@ Fugitive: The tank in the top left is my Guilliman Pattern Devil Dog. I have some closer pics of it here, it's still very much work in progress.

It follows the same principle as the Hell Hound and Manticore, using Marine technology, the idea being that Guard and Marine equipment would be interchangeable within the Macragge forces.

@ Those: we definitely have to meet up, especially as you are pretty close by, and it's been absolutely aaages!! :)

I do have some more pics.

These are the bodyguards for my Command Squad, made using Valkyrie door gunners and other spare bits.

And talking of Valkyries, I have done a bit of work on Straken's Vendetta:

And some very early shots of Straken's Chimera:

And some shots of the vets in the command squad as I have done a tiny bit of work to those:

That's it for now, although I hope to have some more stuff done over the weekend so should have some pics then.

cheers for looking.

i do have to say, these are wonderful! I enjoy how you incorporated a lot of "counts as" models into the list. Its nice to see how you've taken a lot of the normal unit types and made them into something that really adds a lot of character and personality to the army. The tank conversions are freakin' amazing! That vendetta looks absolutely beautiful. I really really like how even your coats are on your vehicles. Is that hand-painted or did you use an airbrush for the base-coats?

I sympathize with the white issue. For my Dire avengers i'm still trying to come up with a good white solution! it takes forever and i haven't gotten it to look nearly as good as yours!

Its a pity that all the etched brass plates are either Imperial or Chaos. Though this whole list is tempting me to get crackin' on my own guard army. I have some Tanith floating around and a whole lotta tanks!

Any more infantry you're gonna be adding to this army?

Chris, once again it ALL looks absolutely fantastic! I've never seen faces painted like that!

Nice use of the FW Ultra symbols also. Did you just wash them or paint them fully?

Thanks for sharing :)

Hi Guys,

Cheers for the positive coments, I am still slowly working through this army, but unfortunately don't have that many new photos to show you.

This week I have mostly been paintin' the underside of my Vendetta white......

And it's taking aaaages..... :(

Anyway, I should answer some of the comments.

@ Outcast Valkyrie: All of my vehicles are hand painted using a combination of very thin layers of drybrushing followed by line highlighting. This gives a semi airbrush finish without me having to do loads of masking off. It also allows me a bit more control, although to be honest I do have an airbrush and do intend to start practising with it soon.

This method is normally pretty quick, I can do several vehicles in a couple of hours, however it really hasn't worked on the Vendetta this time around. This is mostly because it needed to be painted in several sub assemblies which meant that the shading was a bit off, but that's easily corrected.

The biggest problem has been hand painting the underside, which to be honest wasn't one of my better ideas but it is looking good now it's almost done. However next time this will most definitely be done with an airbrush.

In terms of more infantry the plan is to add 2 squads of veterans, one of which will definitely have 3 melta guns, I am not sure on the loadout for the second squad. The plan originally was for plasma guns, but playtesting has ruled this out unless I give them carapace, but this is just too expensive.

The first squad is supposed to be coming back from behind enemy lines. They have performed some sort of special operation and are limping home scathed but triumphant!

I am not entirely happy with them so far, I am not happy that the melta hangs over the base, but short of removing the piping there isn't much I could do. Might rethink this particualr mini.

But here are some photos of the work so far (I have only done the sarge and 2 special weapons). These are not yet totally finished. A bit of greenstuffing and then extra equipment will follow.

The sergeant is meant to be consulting his map, whilst his squad mates take time to rest and strip their weapons. I am not sure about the pose on the sarge's map hand/head, might redo that, and as I say the melta gun overhangs the base which I am not too happy about.

I am also undecided on their transport. Originally I had wanted to have them in Valkyries, more for cool value than anything else, but the Vendetta has taken up so much time that I am now thinking of just having them in Chimeras. Plus playtesting has also shown that the Valkyrie's lack of fire points makes a Chimera a better prospect for special weapon toting Vets.

@Artcore: Cheers, I have to admit that painting faces is my favourite bit, but I am gutted as GW have withdrawn some of my favourite colours from their flesh range, meaning that I am going to have to come up with a new colour recipe soon. I might try C'Oat D'arms paints firts and see how similar the colours are.

And how are your Ultras coming along?

The brass etch is painted over. I must admit I did think about just giving it a wash, but this doesn't really work as the washes won't sit on the metal. I think it maybe has some sort of mold release agent that repels the paint, and they are a bit too fragile to wash as they scratch easily. Once undercoated they paint up fine though.

@ Those: Cheers mate, I will pm you this week about meeting up, just need to sort my post Christmas finances out first! :)

As always cheers for looking.

Hehe! I like!

I personally like the pose for the sergeant myself, looks like he's telling his men to continue onwards, even if they're weary from combat. I will agree with you about the overhanging melta... Maybe finding a way to bend his elbow or hold the gun against his body more? Admittedly I like the look of the injured guardsmen letting the weapon hang there for a bit.

As for the fire points, I thought that the newest iteration of the rules allowed you to only fire the lasguns on the chimera? I only read that part briefly, so I could be wrong!

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one airbrushing! some people say its cheating! As for the paints, I use the Reaper Master series stuff which has plenty of skin tones to choose from! you might be able to find something there... er wait, you're across the pond, aren't you? Reaper is kinda... American-based...

Don't mind me and my stupidity!

Well guys, I didn't realise I hadn't updated my plog for quite so long! :)

Admittedly that's probably because my "hobby slacking" has been worse than ever, I was doing really well but then lost all motivation to paint.

I do have some pics to show though, although not much, but thought I would prove I was still alive!

So some progress on the Vendetta. The majority of the highlighting on the hull is done and I have started on the decals. This is the first time I have used proper decal products and varnishes and I have to say it is worth it and makes a hell of a difference. Of course I probably should have dusted it before taking the photos, and apologies for the crappy pics too, time for a new camera me thinks.....

And the reason this bloomin' thing has taken so long, the hand painted over a black undercoat white underside!

I won't ever make that mistake again, it took about a month to get this bit painted, it has about 7 or 8 stupidly thin layers to get it white, but it's still not 100% smooth, but will do for this one. Next one I paint will get airbrushed though!

And I have also done a tiny bit more work on the Vet Squad. I got rid of the melta gun as I didn't like the way it overhung the base, so he now has a lasgun. I did make up a couple of melta gunners to replace him though, still got to drill out the barrels on these guys.

And I also made up another Vet, this one stopping for a cigarette, which I have yet to green stuff (and his arm's held on with blue tac for now).

Anyway, sorry it's such a tiny update, I have benn neglecting the painting side of things a bit recently but hope to resolve that.

As always cheers for looking.

Hello StraightSilver...

good to see you posting again..! It has been a while..! Another excellent update...

I got an Imperial Guard Cadian battleforce for my birthday..! I also treated myself to a Valkyrie, which I am very much looking forward to building and painting. Unfortunately that will be yet another project to start. (I have just started on an Inquisitor and his hangers-on http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=207107.msg2607068#msg2607068). I don't think I've finished a single one yet..! It'll probably be a standard (?) Cadian force, as I rather like the look of it, and the 'history'... that said, I love your Macragge PDF... but then it is all beautifully painted.

We need to see more..!

Always enjoyable to see your work StraightSilver. Bloody hell those decals do look good! No silvering, flashing, crinkling, tearing or anything. They look painted on.

The valkeyrie is very striking; that white underhull really sets it off.

Cheers guys, I must admit I hadn't realised it had been more than 3 months since I last posted!! Oops! :)

Unfortunately "real life" keeps intefering with my hobby, but things seemed to have quietened down a bit for now so I intend to cram in as much painting as possible.

@Those: Owen mate you're worse than me!!! :) So you now have Space Wolves, Word Bearers, Death Watch, I think Grey Knights? and Inquisition on the go right now! Not that I can talk, I still haven't finished my Ultras or my Black Templars, my Cadians still have tons left to do on them and I have a 1500pt Dark Eldar army sitting in boxes giving me evils, a 1500pt Blood Angels army in boxes that may never see the light of day and don't even talk to me about my Forge World cupboard of doom!!!

At least your stuff gets done though, I love your Space Wolves and your Chaos Marines must be up to gaming levels now? We should really meet up for a game!

I have to say though that the Guard plastics are fantastic, and work so well with other kits. The Cadians are awesome though, and a standard 8th Cadian is fun to paint, if you want a nice quick and effective paint recipe for them let me know, I can paint them in my sleep now. In fact sometimes I do....

And the trouble with Guard armies is, not only do you never truly finish one, but I can guarantee once you start one, you will want to do another. My next Guard army will be a Krieg Artillery Company.

@Rems: Cheers, I am glad I did the white underside but man it was a pain! At least I can look at it without wanting to cry now! ;)

And cheers about the decals. Up until now I have sort of had an unspoken policy that I wouldn't use them, for exactly the reasons you stated. I hate the silvering, the air bubbles, not geeting them straight and worst of all the tearing.

I couldn't really avoid it on this model as my freehanding skills are ok on very tiny things, but a bit rubbish on large flat areas. So I followed the instructions in the Forge World Masterclass book which were very helpful, and I think they turned out ok.

It was a bit touch and go for a while though as I encountered some problems, maybe I should do a tutorial type thing on it as I learnt a lot?

StraightSilver,

you know a tutorial on those decals would be most welcome. The way you've applied them really does look excellent.

Great to see you're still working on this, and awesome work on the Valkyrie. I considered doing the white underside with my own, but decided against it, seeing yours though, I kind of wish I had.

Also, I can relate on the IG ADD, aside from my most Cadian army (some Catachan bits mixed in), I've got a platoon of Vostroyans, two squads of Elysians and a Tauros or two, some FW Tallarn snipers, and I swear those Death Korps models are calling to me. Anywho, keep up the great work, it's an inspiration for me to get off my ass and paint my own stuff!

Very inspirational, Your blog was the motivation I needed to get my odd IG guards painted up as boys in blue.
When the Biel-tan fled there home worlds they left behind many living people on many worlds, however unknown to them a world survived unharmed and unchanged there name was forever changed to Althan.

Hi guys,

well I must admit, it's been a while! I have to admit that I have pretty much been out of the hobby for a good few months so apologies for not updating in quite a while.

However things seem to be getting back on track so I have some new pics to show.

I have been working through my transports, so have some Guilliman Pattern Chimeras almost finished. Not quite, but almost....

I have shown these before, but that was before I highlighted them so it is progress. :)

It wasn't until I started putting the pics on my PC that I noticed I have forgotten to varnish a few decals! Doh! So they will get done this week.

First up is my counts as Straken's personal transport.

HQ: Company Command Chimera

Still a bit more work to do, and then a bit of weathering but it is almost finished.

Troops: Tactical 190

Troops: Tactical 450

Troops: Platoon Command

Sorry to bombard with pics, just wanted to get all these up together. I have some more stuff to show but will do that later.

Cheers. :)

You know I have the same face while watching this thread as when I'm watching porn, I've got a big smile and I'm very excited lol.

It can't be helped, these babies are extremely beautiful.

It's just such a joy to see such armies on display. All the hard work, but completely worth it!

Btw it's there a possibility for requests?
I want to see a baneblade painted like this ,mhuhaha  ;D !

If I will be honest, I don't know what I should say.
This army is just the cleanest, and one of the best I've ever seen!
I'm also a fan of Ultramarines, which is making the whole thing better, it's fantastic! :D

I love your conversions, I love your painting style, and I can't wait to see more of you, keep up the good work!

Cheers everybody,

Thanks for all the positive feedback, it really does help me to keep motivated. Must      Finish       Army..... :)

Unfortunately I won't be adding a baneblade to this list, as much as I would love to as I can think of some great ways to mix in Marine parts.

However some of the oldest fluff states that after the Heresy all marine Chapters were forbidden from keeping or maintaining Fellblades and Baneblades, as a Space Marine Baneblade is just too scary to think about. :)

I know that this army is strictly a Guard army, but it is attached to a Space Marine company, so I didn't want to do too much damage to the background by having a baneblade in Ultramarines colours.

This doesn't stop me having a couple of Macharius though, which I think will fit in with the army aesthetic better, as my Chimeras were intended to look similar.

Talking of bigger tanks I have also finally decided to add a Russ to the list.

I didn't want to add a Russ as it didn't really fit in with the fast moving second company, but unfortunately having played the list for a while now it really suffers without any AV14.

This will eventually be a Ryza Pattern Vanquisher, but I am still waiting for the FW bits so thought I may as well go ahead and build it as it is in the box for now, and I can always swap and change it as necessary.

There are some subtle marine parts used on the sponsons, and the turret cuppola is a Rhino one. Plus of course the SM Vindicator Dozer Blade as well.

I hope to satrt painting this fella up over the weekend whilst I finish off the Chimeras. Hopefully..... :)
