Do you have any suggestions for what would work with the color scheme? I played a little Warhammer Fantasy back when I was in high school but never strayed from the goblin green / flock bases. I'm quite a bit older now, and my hand is steadier, so I thought I'd try to make everything look as nice as possible haha.

Not green!

I agree with Khemri that the greys might be a bad idea. But I do like the idea of urban rubble on the bases. A second consideration would be a brown, like Devlan Mud or Khemri brown, with sand and bits of rubble, ala - Dark Angels basing. I always find that preferable to grass.

Hey Tragik, welcome to 40Konline and the Space Marine cult :)

Your models look awesome! I like the shoulder pads and the armor highlights. Good pictures too!

That's very recognizable  ;D when I see some of my old fantasy models I can't believe I did the bases like that!
Basing is actually very important for the look of your models. The level of your painting deserves some good basing. You're right about avoiding dark basing because you need some contrast with the grey. But if you wanna go for a city look that's a bit difficult. You could make it a very bright, clean, marble city with very light colored streets.
You could also consider doing a bit different themes of basing for each squad; but not too different to it's still coherent.

Good luck! Hope to see your future posts on your painting, fluff and army lists!

Figured I'd post a picture to show what the bases are looking like since I got so many nice suggestions.

Camera switched from a Canon to the Droid camera, so the quality isn't great, but I think the general idea is there, haha.

I'm working up the confidence to put some weathering effects on the Dread :P Anyways thanks again for the ideas and motivation!

Nice marines Tragik!

Do you have a small drill or know someone who does? The MultiMelta would look much better with the barrels drilled out.

Yeah, always drill-out your guns, from bolters to MMs.....you can never get either a perfectly round painted hole for the barrel or a deep enough dark.  Drilling them out helps with both!
You've made a lovely job of the high-lighting, very steady hand you have there my friend!!  If I might make one constructive criticism?  I don't think the bases match-up to the models.  They look a little bland somehow.....the colours a little washed-out maybe....I don't know what to suggest to rectify this, but it needs something to set-off your lovely painting.

Maybe rock and ice?  Desert yellow?  Artcore will have some ideas, he's good at that stuff!

:) Thanks Vulkan!

So now I should have some great ideas? 0)

The bases seem a bit too light imo. You could go the opposite way by going for really dark bases but I don't think you want that.

To stay close to your look but add more depth you could basecoat the sand with a darker color like Scorched Brown and drybrush your way up to the lighter color you have now. And I'd suggest to paint the vertical 'rim' of the bases in a darker tone. The Granite foundation paint is maybe nice for you too.

Hmm sounds good, I'll give it a shot with some new colors and maybe bigger rubble on one of the Marines I haven't based yet and do a comparison.

I don't have a drill, but will definitely get one. Do you suggest a manual drill or something motorized?

Manual, GW pinvice is a good purchase Tragik.  Use your scalpel blade to make a small centrally-placed pit in the barrel to be drilled.  This acts as a guide for getting the hole central.  Good luck.

Fantastic painting, minor posing issue. You should have probably gone for the gun down, the scanner up, and the head looking around. Right now he looks like he's forgotten he's on sentry duty and is reading something scrawled on the back of his rifle ;)

The painting, though, is superb. And the bases turned out well. Much better than the cringe worthy goblin green bases we all thought were cool about 10 years ago.

Here are some pics of my few remaining Dark angels. I couldn't keep the army together after the new Codex and Descent of Angels ruined them for me. oh well!

That's a pretty sweet-looking Belial! What did you use for the large icon on his back? I like the cherub flying behind him most of all.

Thanks !

Well for the yellow :

- White Basecoat
- Airbrushed Iyanden Darksun
- Dark Flesh Wash, taking off the excess before it dries
- DryBrush Iyanden Darksun to get all the yellow uniform,
- Dry Vallejo Pigments 73108 was applied in the "darker" spots
- Highlight 50% Iyanden Darksun / 50% white

VoilĂ  ! Hope it helps !
