Wood Elves Paint Scheme, any good?
« on: July 25, 2003, 03:51:32 PM »
Hey all. I've recently re-started my Wood Elf army and am now in the long and rewarding process of painting it. My army's theme is the Glade of Woe, and I thought it'd be really cool to paint them in a stand-out colour scheme. A lady where I play has an entire army painted in fall colours, expertly done complete with conversions and all. Granted I may never match her skill at the task, I still would like something unique. Right now my inteded scheme is actual night colours. Like "shadow" Wood Elves if you will. I was going to paint them in much darker hues of their normal colours, and replacing the bright colours of some models with darker ones. The overall look of the army would actually be quite intimidating I think, something I have yet to see done with the Wood Elves (not that it CAN'T be done!).  ;). Imagine my Treeman, with thick black bark highlighted dark brown in some areas, bloodied claws tearing at the enemy! Same goes for the Dryads. My archers and other missile troops will have dark green cloaks with black or dark brown highlights, and every pale flesh visible will be striped with some sort of camoflage to help hide in the shadows! I think mixing some much brighter elements into some models will contrast sharply and give the army an even greater look. Last I read the Glade of Woe was actually a beautiful place, except for that giant tree in the middle. I haven't read my 5th edition army book in ages... But anyway, how does that sound? Should I go with it or think of something else? Thanks for the input in advance.

Actually I at first considered doing a winter-theme... then slapped myself in the face after I'd realized what I said...  ;D

What is wrong with a winter scheme?

Granted, I don't play Wood Elves...

Sounds like a fun and creative paint scheme.

As with all dark paint schemes, you probably should be careful not to paint your army too dark.  This will ensure that your army doesn't look as if you just spray-painted it black.  Judicious and conservative use of layering up to a highlight will help you out significantly.  Less is more, but you at least need a little bit of highlighting.

Good luck!

Hmm sounds interesting but a bit too dirty for me.

Myself I usually use dark blues, its pretty good looking, when I finish painting them again (recently stripped them along with my DE) I'll post some up. Thinking of painting them sort of leatherish and remaking thier fluff to be more Sioux and Northern Cheyeanne related
I excrete awesome, and I don't care about your Homebrew rules.

Cool, I've never seen a blue colour scheme for WEs. I personally like to stick to traditional colours, and just change them to fit my fancy. But I'll keep in mind not to go too dark, I don't want my opponents thinking that those elves across the field are Druchii! And winter schemes might not be all that good because how would I paint the foliage and leaves on the elves if there are no leaves in winter? If I painted them dead then the mix of browns, whites and blacks wouldn't look too appealing, although maybe if they were done correctly...  ???

i think it can look very cool, just be careful with the camo-face paintings as they easily can look just plain dirty insted of voulontary made... elves are known to be dirty  :)
