Eldar Scorpion versus Cobra (Forgeworld)
« on: August 13, 2003, 11:23:53 AM »
I am looking to pick up an interesting looking vehicle from Forgeworld as a project vehicle for me.

I decided to look at the Cobra and the Scorpion, but can really only justify one this month... so...

Not having read the Imperial Armour books to look at the stats behind the vehicles, which one sounds like the better vehicle to run:

The Scorpion: The Scorpion super heavy grav tank is one of the largest vehicles capable of anti-gravatic movement. The Eldar have used the Scorpion to spearhead an all out attack, especially against strongly defended positions where its Pulsars are used to engage enemy bunkers and strong points.

or

The Cobra: Whilst the Cobra is a potent weapon in its own right, its primary role is as a war engine hunter. Its distort cannon is capable of destroying a super heavy tank or small Imperial Titan with a single shot.

I am making the big assumption that A) they are playable in games and B) they count as a Heavy unit.

My goal is basically to switch it in every now and then as my one unit allowed under SH.

Thanks folks for giving me some input. =)

They do not count as a heavy option but as allies.

They are playable in 40k as long as you have the opponents permission.

If you play using one or other it depends on what you want them to do as to which to get.  For instance the scorpion has D3 small blast templates where as the cobra gets one ordnance template.

But if its looks you are going for which do you like the look of more the cobra with its canon in the middle or the scorpion with its twin linked pulsars and brightlance?

This is a questionable assumption.  These units are only fit in big games... like 2-3000 points.  If you are play GT armies or smaller, 1850 or smaller, then your time and money is better spent elsewhere

This assumption is dead wrong.  Super Heavies and Heavy Support are not interchangable, these are totally different selections (actually, totally different Force Organization Charts IIRC).  You really should pick up the rule book (even if you just read the entries in the store) and get an idea of the rules for Super Heavies before you spend the money.

If this is just a modeling project, then it shouldn't matter what the rules are.  Build the model because you like it, and enjoy it as "shelf decore".  However, if you are really wanting a game piece, you should look at the rules and discuss this with your gaming group... they may have something to say about a Super Heavy on the table  ;)

Two things,

1. If you want to use a Super-heavy tank in a game under 2000 points you need the opponents permission.

2. The Scorpion has been Eratta'd, the Twin linked pulsars no longer have the blast, and are basically BLs with Str 9, and has a pulse laser rather than a BL.

Thanks folks for the input.

I really am not a player of the game.  Basically, the shop I used to play at, which had good players, changed owners who turned it into an Internet cafe (for all intents and purposes) and the store I tried out basically contained the largest collections of cheese based armies you can imagine.

So... I mostly just collect now.  But, I like to collect and put together fieldable armies, so I do try my best to stay within the rules and such. :)

Not sure which one I will pick or if I will just hold off for a month and buy both next month and then start battling myself to figure out which to start putting together first.

I like the Cobra more, it's 'neater', because it doen't have bits sticking out, just one weapon, which does it's job, so you could say it's more 'Eldar', but that's another arguement.

Also, I think it's more useful than the Scorpion, as a 'guess' weapon which uses the large blast, and can move and fire, while the Scorpion has to see it's target, it get's it shots, but you get almost the same by fielding three Fire Prisms, but they cost less points.  I'd say model-wise, they're nice, but probably not that worth it for points.

I have been planning to get one for a while, it would be really cool to play with one.

If you were only to get one I would say get the Cobra first, on the simple fact that it does D3 Structure points when it hits.

If you are taking this in a battle, most likely there is going to be something equally as big in your opponents army. This will probably have some structure points and this is where having the Cobra would come in better than having the Scorpion.

i like them both the only problem i have is with the cobra because with one gun it would be easy to disable it, but all in all they both are good i my self have  a cobra but i have never used it.

*cough* Void Dragon Phoenix *cough*

Get a bomber.  WAY cheaper and they are actually playable in smaller games.  Some places, like the Canadian GTs actually allow them in tournament play!

I'd get the VDP first too, but between the two super heavies...  "GOT COBRA?"  Bielmurra's point about the opponent having a heavy too is dead on.  Kill the opponent's super heavy and then move on to ordancing troops.

Hello,
Well, I would say get the Cobra.  It wins on all fronts:

1)  It looks cooler and more menacing!
2)  It retains more Eldar "feel": powerful, graceful, and fast, but very specialized (hence easily misused).
3)  No Eldar army should be without a D-Cannon, and this tank sports the most powerful Distort projection system available!  Show the Mon-Keigh what true destruction is about!

There are some other points that could be made (such as the fact that this distort weapon bypasses certain Titan class shield systems), but enough...
Has anyone actually seen one fielded?   Please answer back in my thread on superheavy grav tanks!

hmm I would go with the Cobra, man that 10/1 ord is more deadly than a pulsar any day...geez I should see if my friends will let me proxy one in a 3k point game,..

Sorry to hijack you post Velenn, but I have a quick question on the Cobra/Scorpion: The Gravtank lower half...Is it the same as a falcon?  becaus then It'd be pretty easy to build up a turret out of dowling/putty for a falcon, then proxy.

And as to answer the question...Cobra, much cooler in looks, fluff, and stats.  If you go for the bomber (more advisable), I like the Nightwing, or Void Dragon Phoniex (acctually, theres a painting tutorial on the VDP if you want to check out the model more in depth).

On the other hand, Have you thought about a Night Spinner?  They look cool, are playable as Heavy support (w/o the opponents permission), are pretty effective vs weaker armies (orks'n'nids), and are far cheaper than the above choices.

Hey! I know!  Let's focus on building army lists, instead of silly custom titles and command structures, yeah?
