Title: Worthwhile Kickstarters
Post by: Rasmus on March 18, 2013, 07:50:27 AM
I thought I should bring up this topic, and if you have other kickstarters that you think are completely awesome then please feel free to post them in this thread to bring them to everyone's attention!

The one I looked initially was this

Littlest Lovecraft: The Call of Cthulhu by Tro Rex & Eyo Bella - Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/426473987/littlest-lovecraft-the-call-of-cthulhu)

So a fully illustrated children's book version of Call of Cthulhu.
I immediately pledged enough to get a signed copy the moment they are done (I even get my name in the thank you section!)

I'll mention the Veronica Mars Kickstarter because I think its a very important milestone in how we choose what TV gets made.

The Veronica Mars Movie Project by Rob Thomas - Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/559914737/the-veronica-mars-movie-project)

Basically for those that don't know, it a TV show from the mid to late 2000's that was cancelled after 3 seasons, it was much loved by the fans and cast and it was always said they would like to make a movie version.
The original creator got the cast to sign on and started a kickstarter to make the money needed to get the studio that owned the rights to sanction the project.

They needed $2 Million and had it pledged within 10 hours.

Now I've never seen Veronica Mars (wasn't big in the UK) but I am a fan of various shows that I'd like to see more of so I'm really pleased this is being so successful as it will hopefully open the door to other crowd funded TV/Movie projects to go ahead.
Crossing my fingures and saving some money for A Chuck Movie ;D

I threw some money at The Chronicles of Professor Elemental and Amanda Palmer projects which were completed and the aborted Beyond the Gates of Antares project which was not. I'll throw some cash at Littlest Lovecraft as it looks like fun.

Edit: Question for Rasmus - with your own independent endeavour, if repeated now days would you consider a Kickstarter type event?

For the re-launch of the game into its 16th version I am definitely considering a kickstarter, especially since most of it will be available for free once it is launched.

I've been going cfrazy with Kickstarter lately. I've been selling a bunch of bulk junk lately in the hopes of getting enough to invest intoArena Rex (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1596689756/arena-rex-gladiator-combat-in-a-mythic-age-0?ref=live); Roman gladiators!!!

Another game, Warriors of Darkmyre (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/929519929/warriors-of-darkmyre?ref=live); I'm interested in one model (the barbarian), but they don't have a good option to buy a single model.

I've discovered that Kickstarter is a great place to potentially find some quality models too: I've invested in the Judge Dread (how to you pass up the Judge for $5?!), Imbrian Arts Miniatures (very good sculpts, I wanted the Gnoll), as well as Bombshell Miniatures (I only got one model, but the kickstarter was so successful that they're giving out another free model). So yeah, all in all, I'm really excited by all the new games and projects that are coming out of that site.

How about supporting Cobra Commander (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1790899723/681612454?token=225b918b) as he tries to rebuild Cobra Island? is 21 million too much to ask for when the project is this important?

Tablescapes - by Secret Weapon Miniatures by Secret Weapon - Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1084069684/tablescapes-by-secret-weapon-miniatures)

Cheap alternative to Realm of Battle Boards, produced by Secret Weapon Miniatures.
Assuming some more of the stretch goals are met i think these tiles will explode onto the market, absolutely amazing stuff.

Dwarven Forge's Game Tiles: Revolutionary Miniature Terrain by Dwarven Forge - (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dwarvenforge/dwarven-forges-game-tiles-revolutionary-miniature)

This is running out and is the most awesome. I love it.

Also, I got my dedication to the Littlest Cthulhu-book settled. I wonder if you guys can spot it when you get yours. :)

Raging Heroes - The Toughest Girls of the Galaxy by Loud'n Raging - Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/loudnraging/raging-heroes-the-toughest-girls-of-the-galaxy)

28mm. They achieved their funding in less than a minute so the project is going ahead. Currently nearly 30x their initial goal with 26 days to go.

28mm wargaming sci-fi trenches and emplacements terrain by Chapterhouse Studios (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1877613212/28mm-wargaming-sci-fi-trenches-and-emplacements-te)

Chapterhouse has come out of their 'victory' with a new kickstarter. Non Imperial defensive terrain. So far they've shown designs for 'Space Egyptians' and 'Space Elves'. So, Necrons and Eldar. Some pretty solid designs, IMO.

Armikrog: Armikrog. by Pencil Test Studios, Inc. - Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1949537745/armikrog)

If you've played Neverhood then this is basically a new version, done by much of the same crew (Doug TenNapel, Terry S. Taylor preparing the music); they have 45 hours left to pledge 140k dollars more, so it's not looking too well, but I believe they can manage (and then the game is going to be awesome.)

Too bad no hordes...yet.  The limited release models are going to go Crazy too anything they do that is limited Ed turns to hold, I wanted to go with the Ed with 4 minis but I might have to go all 7... Even if I just sell the one, s I don't use.  Limited release + one of each model limit = $$$

Now I found this wonderful Kickstarter - you really should check it out, if nothing else than for the fantastic Rhino/Razorback variant that is being offered for almost £10 less than what GW wants you to pay. I am going backing this right now.

Brothers of Iron by curtis fell - Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/179741323/brothers-of-iron)

And then I found another one, and this one is tragically underfunded, and really needs attention, because this is really cute and useful.

Yes I know that might narrow the field somewhat, but still, fans are bound to be around, and they are crowdfunding their sequel RIGHT NOW!

I enjoyed the first one. Just not a fan of Indiegogo due to some issues in the past with projects that got funded but there wasn't really any accountability for where the money was actually spent. Hopefully that's changed.

Well that's the first kickstarter I've thrown money at. Does seem quite cool, pity the basic stamp wasn't 40mm so here's hoping he carries on and makes more of the 40mm stamps. 8)

As a side note I've always been a bit worried about kickstarters, watched a couple that have promised the backers a lot for stretch goals and then months past the deadlines still not delivered. This one seams pretty straight forward and upfront.  :)

Wrath of Kings by CoolMiniOrNot - Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coolminiornot/wrath-of-kings?ref=category) looks interesting you certainly get a good amount in the starter boxes given that they say model size per game is 10-50 and the starter boxes are currently sitting at 24-30

I like the idea of the bigger pad and being able to use it for larger bases or just use different areas for smaller bases... Will be interesting to see the rest of their range.

FABtotum Personal Fabricator | Indiegogo (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fabtotum-personal-fabricator/x/4393505)

Feeling vulnerable and exposed? Feel that your current defensive position just won't cut it? Well, I am sure we can find something to help you with that!
I found this Kickstarter for some awesome-looking defenses for your armies. I am getting a bunch of these as they are cheaper and better-looking that GW's Aegis defense line at least.

My first thought is that it is the same link that khaine posted as "they come at night". My other thought is that I really like the terrain modules that they have come up with. I'm also thinking that this seems a bit late to really capitalise on the AvP franchise.

Anybody thinking of backing that may want to hold off, there seems to be a lot of questions still floating around about the IP and Copyright issues with the Heroquest project. It l;looks to be more of a name grab than a licensed product and what may be legal in Spain may not hold up internationally.

Time will tell.  :)

It's a shame that it looks a bit of a shaky proposition, because it looks impressive.  It would be great for Heroquest to be revived, but I'm not so sure that they have all the necessary legal stuff in place to be able to achieve that which they say that they can.

I wondered how long it would take for that to happen.

I'm disappointed, but I'm not surprised.  There was a certain air of inevitability about it.

My only hope is that it might spur those who actually do hold the license to the game to put together a commemorative edition, as it would be so good to see this game come back.

Be very careful removing connectors from the terrain, make sure you push it out from the other end (a clear flight stand seems to work for me), not try to pull it out with your finger nails.
Also the inside of the holes need a bit of a file down, as the mould lines make it very difficult to get the connectors in/out.

Again not something I'd back but a piece of kit that could have some amazing possibilities when combined with a 3D printer...

Remember the movie Damnatus, that 40k-movie that was made and then GW refused the makers the rights to release? Well, they made a Lovecraft-movie after that, and now they are growing even more ambitious. I highly recommend you check it out, as this movie is bound to be absolutely epic.

There's a Kickstarter for the next Basius project on the regular, there will probably be another one after 2.5:

BASIUS 2.5 - The Tabletop Wargames Base Stamp System Returns by Wargames Bakery (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2023606288/basius-25-the-tabletop-wargames-base-stamp-system)

They sell molds for basing so you can cast your own rather than buy new bases every time.  I hear that some people hate them and I have no idea why, the finished molds look pretty sweet.

Look at the dust in this thread! Seems like Irisado is the only who cleans around here and that's mainly because most of us don't fit the cosplay maid uniform anymore.

ANYWHO.

Nerf Larp muskets and pistols. We *had* to go for the dual duelling pistols as important matters of honour are rather common when the Antipodeans gather.

Just sending out the news that Steepled Hat Studios released a 28mm Iron Age
Farmstead. There's only 11 days left on it and is currently on Kickstarter and
is looking for funding.

If you're interested in the Iron Age and need a farm or place for your 28mm
Britons, or perhaps want to invade the Britannia with your Romans, Steepled
Hat Studios has got you covered with this Farmstead. It includes three pieces
- a Granary, a Fence Set, and a Round House, all of which come fully painted
and battle ready. Or you can pledge on the raw resin forms as well.

Works well for Fantasy and other settings as well!

SHIPS WORLDWIDE

Check it out here:

Thank you and have an excellent day!
