WIP Exodite World (with pics)
« on: June 5, 2010, 04:45:07 PM »
So I already made a topic about my other gameboard project which was a cities of death one called Vesperion. That board was alright and achieved its purpose, it was meant to be cheap, easy and quick to make. I still had a couple more thing to do to call it entirely finished, but for the most part, it was done, and was okay. I mentioned since then that I've been wanting to make an Exodite board, but still needed enough stuff to use as scenery. Well, early this year, an earthquake hit Chile (where I live) of about 8.5 in the richter scale. Fortunately, neither my house nor my family was harmed because of it, but a lot of my mother's vases and jars got broken, which I took as an opportunity to make terrain. Now I had enough bits and pieces to warrant an eldar board so I started to work on it and stuck my Vesperion board inside the closet.

The idea was that this is an Exodite (or Maiden) world which had seen war some centuries ago, but still has some ruins and scars to show for it. Still don't know how to name the planet though, but I'll figure that out later. Anyway, some of the terrain pieces I'll be showing are mostly done but still need a few finishing details (extra plants, some runes, some iconography, etc...), other pieces are halfway done, some are barely in the planning phases, so bare that in mind. Anyway, to the pics. Here's what the whole board looks like:

The links below the pics show the same terrain but in different angles:

Tower Ruins: The idea for this terrain was to finally have something in which walkers and MCs could get cover and maybe still get to shoot, what with TLOS and all. Of course it still work just fine for other units and might in some cases entirely obscure them. These were the leftover big pieces of my mom's plaster vases, they didn't warrant a tower, but made a great piece of terrain with rubble. The base (as with most of every other piece of terrain I'll show) is a wooden board with smoothed edges and textured with a mix of sawdust and PVC glue. Then just some paint and fake grass. The idea is to have a large enough base for most terrain pieces to represent the area in which infantry gets cover.

Transmitter(?): Not entirely sure what this is supposed to be really, just thought it looked cool and eldar-like. The base is from a broken lamp, the ball was a broken web cam, and the "poles" on the sides came with my socks and were barely modified at all. And it also has a piece from the Falcon kit to cover a hole in the back. The small tree/bush thing I made with the standard wire twisting and "paper maché-ing", this is the smallest one I made because I barely had any wires left :P. The other plant came from an aquarium fake weeds pack, which works really well and gives you a lot of vegetation if you cut it up into pieces.

Tower Base: The plaster vases I used to make my towers (which you'll see a bit further down) were actually upside down to how you see them, some of the were just broken from their bases. One vase's top was intact so I just left that one stand by itself, meaning I could use the base for something else. Not much to comment about this one, except that it was too small by itself so, like with most of my terrain, I also decided to give it a bigger base and make it more game-friendly.

Webway Portal: This might not look like the standard webway portal you see everywhere, but it still look cool IMO and quite Eldar-like. It's made out of a bathroom mirror holder, some pieces of an Episode I SW toy and some cardboard and wood which I cut to make the "blades" at the top. A relatively simple piece but which I think works quite well. And as usual I also gave it a base.

Exposed Tower: Here's one of the plaster vases I've mentioned, it the one whose top wasn't damaged so it can stand by itself. First thing you'll notice is that they look really ugly from the inside, but there's not much I can do to fix that other than maybe use some fluff to explain it, like since wraithbone is psy-active, it might have been distorted from the inside because of warp activity during previous battles. And of course it was entirely hollow so to make the tower more usable I had to give it some levels. I did this by using some modeling sticks, cardboard and the sawdust/PVC glue mix to cover the gaps on the edges. Personally, I think it worked quite well, though game-wise, you might notice the levels are too high from the ground and each other, so when we use it in a game we'll probably say they're actually much shorter. And this time around the base has larger trees, from when I had more wire to work with.

Craters: These were actually made by a friend who had a desert themed board, but had to leave it when he moved. It took the opportunity to rescue his craters and add them to my board. He made them by heating up a knife and a cooking pan and using them on pieces of polystyrene, which gave them a really cool look IMO. Painting them was a pin though, he said. I just have to repaint them to better fit my board and they'll be done. We'll probably use them to place wherever a vehicle will explode rather than terrain.

Intact Tower: This tower is mostly finished, and I made it out of an ice cream container, a mayonnaise bottle, the bottom of an ice cooler and some more bits that came with my socks. The base still needs to be painted and it's just primed in black so far. You can still see what the trees look like before painting and adding the green sponge on them.

Damaged Tower: This is the other plaster vase whose top was damaged, so it needs the base at the bottom to stand up. Its just been primed in white so far and needs a couple of extra coats of paint to make it look finished. The base is also just primed in black and need work. The idea I thought for this terrain (since the vase is detached from the base) was that you could attack the base and make it fall in a random direction by using the dispersion dice. It would be a fun game mechanic to have in a game and would even work for creating instant cover on the board.

Hill Fort: This thing gave me a lot of trouble thinking what to do with it. It was originally a toy volcano, so first thing I did was cover the carters on the platforms to make it more usable in a game. I did that with some modeling sticks, cardboard and the sawdust/PVC glue mix. But it still looked to bland and uninteresting. Then I figured out it would look cool with another small tower I made out of joining two water bottles together and a platform that used to be a virgin CDs container. I had to cut the CD thing to fit the side of the hill so I used the spare part to glue it on top and make it look like the top had some cover there at some point as well. I just need to use some more of the mix to cover the gaps on the side of the platform, but it should look just fine after that. Then I'll also probably add some stairs to show how the minis would move around and a small bridge connecting the tower to the top platform. Though in the end I decided to leave out the tower and make another piece of scenery with it.

Titan Rubble: This might be my most ambitious piece of terrain, but one I really want to make. I used to have this big "Independence Day" alien toy whose face looked a lot the face of the titan. With no real purpose I decided to cut out the face and make a titan head, maybe to use as an objective marker or something. The rest of the toy did make some good spare parts so I still used the rest of it (Woody and Buzz would hate me >_<). Anyway, I noticed I don't have much big terrain like the hill fort, so I figured I'd make another piece of terrain that would look like a fallen eldar titan. I wouldn't have to actually make the whole thing (and if I could then I certainly wouldn't use it as terrain), just the parts that would most stick out, like the wings and the weapons. After making the webway gate's blades, I felt enough confidence to make the wings out of wood by myself, and as for the pulsars, a couple of big brush handles would work just fine, with very little tweaking. The rest would just be natural rubble and plants covering up the rest of the body, and it would be a fairly big piece of terrain too. I still need to get working on this but here's the Titan face so you see what it looks like so far (its not ready yet).

Small Forest: I don't have a specific photo of this terrain, but you can see it from the pic that shows the whole board pasted below this text. It used to be a lego base that came with a lego T-Rex, and I drilled out all of the lego spots on it, textured it a little, painted it and added some GW jungle trees. I thought the trees might clash a bit against the rest of the vegetation, which is why I'm making a couple more of them with what bits I had, which you can see at the side of the Titan mask above.

And that's it, I hope you enjoyed it and have some feedback for me. I still haven't finished the Titan rubble or the extra tower terrain with the tower I decided not to use on the "hill fort", but I'll eventually get around to do them.

Oh a nice terrain project (LoL.. told you it was nice on the other thread).
I like the whole idea. The round shapes in everything makes me feel the eldarish style.
What  I would change is:
A) the colors are too shiny. Maybe this is due to the paints you use, or to the lack of mat varnish. But IMO you should do something about it.
B) I would add water to the crates. That way it would give a level up to the project, without doing something serious.
C) dude.. you posted this project to the project blog, and not in the terrrain. How the heck should we (we who feedback the terrains) see this..? hehe!!

regards,
Dimitris

Well, its a terrain project, and the title should've been a dead giveaway :P. As for the glossiness, that only the forest, nothing else looks glossy. And the forest isn't even that glossy, the picture just makes it look that way for some reason.

I have a friend that was wanting to build eldar Terrain. I am going to show him your stuff. My next question is, do you mind if I steal an Idea or two?  I really like the Vase Idea, and I have a bunch of old Vases (much smaller ones) that I have been meaning to get rid of.

I love what you have made, Props!

Thanks, and go ahead and plagiarize if you like to :P, that's one of the reasons people upload their stuff to this forum I figure ::).
