New Wraithlord Conversion, My first!
« on: July 7, 2006, 11:08:57 AM »
This is my first conversion besides really simple stuff, I think he came out pretty well. Any comments/questions/suggestions are welcome as always.

thats very nice, its a good conversion, relativly simple but well executed... more over i like the way its painted, the similar blends of blue around the leg and feet area, yet maintaining the colours separatly not blended is good, and very interesting.  the painting as a whole is very nice but i think the flames need lightening.

great conversion

PS i love the face its so characterful

Dammit dude that looks awesome!

I'm not too fond on the flames which look seemingly... fleshy, also the knuckles look unpainted, never ever paint a whole surface white.
Otherwise great job, i love the head.

Likes:
the Base and model stance,
the sculpting/GS work of the flame and face,
the colour palette, especially that the Gemstones are all matching and offset the Blue tone.
the overall look/feel.

Didslikes:
the unblended look of the paint,
the lack of "Flame" highlights,
the "White" knuckles,
the lack of icons.

Overall, I would give it a 7.5 out of 10 as it is a very good model that shows some truely awesome potential.

Cheers and Happy gaming.

Sorry, i just noticed that all gems are red, too bad. :'(

Try using more colours for the gemstones, paint some gems like the lights on your computer, they look very good with the blues and reds you used.

My, my, the peanut gallery is being relatively brutal today.  I think it's an outstanding model, though I share the general sentiments that the flame is the weak part of the model.  The sculpting on the face is great and the paint is pleasing and well-balanced.

Yea I expected some criticism but I thought it turned out pretty well, apparently not everyone loves the deranged wraithlord as much as I do.

In any case the weak points:
-The white finger plates. It was 2:30 so I kinda slacked, Im thinking ill do a dark grey center to white fade on them.
-The flames

How do you suggest I fix the flames, if anyone has any experience or advice on how to make them brighter, I'd appreciate it, I was a bit stumped on how to do em.

Good job Targetawg!  I don't know how much sculpting you do, but it takes confidence to jump in and add that much green stuff to a model and the results are great!

For more ideas on flames (though most are sculpting but you should get some painting ideas from it) check out http://us.games-workshop.com/games/warhammer/painting/fire/default.htm.

Good luck adding your finishing touches to this!

Cheers

This is the first time I've ever used green stuff for anything besides filling gaps actually...

Edit: Just checked out that post you put up of the fire link, that helped me a TON with how to paint it, I plan on possibly resculpting or just repainting it in the near future, probably resculpting now that I have that tutorial. Thanks again!

Very good.  I'm an ork, so everything that doesn't involve stealing someone else's tank and writing "Mine now, 'umie!" on it looks subtle to me now.  Anyways.  The face looks a little Chaosy to me, or maybe Dark Eldar.  I kinda like the unblended paint on the legs.  It's more visually intreging.  The gems are nice, but the flames don't have that dancing fire look.  It looks almost wadded.

This model is very nice.

My favorite part has to be how well the jewels fit in with the model.

The only thing I don’t like is the face. It's cool, but it seems a bit uneldarly (is that a word??).

I love the way he turned out, he looked impressive running through the trees in my tournament last weekend. My two pet peeves about him are the flame, which I'll most likely end up redoing, and the face. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I think it almost looks chaos-ish.

Ah well, I have a second wraithlord who's gonna get a similar treatment at some point, we'll see what we do with him..

With the flame being the weak point this example of a weapon spouting flame is the best I have found.

Hope it will help;

It is done by Victoria Lamb and very experienced painter, but the idea should help.

The problem with the GW way of painting is it's actually the wrong way round. For fire (heat) the lighter colours (white, yellow) are hotter and therefore in the middle and close to the source. The outer and further away layers are your oranges and then reds.

There shouldn't be any dark patches in the flame, it's a source of light. Add more sunburst yellow especially near the weapon and more orange through the rest of it with yellow in the crevaces. Red for the outer areas that are further away. The model Dragyn linked to is a great example and it's in the Witch Hunter's Codex too I think (it's in one of the books).

Your model is great. There are always those who won't like your style. I don't think the imagery of the face is suited to the Eldar, but I think it's a cool conversion never the less.

That does look pretty damn sweet.  Maybe it is just the brightness of the picture but maybe a little lightening of the flames.  I would like it even that much more if you had converted another flamer on the left arm, that is if you field it that way like most other Eldar players.

Very nice paint job!

its pretty cool, but I dont really get it. I can picture one with eyes like normal eldars, but a crazy big mouth? But very solid model, good conversion and exelent paint job.
