[NM]500pts Ultramarines
« on: February 6, 2005, 05:12:30 PM »
Hi, I am new and haven't played a game yet, but here is my planned list.  I was looking for something balanced, and able to cope with medium armour and troops.

HQ- 79 pts
»Captain
»»Bolt Pistol
»»Power Weapon
»»Krak Grenades
»»Frag Grenades

Troops (x2)- 210
»10 Marines
»»1 Sargeant with Bolt Pistol and CCW
»»1 Meltagun
»»Mounted in a Rhino

Thnx!

It looks okay for a 500 point force.  I've got two suggestions;

1) Swap the Captian's Krak grenades for Melta Bombs.  You've got the spare points and Melta Bombs are much more effective.

2) Swap the Meltaguns for Plasmaguns.  Plasma's are much better at this points range - longer range, more shots at 12" and still able to punch through medium armour.

I think that list looks like it could handle most things thrown your way. If it were me i would keep the meltas because they never glance and can bust tanks really well. i would give you cap melta bombs so he can also take down those tanks. Other than that it looks like a pretty good list.
At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the wolf time.

I messed the points.  Three more for the captain, I forgot to add the grenade points, so I can't take meltas.

The only option pretty much for right now is Meltagun vs. Plasmagun.

To me, both your rhinos look full. So my question is, who does your master ride with? or does he footslog it.

Unless of course, the sargeant is already included in the 9 marines.

Think about getting a plasma pistol for your sergent.
You could get the points by dropping a marine.
Or you may want to drop one of the Rhinos so your Captain can be in that squad.

Doesn't matter even if it was 9 marines, because it'd have to be a command squad (ie HQ choice) for him to ride in the rhino, right?

What I can remember (no codex or rule infront of me), he doesnt need a command squad and he can join other squads if hes an independent character.

Basically, the BBB says an IC can only ever join or leave a unit during the movement phase UNLESS detailed differently in the codex by the option of the retinue.

So, I say the ol' cap CAN'T join a troops choice before battle.  Help?

Pretty good list, I've had success w/both plasma and metla. Since many marines players dont field melta, keep it.

Something you might consider, drop a a marine will give you a hunter killer missle on your rhino. Not really a great trade, as it can only be fired once..but unlimited range (? i think..) krak missle eqiuv, can take something down, or def. wound.

I'm still not 100% sure about jump packs on characters..I dont think you can do it..

The Chaplain can join the Rhino squad at the beginning of the movement phase and so can be given a ride. Generally, each Sergeant of your Rhino squads should have terminator honours, power fist and bolt pistol. But this may not be necessary in 500 pt games.

Skyline: The hunter killer missile is generally not worth it, and an IC can, of course, get jump packs as he has access to the armoury.

Ok, how bout this now?

HQ- (x1)- 99 pts.
Captain
»Power Weapon
»Bolt Pistol
»Jump Pack
»Frag Grenades
»Krak Grenades

Troops- (x2)- 200 pts. each
Razorback (w/ heavy bolter)
6 Marines
»Meltagun
»Sergeant
»»Bolt Pistol
»»Terminator Honours
»»Power Fist

Oh, and btw, why does the codex refer to the bolter as a "boltgun" in the stats list but nowhere else?

Boltgun is the "official" name. Bolter is the slang. that's all. Your new list looks good.
I will say that yer HQ will be targeted and singled out. He is a threat. The transports
are alwyas going to come in handy. the meltas kick butt. Hmm, this list looks damn
good. Stick with it until you expand yer army.

I just found this jewel forum Bolter and Chainsword, based on SMurfs...so I have ALOT of reading to do, and they seem to know and care alot about marines...They seem to view the rhino and razorback as poor, and pick plasmaguns over meltas...so I'll read up on some tactica and update this list, maybe.

Just read on in B&C... Smaller games require numbers. For this, I suggest the following list:

2x Marines squad
9 w/ plasma gun, bolter(x8)
Vet Sergeant w/ power fist, bolt pistol
380 pts

Captain w/ power weapon, bolt pistol, frags
77 pts

Landspeeder
50 pts

Total: 507 pts.

Hmmm...that's the vibe I'm getting...So I guess I'll pick it up and run with it.

Also, why do people regularly post 507pts for a 500pt game, or 1003 pts for a 1000 game, etc?  Are you allowed to go over a little?

What I've heard from a cell manager at my local GW is that you can go over a point limit by a number of points
equal to yer cheapest model. Also, most folks typically don't mind if you go a few points over the limit. The only
time this becomes a problem is in Tournaments where this is unusually not permitted.
Personally, I try to go under the points limit. I feel this is more fair. Besides which I can hold over my opponent's
head when I beat them.

The above list provides a mobile army. Let the Captain join one unit and move both units towards the enemy. Then rapid fire (12'') and charge in the next turn. If you play against a horde army then you want to stand back and shoot first.

In terms of the 500 + 7 pts list, it's the player's preference what to drop. On the other hand, in friendly games if you are a bit over the limit (say, +10 pts) then - at least in our gaming club - nobody would object.
