Castellan Crowe - What do we reckon of him?
« on: August 14, 2012, 05:36:46 PM »
I can't wrap my head around him. Every time I look at him I compare him to Skulltaker out of habit and see him glowing, but the lack of Independent Character irks me massively.

I kind of want him for the idea of him alone (I love Purifiers), but that glaring flaw is something I can't get past.

The only reason to take him is for purifiers really. They are awesome enough which makes it worth the penalty of taking him.

Aye, that was part of my thinking. I use them enough as it is, may as well make them more than swords.

He's kind of funny when you put him on defense. He can sit tight and hold off random units trying to ninja your home objective with his rending cleansing flame of stupidity.

Agreed. He's actually scarily good at crowd control, even on his own...

As soon as the book was released my immediate army idea was to have a nicely compact but cool force of purifiers (in razorbacks) led by Crowe (as a must). But it was only after a little while that I realised that he didn't have the IC special rule. I first thought this was a mistake - but no FAQ came to correct this and it's clear it was indeed no mistake.

This is annoying because I can't run the style of army I wanted to simply because it's a sad day when you have to make your commanding officer run around behind your units and unable to hitch a lift!

I shelved the idea because no matter how cool I thought the army could be, I, like you, just couldn't get past wtf to do with Crowe!? He just didn't fit into the dynamic of the force I wanted!

I love crowe, I will admit he usefulness is questionable sometimes but if he get into close combat he is just plain amusing.  I have had him cut strait through horde units.  A tip, you can always not use cleansing flame when crowe charges in and just tie the unit up only to murder it during your opponents assault phase.

A nid player I knew was bragging about how no HQ could take a brood of genstealers, crowe accepted that challenge, and won.  ;D ;D

Its getting him into CC is the hard part...

So wait, his Flame power also Rends?! Mother of Christ...

In terms of getting him around, I literally found a spare Razorback in my bits box. Provided I acquire a unit of Purgators, I can have them purchase it and have it give Crowe a ride.

Personally I think Purgators should keep the ride and take all incinerators. I don't feel psycannons on purgation squads is that good of an idea.

I just make him hoof it. With run he can usually keep up with a rhibo chassis and stay in decent cover. Try and aim him at something advancing he can harm.

He can protect a MSU scoring unit and/or a fire base in your deployment zone single handedly.

Rhino w min GKSS (scoring unit) - w warp quake for DS protection
GK 'Psyfleman' Dread x2 - uses Rhino for cover
This is vulnerable to a horde assault ... oh wait ... Crowe saves the day!

All this while your Storm Raven (under covering fire) zooms to attack the enemy chock full of Purifiers! Hazaah!

I love taking him, then adding IC's to him to make a brutal little unit.  DS them in and just watch them wreck stuff

Errr.... page 39 in the rule book states that you can't do that.  First paragraph.

I really like the idea of an army that's so awesome that its on fire :D
I just can't seem to get an army list in my head since everything is so expensive but dies just like any other MEQ.

It doesn't, I think they're misinterpreting the Master Swordsman Special Rule:

"His close combat attacks have the Rending special rule, and will rend on a To Wound roll of 4 or more"

It states his close combat attacks, not all attacks made in an assault.  Only the attacks he makes on his initiative during what is now the fight sub-phase.

I figured as much.  Rending flames would have him taking out half the engaged models every half turn.  That would be beyond broken.
