Title: Winter of Discontent Painting Challenge! [12 Winners! 12 Failed...]
Post by: loydb on January 18, 2006, 11:31:28 AM
Welcome to Month #3 of the Winter of Discontent Painting Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date. For month #3, the closing date is Sunday, February 19.

A squad, for the purpose of definition, would be anything that counted as a troop choice (e.g. HQ, Elite, Troop, etc.). This includes retinue for the independant char (e.g. familiars, bodyguards, etc.). I'd personally like to see multi-model squads -- the purpose of the challenge is to get a bunch of lead painted in a 3-month period -- but maybe you're planning on doing a kickass conversion/paint job for an army leader, nothing wrong with that.

Wow, we're back. Here's some progress pics. I've gotten the orange glaze down on all the dragons, and have put down a brass coat on 6 of the weapons. I've also basecoated and shaded the purple on the rangers. Instead of doing just 3, looks like I'm doing 6 of them, so 2 squads, yay.

Put down smoke onto the bronze base on the 6 dragons that I've gotten bronzed. Put down a green basecoat on my rangers camo bits.

The goal for tomorrow is to get the last of the bronze down on the weapons, plus work some on the ranger's camo.

Well I've finally finished the demouldlining and I'm ready to spray them :D. I've decided to convert one of them though to stand upright (straight legs aswell) with his gun/axe raised above his head!

Mold lines are living creatures to!! what did they ever do to deserve being mercilessly harvested for your pleasure >:(

Anyway, is it too late for me to still make a vow? If not then, i vow to get another 200-300 points of Menoth stuff done.

Abarai

What Pleasure ??? If it were upto me, they'd be honourary Viral-Strains for 2 reasons...

1) Like a virus they can ruin good things
2)You can never, ever get rid of them. it looks like they've been all filled away, 2 hours of painting later you apply an inkwash and      lo-behold, a mold line!

Anyway, great stuff there. I'm going to start my Menoth after the 'Crons, but I'm doing a reverse painting style. Red Armour with White Banding!

Thank you. I don't consider myself as a good painter or anything just average. Over here (holland at my place) there are ALOT of excellent painters thus its hard to keep up with them. I always keep critisizing myself and keep improving but it will take a long time before I claim myself to be a good painter.

I'll see if I can get a few pics up of my first FW. I've been away for a few days, and i've taken a while picking on a colour scheme, so i've only almost completed the prototype. I'm happy how it's turned out so far, however, and i'm learning new techniques and improving daily. Once I get the colour scheme and method down, i'll start the rest of the FW's ala factory style, leaving the commander last. I've also started on the devilfish, but only slightly.

They've been spryed!!! :D

Run Down of paint scheme I intend to do.

drybrush Chainmail, make gun black, make eyes green (your standard Necron painting)
*Inks will be undiluted

Paint 'Crons with Chainmail. Leave gun Black.
Apply a layer of Dark Green Ink over the platelike bits on the arms, legs and shoulders.*
Apply a layer of Blue Ink over the platelike bits on the arms, legs and shoulders.* (Might miss this out)
Pick out the Eyes, Gun Coils, Gaps in Chest and Chest Symbol Green.(not sure which specific colour)

The base will ruined cityscape. Basicly Drybrushed Codex Grey, add patches of Chestnut Ink.*

Edit: Almost forgot, do this 30 times  :P

Do you mean mine? It is just flock from a hobby store. The skull thing on a rock is from the ruin sprue. I never really found a use for it so I simply sticked it on the base.

ok, I finished basing and painting the complete 1500 Death Guard core army.

I converted posessed marines last weekend and I'll vow to have them painted and based (if I manage to find 5 more bases) before the 19th of februari.

Still ahven't figured out how I'm going to post pics but they'll look yummy when done

^^ you read wrong indeed.
I just finished painting 1500 points of Death Guard in one month.
As for this month I'll have too many projects going on so I'll stick with one unit of possessed marines I just converted.

I'll try and post them on CMON and expect somewhere between 7.5 and 8 for those once done so I have to give it a bit of an effort though.

The 2 units of Death Guard marines, 7 Plaguebearers, 7 bases of nurglings, 7 Terminators and 2 Dreads and one predator I did will probably be little over tabletop quality.

This army is intended to win some best painted army awards though. Still have to pick out some details left and right.

Vows updated.

I just put the smoke down on the last four dragons. I'm now down to the fiddly bits for the most part -- some red for some sashes, all the leather, gems, base highlighting. More pics later.

loyd

edit: Finished off the bases, unless I decide to hit them with Smoke. Still up in the air on that. Painted all the red gems with flat red. So. Many. Gems. Must. Cry.

edit2: The bases will still get a final edging of black, last thing before varnish.

Next is do a turquoise basecoat on the gems that I didn't do red, and highlight the red ones.

I transported him in the pocket of my coat. It's a really fluffy coat :D

Anyways, I painted the main colours first, then did some of teh weathering effects on teh armour but on that picture I still had to do the final coat of paint to smoothen up. Blending most of it.

Also not quite done with the base and such.
Backlight is really bad light for taking pictures but I was testing my new digicam and backlight is one of the most tricky light conditions so it's a good test for teh camera, bad picture.

1st squad of 10 finished.  :) Will post my wip's later, once I've got the hang of this camera.  ;)

Well, apart from tidying the bases. WIll probably do that when I've got the full quota done.

Slight close up, they're tabletop standard, you'll probably see thick paint here and there, a few mould lines maybe. Just too damn many to get them perfect.  :P I think they work really well "en masse" though.

Here's all my minis I gotta get done, although the guys in red aren't part of the vow. They need repainting (after I decided to change colour scheme, then change back ::)) but that's for another time. Oh, and the buildings and tanks wip aswell. Gotta get motoring.  :o

Hey CC, very nice. Not a colour scheme I could ever see working in my head but apparently I was wrong.

Would you be so kind as to go through your process and colour use, particularly on the clothing? Is that enchanted blue and white?
Title: Re: Winter of Discontent Painting Challenge! [Month 3! 24 ppl in so far]
Post by: custard on February 3, 2006, 11:22:46 AM
Thanks. Been around this forum for a couple of years now, nice to finally get some pics up.  :)

My last army was Eldar, green bodies with yellow helmets. I played around with a few colour schemes for a while, more natural earth tones etc., but much prefered this one. (Plus I couldn't face more green. ;D) Someone's mentioned it's a bit anime police style, but that wasn't an "inspiration". I just fancied blue in there somewhere, and black trim just looked too plain and boring. Although I still kick myself for choosing white.  ;D 4 coats on troopers.  :-\ I did change to red at one stage with mainly black armour, but they just didn't look as striking, even though they were far quicker/easier to paint.

I use Vallejo, so much better than GW paints, but will put in the GW equivalents. Oh, and I'm very much in the "if you cant see it or get a brush in there, don't paint it camp"

I think the pictures are slightly bright, I'm still working on lighting, hopefully by the end of the month I can get my whole army up here with some decent (true colour)pics. I've realised that the blues look lighter than they actually are. :(

Off a black undercoat. I like to leave the undercoat showing to define the areas. I think it needs it with this colour scheme, otherwise there wouldn't be as much definition.
Cloth - Imperial Blue (Regal Blue) basecoat and shade, layer on Magic Blue (Enchanted Blue) main colour. Highlight with Electric Blue (Ice Blue)
Armour - Cold Grey (Fortress Grey), first coat of white, just to get a base on, not too thick and many brush strokes evident at this point.  :-[ Generally 3 more coats of very thinned down Skull White. Could really use more but as they are rank and file, and for gaming, I leave it at this.
Flesh varies opn how much I can be bothered to do.  :P Some are just Bronze Fleshtone (Bronzed Flesh) with a Flesh Wash (all my inks are GW), then some get highlighted with wither Elf Skintone (Elf Flesh) or Bronze Fleshtone again.
Guns are Cold Grey (Fortress Grey) leaving the black as shading, then highlighted with Wolf Grey (Spacewolf Grey)

Tbh, I'm not too sure how the tanks are gonna turn out in that colour scheme. :-\ Will have to wait and see I suppose.

Btw, is this a regular monthly thing? I saw in one that it was a 3 month period?  Probably wont vow as much if there's a next time.  :D It's proved a good motivator.  ;)

I fly out of state on Sunday, so I need to bust ass if I'm going to make it.

I'm nearly done with my Fire Dragons. I've got to make a neatening pass with yellow, paint some of the gems on the Exarch, smoke the bases and paint the base edges black. I may do a little outlining, I haven't decided yet.

There is a lot of orange that is getting washed out to yellow by the flash, and I don't have time to color correct atm.

On my Rangers, I've gotten the leather pretty much done, and will start working on the boots & cloaks tomorrow (just basecoated now).

*Sigh*

The challenge isnt really happening for me. I tend to work on a larger scale (eg 100 guardsmen at a time - gets all the stages done at the same time, and the same painting techniques so none look out of place) and never get things done unless I absolutely HAVE to...

So I don't have a finished falcon, but I have a 60% finished falcon, a 60% finished serpent, a 40% serpent, a 40% falcon, and a 30% vyper....

Hmm, well while I didn't complete my vow (10 hardened veterans and chimera) there was a very good reason for this - I've had a devil of a time getting hold of the shotguns I need for the vets and the predator turret for the chimera. As such, I've had to do something else instead.

I am however fairly pleased with what I got done in the month 2 challenge. I was experimenting without a flash so I'm afraid the photos suffer from camera shake a bit.

For what it's worth I also based these stormtroopers and finished a converted rough rider, although I've temporarily misplaced the photos.

Ah, now I see (thanks to custardcrusader). Braveheart then.

Likewise; finished with both month 3 (two squads of kroot) and month two (a bit of make-up work there).  I have already started on next month's kroot hounds.  This has definitely helped me try to finish this army.  (Only a couple more months til Games Day...)

Dean, I really like those wraiths. Good job with the greys.

WTG on finishing all 3 months. I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't (damn that month #2!).

We'll just say that Tuesday is the cutoff date for coming back and posting, given all the forum problems over the month. I'll lock it down Tuesday night with updated totals, then start a fresh new minty thread for Spring.

Got photos of the last two models I completed last month; the chimera (minus turret) and the rough rider.

The chimera has had a minor reworking. I really like the way GW designed the heavy bolters on the land raide,r, with the armoured cowling. I wanted to replicate this for my IG vehicles, I think the weapon now looks like it has a wider field of fire and can shoot up and down as well. The heavy bolter is from the IG heavy weapon squad set, and the cowling is built from plasticard. I lowered the hull of the chimera and rebuilt it with more plasticard to enable the turret (when it gets added) to shoot over it.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi6.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy230%2FFold%2FChimera.jpg&hash=7743d987d7f435c16bd2cceb96e45164e0e9245d)

The rough rider is an extensive conversion using a plastic catachan and a horse from an old GW/MB game, Battlemasters.  Green stuff was used (like all my IG) for the furs and for the saddle. I used the arm with a grenade for the lance arm, and parts from the Ogre Kingdoms set for the actual lance.

@ Dean, the banshee is an exquisite bit of painting, well done.

@ Serious Callers Only - The models are not inspired by braveheart actually (not explicitly anyway). What actually happened was I once saw a BBC program about Cro Magnon Man invading Europe and wiping out Neanderthal Man. I thought the visualisation of Cro Magnon Man was really cool so these are more or less direct copies.

Either way, they look great. I saw the Neanderthal thing too - I see the influence now. Is this going to be a whole army themed like that?

Yeah, well it pretty much already is a whole army, albeit relatively small. I have maybe 50 guys made up like it, with around 80 more plastic and metal catachans sitting around waiting to don their furs. It's a slow process but worth it, I think.
