Title: Summer Painting Challenge [Month 2/3]
Post by: Kitsune Tsuki on June 29, 2007, 12:10:47 PM
Welcome to the July Painting Challenge. We are now into the 2nd year of these, first under Loydb, Khemri Demon, Serious Callers Only and now me. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.

I will update this post with a list of people who wish to vow.

RULES

1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.  Vows are still accepted after the 10th, but they can not be changed afterward.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.  It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however.

3. I need to know unit sizes when you post your vows.

FAQ
Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows, myself included.  Feel free to do vows based on any game system.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?

A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

I've got a Griffon Heavy Mortar (Testing schemes for my Macharius) and a Defender Heavy Warjack to finish my 350 list.
And probably that Journeyman from last month if I don't get off my ass and finish her in a day and a half.

I'm being conservative this time around.

8 Termagants
8 Hormagaunts
4 Genestealers

And that's it. That's 20 models in 31 days. As a bonus, they are already assembled and ready for primer.

Now I have to get to work.  :P

After along while away fro many painting I'll start real easy.

One single mini, High Elf mage converted for RPG.

I know it's trivial but that mini sat unopened for 4 months.

lol don't type in the quote fields, cause I looked at that and went wtf? he just quoted me and that's it.

yeah I am going to do a test squad of IG this month, also a test Carnifex. probably going to be doing a lot of stripping this month lol.

I did a guard army last summers vows which used a WW2 german Flakton (sp?) pattern, but many models were old metal cadians and like 10 year old Leman Russ's so i sold them over christmas and used the money to buy all new IG. so 100 or so Guardsman to build and like 9 vehicles....    so gotta pick my colors!

Well, I guess there's a first time for everything...

For 40K I'll do:
Forge World Basilisk & Hellhound (when they're delivered)
Steel Legion squad

and for Babylon 5 ACTA I'll paint:
3 Omega-class Destroyers
1 White Star (when it's delivered)
strip and re-paint a fourth Omega and two Hyperions

Everything I already have is primed only (besides the ones I'm re-painting).

Is pledging a Predator tank that is totally and completely unassembled and still in the box good enough for my first time?

I'm looking to have it put together, painted and all around finished by the end of these vow things ....

This will also be the first time i've done a vehicle (dreadnaught aside) ...

I'm vowing a unit of kroot carnivores, shaper, four kroot hounds, and a krootox.

I am 70% done with my first IG squad, and I must say they are sexy. should have them finished by the time I go to bed tonight.

maybe I should vow more because these are rather pretty easy. Can't remember the lastime I was able to take 14 models and finish painting them in 2 sittings. (of course my sittings are 3-6 hours! each) I know on average my sisters took 3-4 sittings to finish a 10 girl squad, god that last squad made me think of cutting my fingers off so I wouldn't have to paint anymore!

Ares; how many models are in the kroot squad?

Vows are not updated yet, mainly because I've been damn lazy.  I'll probably do them when I lock them on the tenth.

I'm vowing to actually complete painting a model. One worthy of viewing on this forum. Hopefully i'll get a mutated csm done, that i have been 'putting off' in fear of ruining it the second my noob paintbrush skills are unleashed upon it. Fingers crossed

Update:
the Farseer is done and i must say it is easily my best paint job to date, this guy is an awesome model and i just couldnt stop picking faults with the painting, so it took two days.  any way this was my first attempt at extensive freehand and also at creating a suitably good power weapon effect, will post pics tonight

the Dire avengers are making me cry, they need all to be painted and made by this time next sunday and i just dont see it happening  :-\

Autarch is at 20-30% done with mainly base colours put on

Rangers are 40% done  each so still alot more work to do for them

I am going to vow the following:

20 Skeleton Warriors w/ Command
1 Broodlord
1 Bone Giant
1 Liche Preist
1 Liche Preist mounted
1 Tomb Prince
3 Charioteers
1 Lictor
1 Wirlwind
4 Tomb Swarms
20 Night Goblins w/ Command
1 Night Gobling Shaman
1 Night Gobling Big Boss w/ Squig
1 Tyrant Gaurd
1 C'Tan Deciever

That seems like a big list but since it is the summer i have more time (when I am not at work like I am now) and hopefully tommarow will be a productive day and I should get some done. I will post what ever I get done tommarow night.

I'm posting more WIP pics as long as I still have the camera on loan.

Here's a synopsis: The base red is on every figure. Gaunts need details and final highlights. I'm not going to use an ink wash like I did on the first figures, it jsut adds and extra step and really doesn't add anything.

Drybrushing is working like a charm with these guys. I usually avoid it, but these are swarmy Nids I'm painting, and I actually want to complete a vow for once.

The one in the lower right hand corner is completely done, except for dull cote.

I want to add a single Deathwatch marine to my vow.

My Banshees are going much more quickly than I had expected. Starting with a layer of Foundation Astronomicon Gray allows me to build up light gray and bone colors much more quickly than was the case with the Banshees I painted a few months back. I finished 3 girls last week, and the remaining two regular banshees need maybe another hour to hour and a half each before they will be ready for basing. Sorry, no pics yet.

i gave the new foundation paints a testdrive over the holiday, wow do i love them so. the coverage and smoothness rock, i'm just getting the hang of how much watering down they need but i have much of my chimera painted. im hoping to have the rest of it painted and starting on highlights soon.

i got side tracked with things around the house (read this as gf distractions) and i forgot to order from FW the turret and gunner i need for my chimera ( i was mostly hoping the new DKoK command models would be up for advanced order so i could make one order but ithink 2 would be best).

the tyranid is still in the same % of progress it has been in for a few months, just needs carapce work and some final details and assembly, id like to have this done if anything this month.

finished greenstuffing the vindicator (FW casting is never perfect) and i think its ready for primer and painting. hopefully more progress this weekend!

I would like to pledge 3 Guardian Jetbikes (1 Kinsman, 1 Shuricannon Kinsman and 1 Kindred Leader) and a Warlock mounted on a Jetbike. Warlock just needs GS finishing and then I will tag them all prime and undercoat black and then start - probably this weekend.

i swear the whole world is aginast me painting these dire avengers, first i lose one of them into the abyss of my room, it fell on the floor and is no where to be seen, and then i put down bleached bone and no matter where i look i cant find it, i cant cope with this any more :'(

solution: CLEAN YOUR ROOM. lol

my g/f has the same problem, the room where she keeps all of her make-up and clothes looks like a clothing store and a cosmetic store combined and then exploded. she can have something in her hand one min, put it down and not be able to find it 5 min later.

i keep all of my 40k in shelves and i have it in organized boxes. my modeling/painting area gets cleaned up from time to time and old or wip projects get moved to the side and new ones get the prime space.

im trying to limit my projects that i work on a tthe same time and it seems to be easier and less cluttered, plus i just moved so everything is clean and organized. :)

yeh i think my sanity packed its bags and went lol and my workspace definatly doest help, i might treat you to a picture of the insanity later.

update: no luck in finding the 10th guy so ive built another.  the exarch is done and armed with 2 shuri cats.  the other 9 are in varying stages of completion all without arms or guns some with heads. should be easily completable tomorrow and a little into wednesday

much to my dismay the first  battle of the campaign which is to be fought on sunday was raised from 1500 to 2000 points oh the joyous look on my face when i found out i had to add another 6 rangers, 10 guardians 5 striking scorps and 6 swooping hawks to make up that number.  fortunatly the army doesnt have to be fully painted which is a blessing although the scorps have had a very quick paintjob and the hawks i think i can borrow from a friend.   :'(

yep... my sanity was stolen today, stolen by GW and a dam indecisive gaming club >:(

Vows Updated.  I really shouldn't put them off for so long.

I changed my vow slightly.  I dropped Vilmon for a single Guardian and a angel of death/spectre figure I've had for ages.  I figure I might as well turn it into a DnD model.  As far as progress, I did the metals on one warmonger, and I finished the rhino except for the storm bolter, side doors and what ever else is going in the other hole.

This guy is out of his mind obviously. I want pics if you finish all of this.

Gaunts are done save for the details, like teeth, eyes. Hormagaunts are getting the bubonic brown base on the remaining 4 talon sets. Genestealers are last.

I've even started assembling the rest of my Nid stuff, this vow is going so well. 8 more gaunts, 8 hormagaunts, and 4 more stealers, a warrior, a tyrant...busy busy.

soooo

Land Speeder - Done!

4, 10 man IG Squads

2 Junior Command Squads (5 guys in each squad)

so in essence I am doing 2 min Platoons of IG and  a speeder

Well, my internet hasn't died, so a quick update.
I should have my doggies finished by the end of today and I have (mostly) put together my dire avengers, so there should be some progress on that in the near future.

With any luck I'll be able to post up some picture soon.

Those rocket troughs look great Col. Gravis.  Your work is always really interesting.

Edit: Well, I finished the doggies earlier than I thought, so here they are:

my vow was progressing steadily untill yesterday when i attempted to primer my FW vindicator. i dont know what they use to make their resin casts come off but for the life of me i cant get the oily residue off. i have already soaked and scrubbed them with a toothbrush in pinsol and i primered them with rustolium (sp) auto primer and i can still scrape it off with my fingernail with a small amount of pressure. this really annoys me as i just bought even more FW DKoK and if i cant get the damned primer to stick ill be pissed even more.

Love the rocket troughs Gravis. 8)

Anyway, a little update from me.  I've done the three Omegas and the White Star for B5:

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi14.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa321%2Feek_107%2F40k%2520Online%2Fomegas.jpg&hash=27bf86dcaf69702fd9e91693a330e6b4ed4938f1)
(the White Star photo was even worse, I need more practice at photographing these ships)

And also my Hellhound:

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi14.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa321%2Feek_107%2F40k%2520Online%2Fhellhound01.jpg&hash=dcc284c5dd6170bf510e1d206f7ade627e1ea733)

Now I just need to do the Basilisk (which still hasn't arrived[/i] and finish my Steel Legion squads.  Not sure if I'll manage this, because my brother just got a Necron Battleforce and has taken up my ENTIRE workspace.  I can't get a good production line of guardsmen going until he finishes assembly. :(

Update. No pics this time, holding out until finished.

Termagaunts are all but done. Just have to drybrush 2 bases, which I'm going to do RIGHT NOW. Then a little green on the "guns."

4 Hormagaunts complete.

Left to do: 4xGenestealers (lighter blue, bone details, eyes and tongues) and 4 X Hormagaunts with the same thing.

I am going to finish my vow! ;D I'm timing the final pics for my 500th post.

magus, good clean paintjob, only criticism is:

the edges of the hair could be a lighter color

there isnt really a contrast that makes the minis 'pop', maybe wash them so the cracks in the armour are more visible?
(personal preference)

cheers :)

I agree.. good stuff, but maybe take a figure you wont need with the same amount of detail and ink it with a slightly watered  down blue, it could really bring out the coolcolor scheme you got going.

the edges of the hair could be a lighter color

The tips of their hair are painted a lighter pink, which gives a pretty cool effect if you look at them from behind or above. You can't really see it if you look at them straight from the front, which is what I shot. Better lighting and/or camera work would also help. Anyway, edging the hair would lessen the effect I was going for.

Thanks for the comments.

it looks like this month will be another failure, i havent completed any painting (vowed or on my own) for a few months. i think next month ill just vow my armored fist squad (squad, chimera & HW) and then see what else i can get done as a bonus. the biggest problem this month other than only getting to paint in teeny spurts or only a few hours on the weekend was all the resin problems (primer not sticking even after 2 scrubbings) plus i was waiting on some DKoK parts to finish my chimera (which are cleaned, trimmed and primed and waiting for greenstuff to dry). id really like to play at the LGS which im going to visit this weekend so i might abandon all painting and paint up my necrons fast so i can get a game in  ;D

well, apart from a half hearted test of my new foundation paints back at the start of the month, I have painted nothing in weeks. However, I'm now on holiday, my eldest son is at his grandparents for a few days, and I only made a small vow, so I'll see if I can regain my muse.

I'm not going to manage my Vow, finding a house, buying it and finding and getting a new job, the new Harry Potter book *ducks* was just the final nail in the coffin.
Jetbikes are all assembled, riders are all converted including the Warlock with magnetised Witchblade and Singing Spear.
All of them are primed and undercoated black and I have started the base coats, but there is soooo much to do, I have had no painting time  :'(
Everyone else seems to be doing brilliantly.   :o Keep it up!

@ Valar & Myung

Black Undercoat => Scorched Brown Base Coat => Dark Flesh (leaving recesses) => Dark Flesh/Skull White (about 3:1) extreme highlight => Dark Flesh/Skull White (about 6:1) highlight (between Dark Flesh & extreme highlight) => Scorched Brown Wash => Touchups

The reins etc are Beastial Brown with Snakebite Leather highlights.
The horse hair, Chaos Black with increasing highlights or Beastial Brown with increasing highlights and a Scorched Brown wash. The hooves are a mix of Chaos Black and Scroched Brown about 4:1.

well, I didn't manage my razorbacks, and I'm away for a week now, so I'll bail out for this month. I really don't like doing vehicles.

I did, however, assemble a tac squad (finally replacing my old beakies as the scale doesn't match with my devs or assault), so I'll vow them for august.

Damn. I wanted to post pics but haven't got the camera yet. One of these days I'm going to buy my own digital camera I swear.

Update:

Hormagaunts x 8: Done
Termagants x 8: Done
Genestealers:  Need a final Hawk Turq Highlight and based, and I'm good as gold.

I'm going to finish! 2 more days.... ;D

I also have completed my vow, one single solitary figure. Feel kind of bad really, so I am aiming to increase it next month.

Maybe 5 figures ;D

*sigh* I fail...you'd think that having no classes and no job would be conducive to good painting time, but alas, life caught up to me.

And video games.

I got my doggies done and got most of the way through my Dire Avengers, they still have gems and stuff a bunch of scorpion green to go on (tabards, their helmet plumes, etc).  If I put in some time today I could probably finish them.

Unfortunately I only got 6 of my scorpions primed even, so I think I'll do that as next month's vow.

I probably missed someone, pipe up if I skipped over you.

I missed barely, didn't paint one arm of my last warmonger, and the guns on the rhino.

Finished.

Will this thread still be open to post pics? I have to borrow a camera every time I want to post some pics, so It's a little  inconvenient.

I failed dismally. 2 models base coated witrh all colours, 2 more almost base coated with one colour, the other 4 still just primered...

In my defence I received 4 rhinos and some forgeworld stuff in the post so got distracted making things for my Arbites. :D
