Eldar tactics in Battlefleet gothic
« on: July 6, 2003, 03:20:12 AM »
Being That BFG is a 40k universe game, and this is a question regarding Eldar tactics, this seemed to be the place to post this  ;D

Anyway, I'm just now getting into BFG, and I'm trying to find my way with the very delicate but remarkably agile Eldar fleet. As far as the rules on them go, I'm solid. As far as tactics go, I'm a bit lost in some areas.

In particular, I am rather concerned about facing the Fleets of Chaos. While Impy Fleets tend to have lots of 2+ Holo-saveable lances, Chaos ships have a crapload of massed batteries, and quite frankly one extra column shift isn't going to save me.

So far I have these ideas in mind:

1. use torpedo swarms to force them to either take hits or move into a position where they cant get a good shot at you.

2. use that ordinance phase move to get into a position where they have to fire at you at +30cm abeam (two more column shifts)

That will them at the far right column for shooting at both your cruisers and escorts. Still, I've been crunching the numbers, and with that 4+ armor on the Eldar ships, even a few gunnery hits are going to be a problem...

Any Eldar BFG vets care to weigh in on this one?
I would love to be able to get some gothic games in over this EoT summer.

One problem I often have when I play BFG is feeling like I have to fire my ships if possible, when sometimes it's better to just run away.  So against the chaos, for example, I think it would be best to keep your distance, even if it means only firing a couple torpedo volleys.  Try and get your opponent to split off lone ships so you can take them on one at a time.

In general though, BFG isn't as balanced between races as 40k is.  Chaos have an advantage against Eldar, and the Necrons are just terrifying.  Still a great game though.

Just to clarify, we don't get a holo-field save against the weapons batteries? That doesn't seem very smart.

Here's an idea I have been hatching. Take an eclipse cruiser, and every turn launch a fighter or bomber wing. Don't send them in right away, just let them orbit the eclipse. Once you have the entire payload out in space advance with the overwhelming wave of fighters and bombers with a torpedo wave in front and your cruisers and frigates behind...

Is that a doable tactic ruleswise?

You will all die.

i played it for a bit, well only once vs necrons. extremely tough game only reason i won was because his big ship was a burning hulk at the end of the game.
all i did was hide behind things and come out and shoot.

I'm not absolutely sure on this, but I think the opponent would get separate full-strength turret attacks aggainst all the waves of bombers, even if they came in simultaneously.  He'd have to choose between firing at torpedoes and firing at bombers, but once that choice is made he'd get shots at all the incoming ordnance of that type.

Keeping it far away until you come in for one big strike could help prevent it from getting shot at with a ship's main weapons though.
