Flakk Missiles
« on: June 18, 2015, 08:57:24 PM »
It's been a long time since I've played 40k. I had some extra time and visited my local shop and found a lot of the books have been updated. I haven't played 40k since 5th edition when the IG and DH books were paperback  ;D

Right now, I don't have any Hydras for AA, but I do have a couple of missile launchers. I was wondering what everyone's opinions on Flakk Missiles were. They seem like they could be viable in heavy weapons squads, but 120 points seems like a lot since I could get 2 infantry squads with 20 points to spare for special/heavy weapons. What do you all think?

Depends on your local meta, will you be encountering death from above all that often? I used too, ever since 4th, hence my Hydras from way back then It's only gotten worse since.

I don't really know you're codex but more often than not i see aegis line with autocanon for anti air in ig list were there is no flyers. From what I remember your anti air missile are super expensive.

I've never seen anyone, in any army, take flakk missiles.  Aircraft aren't all that prevalent these days so they aren't worth the points since they are useless against non fliers.  Better to take a vendetta and have something versatile.

Just get a hydra. It's cheap to field and it's a cool model and it should give you some reasonable AA. Granted, the Aegis+Quad gun might be more useful, but that only if you plan on using the Aegis a lot.

I really do like the Hydra model. I was waiting for it to become available without having to get it off forge world. Most of the flyers that I've seen in my area are Valkyries, Storm Talons, and sometimes Storm Ravens. Rarely, do I see other players bring flyers. If I'm lucky I'll occasionally see the Eldar and Necron flyers. Never seen a Helldrake though.

Thanks for the input on the Flakk Missiles everyone. Right now, I plan on playing a few small games to help learn the new rules and adjust to them.

I would always put at at least one anti air weapon into my lists just to be on the safe side.  Now, this might get laughed at, but I actually like the idea of flak missiles.  With frag and krak ones also included, the launchers are weapons that can take on nearly any target presented to them.  I like having that piece of mind.  Having said that though, lascannons and hydras do the anti tank and anti air better.  :P

I would say that *if* you're going to take missile launchers anyway (which I wouldn't, because they're awful for the points), then Flakk missiles aren't a bad idea. However, don't take missile launchers just to have flakk missiles.

I think I'd just get two more squads and heavy weapons and dare my opponent to destroy enough of my stuff with his fliers to make 'em worth taking.

A couple of flakk missiles aren't going to affect a flier-heavy army, and they're wasted against an opponent with no fliers.  I'd say either "go big" on anti-air, or don't go at all!
