Welcome to the Summertime Blues Painting Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date. This one will run for June, July, August. (Note that this is three one-month challenges, not one three-month challenge.)

A squad, for the purpose of definition, would be anything that counted as a unit choice (e.g. HQ, Elite, Troop, etc.). This includes retinue for the independant char (e.g. familiars, bodyguards, etc.). I'd personally like to see multi-model squads -- the purpose of the challenge is to get a bunch of lead painted in a 3-month period -- but maybe you're planning on doing a kickass conversion/paint job for an army leader, nothing wrong with that.

RULES
1. Vows will be frozen 12 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 12. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.

3. The model doesn't have to be texture based -- but the base must be painted.

Painting Challenge FAQ

Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows. Since Warmachine doesn't use squads in the same way that 40K does, I suggest that it be at least a 3-man squad (Menoth Choir, etc.), or a warcaster + at least one warjack.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up :)

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

Q: I want to paint a squad of Howling Banshees and a single Ranger. Is the Ranger legal?
A: Yes. The "must count as a troop choice" rule establishes the minimum. Anything above that doesn't have to conform, it's just bonus.

Q: When is the closing date?
A: The month runs with the calendar month. Vows freeze on the 12th.

I'll be taking over for Loydb for this month, and I've made the vow making deadline the 12th since it started a couple of days late.

Anyway, I vow to complete my Warboss.

This sounds pretty cool! I never seen one of these competitions before. I like the idea of painting for honour!

I vow ten cadian rough riders!

Ive had them converted for ages, just never got round to painting them. Perfect!

Duty and honour!

Just as a heads up the top banner still says "Vows for June" might want to swap that to july.

Other than that, thanks for taking over for the month, and Ill be in again.

Vow:
9 Fire dragons, 2 exarchs

Its a small one this month, my gf's here and im out of town on the 15th until mid august, so Ill have to paint it up before then. Hoping to get them done for my tournament this weekend, fully painted isnt a requirement, but its the last 2 units in my list that arent painted!

I'll vow a termie chappy and his LRC for Angels of Vengeance Deathwing. I'll have to buy them first though.

ok i thought i allready did this but if i did then little deamons came and deleted my post.

since i made my vow for this month last month let me reiderate.

genestealers, however many of them i have.
just got a box of random 'nid stuff so there may be more than what i think i may have had before.

anyway ill let you all know sometime soon since im certain that you are all on the edge of your seat waiting in anticipation.

I need you to be a little more specific please, I can't just write down "A bunch of Genestealers and some random 'Nid stuff"
Title: Re: Summertime Blues Painting Challenge [month 2/3. 9 days to make vows]
Post by: 1-i on July 3, 2006, 12:26:16 PM
ok lets go with 12 unassembeled genestealers

really i think i may have near 30 lying around in several boxes. I have recently finished gathering my friends old army so im sure ill do more then 12, if i have more that is.

so 12 is the number of genestealers and the number of genestealers shall be 12.
Title: Re: Summertime Blues Painting Challenge [month 2/3. 8 days to make vows]
Post by: Targetawg on July 3, 2006, 10:46:48 PM
Changing my vow, sorry, I just realized Im not going to have as much time as I first expected due to my gf being here and not wanting to paint as much.

Dropping the fire dragons, Ill get them if i can, but I doubt it.

My new vow: a new heavy support, a very heavily converted and painted wraithlord.

My plan: Free hand a face onto him, or use the harlequin jetbike cover I have coming. I then plan on reposing him, moving his hands to graps a custom made cc weapon, and greenstuffing some details, it should be good.

Post by: Targetawg on July 4, 2006, 04:54:29 PM
Shortly (this evening or tomorrow) Ill put up some pictures of the conversion I've done to the wraithlord, before paint, this is my first major conversion of a metal mini, so It's a learning experience to say the least. My hat goes off to people who do complicated conversions on many of their models.

So far I've:
-Cut the back of his knee to bend it, he's going to be walking up some rocks
-Cut his foot to repose it
-Sculpted a face onto his head, the image below is what I'm trying to go for in the end.

Still to do:
-touch up the face
-straighten his arm
-drill out and green stuff flames from the flamer/possibly convert the shurikat to a second flamer for wysiwyg purposes.
-make the base.
-sculpt some dreadlocks onto him

-The model below is not mine, just one im using for an idea.

My vow will be for 1 zombie dragon. Hopefully when I get that together, I'm going to do a squad of skeleton warriors, but for now, my vow will just be the dragon, the old school one too, not the new one, I can't stand the intact wings and such, or the pose.

I ordered all the piece early and picked them up yesterday, I also bought a pin vice which is working nicely and have it half assembled.

2 Swooping Hawks
1 Vyper Jetbike

The wraithlord is finished. A CC weapon will be added to him once the bits arrive, but for now, he's done. And he looks completely, utterly, deranged. And I love it.

I'll get pics up tomorrow, but its 2:30 am and I've been painting for about 8 hours. He's sexy.

Rhino with FW BA doors done

Assault Squad 90% done

1 Assault Cannon Termie 50%

Tactical Squad 1    30%

Had to finish it quick,  I leave in one week for a month to do an internship up in Nova Scotia. He took me 15 hours or so to complete, this was my first decently major conversion.

grey knight marines around 40% done. i decided not to paint my grey knights in the traditional silver so have been doing them the same colours as DB_Reapers 'prodigal sons' space marine chapter (fluff to follow in the inquisitor section of the site) so theyre a dark red with a few gold, white and black bits. i just have to read the sticky to learn how to post my pictures. they should be on tomorrow.

Ebay and bartertown, I got a LRC assembled but unpainted with the forgeworld upgrades for my daemonhunters, along with 11 grey knights. All for 90 usd. Normally thats more like 175 dollars.

Check around is my suggestion for anyone buying models, even if you want new, unpainted, unassembled things you can usually find them, it just takes longer. Always a good option if money is an issue.

I finished last months vow, and this months, hurrah!

Now when I get back from my field work in august I'll have to do that one too.. hopefully.

Col Gavis that looks really hawt. But omg I hope that isn't just a rank and file guy that is going to be the template for your whole IG army...

I'd need a seriously big crack pipe to smoke while I did that lol

Nah, they'll be twenty of these in 1500pts backed up in the main by a fairly unexceptional Praetorian Infantry Platoon among other things.

Just in case you didn't know, you have to keep the photo on the photobucket website when posting them as this site relies on the photobucket site and doesn't actually download the pictures to the forum, it saves a lot of space that way.

Here's what I've got so far

Just need to do the bone and base then I'm all good

Parak your rough rider looks good!

I have been wanting to do some Cadian Rough Riders for sometime but just couldn't wrap my brain around Cadians using Horses. I was thinking of making mine on Bikes somehow. But I must say you did a good job on yours.

Unfortunately Valar it is too late. You'll have to wait until next month, when hopefuly Loydb will be taking back over, I hate running things that aren't rps.

OK, I'm officially failing on this one. Just obtained my mini today (damn model shop had it sitting on a shelf for a week). Not yet assembled or undercoated. I have however built and painted three pieces of terrain and assembled a LRC.

Oh wow, what a month. After signing up for the challenge I moved house and went away for a week. So on the 27th I sat down with my undercoated Hawks and got started, I finished 3 hawks. On the 28th I undercoated the Banshees, got started on them and finished the hawks. On the 29th I was out and yesterday, the 30th I finished the Banshees. Only had my mobile with me so the photo is poor, basing WILL occur this afternoon.

EDIT: The photo is also huge and playing up so I won't post it until I can edit it.

Hang on, I'm back in again. Raining all day today, so decided to teach my 5 year old son to paint minis. He got the best part of a squad done, I got the undercoat and base colours down on my termie chappie. If I can wash, highlight and base by midnight, I'll make it.

Edit: ink washes done. Three hours left.

Edit: most highlights done. Just edges of armour and basing. Just over an hour left. I'll photo when I'm done and post it tomorrow.

Edit: And done @ 11.45. Looking surprisingly good. Seems to help doing it all in one go. I tried taking pictures, couldn't get a decent one.

Photographic evidence, as promised. Need to redo the base as some of it fell off this morning. And yes, I should drill the gun barrels, but I don't have a pin vice.
