[5th] Flip Belts = Plasma Grenades?
« on: July 24, 2008, 02:11:32 AM »
Hello all,

Read the 5th ed rules for assaulting into cover.  Specifically, read what must happen in order for a unit to strike at I1.

Now read the 'Flip Belts' rule.

If harlequins are accompanied by a Shadowseer, it's a moot point.  But if they are NOT, then it seems they will strike in initiative order anyway.  I'm hoping I'm wrong here; someone tell me why.

Instead of tallying my wins and losses and posting them here, I instead took the total W/L/D's from all of the 40KO signatures in existence and put them here.  Enjoy!

Nope, not wrong. Good catch.

Also applies to Eldar Pathfinders. Not that they will use this ability very often as they are hardly beasts in assault but it is certainly a point worth adding to Gutstikk's compilation of unconventional tactics.

The farseers of the Eldar are rich in lore and know all the ways of skinning cats. Do not ask which way is best lest the knowledge burn your soul.

That is pretty damn awesome. I'm loving all these little quirks that are being found gradually.
Any other units in the game that never have to take terrain tests?

As an aside; Anything with slow & purposeful always takes difficult terrain tests when assaulting so they'll attack at I1...

Necron scarab swarms are one.

Though they strike last against anyone but other necrons and Tau anyway...

Bikes!!! It just came to me; bikes are never slowed by difficult terrain and need never take difficult terrain tests.

So they will be attacking at initiative value when assaulting units in cover.

Yay for Shining Spears...

Can I get a page reference for this wonderous discovery, please?

Page 53 "Bikes" under 'movement' and 'assault'.
That rule is the same as in 4th ed.

Page 36 "assaulting through cover": "If an assaulting unit had to take a difficult or dangerous terrain test during their assault move, all of it's models have their initiative lowered to 1 when attacking..."

Ha! ok, forget it. As I wrote that I noticed it said Dangerous terrain tests as well.
And bikes have to take those.

So Harlies are cool and get the bonus, bikes don't. Ah well.

I'll have to double check the dangerous terrain part, but off the top of my head, necron wraiths would likely qualify.

And it also means that high Initiative models can attack enemies in cover and still strike first.
Regarding the Harlequins: they have I7 when charging (Ouch) How many I6 enemies are there?   ;)

A change I like very much; a models Initiative value is all of a sudden very important!!

It takes away the need for a Falcon mounted squad to invest valuable points in a Shadowseer. With a full Flying Circus that's a load of pts saved.... ::)

Gameplay wise, it is less grievous for the Harlequin unit if the Shadowseer is taken out due to wound allocation, be it in CC or via shooting.
