Needing A Few Updates...
« on: June 22, 2007, 11:46:39 PM »
I've been away from the game for almost 2 years, during which time I've been really on and off about it, never taking it seriously although that didn't stop me from doing things like getting the latest Tau codex :P

I'm wondering about a few thing that I hope you guys could update me on:
1) Mecha Tau or Stationary Tau? Back when I was most active Mecha Tau were the "only" way to go (at least that was the consensus here), but I read oinky's sticky and thats a stationary Tau list. Now, I'm not saying I'm biased to either (well, maybe a little more to stationary :P) but its a little surprising to find a stationary Tau army doing well since all those I used to see just get butchered by their opponents. Although, admittedly there could always be variations in gaming skill and army building.

2) Piranhas, yay or nay? I was pretty excited to get a LSeq (Land Speeder equivalent :P) for the Tau, although to a certain extent they are softer targets than speeders. They are a little pricey but can spawn a squad of Gun Drones, which are pretty good IMO.

3) Vespids, yay or nay? I think I know this one......"too fragile" :P

4) How do people use Kroot nowadays? I'm guessing they are still mostly for counterattacks and whatnot, but considering how Hounds and Oxes are now "attachments" to the main unit, has that improved their playability, and whats the common number of hounds/oxes, if any? Or have the Kroot gone unfavored?

5) Skyray, yay or nay (as in, over Broadsides and Hammerheads)? Looks good. No qualms about the limited firepower since really a single-shot gun only gets a max of 6 shots per game, having the ability to dump them all rapidly is a bonus IMO. And I'm really loving that mobile ML :D

6) Ethereals had an improvement since the 3rd ed rules. Has this increased their frequency of being fielded?

7) Sniper Drones, yay or nay? I personally feel they are a tad expensive points-wise, and they do eat up that valuable HS slot we have, although thankfully we can take alot of them for a single slot.

So anyway, hoping to get some awesome replies on these questions.
Thanks!

What is life?
Think about it.
Lets say darkness is a lack of light.
Silence is a lack of sound.
Does that mean life is a lack of death?

1) Mecha Tau or Stationary Tau?

What ever you want. Who cares what other people think, it’s your army so do what you want. Mech is more popular though, or at least a mech bias.

2) Piranhas, yay or nay?

Can be good. It depends on how you use them and how many you take (single ones can get gunned down easy, a pair has a fair chance of doing damage). Their free VPless Drones can be useful.

3) Vespids, yay or nay?

Extremely specialised, expensive and yes, fragile. They are good at grabbing objectives on cover, finishing off MEQ units and, I think, engaging bikers. Cities of Death should make these guys much more effective.

Pillbox unit and counter assault mostly. Mostly pillbox, stick them in cover and make them as durable as Fire Warriors, and let them be charged so they strike first/simultaneously and do damage with their guns.

Don’t take Krootox, they are next to useless. Who wants a rapid fire missile pod when you can take a Deathrain?

5) Skyray, yay or nay (as in, over Broadsides and Hammerheads)?

If you can compensate for the lost anti-tank, yay. The only codex markerlights and the potential to strike up to 10 units in a single turn can get a useful psychological weapon. And since seekers are a sort of indirect weapon for the Sky Ray, it would usually draw less attention than a Hammerhead.

No idea how often he was fielded before, but he’s rarely included in lists.

7) Sniper Drones, yay or nay?

Like the Sky Ray, if you can compensate the loss of railguns, yay.
