Dan Abnett was named as writer for the Ultramarine movie. Want to know more?

Quote
ULTRAMARINES: Codex Pictures Announce Director and Writer!
Codex Pictures revealed today the director and screenwriter for the forthcoming Warhammer 40,000 movie ULTRAMARINES.

The director is Martyn Pick, whose credits include the 2009 film The Age of Stupid, on which he was animation director; London 2012, the promotional film commissioned by Film London and the London Development Agency which was premiered at the Beijing Olympics; the 2001 US Budweiser NBA commercial; and the celebrated BBC promotional trailers for the Euro 2004 soccer tournament. Martyn was chosen to direct Ultramarines for his renowned and highly distinctive ability to fuse live action and animation and the fluid, rich painterly style of his film-making.

The screenplay has been written by someone who needs no introduction to Warhammer 40,000 fans – best-selling author Dan Abnett. Dan has penned more than 25 books for Games Workshop’s Black Library, with total sales in excess of 1.2 million copies. He also works regularly for 2000 AD, Marvel Comics and DC Comics and has recently seen publication of the first of three novels for HarperCollins' new sci-fi, fantasy and horror imprint, Angry Robot.

ULTRAMARINES, a sci-fi thriller employing CGI and state-of-the-art production techniques, is being produced by Codex Pictures in association with Good Story Productions Ltd. The Canadian co-producer is POP6 Studios.

Does that mean that the entire movie will be computer animation, like Cars, Toy Story, etc. or does it mean that the special effects will simply be enhanced by computer animation, but the acting will be real people being filmed (eg. Lord of the Rings, Reign of Fire)?  :-\

It is going to be in full CGI.  The company making it is the same one that made the Bionicle movies a while back, if you're familiar with those.

I'm not familiar with them, no.  That's disappointing.

I suppose if it's like Beowulf, it could be worth seeing, but I was really hoping it would be a first-run production.  :-\

One can only hope its not too damn hokey. How many times have we wanted to see a story told the RIGHT way, only to end up with utter crap...Remember Dune?....You'd need a book full of 'what has come before..' to NOT dumb down the movie to non-40K watchers....

I have faith in The Emperor Dan Abnett to properly bring the 40k universe to the public eye.

Yes, Dan Abnett's presence has increased my faith in this movie.  I know some people look at his novels as "war porn" but I feel he does quite a good job with them.

I actually find it very hopeful that the movie will be animated, before I read that I could just see bad actors in cheesy cgi suits of armour and crappy special effects but if it will be animated such problems won't arise and the image can be much clearer. If it is anything close to the old Dawn of War intro it will measure up to my expectations, after all we can't really expect it to be good for real. ;)

I think you're both setting yourself up to be disappointed. I don't see GW spending the amount of money required to make a one and a half hour movie in that quality. I'm not even sure that Codex pictures have the competence to make it. They sure haven't shown it so far. But that might be due to the budget constraints of the bionicle movies.

IMO the script is whats most important and I'm glad Abnet is involved. They could have done far worse. After that I think the animation is more important then the actually rendering. The animation was good in the bionicle movies most of the time. They did have a few scenes in every movie that were kind of bad. But those were probably due to time constraints. So I have high hopes that they can pull this off. Though I have yet to see any example of more complicated animation (like actual human facial animation) from codex pictures.

Don't hope for to much. Making animated movies is very expensive. It also takes talented artists and so far codex pictures have yet to show what they can do. So far their only reference is the bionicle movies and it's not even established to what extent they were involved in those.

I survived the "CoC Crackdown".

FW has just put the new Lord of Chance on its preview page. There is also some more info from their news letter.

Hi There,
Christmas fast approaches and I`ve quite a few updates and items of news for you this newsletter, not to mention the long-awaited arrival of the mighty Lord of Change model previewed at UK Games Day. Keep an eye out for more newsletters coming soon with some more exciting surprises and previews for you.

Thanks
Alan Bligh

The Lord of Change
The main release for this newsletter is the fantastic Aetaos`rau`keres, Daemon Lord of Tzeentch. This massive 240mm tall (to the top of its summoned horrors) model which you can see Here, designed by Dan Cockersell, completes Forge World`s set of Daemon Lords for the great powers of Chaos, and is without doubt the most detailed we have released. The model itself is alive with extraordinary design work and malice as befits this Slayer of Souls, from the intricate feathers of its wings to the writhing nightmare mass of daemonic horrors being summoned into its grasp. Rules for this spite-filled and insane Daemon Lord, so dangerous as to be spoken of in hushed tones, even by Tzeentch’s twisted cultists, can be found in the forthcoming book, Imperial Armour Apocalypse II.

The Lord of Change is available to pre-order now for release the week commencing the 30th of November.

The Sons of Fenris
With the recent release of the great new Space Wolves Codex we’ve had lots of enquiries here at Forge World asking whether we are planning to do some more models for the warriors of Fenris. The simple answer to this is absolutely yes, and sooner rather than later in fact, with a Venerable Dreadnought on the way. Until then however, we do already have a number of Space Wolves accessories you can get your teeth into including a Terminator Conversion Set, Icons, Chapter Specific Doors and Brass Etch Symbols and of course our mighty Thunderhawk is available with Space Wolves iconography as well.

P.S. I forgot to add the last part of the newsletter:

Battlefleet Gothic Models back in stock
Recently, we have had a number of Battlefleet Gothic models temporarily out of stock while we have remade moulds, and I`m happy to say we have them back in production and available to purchase Now. We hope to have some of our other currently out of production Epic models back on sale soon.

Dawn of War 2 - Intro Video

Well itmay look like that, but just make sure you know the diffrence between the two studio's doing it. The Bionicle movie (3rd one I referenced) was done by Miramax films, whom are well known to me. The Dawn of War II intro was done by Blur Studios who specialize in making CGI trailers for games and films, but nothing huge. So it'll look different but I believe Ultramarines will look fantastic.

At the end when the Farseer says "no, this planet is thiers", and points to the sky. What is she referring to? I just see a moon and a bunch of clouds...

Sorry, I don't play the DoW games so I don't know any of the background...

the dark clouds you see that are kind of pointing down are the tendrils of the Tyranid hive fleet.  (Ack... ninja'd)

IC:  I know there are companies that specialise in doing short CGI clips that just look down right sexy, but it never hurts to dream right?  sure it might not be as fantastic, but technology has come a long way over the past few years... i mean look at the Blood Quest clips that were released.
