Imperial Guard color scheme (pic)
« on: February 11, 2003, 04:29:45 AM »
Ok, I'd like you guys to rip this apart...

I've been off the whole painting thing for alot of years, but recently dug up my Blood Bowl stuff again. Figured I'd sell off my old WHFB and 40k-stuff (hardly painted anything and almost never played).

Basically, I've been painting for ages but extremely sporadic and not even on a "regular hobby" level. Also, this is the first time in years I paint anything but a Blood Bowl orc. :D

Usually I'm _superslow but this guy didn't take me more than some a few hours... :D I know, that's slow as well.

Anyways, main point of painting him up is that I'm starting an IG army and wanted to try out this colour scheme I plan on using on my cadians.

and based:

Managed to get a splodge of bubonic on the boot though... Didn't notice until now. =(

Stuff I myself am not very happy with:
* The boots.
I just can't see contours on a black part of a mini. My eyesight is too poor... (new glasses coming though) When I look at the boots, based in black, it's just a black blur. That's why I surrendered to drybrushing them. :(

* The eyes.
Same thing here. I basically painted the eyes blind folded as I can't see the detail that up close when it's all in one colour. They look a bit off, and one of the eyes was probably redone 5-6 times. If I had some putty around, I'd made him an eye patch. :D

*The gun.
It's incredibly rushed, I couldn't get it the way I wanted so I lost patience and painted some very basic highlights on black, and then washed it with black wash. Afterwards, I drybrushed a few greys on it. Curse my patience! :)

*The "flap" on the uniform, below the gun.
The outline on the flap there looks very uneven and if I hadn't been so impatient when painting him I'd redone it.

Actually, come to think of it... The whole model looks like amphetamine parrot on a close up pic like this. Looks alot better on an arm's length... as all of us who've taken pics of our minis know. :D

Oh, btw... The base is done now. Snakebite leather, and then bubonic drybrush. Probably should've taken another pic after that so you could get a proper image of him. Oh well, imagine a nicer looking base plz... ;)

Anyways, I'd love to hear some constructive criticism. I'm really getting into this whole painting thing again, and am looking to improve my skills. First I'd like to have a dedicated modeling and painting desk though... Too small apartment for that though, and my girlfriend doesn't like the idea of having a desk full of paint and minis in a corner in the kitchen. :D

Funnily enough, i like the mini. Eyes actually are great, especially if you envision that guy standing in front of a lictor.

As far as constructive criticism, i'm empty here. Being a single guard out of 100 I don't really think anybody will notice small problems with it.

I was mainly hoping for input on the colours chosen... I don't feel they're out of place as a military uniform colour, especially not if we imagine alien worlds where sand ranges from blueish to greyish... :)

Alternatively, he could fit well in an icey environment, apart from the fact that he has the sleeves rolled up. Oh well, macho men of Cadia. What are we to do about them? :D

Advantages of it (painting wise) is that it's quick and consist of a few colours.

White primer.
Chaos Black on boots and gun.
Space Wolves Grey the whole uniform.
Shadow Grey on helmet, shoulder pads and accessories (like water flask).
Skull White on straps and rolled up sleeves.
Vomit brown in the face.
For shadows and highlights, I used black wash (mixed up with water and Shadow Grey) for the uniform, flesh wash in the face, highlighted with bronzed flesh.
Boltgun and Mithril on the metal details.

Hm, maybe not THAT few paints... but nothing compared to an eldar harlequin! ;)

Thanks for the kind words though, much appreciated. :)

I think the mini's well done, too. Only one thing: shouldn't the back of his neck (on the right-hand photo) be painted in ... flesh? Or is this some sort of protection-flap the mini has modeled onto it? And the skin of arms and face could be a little more similar-colored... a little highlighting in the face might do the trick, though.

As for the thing with the boots: this is always the same, isn't it? (I'm glad to hear someone else complain about it , too, at last) Carefully highlighting the shoes of every single soldier is just way too much work for my taste, but this seems to be the only way to make 'em look good. Mostly, I end up doing nothing except a hasty drybrush on them, as well.

The other points you complained about ... well, it seems apparent to me that you must have been painting the more unique and individual minis from BB, as you dare to criticize, e.g., eyes like these.

Have a thought or two about how long it might take you to paint, like, 50 to 120 soldier boys for your IG force in a manner completely satisfactory to you an a level of the single miniature. (That would mean doing up to 240 perfect eyeballs!  :o )

IMHO, it's cleverer to paint some good-looking squads in acceptable time, and save the over-the-top detail work for charakters and maybe weapon specialists, etc.

Just my two creds.

I think it looks like a very decent color scheme. They white base, gray wash, blue features give a nice uniform look.

Just a few things I noticed though.

Darken his arms a bit to mach his face. It appears that you just forgot to wash them when doing the face.

The rolled up sleeves on his arms look a bit too white. I don't know if you were going for that look since it is supposed to be the inside of the cloth, but just a light wash would make it look better I think.

The back of his neck does appear to be some sort of cloth hanging down from the cap. It looks good as is.

Remember, wait until the paint is fully dried before handling. Those fingerprints in the base really throws it off.

One of my new years resolutions was to do one thing I'm afraid of every day... That's why I'm collecting IG. I'll paint one eye every day. :D

Nah, seriously... I know exactly what you mean with considering the time factor. However, I can not lower my standards any further as I wouldn't be at all happy with the end results.

I'm pretty sure that when I've got 10-15 of these cadians below my belt, the process of painting them will have evolved somewhat and be faster. It's important for me to have miniatures which carry their weight on a single miniature basis. I don't want someone picking one of them up going "heh, your dog painted this?" :)

I agree on the face colour contra arms colour. It's a result of the heavier shades in the face. The highlighting colour used is actually the same as on the arms.

The neck seems to be of uniform material when I look at the models. It's not supposed to be skin (i think).

Abra: The thumb print is from the primer. It was cold outside when I primed, so I sprayed it on the balcony and then picked it up by the base to bring it in to dry before continuing with the spraying. The base is completed now, but I don't have a new pic of it. I went with a sand coloured base, as I'm not making a grass gaming table at home. If I'm ever making my own gaming table it'll be desert themed for my Gorka Morka boyz... :) Won't happen for a while, as the current apartment is too small for me, my girlfriend, our dog and a gaming table. :D I know that won't match my colour scheme, however it's not a camouflage scheme... think of them as praetorians or mordians. Those guys don't tupenny shuffle about in camouflage either. :D

I'm 100% self taught, apart from reading articles a great many times... Never had anyone to show me the techniques though, had to figure that part out for myself.

Thanks for the praise though! :)

Best tip I can give you is to just take it easy when painting, thin out the paints a little and read up on tutorials etc on basic painting techniques like shading and highlighting through blending.

Also, I'm writing an article series for Grim Stalker to be published on his Imperial Guard site (http://www.imperial-hosting.net/~grimstalker/) where I'm gonna tell the tale of a fool hardy newbie (that'd be me) who sets out to collect Imperial Guard. It's written in a personal perspectiv, not from a gaming mechanics point of view.

In this, I'll rant in detail about exactly how this miniature (and the rest of my IG) were painted.

lol, well the first thing wrong is that is IMP guard! lol, im j/k but i dont like the Imps that much. stupid humans!

the models looks better than that of which any1 around here could do, sep me i could do that  ;).  the eyes arent bad, but i hate painting them just the same.  as for the rest, everything looks in working order, so what is that guards got some 'nid guts, fromt a guand im sure he could of killed (yeeeaaahh right..) on his boot, lol. but as for the uneven ness of the flap... id go back and fix it, i couldnt stand seeing that every time i glance to look at him... and for the boots, you think about how many that poor old shoe maker has to make, they cant all be master work!   ;D but i do think the boots are ok, but im not at al experienced with high lights yet, sep for my nids, but they're just easyer for some reason...
