Post by: Fuegan8688 on February 13, 2002, 10:27:00 PM
hello all, well, as a 14 year old, i have those pesky high school teachers on me, and well i gotta do a persuasive essay on why i think people should take up miniature gaming, and heres the thing, she needs more facts and opinions of others, so, all i really need, is for all who read this to tell me wether miniature modeling/gaming is worthwhile and why if you can!  thanks !!!

Damn High school teachers... ;D

40k is definatly worth it, (if you can see past the cost) I've met a heap of people I would have not normally, flex my artistic and tactical muscle, and just hang out with my mates for some good, honest, warfare.
Thats just it, its good fun with freinds, and I'm sure thats what everyone else will say.

Good luck with the essay

Minature gaming is is better for you than watching a film or TV which involves no interaction what so ever. Added to the fact that it provides countless hours of entertainment (not only the actual game but also the collecting, painting, modeling etc) It also allows one to socialise with other like minded individuals providing "a life" which most ignorant cretins seem to value so highly. Add to that a healthy dose of competion, the imaginative aspects (fiction, fluff and creating your own backstory), the learning of stratgey, tactics, and forward planning, the use of mathmatics (thru army creation), introduction to the concepts of ratios (dice rolling) and assesing acceptable risks, and you've got a pass time that is a lot more complex and adult than most people think. And it's a damn site healthier than sitting on your butt watching reruns of 90210 and thinking about how much beer your going to drink at Cindy's party on saturday night.

Hope this helps  ;)

ah, dammit...probably I'm gonna have to do one of these thingies too next year.....

but, that's besides the point.  Here's what I think:
Wargaming is all about fun, and it's a really fun hobby to get into.  Hence the word, FUN.
it's a hang-out-with-your-buddies-and-expand-your-mind kinda fun.  And it's really nifty to read about the worlds that the wargames are based on, too.  The wargame hobby is one of those hobbies that encourages critical thinking, and a desire to read and strategize, too.
the only thing that's not fun is forking over the money to buy all the stuff required to play.

P.S. I agree with vanquisherau on the everbody agreeing on the buddy factor, since you can't really play a wargame just by yourself (well, with the computer ytou can, but that's a whole nother story)!

IMHO,  miniatures gaming is good because it is a combination of chess (from the strategy), developing your art skills (model assembly and painting), and is a great way to socialize (through meeting various types of people with your same interests.  My friend, Carl, who is a die hard Space Marines player (and darn good!) also says the same things, and we are both over 25, college graduates with You Took What!? hard degrees, and were officers in our colleges' gaming clubs.  My impression from miniatures gaming (I play Mordheim, WFB, AND 40K) is that it makes me think all my moves in advance and come to the gaming tables with at least three different strategies and helps to keep my mind sharp.  Odd as it may sound, I have been performing better at work because I am able to think better and to solve problems quicker than before because I do miniatures gaming.  I never realized that I have some talent for preparing and painting miniatures.  I will NEVER be a Golden Demon competitor (my job has undoubetly insured that!), but I have gotten some "It looks good, man!" comments on my painted miniatures.  I have a unique color scheme for my Craftworld Lileath forces, and as far as I can tell my scheme is destinctive.  By having to go to local tournaments and going to the same store regularly I have met people that would have never met before.  The teens at the store that I game at ask me to help them with their 40K armies as far as strategies and painting tips.  I guess that makes me a mentor of sorts.
Most of all it is fun and is a constructive way to spend your time.  I only turn on my T.V. to watch my anime DVDs and to get the weather report.  I spent my time preparing and painting whatever I have primed.  When I am done with a miniature, I have a feeling of satisfaction because I have in my hand a work of art of sorts and a fruit of my labors.  I can show something for all the time that I spent on a miniature, but can't do that by mindlessly watching T.V. (besides, there's nothing on and I've got a Rogue Trader Tournament to attend in two months!).  I am also happy because I spend my time off in a constructive way by painting my armies and being a mentor by teaching people to play the Warhammer Gaming System (and no I am not an Outrider).  I hope that this helps you with your essay!

Yeah, it forces you to think critically, to learn to develope stratagy, to have patience, yadda-yadda-yadda...
For me, the social aspect is numero uno. By that, I mean that I believe the time spent gaming with your buds is time well spent, no matter what the wife may think. What beats the exileration of whipping one of your best pals like a rented mule? Nothing! We bring the cheese, and talk a lot of trash, while having an enjoyable afternoon, free from the hassles of ouir jobs, mortgages, and tax bills.
Are we a bunch of arrested adolescents? Sure. Geeks? You bet. ( Although we are geeks with good jobs and good-lookin' wives, unlike Das Uber-geeks that you see at a lot of tournements...) Do we care? No!
When we are old and feeble, we won't be looking back with fondness on all the stresses we used to have, but on the fun we had. Play the game. Stomp your friends, and rub their noses in it, and smile when they do the same to you.

It's cheaper than therapy...;D

`Boss!

I can't really come up with better reasons than have already been voiced.  People who enjoy the hobby all tend to voice similar justification.

Thing is, should you really have to justify this hobby above and beyond any other?  Every hobby has stereotypes and suchforth, eg Stampcollecting isn't really a hobby where I'd be able to go around and socialise with people (that doesn't mean that it is not worthwhile).

Definitely worth it.  It covers a range of hobbies (wargaming, modeling, painting, etc), and provides great stress relief...

If I can toss my humble opinion in here...wargamers are the best!

Talk about being able to just have fun, during *all* aspects of the hobby!  They love everything--the painting, the converting, the collecting, the backstories, the actual game....

The difference between wargaming and even other kinds of gaming is immense...at the store on a Saturday, we can have two or three tournies going at once, one 40K, one Magic, one Mage Knight...and the 40K players will be having a blast.  They're talking, making noises, grinning to beat the band...the Mage Knight players are usually having fun, although they tend to squabble more and the cheese factor is higher.  The Magic players, they have fun collecting and talking about the game, but when it comes down to actually playing the game, they're much quieter and more serious than wargamers...they're maybe still having fun, but *I* can't tell...

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that there is nothing cooler than a bunch of 40K players having a blast together.  The vibes are awesome, the players are usually just super.

It gives me something to think about when I'm bored, wheter its some unit combination, the next codex, or some overly bombastic piece of fluff that I'm planning to write but never get to.

It not only provides entertainment- feed the teacher this

just like boy prodigy said-math

it increases your ability to do huge amounts of muliplication and addition in my head in a matter of seconds- stuff I would've needed alotta paper and maybe a calculator to do before I got into it...

finess
the painting- it's self-rewarding and increases your... skill/dexterity and similar...

fun
selfexplanatory

creative
If you have any creativness in you this will help you develop it... writing (my specialty) drawing... etc.

and general thinking;
strategising, army list composing and such just help build your mental capacity, due to the fact that (unless you are a standard stereotyped SM or such...) they require extreme thinking.

It's also a highly social event which is good

ya that's abit...

Me. I like discussing tactics and fluff with my friends. I got a friend who's soon going to start collecting CWE. Can't Disagree with the Maths part, either. Also, it highers your IQ, I suppose.
