the floor. However, Lanirn and Maiar also lay stunned.

Turn three Skaven:
With the Assassin Adept out cold, the rats found themselves without their leader. The Thing miraculously managed to gather enough sense to charge the Shadow Walker just in front of him - but not enough to actually hit with any if its attacks. Santa Claws, the Black Skaven, groaned and rolled over on his back, desperately trying to get back on his feet. The other Black Skaven, Nibbler, saw an opportunity to finish off a Shadow Warrior, and quickly took it, stabbing his Fighting Claws into the elf's heart. One of the 1337 Verminkin copied the stronger Skaven's example, finishing off another stunned elf.

Turn 3 Elves:
With Lirenar felled, it seemed bleak for the elves. However, with tremendous speed Shadow Master Vana ran into the battlefield, firing his longbow as he ran. With several more elves down, the fight at the bottom was getting harder, with more skaven close to joining their kin. With Syrion in combat with the rat ogre, Lenaer charged into combat with the black skaven, to aid the struggling Vaire. Only when there were more elves would they be able to fell the beast.
Daiare and Illenair killed the skaven in combat, and Lenaer and Vaire stunning the black skaven in combat with them. Syrion evaded the ogre with ease, and sliced his sword into the beast’s chest, wounding him. Angry at this, the ogre slammed his fists down onto the elf, crushing him.

Turn four Skaven:
Without their leader and with numbers growing thin, the Skaven didn't hesitate as the elven Shadow Master finally approached - they turned and ran with their tails between their legs, leaving their fallen behind.

Injuries:

Assasin: Full recovery
Sorcerer: Full recovery
Nightrunner: 2 deep wounds
