OK, So I'm artistically challanged ;) But here's my efforts so far in starting my Corsair army, still waiting on my jetpacks.
Void Dreamer.

- Head from Dark Eldar Reavers.
- Torso from DE Witches
- Back from DE Kabalite warriors.
- Legs from Cutting up a Confrontation Minature.
- Arms from High Elves Mages kit.
The picture does not show it too well, but the blue on the head is a semi-transparent with a graded silver underneath.

Corsair Prince - Cloud Dancer
This was meant to be an action shot, using the power slide to power a thrust the sword in :)

- Eagle I think is from a High Elf Chariot kit.
The under side is magnatised so it can field the twin linked Shurikens or twin linked splinter rifles from the Venom kit.
Gems are using the a Red semi translucent paint that looks way better in real life.

translucent paints are from Tamiya's range X-22 -> x-28, keep some X-20A Thinners handy though as it does become rather thick over time.

Nice work Magenb! Glad to see you down here in the project logs! Off to a really nice start I like the bold vibrant colors . The Dreamer and the Prince are looking really nice. Love all the cool little bits you added too. Where'd you get the phoenix and book bits? So cool... I love stuff like that. I've got a couple of special bits like that just waiting for implementation.
Anyway great stuff man, keep it up and keep us posted. Great to have another Corsair player down here in the p-logs!

Phoenix is from the High Elf Chariot kit, I stumbled onto it in my left overs box :)
The book came from the High Elf Wizard box set, the Symbol you see is actually the one I made up for my CWE :)

Nice job. Love the use of the rebel colors. I see the corsairs as rebels myself, even bought blue dice with red pips for mine. Have even thought about painting a rebel flag on mine but this game is set way too far in the future for that imho. Keep them coming and the clean work.

Hey Magenb. Great stuff! So glad to see you have Hornets for your force. They are absolutley invaluable. Mine have been total game winners, breaking the back of my opponents force when they arrive from outflank.
The paint jobs are looking nice! The vibrant blue and gold looks really good. My only suggestion is to darken the "veins" or grooves between plates. I usually shade mine very dark and it makes everything else pop in contrast. Thats only an opinion though. If you like the gold veins I totally understand.
Full credit for going the distance with the partially golden hull! I didn't have the guts to do it on mine. I'm kind of crappy at doing that kind of thing and keeping it neat and clean but you did a great job.
Also I noticed you had problems with image size, I did yesterday as well! Glad you were able to fix it. Anyway keep up the great work man and give us MOAR!

Never though to darken the veins, did you mean as a darker gold or as a dark blue?
Full credit for going the distance with the partially golden hull! I didn't have the guts to do it on mine. I'm kind of crappy at doing that kind of thing and keeping it neat and clean but you did a great job.
Yeah, it was too blue without it, in which case, it needs a pin stripe or something, but I've never been able to paint white/light colours well. If you are trying with GW's metalics, then I found I had to water them down and do multiple thin coats or it would streak. Vallejo metalic paints seem a little better, but hard to find down here.

Yeah I was thinking a dark blue in the veins. Thats just the way I've always done my vehicles, a darker shade of the vehicles primary color in the veins always adds a bit more dimension to the vehicle IMO. Not necessary but like I said it always seems to make everything else pop.

I still love the colors and simplicity of your army colors. So rich and vibrant and I bet has a great battle field presence. Can't wait for a full army pic.

Great stuff man. Again I love the color blocking. Really ambitious stuff.
The Lynx is such a beast. People don't seem overly psyked about it since its not a LoW/Super-Heavy anymore but I think its a MUST have in a pure Corsair collection. I actually love its "flyer" mode which I consider its "get off the board" mode.
Anyway looking good man, your army is off to a hot start.

Well looks like my jetpacks have landed in the country, just waiting for the local postal service to do their thing, so should have some infantry soon.
The Lynx is a great looking model, most of the Eldar stuff is, much better than the blocky mon keigh mechs ;p
If you are looking to start with FW, I would recommend the Lynx as a great place to start, as there are a few more tricks you need to learn with working with their resin.

Good stuff, looking forward to seeing these bad boys (and girls!) on the tabletop!
The Lynx is especially nasty, can't wait to see it chow down on some Imperial Knights or something.
Love the Corsair Lynx with kinetic shrouds deep striking for the re-rollable invulnerable save, then next turn you can use its Flyer mode to zoom away and deep strike all over again, hah!

Ok after some test builds I think I've narrowed down how to kit bash this army, atleast in a way I can quickly tell the units apart :)
Reaver Band
Standard Corsair kit without the lasblasters merged with Guardians.
VoidStorm Band
DE wyches legs, Guardian Torso, corsair jetpacks, various heads, most likely with wyches pistols and close combat weapons.
Malevolent Band
DE witches with jetpacks, trying to see if I can get enough parts so they can carry two close combat weapons.I found that you can cut and file their backs down and putty up the middle hole, rather happy with how that turned out.
Balestrike Bane
DE Scourge legs, Corsair Jetpacks, Guardian Bodies and dark lances from whatever kit I can salvage.
I'll post up some test builds when I get a chance.

Nice stuff Magenb. Really dig the posing on them, very dynamic. Nice job on the Nightwing as well. One suggestion though, I think the bases could use a bit more love. Some little rocks maybe a little static grass would go a long way. Other than keep it up man, the army is coming together very quickly!

Basing is something I struggle with, my very small Necrons army did turn out OK with some sand and the green "crystals", but my Eldar basically have green grass flock. If anyone has some links to some nices basing options I'll see if I can give it a go.

A few years back I got taught a very simple but really effective way of basing my models which is what I mostly stick with. If you have a look at my Corsairs you can see it in action.
It's just Modelling sand, PVA glue, Green grass flock and then some brown and white paint! Doesn't take long at all and does really help the aesthetic of the models.

I really love working with cork for bases. I find you can get a really cool effect with them. My first tutorial I used with cork was on miniwargaming.com for lava bases. Don't have the link handy, but a Google search should pop it up. I may suggest trying to modify the circular edge from the corks to be less perfect. Try breaking pieces off with your hands to get a rougher, more realistic edge. I find it looks more natural the less exact you are. I've had my best success with cork board, as it's easiest to break and layer. Overall starting to look really snazzy. Can't wait to see the cork when their painted.

They are looking good buddy. I think the bases are really important and this looks good so far. I'm actually struggling with bases on my Dark Angels at the moment... but I got some easy tips on basing and supplies that'll last you forever... I'll post a little tutorial in my project log later today if you want to check it out.

cheers guys, been just googling tutorials for basing, but alot of what I'm seeing is for big model's or diorama's, I'm not a fan of putting too much extra height into the models that are meant to hit the table top.
I did check out your Basing Aurics, so I started mixing up some of the flocks I have.
Kind of kicking myself for not thinking of the flight sticks earlier though, The wyches legs make for some nice combo's. Thinking of trying to position one into some sort of flying kick.

OK my Lhamaean has come in and now that I'm holding it, my plans kind of fell into a heap.
The problem is I've see large arms on skeleton models, so the sword I was going to pop on her is waaaay too big. The daggers from the witche are roughly the same size sa her sword... Thinking I might just pop the jetpack on and drop the bone out of ther hair.
Anyone got any better ideas?

The one on the left is falling down to slam that wood elf spear into some one. Hard to see in the photo but the groove on the spear heads have the gold running through them. Very happy with how they turned out.

Thats great stuff Magenb! The Malevolents look great, its like everyone is a character but they pull together great as a unit. Too bad about the fuzzy tank! Man thats just the worst... when I moved to the south the humidity played so many games with me ruining countless models. I'm sure you could dunk that sucker in simple green and start again if you wanted. I've done that a number of times myself.
Anyway aside from the fuzzy primer ambush, everythings looking awesome. Keep it up man you've got a nice force developing here!

I would have prefered the Vampire Raider with the pulsars, would be easier to field in a game but I stumbled on that one for less than a crimson hunter. So the last pack of corsair jetpacks had to be put of for a while.
Painting it didn't take that long as I have a cheap ($20) airbrush which works really well for the base coating, terrible for any detail, since the veins are nice and deep as well, it didn't take very long. I still need to do the final colour coating of all the gems on the underside though.
As with all the forgeworld stuff I've had, things didn't line up as neatly as the GW kits, so lots of fiddling around. I wanted the top section to be removable to see inside, but it didn't quite work out :(

What a score! I've wanted one for so long but just never could. I also prefer the gun ship more but the transport capacity is nothing to be scoffed at. Can't wait for a bat rep with this bad boy.

Damn man... this army is HUGE! How long have you been playing? My army looks so freaking small compared to this!
It looks great buddy and what a nice selection of units you have available. My own army is about 6000pts but I have so much redundancy... like 3 units of Avengers, 3 Wave Serpents, 10 Reapers, 2x Wraithguard, 1x Wraithblade etc. Its really nice to see the sheer variety.
Anyway make sure you let us know how the game goes. I hope you crush em!

Ah a veteran after my own heart. That makes sense. I'm starting to get envious of the guys I play with. They've all been in the hobby for less than 3 years and everyone has 3-6 armies and they are all really expansive collections. One guy has only been playing for like a year and half has 6 fully painted armies (the Nurgle guy I played last week). I'm like what the hell? Lol

Nice job Magenb. The Splintercannon upgrade is so underrated. I really do hope DE Reavers can get a chance to get that in the next book. The firepower is ungodly.
BTW where did you get your magnets BTW?I want to remagnetize my hornets and I cant get the little magnets I want locally. Is there an online store your prefer?

I get them from back2baseix as they are atleast in the same country as me, so they get here a little quicker. Basically once you know the size and strength you can find them on ebay.
That size also works on their flights stands, but it is right on the limit of what they can hold.
This is what I did with my Hornets, it works OK, but I think it would work better if I counter sunk it a bit, and left it raised a little on the other side.

My local game store is an independant with 1/2 the store setup with gaming tables, but it has become rare to see 40k on them. The last tourney I just entered no one else rocked up.
My nearest GW store is tiny, just big enough to have demo games.
Seems the GW store isn't hard up on sales, so there must be some players floating around, just having a hard time finding them.

I see. I've been there its the similar in my area. The 40k scene is really tough around here. Its a major distance to get to the GW (which is thriving with tons of games going on) and the local scene is tough because there aren't a lot of players and its sort of divided at that.
That stinks Magenb, I know you've been cranking through the modeling and painting. Hope you can rustle up some games. Networking through Facebook has been huge for me, if it wasn't for that I'm not sure how I'd ever have met the group I play with, nor how I'd arrange games with my group as a whole.

Indeed. A good idea might be to ask your GW rep where you could get some regular games in. It took me about 2 years of intermitent searching to find a place to play on the regs, and it was right under my nose the whole time. EDIT: I was still painting my army at the time and not really, looking too, too hard cause I was waiting for the 6th ed dex and trying to finish my army.
Actually in the old WD, the store finder section was what got me rolling. I actually think they have a store finder search engine on their website.

The new Eldrad is stunning, and a bit fragile, becareful when cutting the wraithbone dangly bit.
The "runes" are actually from the Harlies decal sheet, there is a a run of them that just seem to fit nicely after being cut up.

Personally, I think that you've made a great attempt at the diamonds. There are plenty of painters out there that wouldn't have even tried to achieve , or can achieve, the results that you've produced. It's the reason that I have several Harlequin boxes unopened in my garage. FOTD. Fear of Tiny Diamonds.

Hey Magenb. Glad to see some new stuff. I think diamonds came out really good too. The lines look really straight and crisp. The paint jobs on the other models look nice as well. BTW I think the angle you photo'd Eldar at is probably the best I've seen. I wasn't really sold on the model till seeing yours. I thought there was something off in the pose... but now I can see it properly I really like it. The Venom looks nice too... looks like you have a cool transfer on the front too. Can't wait to get some more Harlie stuff as I love their transfers.
Anyway great stuff Mage, nice clean and consistent paint jobs all around. Make sure you keep us posted! :)

It will be interesting to see if they use the new Eldrad model as a replacemtn or if they'll just leave it as part of the box set, either way its a big improvement over the original.
The underside of the harlies jackets are alot easier to do the diamonds on than the limbs and I rather like the way it looks. I tried the blue/red diamond on one of the troops and yeah it wasn't pritty lol. Whoever did the Shadowseer on the gameworkshop web site is just epic, not only lots of tiny diamonds, but faded as well.
Nice spot Cav, the front transfer on the voidweaver is my craftworld symbol. All of my allies vehicles get links back to my CWE army.

Well, not alot is happening on the Eldar front, hopefully the LGS Month long comp in Feb will change that.

maybe I'm doing the glow differently.. I normally cover the are in a very light (almost white) metallic silver, covering a little large area, eg around the eyes, not just the eye. Then use a glaze/wash.
The problem I'm finding is the glaze/wash/ink settles too heavily in the rune, making it look like a solid colour.

Ah, ok.
So what I do is paint the whole region to look like the wood all over the model. So, for me, that's dryad bark, followed by a heavy bulb oil wash, then a Gorthor brown dry brush.
I then usually check the rune area and apply more wash to the recess, so that's it's really dark and gives a good contrast.
I then did fine line of Loren green outside of the rune. I leave the recess alone, so that it remains a super dark woody cookout. Then highlights of I think Straken green. I then go back and tidy up with a fine detail brush and dryad bark.
Fairly simple, the only bit where you really have to be careful is no getting any paint in the recesses as this will diminish the effect massively.

Ancient Treelord.
Another great kit for dry brushing and washes. I would take a look through the construction book first though, the kit has three different models so you could make some easy customisations.

Sick! Great job modelling up those tress. Having done them up before I know how much of a pain they are. The paint jobs look great as well. I'm getting Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past vibes all over the place. The green is just wicked vibrant. I love it!

Cool stuff Magenb! Those trees look great and the Treelord is awesome. Those greens really pop off the screen. I mean really pop...I had to turn down the brightness so they didn't burn holes in my retinas! But in a good way! It's rare you see colours that vibrant, and the models look that much better for it. Great work!

Yep, the Citadel Woods, so it is a single set of 3 tree's rather than the new Wyldwood which is 3 sets of 3, which I think would be too much real estate on the table, 2 so I'm aiming for 2 sets.
Yes, you get the bouns points :) Wouldn't mind doing another set but as a snapshot of the woods attacking.

Kind of leaning toward the shurikens being on either side of the mount point (far right) as I would have to turn them into the mount point I keep them together (far left).

Never thought of using Screamers as mounts for Exoduses. That's a really cool idea!
I think that the split catapults far right actually look way better than them being together, it just works really well.

Haha great idea! Never seen Screamers used as exodite mounts but it looks kickass :) Especially with the Hellion/Wild Rider mashup rider.

Well got some exodite wyches/banshee's on the way, used the sisters of the Thorns hair, head bodies with some wyches legs and Hellion glaves. Just trying to come up with a colour scheme for the army now.

I have since raised the arms up a bit and fixed the shoulder alignment. The angle is a bit off in the photo, it leans forward more and she's winding up to take a swing. The undercoat was still wet.

The head and torso is from the sisters of the Thorn set. FYI the hair is a separate piece if you are looking for it in a bits store and I removed the middle part of the crown.

grrr sorry for blurry photo but the colour scheme is not floating my boat.
The blue was meant to be a greyish blue, but just turned into regal blue, but I'm thinking that's not going to work to well either. I'm open to suggestions at this point.
Weird lean is because its not fix to the base yet. I'm thinking I'll have it jumping off someone helmet as a node to the real banshees :)

Man I hate it when a converted model doesn't go as well as I'd hoped in the paint department.
It's not all lost though. Do you have something like Fenrisian Grey? You could use the regal(ish) blue as a base colour, and then drybrush on the Fenrisian Grey in layers up to a grey-blue at the highest points.
Just start with an all-over (except for the recesses) really light drybrush and work up from there :)

Yeah the Fang... highlighted by Fenris Grey is probably what you are looking for. They have a whole range of greyish blues that are really nice to work with... and can be painted on over black. They even have a spray primer for it which I highly recommend.

Any thought to going with something to contrast against your Corsairs? Averland Sunset yellow or Zendri Dust tan or something? GW has sprays for all that... so you could do it quickly too. I've been rocking a can of Zendri Dust for like 2 years and its still rocking

I can only echo what Cav and Ynnead have said. The Space Wolf style Blue/Greys are tremendous (and easy) to work with. Working from The Fang, up through Russ Grey with a final Fenrisian Grey highlight provides a really good finish without a lot of fuss.
I hope you figure something out, as it's a cool mini that deserves a paint job that you are happy with. Good luck.

Yeah dry brushing helped, but still didn't hit the mark. Tried a heavier grey mix and it does look a bit better. I think the real problem is there is too much of the colour in a tight model. Alot of other mini's have a wide stance with long cloths to break it up a bit.
Took a look at Averland on the website and it looks like very dark, but definate yellow, found the hex code for it and it looks closer to the old graveyard earth, than a yellow, kind of like a dark wet sand.
Oh https://coolors.co (https://coolors.co) is handy site I stumbled on you can pick a ferw colours out and it tries to find matching colours.
I'm temped to turn those long horns into short ones curling back and making the face Kabuki mask.

Gotcha so you need something to break up the blue/grey slightly.
Have you tried painting (delicately) all of the little spikes on the undersuit in gold? I've found that's really helped my corsairs to look finished :)

Didn't have any Fenrisian grey, so tried mixing Astronpmican grey with the very old hideous blue (man those original white topped paint bottles are magic). They lose some of the blue colour in photos, but certainly more in the direction I was thinking. Might need to heavily water down the Hideouse blue and wash it on or maybe try dry brushing it.

Tinkering with the fluff.. for fluff reasons lol. I've always had the exodites as pulling in what works and finding a way to replicate the effect of something as they may not have the tech to do it. Combine some wyches moves with some dramatic tricks from the Harlies to replicate the effects of banshee masks, where they throw flashbang/sonic/smoke grenades instead of normal assault grens. So trying to find a way to make them look like they are moving through the smoke. So I'm thinking rakarth with a dry brush of kislev.
I think Kabuki masks are a go.

Silver would work really nicely with the blue as well, I just picked gold as you'd already used it on the knee armour :)
I like the idea of sonic grenades as fluff for the Banshee Mask rules :) I always like it when people put extra fluff effort into explaining counts-as units' rules :)

Looking really cool there magenb. Love the behind the back hold for that glaive. He looks ready to just flip it around to lop some poor marines head clean off. Adding some bronze and then just highlighting with gold can help, but you could easily just get a better effect adding Agrax Earthshade. You can keep adding layers if you want an even more dark contrast.

Looking great! The metallic really helps to break up the bulk of the blue, and the kabuki mask looks excellent too :)
If you'd feel happier shaving off some more of the head to get the face further back then go with your gut instinct on it :) always served me right, and in the rare times it doesn't you can easily space it forwards again with some of the material you've just shaved off :)

Found some cheap seeker mounts, I wanted to use the legs from the sisters of the thorn, but they dont fit very well.. I've never really had to try it, but does GW plastics bend like FW resin when soaked in hot water?
So if anyone else is thinking of using them, normal guardian legs fit OK, but its basically a straight leg. Reaver jet bike legs (with the bodies) so I would imagine windrider body+legs would fit OK as well, just didn't have one lose to check. Looks like more parts hunting while I finish the others off.

Hmmm, not sure about bending (although I do just straight bend my plastics on occasion and then pop a bit of glue over them to harden them up again). Never tried it with a bit of warmth but I'd expect it to help.
The other option would be to cut the leg off with a sharp knife, file or cut back one of the sides so it changes the angle and then glue it back in place.
Which is the bit that doesn't fit right?

The issue is the flowing chain mail, it bumps into the mount legs and saddle.
The legs fit together in the middle of the hip as a straight "|" join. If you break the glue on the bottom, so the top works like a hinge, you can expand it to fit reasonably well, but then it makes it a very weak join. Some putty/green stuff should fix that and if its not perfect it should be hidden by the saddle any way. Doing that changes the shape of the join between rider legs and body, giving it a slight "V" shape.
I'm thinking this is a better option than more straight legged riders, but I'm diving through bits still. All part of the fun of going off script :D
Tinkering with the smoke effect.. need to find some grey cotton I think, or a way of colouring the cotton with out destroying it's fluffness

Yeah those modifications to the Rider legs would work nicely. You can cut off the sides of the torsos to match the V of the legs too so that should work ok :)
I'm liking the smoke effects :) looks like they're leaping through mist. Alas I don't know of any sources of grey cotton wool. Perhaps craft shops?

That smoke effect is really good as it adds a real sense of motion to your model. I especially like the little bit that you have used on the end of the weapon.
As for grey cotton wool I am not sure that it is actually available. The only thing I could think of is if you were to soak your cotton wool in a water based paint that it might colour it and then when totally dry it might retain its fluffiness.

Great looking model Magenb. The armour is brilliant - a very good colour; very rich and finished well. I also would consider adding a thin white edge highlight on the sword, just to make it pop am little bit.

I could see the improvement in both painting and kitbashing from picture to picture. Really like the blue and gold. So had an Apoc game today, thankfully no one was a rules nazi, just more about having fun, with that in mind Eldar managed to get some Necron and Ork meat shields :). I thought I might have been able to do a batrep on it, but we had limited time per turn and I didn't have enough to roll everything off let alone record it all down.
I'll drop a link to the imgur Album rather than posting each image, once I've been able to upload every thing.
Silly amounts of points on the table, every with all the templates and heavy guns (sooo many big guns) and sooo many reserves couldn't really kill each other fast enough. Infantry really couldn't get up the board fast enough, or they were to fast and were just vaporised as nothing else was in range. I think I might actually field my vampire next time as soo many points just didn't reach anything.

OK little bit more work done on some test schemes.
Here is my test scheme for Exodite Fire Dragons, really rough paint job to get a feel for it. I'm thinking black for the face plate would be much of a difference, any recommendations?

Here is my Incubi/Scorpions, I'm thinking of adding the black and red weave onto the mask, so it aligns more with the Banshee style masks. But I'm not sure about the dark red, that scheme works for dark reapers but there isn't any tanned leather.

I think that you need to make the photos smaller, as at the moment they are huge, which makes it hard to appreciate the work that you've put in.

Nice! Looking good Mage. Love the mix of bits you've used, they really do mesh. The Scorpion/Incubi are my faves of the bunch, it has that cool sneaking type pose. Also the paint job on the Seeker is really nice! Great stuff man keep it up.

The Bleached Bone and white are a bit too much on the same model in those quantities. I tried a brown wash, but it came out too much like wood. That might be because I used bone with a layer of redish-brown ink on staves for a polished wooden look previously.

Yeah I hear you, I'm too used to painting clean Eldar and High Elves, so painting dirty is tripping me out a bit lol. The FD actually already has a layer of Nulin Oil on it.
I'm trying to decide if I should try Screaming Bell, Balthasar gold or even Warplock Bronze, wash of Nulin with a silver dry brush. The white cloak might look out of sorts, may have to find some old metal like spearmean to practise on.

I think all of the modelling and painting is coming along fantastically. I (like Cav) particularly like the Scorpion/Incubi. It kinda reminds me of minis that you would have found in one of GW's stand alone games like Warhammer Quest back in the day. Love it!

I think you're onto a winner with painting the chainmail in warplock, wash and then drybrush silver over the top. That's similar to what I've been doing with the golds on my Knight Worlders (except with Leadbelcher, wash, then gold) and it's a really subtle but nice effect. It'd work nicely for your chainmail. It would change the tone of the colour though, so I don't know how it'd work on your Fire Dragon (although I'm well aware that I like quite a muted palette so other people would probably not be as strict with that as I am!).

The lighter gold was too yellow, but a single layer of sycorax helped a lot. Need to figure out a better way to take photos.

BTW if you are looking for awesome super easy golds to work with, use Retributor Gold from GW. Stuff is amazing! Put a Reikland Flesh on it for instant weathering. Its what I use all the time.
I love Sycorax Bronze though. You can get a similar effect by highlighting Retributor with Liberator Gold and its way easier to work with.
However this looks really good. No real need to change, those paints are just easier to work with and look soooo similar. Just some advice. Anyway great stuff bud love it!

I really like this scheme. The silver was good too, just too clean as I said before. This one is not necessarily [¡]dirty[/i], but it is enough of a departure from a high elf paint job to be unique.

Hard to tell in the photo's, but the chain mail/silver plate has a blue glaze over it, whee are the beast scales are really light blue. Also the Armour pieces on them are bronze, then the trim is a yellow gold. I might need to darken the bronze a bit so its more obvious.

Those stripes forming an arrowhead look Micky Mouse, Magenb. A fine touch to a beautifully painted unit. Have always liked the blue and gold teaming together with your army. The Farseer in red at the point of the unit? Magic touch. Is that gold mixed with blue on their helmet faces?
These models weren't around in 5th though. I know this because I was so frustrated with GW releasing them at the tail end of 6th ed after scratch building my own. Imagine chopping and sculpting the lead torso of a Warlock to match the legs/arms of the old JB rider. Only for GW to pump out these gems... Pointy ears forever!!

Gold around the helmets with the new brown wash, the face plates are a dark silver with black metalic air paint on top brushed on so it works morel ike a glaze, then the eyes are a white with a blue transperant paint so it looks like a lense.
Yeah I converted up a bunch of DE jetbikes to make the warlocks on bikes, but then the new seers droped and the farseer just looked out of place, so I've been trying to find a cheap way to do them. The old DE conversions I can mostly swap back into reavers still. So someone is about to get hit by a reaver spam list lol.

Can't believe I haven't commented on your Dragon Riders yet dude! They looks seriously awesome :) I'm definitely of the opinion that Seekers make the best exodite dragons of the lot. THere's a sinuous grace to them that just screams 'eldar' to me ;)
Also, the combination of those mounted Dark Elf Warlock hair pieces and the occasional Harlequin mask is definitely an idea I'll be stealing if you don't mind ;) looks great

No, first time I tried it, I didn't want my typical warlock black face plate. I'm keeping an eye out for some more reapers any way may have to give it a go. I did see a photo of some DA's all in Sycorax Bronze, they looked great, so a full metal look can work.

Yeah it would be neat to give it a try :) if it doesn't work out i've recently had loads of success stripping models with Dettol. Was a bit nerve-wracking to begin with but it's actually dead simple :)

You say it's cheating but not once have I managed to get transfers to work right. It's a skill in of itself ;) looking great!
I think you're on the money with reducing the thickness of the central stripe a fraction. Rather than just making it thinner you could try running extra blue lines in slightly from the edge so you end up with a thicker central stripe flanked by two thinner white lines. Sort of like the stripes on the front of this beautiful piece of British engineering ;)

yeah I'll probably redo it at some stage and the gap between are a bit too thick. need more practise in getting those diamonds more consistent to match, but the holograph diamonds add a bit of disco flair lol.

Need some advice on the Eldar buildings. Does the GW undercoat work on the woods used for these? Or do I have to invest in some Dulux?

I don't know if they work on wood. I used rust-oleum primer as I had some handy, seemed to work, but its the first time I painted mdf. I've since read up on painting MDF and they recommend using something to seal it first, then use a primer... so I err messed up there lol.

Hey Magenb, are they made out of balsa wood? If so, you really want to stay away from really wet sealers or primers. It soaks it up to much and can warp. In the past I made warhammer ships with popsicle sticks and balsa wood. The best thing I found was automotive spray primer.when I used regular primer the wood would warp but with the auto one it seamed to dry faster and not absorb but you have to mist it,not a one pass thing. Mist it on, let it set for about 10 minutes then mist it again and repeat once more. It worked great for me. Hope this helps. Also might look into Kilz at a hardware store or comparative brand made for wood work.

The primer I used didn't swell or warp anything, I just don't think it sealed it correctly. I've read that you can use oil based primers to seal it too, so that might be what's happening with the auto-primer.

Automotive primers are usually cellulose-based if they're rattle cans so they should work well :)

So ended up getting a bunch of gift certificates for xmas and birthday, so ended up getting some Reapers and Swooping Hawks. I really don't like finecast, I think if I want any more reapers I'll try and track down some metal ones, shouldn't need any more hawks, but think I'd be looking to convert something instead. Any one see the daughters of khaine in white dwarf? They looks like they might be good candidates for exodite conversions :) now where did I put that lotto ticket...

Wowzers Mage! That model is terrific! The posing is just great; it's rare to see the psychic nature of the Eldar so well captured by a model's posing, but you've nailed it.
The paint scheme is really strong too, I especially like the blue armour and the golden elements too. Top job.

That is really impressive magenb and I really like how your clever posing of the model has given it a real sense of movement.
I also agree with Looshkin about the paint scheme. It might only be red, white and blue but somehow the way they work on this model makes them better than that.

Just awaiting for the group to finalise the rule set but we should be kicking off a soulstorm style campaign soon, so looking forward to dropping her on the table.

It's bark. I've used cork on my Corsairs and it looks good, but even if you layer cork its a bit too smooth when next to the Farseer rock pile. I found wood chips didn't give off a very good layer effect.

Actually never considered it, but sounds like a good idea. I've been messing around with fishing line, but the biggest issue is I can not find the right balance of rune size. I've tried pressure molding copies of various runes, like those from the DA guns, but they feel too big for me, since the runes are meant to fit in the pouch. Too small and the detail gets lost and its a floating blob lol.

That would look super sweet and there is room to slip the cables through the rocks and hide the LED. Given the size of the runes I've been tinkering with, that might look good on a wraithseer too.

Managed to squeeze in a few games too including taking DE wych cults and Necrons for a spin (all under 1k points games). I'm going to have to spend more time with DE, they are just super fragile.

Yeah I have a small Necron force, I'll have to take some snaps, painting is not that good as they are all pre-nulion oil lol. The combo of dropping units of from a night scythe and veil to basically teleport a unit was just insane. Deep striking Guardian bombs was bad enough, but that's got nothing on the necron combo, especially in lower point games. I don't think I'll run that combo any more, its too over the top for friendly games.
As frustrating as the old scatter and mishap table may have been, I think it is a fairer mechanic, chances are good you could pull it off, but you would run the risk of not being close enough or something going really wrong.
First DE match was a 3 way, Nids, Necron and DE. I took the extra attack instead of advance and charge for the cult obsession, big mistake, Necrons just smashed them and my wychs failed the deepstrike charge thanks to some shocking rolling and then proceeded to get eaten lol.
Second game they did better as I took red grief and was able to dish out some pain. It took a full unit of wyches 10 Hellions and both an Archon and Succubus to kill of a unit of wraiths though, was some very good rolling on the Necron side and they used the stratgem to bring a couple of them back. I also stuffed up and forgot the extra attack from the wyches blade.
Hellions did most of the damage against the wraiths, being able to fall out of that combat, shoot an immortal squad and then charge back in was insane, but meant the wraith focused on them. Wyches stopped the wraiths from escaping and since Necrons don't really have pistols, there wasn't much he could do about it.
The biggest problem for DE is the bad armour save, even a general sneeze in their direction sends them flying off the board, atleast with my rolling lol. I really think wych cults need a distraction unit, make them chase a Ravager or waste ammo on a Talos.

Loving the creativity you've put into your terrain, Magenb, not only really cool-looking, but very realistic :)! Is the terrain going to be limited to the table or are you going to try and apply some of that to your basing? Cool Eldar and Necrons, quite the contrast between those forces ;D. Especially loving that slick Avatar of Khaine in the background, I really love the Forge World model too, so extra points for that!

Right now I'm just testing the process for terrain, even meh pieces will be better than the mismatch of stuff I have now. It might work for basing, especially bigger things.
I have run into one, minor problem, if you are going to try this out, be a bit rought with it before undercoating, the fine edges on the base can break off easy, then give it a rough brush to find other bits that will come off. Once those are off it's been stable, but would have been good to have known before undercoating it lol.
Here is a quick snap with the first run of dry brushing done, so still washing and edge dry brushing, then some flocking. Its not a great shape, but it will block LOS to most infantry and the odd tank. Our group plays by the old LOS rules though.

Actually yes, to some degree. With the building kits release we changed to them but still used a lot of foam to help with the crumbled look. We made some trenches, had fun with them then the kits came out. Now with 8th ed release, we'very started making some more but I've moved more to making Hoth scenery for Legion.

OK, this is a rush job for testing a 5th ed game this weekend, so its not going to win any beauty pageants. Even with a have decent looking carry case, it is still faaaar cheaper than foam. So far it is working well, they need a decent nock to make them move.

So Metal infantry models, 10mm x 2mm is a bit overkill but works, this same size holds a war walker in place.
Plastics, Two 3mm x 2mm works, but can be a bit iffy on some things.

Thanks Cav, you should check out the box art for outpost Pythos IV, they used a different paint scheme from the website for all the deathworld stuff, including using the orange mushrooms :) They also used a purple for the "leaves", but with a red tip, it looks great.
If you can find a decent res pic for the outpost box, they did a light green on the trunks, but they shaded some areas with a light purple, it looks sooooo much better than the website pics. They also use a redish/brown in the damaged section of the ruins.
I went with the brown trunks as I had the paints, it would also match the woodlands and I saw how well it came out on yours ;)
Update on the transport case.
Sooooooooooo good, getting models in and out of the case is a snap, I know foam is not exact hard to get stuff in and out of, but stuff tends to get caught and if you are using it for storage, it's not the quickest way to find stuff. I think I'll get some cardboard or thin mdf and cut out holes for the bases. The Magnets do a good job but the mdf/cardboard should prevent any horizontal movement from a knock.

Loving those Aeldari ruins, Mage! I like your choice of color palette, and I actually like the crimson "flesh" beneath the wraithbone. It gives it a kind of alien look, but maybe your instinct is right, might be the wrong kind of alien look you're looking for. Maybe those new nighthaunt paints could help you create what you're looking for?

Well Magenb, I for one think that the terrain is brilliant. I love the colour choices.
As for the 'fleshy' tones of the Eldar runes...I think they're fantastic. I'm picturing the living Wraithbone from which it was constructed being hit by a virulent Nurgle weapon, or a Tyranid Bio weapon. The Wraithbone is then affected badly by the weapon, in the same way a body may discolour when affected by a poison...and the pink fleshy bits are where the damage was caused.
I think it works well and makes the rune tie in well with the plants.

Ooh purdy :) I too like the idea of a more bloody colour for healing wraithbone. I imagine something akin to blood vessels growing to repair damaged sections. Looks great :)

Nope, all NOS. I managed to find a super box set called outpost Pythos IV, It has the full deathworld set, the cargo containers set and a bastion. Found it on ebay going cheap in Europe and ebay had a site wide sale.
The webway gate was a planned purchase from the LGS.

On a side note, if you are looking for some cheap ready made terrain, I found this last night at the pet store, suuper cheap compared to the prices of stuff down here. Plastic, prepainted, LOS blocking, a bit narrow, but just works. Turns out, the fish section also sell rocks of various sizes that would totally work for other terrain pieces, so if you didn't want to scratch build, its looking like a solid option.

Looking good Mage. I dig the darker shade of the Wraithgate. The spirit stones look really good too. Also those rocks look awesome! Perfect for games. They must be pretty huge if they are bigger than the Eldritch Ruins. Nice find!

The Web-Way Gate looks really cool, Mage! Loving the contrast in the spirit stones, and the slightly aged look of the wraith bone! Looks beautiful together, though I would have gone with some other colors on the wraithguard-looking part of the statue. The minimalist color scheme looks great none-the-less ;D!

That gate is looking lovely. The bone finish is really nice and counteracts so well with the Spirit Stones...which are executed wonderfully.
Those rocks? Brilliant find Magenb. I often check the aquarium section of the local pet stores when I'm using them as free entertainment for my son, but I've never found anything that would fit 40k nearly as well as those bad boys!

It might sound crazy, but I'd try dark purple/violet for ground colour. Probably even with glossy finish (although this should definitely be tested first). At least I'd try this out on one base as an experiment. Personally I wouldn't do green leaves, the ones you have look 100% cool.

Yeah, I didn't want to deal with tiny diamond. If you get a chance too, check out the painting guide for the Harlequins, I don't think its worth paying for, but there are some good idea for poses in there, plus they do go for super close up shots and you get to see its not as tidy as it looks in the table photos :)
The dreaming shadow is another masque that doesn't use diamonds, but lots of cool idea's like the masks, a lot of them have patterns of red on white so they remind me of kabuki masks, not a fan of the colours, but nice idea's on how you might mix 3 colours on the models.
Well watching paint dry now... so time to experiment with how much foliage :)

I'd say that is a bit too much foilage... The legs of the model kind of disappear against it. Maybe it's just the photo though.

I'd agree with Seekingone. The base should accentuate the model and thus compliment it. In this case, it draws attention away from the Harlequin.
I'd say one or 2 small leaves should do the trick, in colours that are reflected in the model.

yeah I was trying to get a alien jungle feel, rather than a sparce open plain.
Here I tried swapping out some of the biger plants at the back withsome thinner ones. Still have not played with the soil cover at this point. I don't maybe less big plants again and more of thet hin stuff to get the effect?

While I agree with SeekingOne and Loosh, Mage on how the Harlie kind of blends into his base, I must say that that base on it's own is super vibrant and really cool looking ;D! I definitely like the idea you're shooting for, kind of gives me vibes from James Cameron's the Avatar movie. I also like how the earth on the base is kind of glowing from the luminescent fauna.
Also liking that Harlequin scheme a lot! When does White and Black ever not mesh together well ;)?

A more sparse base certainly lets your model shine a little more without losing that cool alien jungle effect. That second model with only the two leaves is a perfect amount. I liked the purple soil effect you achieved as well.

As a minor note, I'd consider painting the rims of the harlequin bases black. Maybe it's just me, but I always feel a base looks more natural when the colour of the rim is diferent from that of the ground texture on top of it.

Had to put the Harlies on hold for a bit while I do a mad rush to get some Deepkin ready for a game. The bow and arrow are meant to be a slight orange for more of a coral feel, but they keep coming out either too brown or too orange.

Great looking Reaver, Mage, I love that skintone :D! As for those choral bows you're trying to perfect, have you tried the citadel paint app, by chance? If you search by miniature and look for one of the Akhelian Riders with the war horn, I think you can follow the color guide for the conch horn he is using. I think that has the same color and tone you're looking to match your bows with :).

It took me a few goes to get the right amount loaded on the brush, a dab or two on the high straight point will fill most of it in, then you can almost drag it into the curve. If it over runs or you get some out of the groove, you can fix it up easily enough with a dry brush after it has dried

I did exactly the same thing with the Reaver bows. Fuegan Orange is really growing on me; it's way more versatile than I first gave it credit for.
Your Idoneth are really coming together nicely...I'm definitely looking forward too seeing what you can do with the Leviadon, it's such a cool kit!

Loving that base on the Reaver, Mage :)! I think your method for water on bases is more natural than mine, I'm still playing around with the idea of what's a good amount to put on there. How did you get that brighter blue color toward the shoreline without having to flatten your waves out?

Seal it with still water effects after you do the blending (Nihilakh Oxide works well with loaded brush and wet blendng). Two thin layers of still water effects seems to work, you get a good amount of controll without having to tape things up and it dries alot quicker.
Don't ask me why, but this seems to work out better with the gel going on top, just make sure the still effects is dry before using the gel, it doesn't mix well lol. Apply the gel using something Round, like a tooth pick, you can push the gel around and form wave shapes easier on its side and poke at it with the tip, but essencially you are leaving a thin layer of gel or making thin tiny clumps. These either shrink to nothing or dries to a thin transperant blue.
One final tip, don't go too dark on the blue paint going under the still effects, the gel makes it rather dark any way.

We have similar methods for doing the sea bases, but how we apply the gel is kind of swapped lol. I think I'm going to give your method a shot, cause I really like the luminosity you get in the results.

I use Vallejo Ultramarine Blue, Temple Guard Blue for the brighter waters, and then the Vallejo Atlantic blue water texture to create the waves.

I use Nihilakh Oxide for the shoreline, then something like teclis blue for the deeper waters. Vallejo game colour ultramarine blue is a little darker, not by much. I found that the sea needs the white layer first. Nihilakh is really useful as its basically a shade consistency. Makes blending alot easier. I'll see if I can do a base tonight and post up a snap.

So had a couple of games on the weekend with the deepkin.
I dropped the Namarti Corps battalion and merged the Thralls into a single 20 man unit. Totally worth it. The flying Turtle did very little damage output wise in both games, but the extra save was solid, and the combo of the turtle with lure light meant I could engage in a war of attrition against 30 chaos warriors lol. It's odd to have tanky elves :)
Some of the Endless spells are undercosted. Right now, if you don't field Wizards or don't have access to units that can atleast dispell, you're in for a bad day, even if you have access to those, you can still some up against casters you can't stop due to load of bonuses they get to cast, not fun to simplay have to take 2D3 MW a turn with nothing you can really do about it, it would certainly suck worse for armies that can't regain models. Mortal Wounds are still problematic, seems like it would be a fairer system if they moved it to auto-wounds.
It is strange 40k has removed the Turn 1 deep strike, because it caused a boat load of problems, but still allowed it to happen in AOS.
I don't think Namarti outside of Mor'phan are worth it, they just get torn to shreds otherwise.
The warscrolls for Bretonnian's seem to be woeful versus anything with a codex, not sure if this is for all the old armies.

Hi Mage, glad you got a couple of games in! Sounds like that Turtle did some really great support for you. I haven't played enough with the endless spells to really comment on them, but I have a feeling that two wizards would really come in handy for fending off those impending mortal wounds. One of the list I'm thinking on includes a Tidecaster and an Eidolon, Aspect of the Sea for some wizardly shenanigans!
About the Namarti, I've been thinking that I want to run one or two units of 30 Thralls to keep them in the fight. I'm still not sure about the Namarti Reavers, but I'll keep trying them out I think for the moment. I think the trouble comes from overly relying on the Namarti to tank / destroy most armies. I think instead of having the Namarti be the backbone, you have to use the Akhelians and the Namarti like two pieces of the same backbone. But that's just a hunch on my part ;D.
I only need one more unit of Thralls, and an Eidolon to reach 2000 points, then I can start reall testing my list and we can compare our experiences ;D.

Right now, if you don't field Wizards or don't have access to units that can atleast dispell, you're in for a bad day, even if you have access to those, you can still some up against casters you can't stop due to load of bonuses they get to cast, not fun to simplay have to take 2D3 MW a turn with nothing you can really do about it, it would certainly suck worse for armies that can't regain models. Mortal Wounds are still problematic, seems like it would be a fairer system if they moved it to auto-wounds.
It is strange 40k has removed the Turn 1 deep strike, because it caused a boat load of problems, but still allowed it to happen in AOS.
I don't think Namarti outside of Mor'phan are worth it, they just get torn to shreds otherwise.
The warscrolls for Bretonnian's seem to be woeful versus anything with a codex, not sure if this is for all the old armies.
I will say, that larger units are always better than multiple smaller ones. Just keep in mind, the bonus save for being in cover, doesn't apply to assault.
I think for the most part, the endless spells are pointed well, except for the geminids of ulgish, but they did faq it and the spell portals to limit their effectiveness. You do want wizards though. A good counter to endless spells is the lense of refraction artifact from the realm of light as well.
Turn 1 deepstrike was mostly an issue in 40k, due to shooting. In aos, if you plan for it, turn 1 deepstrike is not an issue, and a lot of factions are quick enough to charge across the table t1 anyway. Screening units are critical for success in aos to mitigate both of those things.
There is a bit of a power imbalance between battletome books, and those without. But, it's more due to a lack of battalions and allegence abilities, more so than the warscrolls/points. Some factions with limited options (like thunderscorn) do struggle, but quite a few "have not" factions can hold their own successfully.
However, compendium units and factions are purposely neglected. Games Workshop doesn't sell brettonia or tomb king models anymore, and don't want people trying to buy second hand models in an effort to chase the Meta. The pdf rules for legacy/compendium units are clearly only there for people holding out with their old models. Unfortunate for those who still have those models, but at least they can still use their toys.

Page 232 of the new rule book, says that the unit charging doesn't get cover saves. It would be very odd wording if cover saves were not allowed in close combat.
Hi Mage, glad you got a couple of games in! Sounds like that Turtle did some really great support for you. I haven't played enough with the endless spells to really comment on them, but I have a feeling that two wizards would really come in handy for fending off those impending mortal wounds. One of the list I'm thinking on includes a Tidecaster and an Eidolon, Aspect of the Sea for some wizardly shenanigans!
The problem I faced was an enemy caster getting +3 to casting rolls, kind of hard to deny that sort of stuff. My main opponent is going to be nighthaunts, so they have no shortage of being able to throw out deny rolls.
About the Namarti, I've been thinking that I want to run one or two units of 30 Thralls to keep them in the fight. I'm still not sure about the Namarti Reavers, but I'll keep trying them out I think for the moment. I think the trouble comes from overly relying on the Namarti to tank / destroy most armies. I think instead of having the Namarti be the backbone, you have to use the Akhelians and the Namarti like two pieces of the same backbone. But that's just a hunch on my part ;D.
Reavers are hit and miss, at full range they are very meh. I think I'll keep 1 unit of Reavers in the army once I build up a large enough force. One of the problems I found with a 20 man squad of Thralls, was I couldn't get all of them into the fight. With a unit of Reavers sitting behind, I can whittle down whatever the thralls are getting stuck into. A couple more models down can cause problem in the battleshock phase.
For me Akhelians and the king, will pair up to go hunting down leaders and juicy targets. This means I can use the Thralls with a soulrender to hold objectives or tarpit.
So I'm thinking my army might look something like:
1 of the kings
2 tide casters
1 soulrender
2 squads of 20 model thralls
1 squad of 10 reavers
2 squads of 3 model eels (not sure which just yet)
1 flying turtle.
This give me some points to tinker and spend on endless spells if I think I have a chance to get them out.

Holy crap! Those bases are insane Mage! Some of the best looking bases I've ever seen! Plus the paint jobs on the models themselves are outstanding! Just killer work man. Absolutely fantastic work, Mage :). I have to say, I think you've definitely reached a new level with your brush-work. I noticed that when you began work on your idoneth in earnest, each new unit seems even better than the last. I love this akhelian unit, the skin on the eels and the color-shift in the metal look great! The way you've pulled off the oceanic bases is the real icing on the cake 8)!

Great work Mage! Those Akhelians are looking superb. They aren't the easiest kit to paint and you've done a terrific job. The colour palette is brilliant and balanced and, agreeing with what Myen'Tal has said, your brush work seems to be improving with every iteration.
The things that really set these guys aside as a top notch product, in my mind, are the bases. The effect you've achieved is stunning. Super realistic and giving brilliant character to the models. Amazing.

Great unique pose you've managed with the Wraithlord, always amazed by the dymanic conversion potential that model kit has, I've seen all kinds of crazy conversions for him ;D. You must have great patience to paint all of those gems though ;), I've painted some on smaller infantry models and even with the gem paints, they're still a bit of a pain haha.
I have a question about the bases for you Deepkin. I've been referring to your guide on how to create the ocean bases, but I'm still a little stumped on the step that involves covering the base in the water effects. How thin is the coat that you recommend using. Also, is there a way you get a consistent and even spread across the base?
I find that getting a consistent layer of gel on the base is a lot harder than it looks. It just doesn't want to create a solid layer, and you can risk putting on too much gel if you're careful and gunking up the base. I think I almost did that on my Akhelian lol, and started taking some off the base before it completely dried.

Well the water effects layer I use is fairly thin. I tilt the base and/or use a tooth pick to move the water effects around a little, but its mostly self leveling any way. Its basically just sealing the paint and making a smooth surface for the gel waves. FYI, you can also cut up clear drinking straws to make some of the large waves.
Tamiya has a few paint colours that are tranlusent, the original idea for them was with model cars, so it was for break lights (on clear plastic). It was a super quick way of getting shinny gems done back in the day.

The water effects I use first is a liquid. Then a blue gel water effects to create the waves.

Yeah, moved the flamers to the head so it would look like the Autarch wearing Mandi-blasters :) I was thinking about some wings but I don't think they add anything to the charging pose.

To celebrate their 8th year, the store had a 40k apoc game, the owners are Ork fans so the green tide made a massive show of force across 4 tables :)
I haven't really done much more with them. I did go in a 2k point friendly tournament as the store was a bit hard up for numbers, so it was a thrown together list, which shouldn't have mattered in a friendly tourney. Against Storm Cast, it was a fairly even game and rather enjoyable, every other game it wasn't worth the time to put the models on the table. I watched a few other games being playing, I'm kind of disappointed as I thought AoS would be better balanced than 40k, but its just as bad.
Since the current gen of GW's games aren't that fun, we've been focusing on 5th ed 40k, it seems to need the least amount of mods to keep things balanced, we've even started to convert some of the newer units and armies back into the rule set. Just had a game on Sunday Admech vs Sister, close game but my admech lost, too many darn flamers lol.
Hobby wise, I've been trying to get my Admech up to table standard, nothing to write home about, as its alot of redcloaks and silver bodies at the moment lol. Some progress has been made on the new wraithlord, base coat, first layer of the gems, cloth bits are done and I've worked out where I'm going to put 3 of them lol.

Should have the last reinforcements on the way to complete my Deepkin and my stormwater at 2000 points! With some options that I can interchange should I need to.

Those guys look great! Color transition is spot on. Only thing I might add is maybe a bit of bright white at the bottom of them or a pale yellow, of coarse that's my hotrod flames. But beautiful none the less.

The daemons are nice. But hot damn, those Death Skulls are the nuts. They are simply amazing and you need to paint more of them right this minute. They’re stunning. The blues are so vibrant, the green skin tones are great, while the balance of colours is perfect. I’ve nothing but praise for those bad boys.

The Blue Horrors are nuts! They're also my favorite Tzeentch Daemon unit, so bonus points! Bloodletters look downright wicked and menacing, and that trukk is the epitome of prime loot! I kind of like it without the weathering, makes it seem hot from the scrap heap.

Cool Primaris Marines, did you only use the paints available with that kit? I actually think another color than black for the shoulder pads would have made them pop a bit more. I think you used silver for the pauldrons on the two normal marines, which I think looks good. But it doesn't matter much, they still look slick :).

Mage, I've got to say that you paint a lot of great models. From the Idoneth to the Eldar, your talent is very diverse. But, Mage, I think Orks are definitely your spirit army, in the painting sense. It's difficult to pick out criticism when I see these models.

Just so visually pleasant, those orks, as I've said before. I really like the red on the marine, use a brown wash to darken the crevasses and maybe a small white highlight or glint on fine edges and I think you'll have it. Keep them coming.

Had my first outing with the Ork hord. 5 players 1k points each, 4 Orks players and one Dark Angels player.
Badmooon Orks bought artillery, bikes and some deff koptas
Death Skull bought Lootas on foot, shooters in a trukk, nobz with Warboss in a Trukk, a couple of large squads of choppa boyz.
Evil Suns brought the mechs, Deff dread, kila kans, some lootas in a trukk, 2 warbosses (one in Mega armour) with a bunch of choppa boyz.
Goff, mass infantry with a weird boy, flashgitz and lots of grots around an artillery, with a warboss on bike.
Dark Angels brought the big guns, lascannon dreadnought, devastator squad with missile launchers, couple of tac squads, and a unit of terminators.
Scenario was 4 player, one on each board edge, and the goffs deploying in the middle holding the object in a building. Whoever held the relic at the end of Turn 5 wins the game. Each army was broken into 3 roughly even sizes, and each turn 1 of these chunks would come on for their armies deployment zone, with the goff re-enforcements coming on at a random edge, determined by the scatter dice.
oh, 5th Ed rules too :)
Was a lot of fun, the Weird boy teleported the flash gits behind the Dark Angels, as pay back for nuking his artillery, but scattered into the forest and they all died. My Lootas had a bad roll trying to whittle down a hord of evil sun choppa's heading my way, then got blasted by the Devastator squad, but still had some left over.
The Goff random deployment rolls meant my Lootas got rush from behind and slaughtered, my and his warboss ended up going toe to toe, they ended up nuking each other, which was awesome.
The Goffs other reserves ended up rushing the Dark Angels, so he got some pay back in there too :)
Mean while the rest of the Evil suns were running towards the Bad Moon, but those deff koptas had a good roll and dropped a good chunk of them. The squad eventually died out except for the nob and war boss in Mega armour, the nob made rush for the relic and got it (Goff had been killed off by Dark angels by that stage). While the lone megaboss went a number of rounds against the biker boyz, eventually it died, but too late for the bikers to do anything about the relic.
The Evil sun lootas shot up my Shoota boyz Trukk which promptly ram shackled into his nob holding the relic, so I got hold of it on turn 4, only to have his lootas and the DA terminators kill my shoota boyz off and run away with the relic.
Everyone had a blast as it was surprisingly even, random luck kept the laughs going especially with the war boss in Mega armour pulling all those save. Having the risk/reward system of 5th just works.

Picked up a Dark Imperium box set to help flesh out the mini's from the conquest mags, so I'm doing a variation on the blood ravens theme. Blood Ravens seem to make heavy use of psykers in their planning and on the battle field so, kind of aligns with my Eldar on fluffy level.Messing around with the bases at the moment.
Might sell the Death Guard, they dont float my boat and well I opened "that" cuboard and saw my build queue...

I was surprised at how well it came out, leadbetcher with multiple layers of vallejos transperant red, then used their metallic black airbrush version as a wash, seems to work well, just trying to find the right mix to use for highlights.
The librarian which drops next month will be interesting since it should be blue.
Stoked that I managed to get hold of Artel's version of Angelo though. Looks sooo much better than FW version, and sooo much cheaper.

OK so quick comparison
So 10 is Contrast Colour Talassar Blue $11.50, 13 is Vallejo Model color Transp, blue 70.938 @ $4.95. I didn't give 13 long enough to dry between coats. Both are on white, primer, with Model color steel.

Super quick job with Contrast, 1 layer of wash on the helmet and robes, but nothing over the rest. To fit in with the rest of the army, it needs a shade to darken it up.

It's a solid option to use, but since its transparent, it can be tricky to fix mistakes, as you kind of have to do an entire section again if you want it super consistent. I've yet to use the Model Color Blue transparent, but I didn't have that problem with Vallejo's red.
Light source is the yellowy orange, its a lot brighter in daylight.

You can always touch up mistakes with the undercoat you used, then reapply about two coats of the contrast over it. I find that works the best. Ulthuan grey is what I've been using so far. Working pretty well.

Update on the Blood ravens, the old space marines stuff has been going cheap on the used market down here, so I went a little nuts. Went even nuttier trying to get them table ready I time for their first outing, played them as blood angels in a 5th ed 2v2 3k a side game, BA+sister vs Orks… that's a lot of bloody Orks… we lost but, we made them pay dearly.. sooo many flamers lol.

As for the assist vehicle, I've been hoping the same thing for years, even built one years ago when we had build it yourself points system. Wish I had pics of it, I called it a dragons breath. I split 2 falcons apart and widened it and turned the back section around aiming forward and moved the pilot cockpit up where the turret was. Lots of putty work and sanding later, it was beautiful. Used the land raider assault ramp rules. Holy cow, that must have been in late 3rd ed or 4th ed. Once those rules were gone it became terrain and gone after that. Hmm? I have a couple of un-built falcons in the hobby room, hmm, maybe.

lol, batch painting sucks, but gets the job done, it was enough to look good on the table top, but most of them still need washes and highlights, and the basing to be painted and dry brushed. Kind of thankful for the knights as a distraction.
As for the assist vehicle....
That sounds awesome Dread, and alot of work lol, would have been terrifying to have Banshee's screaming out of it :)
So, edge highlights on infantry I get because the models are so small, but do you find the edge highlights on the knights a bit too much? The pictures in the imperial knights codex kind of look like there is a neon strip around every hatch lol (The picture is far worse than the one on the website https://www.games-workshop.com/en-AU/Knight-Paladin (https://www.games-workshop.com/en-AU/Knight-Paladin)). So do you guys go full on edging with big models, or do you go for a more subtle edging?

As far as edge high lighting, my view is that natural high lights on big models works better for me. Small models it helps intensify the look but big models it really seems like it over intensifies them. It's like your car or house, nature makes the high lights and shadows, we don't edge them. But this is just my ideas. I did a Dark Angels Bane Blade years ago and edged it, blah didn't like it so just went with the DA green, looked so much better.

I've found the same thing, and i actually have to resort to totally different techniques when painting Tanks versus panting Infantry because of that.

Thanks Nutty, the idea is solid as far as creating the hills go, the problem I ran into was the physical size and shape for the hills as I wanted to be able to put models on top of it in a tiered sort of manner. It's sort of OK if your army is still on 25mm bases, but if you start catering for 32mm it gets real big, real quick. I instead use it to create features for terrain, like this, which helps to give you more LOS blocking.

A nice tiered hill is a wargaming staple, but they always look a bit artificial. Just having a single tier big enough to put another terrain piece on can be helpful to; it breaks up LoS across the table.

basically dry brushing with Terminatus stone to fade down the colours.

Struggling to get the time to finish it, and I'm not sure what I want to do with the plasma glow, I don't think the typical blue glow would work too well.

Not as yet, the group is collecting the conquest magazines, with the idea to have a few games once we have enough kit.
The knights I wanted for apoc, but it hasn't taken off locally :(, but I'll still find a way to field them in 40k.

Mostly keeping these guys clean. I want to play around with some damage effects on the death guard side. I'm still trying to find the right basing plan for them, nothing's gripping me for them yet. I might keep the same cracked earth feel like the imperials, but maybe add the odd spot of pooled sludge instead of rocks.

well I've been considering rebasing my craftworld eldar, so here is a first crack at a base for the forgeworld Avatar of Khaine. I think they need some sort of texture though...
I might tinker around with all the symbols sitting on top of like a Copple stone or something, kind of like the silver tower bases.. hmmm...

Those are absolutely amazing. I do prefer the fully recessed image. I imagine those being painted up as stone or concrete with a magma glow coming up from the runes. That's a stellar concept mage.

The 2nd ed drawing of the dire Avenger has a walk way with ovals, but looked a little plain, not sure about the wood grain effect.

The designs look great; if you want to add some variation without to the stonework without adding woodgrain you could use some gloss/satin varnish to make certain parts look more polished than others.

The new generation Eldar models look like they are going to be around a broken maiden world feel, even the Dark Eldar might be headed that way. So I couldn't think of a good way to make the rubble fit into a living craftworld base style. Still interesting to have a tinker.
But I picked one of these up in the sales. Quick tip, don't use polyclay if you want a broken feel, it flexes and snaps rather than breaking. Apparently "earth" clay is better for that.. but I can now slowly progress the re-basing.

yeah, I'm all good, about an hours drive from any of the big fires, we just cop a lot of smoke/ash. My main stress is from trying to get my parents to come up and stay, they had a major fire front get within 10 miles to their North and have another one coming up from thee South, so far I've only been able to get them to stay over night a few times.
I have been busy getting the Tau force battle ready, got some people keen to take them on :)

It's a flat white undercoat.

The facial expression looks overly aggressive and angry for an Eldar Farseer, so I concur that the head is not quite right. Everything else looks very promising though.

The problem with the banshee heads is the hair, there is just too much of it, so it hits the super sized collor or what ever you call it lol but I did try it, great minds think alike :)

Yeah I think this but the bone in the hair keep throughing me a bit, I kind of want Lhamaean's head with the long braided hair, buts its all part of the model from memory and it has its own poped collar lol.

no, I use this cracking medium, the GW stuff doesn't stick very well so its terrible to dry brush. The big bottle cost about the same as the little GW bottle down here.

We don't get a lot of products down here, but there are heaps of other options for cracking paints and pastes in Europe and USA.

Ah that makes sense; it looks very natural but I've never seen cracks that large with the GW stuff. I usually apply it over a thin coat of dried PVA and that helps it stick; but I'll look into some similar kind of crackle medium for sure.
I had a lot of fun playing Tau during 5th edition; they were my first 40k army. The 5th edition rules really rewarded a playstyle that revolved around mobile firepower, which I found really enjoyable.

People buy the big boxsets just to sell all the units seperately, but a load cheaper even than from discount stores, so I've got some more pointy ears in my queue, but I don't have any planned games for them just yet. Once my group finishes the dungeon saga campagin my Tau will be hitting the table. I just needed to paint something other than white for a bit.

Sold off my Sylvaneth as they had been sitting on the shelf since I got them, so picked up some gear from another galaxy far, far away :) The game looks fairly simple to play, with not a lot of models on the board, so hopefully it will be a good way to introduce tabletop war games to my son.

I'm categorically not promising anything; but I know that I had an Issue 127...which I then misplaced. I replaced it. Everything I have is packed up for the sale of my house, but when I get a chance, I'll see if I can find the other copy. If I do, it's yours, no questions asked (it's a big if, as I have a lot of stuff and it's like finding a needle in a stack of needles, but still).
As for the painting...I love those Stormtroopers. I've been somewhat interested in getting into Legion, but the vast amount of already unpainted stuff I own is holding me back. Glad to see you've leapt in and are enjoying it.
The 2 armies are coming along very nicely, but the Stormtroopers are definitely my favourites so far.

So far, it has not been a cash grab, it's all been enriching the story, so massive thumbs up. The combat isn't terrible, just, somethings are less useful in a 3d real time combat system, so thing that explode on a timer can be easily dodged, etc. Will be interesting to see how long the wait between episodes will be, but if they keep this level of quality up it might actually knock Witcher 3 off my top spot :)
So more testing... I think it was a mistakke to go into the golden parts, might be better off sticking to the fins.. or maybe have the gold as the hex outline but I'm thinking that might be too much gold...hmmm...

I do like the second one better, coming from the gold, it's better on the eyes. But I do like the other too, just knowing all the time you're spending getting the hex`s in place to spray.

I agree with your first assessment in that I think you should keep the hex pattern out of the gold areas. I also think that a smaller hex would look better.

If you do go with the smaller hex then I agree with Dread and think that the hexes should cover a slightly larger area. I also think they would look better in the silver that you used previously.

I'll try the silver, I was thinking the gold outline would be more of a holo field effect where it blurs the shape. I'd love to try some of the colour shift paints, but no one has stock, seems shipments out of spain are problematic.
Had a chance to play around with some air dry clay to make the rubble for the bases. I think the airdry stuff might be a winner as it cracks rather than tears, if that make sense..

Yeah I would love to see you try this using a colour shift as I think that would really suit the effect you are after.
From above I like the way the small hexes give the look of a protective 'net' forming on the hull and I think it would look even better in silver.

So I tried the silver, but, where the silver met the gold it looked off. I blended some of the gold into the silver and it looks better than just a straight silver.

I pulled out a wraithblade that was a rush job just to get it on the table. Gave it some wash and edging, but it does not seem to show up on the camera very well. Was also an excuse to try out new bashing.

If you soak it in simple green a few days you'll be able to use an old tooth brush or a soft brush of some kind to scrub it off. I agree with Myen'Tal, the wraith looks good. If you'd like, you could use a blue wash to add some depth to the joints but not necessary, looks good as is.

Your bases are killer Mage! I love them. I think the Wraithguard base is my favourite, but the flyer base is creative and looks terrific. I like that you've hidden the flying stand completely, it makes the model look far more dynamic.

While I think about the rest of the black space for the drew-carry flier, I'm tinkering with some basing designs for my craftworld fliers. I'm thinking the pillars will end up tilted (which is why they have been squared out) and broken down a bit as they are too tall at the moment. The ground will be broken up and made less even.

The well/fountain broke when I tried to remove the steel support, the big stones slabs wasn't very Eldar like any way, so more tinkering on that one.

If you dab on a little Agrax Earthshade, that'll recolour the sand nicely. I used that technique a lot with my minis before I changed to some of the GW basing materials. You can always then dry brush the sand after for real depth of colour.

Since GW has put Eldar ruins as part of all the new mini's (Harlies, Banshee's, Incubi, Eldrad) bases, I'm trying to keep the theme going.
I'm tinkering with other bits to try and make a fountain instead of a well, just need to get hold of some more clay. Really liking the airdry clay too, its not a sticky as polyclay and since you don't have to bake it, I can apply it directly to other things.

That's a great idea, it should be minimal cleanup if any gets on the detailed ground.

All of those Banshees and their Phoenix Lord are looking great, Mage! I also love how you did the gold and red, it looks really regal. The only thing that I think could make them stand out more is painting the grilles on their helmet another color and picking out the eyes.

I love the wraith box sets, ah so many arms and so little money. I know what you mean about the middle one. I have my favorite one crossing the swords in front of him. It's like "BRING IT B****!" I really want more but I have like 30, 10 metal and the rest plastic.

Made a good dent in my backlog so far, even managed to get some paint on some of the Conquest Space Marines. Hopefully I can get those done before Indomitus drops, and my backlog blows out again lol. Lots of very nice looking models in that kits, hopefully GW doesn't go nuts on the Aussie price.

That Plagueburst Crawler looks sick Mage! All of the Death Guard range are fun to paint, but it's cool to see such a nice finish on such a big, centrepiece type model.
As for the fountain? I think cloudy water actually suits the theme and atmospherics of the model. It looks like it's been lifted out of The Witcher or something. Great work man.

So I haven't been pumping out alot of hobby work lately. While 9th ed is a big improvement over 8th ed, but it just not quiet the 40k gaming style that my group loves playing, seems to be a common theme around us grey haired folk lol. However given the crusade system looks great and sounds like GW is going to support it, and the primary and secondary objects looks like a really interesting mechanic, it too hard to pass up. So I've been working on some house rules to bring back some of the old flavor. Going to take the group through the initial rules tomorrow and see how more armies play out, if it works, we'll move into larger scale matches.

Even though I built it up the layers at about 2mm at a time as per the instructions, this water effects has gotten worse and shrunk creating a serious u curve.

I'm still alive, but I've been stuck doing home reno's. Took a couple of weeks off work and gotten most of it out of the way.
One thing I did learn though, is the tools from Asia have a smaller grip sizes than those made in Europe. Never really noticed it doing the odd jobs, but its a killer on your hands working with them on a decent sized job.
Looking forward to getting back to painting mini's again :)

Damn, that's some really crisp, neatly painted walkways. Does the upper part the models would stand on detach separately? Otherwise painting the cables and stuff underneath must be an absolute pain!

Sort of, the underside of the walk way is actually flat, so sadly the cables can not be seen from under the walk way itself. The trade off is that the walk way has hex holes, so you can attach pillars, ladders and connect different length walkways together without needing a load of pillars. That said, I'm a bit gun shy as to how much weight those joiners can hold if they were not glued in and there is also a piece that you can glue in place on top to reinforce the join.
The barricades on the side are detachable, but they will damage the paint if you take them off and on. You could work something up with magnets if you really wanted to.
I saw Tabletop titans do a board full of the walk ways and shipping containers (CWE vs Tau) ages back, on their youtube channel. I really liked the concept, kind of like an over sized zone of mortalis lol. Love the idea of having movement on multiple levels rather than just hiding in buildings. The 40k conquest mag issues 79 and 80 made it cheaper to kick off the project.

I'm going to be running Admech in the crusade campaign, I really like the idea of a RADsaturated forgeworld, so thought I'd try and give their bses a radsoaked feel, with the radioactive glow coming from under the dirt. might need to get a light box or something, photo's cam out a bit white washed.

Admech are one of the strongest armies. Thats the army i play against the most. Right now in crusade 25 PL games. My necrons are holding their own against them but barely.

The hydra...ive always loved this model and your scheme does it great justice. The bluesy colors give it a "dont mess with me" vibe. Well done.
I also agree on the Lorhern colors on the unit. My only suggestion would be using a flesh wash on the skin to help give depth but its no big deal since theyre so small.

So After trying to base my printed lizards I found it very difficult to do a traditional square base, which has to be in base to base contact.

HoloMiniatures makes the digital files. I'm not a huge fan of the Elven faces, I think its the eye look off to me, but every thing else about them, is soooo good :)

Oh yeah, the Lost Kingdom Lizardmen and Mercia ranges are awesome, I've browsed through them and half-drooled before, lol. Mercia is basically everything I dreamt of a revived/updated Bretonnia to be. Alas.
That's a very interesting range with the Highborn elves. The ring element is a neat concept. Probably very divisive, and obviously something you'd take off if you want to approximate GW's high elves, but I can certainly see them as a cool way to make them stand out from GW or other high elf concepts.

The kick started I back finally came in too, so I've been tinkering with wood elves. We haven't played games big enough to field this big boy, but couldn't help but to start dropping some paint on it :)

The dryads are super creepy too, thin mismatched limb sizes, really nice effect since they are meant to cause fear :)

Love the rangers and those High Elven archers, but your Maugan Ra takes my choice of favorite pick in this update :). I like how the bone came out, especially on the weapon's scythe!

Black and dark red is usually a very effective combination and this is no exception. The original Phoenix Lords were released around 1994/1995, so they're more than twenty years old ;).

Maugan'Ra is coming along excellently. You've got a nice colour palette and you're nailing the pain job. I really like the blade on the Maugetar and the bones are very realistic. Top job!

Wow, mega update Mage! The Tau look clean and great, as do the noble Elves. The new Eldar are looking brilliant; you have such a tight colour scheme which ties all the elements together superbly.

Those T'au Empire battle-suits look amazing - you managed to get the white so smooth, love how they turned out!
High Elves looking good, always love seeing some Dragon Princes, favorite High Elven unit right there.
Eldar are progressing well, smooth colors you've gotten on them.

sorry for the delay. Painting them is fine, there is a good amount of detail, but some areas like the faces remind me a bit of GW's early high elf stuff. How fragile... well it depends on what they are printed with, sadly in my area my options are basically affordable resin with a jump to I may as well just buy GW stuff lol. Europe and US get a lot more option on the affordable scale of resins.
Given elves have some very thin parts, like their long spears, these tend to catch and snap. slightly thick stuff like bows, may not survive a drop. That said, a lot of new gw sculpts these days will have the same problem (nighthaunts lol). Anything more solid like the horse, then its only slightly more fragile, I've had GW horse tails break from being dropped, etc.
If you can get hold of the right type of resin then it can be just as good if not better than GW stuff.

I really like the cloaks. There are some great textures and colours on show here.
