Wound counters
« on: June 18, 2017, 07:35:50 PM »
Now that 40k has crazy number of wounds, is anyone using something better than dice to keep track of them?

Just use D10's and D20's. You can get them pretty cheap. That's what I have used for games with lots of wounds on models (like Frostgrave and Age of Sigmar).

The only other things is some sort of token, like wound counters, but have some for ones, and some for other multiples of 5 to keep near the models, or keep track on a separate piece of paper.

One thing I've seen is people using colored rings they hang on the models to keep track of wounds too.

Nothing out of the ordinary for games like BattleTech. Have a sheet of paper and update wounds as appropriate. For the fancy you could have boxes to cross off rather than a running tally. For the really fancy you make notes of what happened for follow up battle reports.

If you want to get really elaborate you could print out some pieces of paper with an appropriate number of boxes, with special marks at specific intervals for vehicles and such being degraded; laminate them; and use dry erase markers.
If there is anything that recent politics has taught us, it is that quotes taken out of context can mean what ever you want them to.

What's it like living in the Palace, your highness?  :)

Good ol' paper with boxes to pen over is enough for the likes of us.

Plastic rings, just use differend colors for 1 wound, 5 wounds and 10 wounds.
Most things with lots of wounds does degrade, so maybe some kind of marker to just indicate each step would be nice?
Now you would only need to count the wounds within that step. :)

Small poker chips would work well. Just stack them next to the wounded model.

Eight pounds for eight dice  :o.  I think not.

It's far easier just to use the dice Killersquid referred to.  I picked up a whole bunch of such dice very cheaply a few years ago.  You can also borrow them from old board games, such as Advanced Heroquest.

The alternative is the pen and paper route, wound counters (which I would personally raid my copy of Advanced Heroquest for, but they're easy to make) or just use coloured counters from board games perhaps.

does any one use wound dials? Are they just too fiddley compared to dice.

Right now for large Wound models I'm just puting the Dice on the skull servo things GW put out for Damage dice on Vehicles. Means I can keep using the same dice pools with out getting them mixed up.

I love wound dials, I just don't tend to have enough for all my units. I use them in Age of Sigmar all the time.

Make some fancy counters with numbers in Powerpoint. Print a few sheet on thick paper and cut out.
Personally I have a few 10/12/29 sided dice because I played RPGs.
But I still like a nice looking counter on the bigger models.
sure you have an opinion,
but my swordplay is better than your´s

Take my advice, I never use it.
