Long time since I posted here. Last time was all about a marsh themed Bloodbowl pitch
In the meantime I finished that project and started and finished an undead/graveyard themed field
(https://scontent-ams2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/11228904_695393917250424_612067322021670921_n.jpg?oh=21d771084c1ffa072f9a25624ee1f472&oe=560CF938)

I won't linger too long on that one as the next project is already halfway finished. A sewer/Skaven themed Bloodbowl pitch
Starting out by raised walkways and lowered areas that wil be filled with acrylic water
(https://scontent-ams2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/t31.0-8/11393318_698188996970916_4006106091571302675_o.jpg)
Then I had to structure the walls. Carve the bricks, then paint

And this is how the project stands at the moment

The undead themed field looks fantastic. I've never been a great fan of Bloodbowl, but I'd definitely like to play a few games on that board. The Skaven pitch in progress is looking very promising too. I look forward to seeing how it looks when it is complete.
-
Indeed. Magnificent work. I've been playing BloodBowl II on the computer recently, with the AI cheating like a complete bastard. Love the terrain.
-
Small' ish update.
I am nearly done with the main building and painting process. Just putting everything together and filling gaps
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/11260600_765816816874800_4839275682937953478_n.jpg?oh=a8c8eca10e558fcb2b6558005bb065da&oe=56B61D8B&__gda__=1455727824_9f86b28917f1e1298c21c1dcf36790cc)
Quickly build some grates to cover the "dugouts" later on, after I cast all the acrylic water masses
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/12189682_765816673541481_8432915286774838577_n.jpg?oh=b762f188080fce0cfc1aac13d43fe5a3&oe=56BE4855&__gda__=1451800284_05b13d6914e03e4c0a5bfa9f9c90e940)
Sticks to position the wall sections
(https://scontent-ams3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xta1/v/t1.0-9/12189600_765816730208142_1440328700026028418_n.jpg?oh=04621818849ea629892e128f2bec9e90&oe=56BD7F5E)
Then add some instant plaster
(https://scontent-ams3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/12191429_765816696874812_3900811346268814371_n.jpg?oh=cf082a1e0d05a023ae52abe6930bc37d&oe=56C3106A)
Some serious gap-filling to do at this stage
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/12189682_765816673541481_8432915286774838577_n.jpg?oh=b762f188080fce0cfc1aac13d43fe5a3&oe=56BE4855&__gda__=1451800284_05b13d6914e03e4c0a5bfa9f9c90e940)
And when the plaster dried up I can add the wooden panelling around the board, paint up the filler and start working on details
-
This is looking so good. There's such an atmospheric feel to those gaming fields. This is one of the most impressive gaming surface/board projects I've ever come across.
-
Then I had to structure the walls. Carve the bricks, then paint
Hi Solitaire, this looks spectacular, it's amazing how you can turn some wood and paint into such a detailed looking sewer.
What do you mean by carved?
-
With pink foam I prefer to draw the bricks on there with a ballpoint, then use a scalpel to make a shallow cut, following the outlines of the bricks I drew on with the ballpoint.
The next step is then to use a sculpting tool to shape each brick individually, pressing some of the foam somewhat deeper and leaving some lines shallower to create the look of old, not entirely perfect, masonry.
-
That is incredible does the process take as long as it sounds? Are the floor tiles done in the same way?
-
It takes quite a while to get a wall done. The floor tiles are done in the same fashion.
I needed 4-5 hours to finish the large floor tiles and cracks. My girlfriend spent most of a week working on the walls and the cobblestones surrounding the main playing surface.
At the moment I'm working on a wooden border around the field for added stability
-
It beggars belief that what I am looking at is essentially carved lines in pink foam. Your painting skills and your attention to detail is truly amazing.
Don't know if it is just me but I can't see the first three photo's in your post.
-
I will try to host the photos somewhere else next time. I noticed that all of the photos in the first post are invisible to me. Hosting on facebook does not seem to work that well for the forum software used here.
Here is the link to the facebook album where more photos are posted:

The photos in the first post display for me. That said, a photo hosting service, such as Photobucket or Flickr, usually works very well with SMF.
-
Thanks for the links Solitaire but I haven't got a Facebook account so I can't sign in to see your albums.
-
I'll upload new photos on Flickr then. Have an account there anyways :)
There is not much to post at the moment. I'm painting rusty grates which is quite a time intensive job
Step 1: Paint metallic
Step 2: use a sponge to stipple on Vermin Brown
Step 3: same as step 2 but with Blazing Orange
Step 4: Thinned down Sepia ink
Step 5: Stipple on a very small amount of blue ink using a sponge or rough pig hair brush
Step 6: Stipple on PVA glue (using a small brush and only sporadically)
Step 7: apply MIG standard rust pigment on the PVA glue
Step 8: Stipple some more metallic paint on the edges to accentuate them (only when you want lighter rust. For heavy rust skip this last step)
-
Can't wait to see your rust pictures as I think a realistic rust effect is hard to achieve and I really like looking at people's attempts at getting it right. I personally think that rust doesn't scale very well.

This is what the field currently looks like. I still need to highlight the cracks in the center portion of the field, but I wanted to get the rust and moss stuff done fist.

My girlfriend is not satisfied with how the rusty grates look on the photos above.
She wants more pockmarked and heavy rust.
That means that I have to add a few steps to the rust tutorial above
Step 1: Paint metallic
Step 2: use a sponge to stipple on Vermin Brown
Step 3: same as step 2 but with Blazing Orange
Step 4: Thinned down Sepia ink
Step 5: Stipple on a small amount of blue ink using a rough pig hair brush. Repeat if more blue is desired
Step 6: Stipple on PVA glue (using a small brush and only sporadically)
Step 7: glue on fine sand
Step 8: use watered down dark brown to color the sand
Step 9: use a sponge to stipple on metallic paint
Step 10: Stipple on PVA glue (using a small brush and only sporadically)
Step 11: apply MIG standard rust pigment on the PVA glue
Step 12: Stipple some more metallic paint on the edges to accentuate them, as well as on the areas containing the sand, but just enough to color the raised tops of the sand grains.

These photo's are much better as I like the way they allow me to zoom in.
I agree with your girlfriend. Hopefully without sounding to critical of what is really outstanding work I thought your rust was too monotone. I would like to see the grate painted with the same dark coloured rust that is evident on the inside of the circular item in the second photo. Also maybe it is just the photo's but the rust colour looks too much like the colour of what I think is blood on the floor.
-
I'm glad it works, and no, not too critical at all. I prefer hearing honest feedback. At this stage I can still change and add almost anything, and some ideas I had earlier on in the build have already changed and changes will be made to what I have now.
The rust is just one example. I worked on the rust a bit today. Not quite satisfied yet, but I'm getting closer.
The colored patches on the floor are not blood. I try to stay away from the cliche puddles-of-blood-on-a-bloodbowl-field. I spilled some of the rust pigment and decided to play around with the patches of color a bit. Will thin them down some before pouring the acrylic water
-

I suppose I was hoping that it was blood really. Being a sewer the mind boggles as to what else could cause a reddish brown stain. :o

Random pieces of metal lying around and corroding away could for instance. Adding these tell-tale pieces of metal will be on my "to do" list next :)

That is so much better than what I was thinking :D. Do you get much time to play Bloodbowl?
-
Not nearly as much time as I would like, but I live close to Dusseldorf where the annual Dungeonbowl takes place, and I can play the occasional game against my girlfriend. She prefersplaying Necromantic. I like to play any of the other teams I own.
At the moment that's somewhat limited to:
chaos
dwarves
pro elfs
goblins
halflings
high elf
humans
lizardmen
necromantic
nurgle
ogre
orcs
skaven
underworld

Thank you. I was thinking about that as well. How much do I need markings.
I tried the wire and it does not work.
I will try a trail of small rocks/brick debris to see if that works.
I personally would not need the additional markings, but I'm still trying to include them in a way that does not disrupt the overall appearance.
Here are some higher quality photographs showing, in more detail, how the rusty grates turned out.

I started pouring in the acrylic water mass. It's a slow process but the results are looking promising so far
-
The grates and sewers look really good in my opinion. The rust is just right :). All in all, it's a really atmospheric gaming board, which could also be used for dungeon based boardgames like Advanced Heroquest.
-

? You talking to yourself Solitaire? I guess you are talking about re-roll/score/dead player markings. Personally I don't think a board of ths style needs that kind of addition.
Now that you have added different colours and crustiness to the rust on the grates they look brilliant.
Not sure what you did to the stains on the floor but they don't look as obvious now and look a lot better.

Talking to myself is part of the creative process ;)
Thank you reg. the rust. I tried hard to make it look good. My girlfriend had serious doubts at the moment everything looked a deep blue
I did not change anything in the stains, but my cellphone exaggerates the reds in a picture more then my Nikon D3
-
Not much news to report here. I'm in the process of making a high res image of the board for printing purposes. I wanted to do that before I pour the resin mass and possibly mess up everything
-
Well none news is better than no news :) Why is it that you need high resolution photos? Are you printing very large photos?
-
I was contacted by the organizer of a BB tournament who wants to use this design for their tournament. 15 boards will be printed. In order to print them, the company that takes care of the printing asked for high res images. I can deliver a 150Mp image, which is most likely a bit more then they need, but scaling down is easier then scaling up ;)
I will post some new progress pics soon though
-
So is that 3D printing you are talking about or gaming mats? As it is for a tournament will you now have to add pitch markings?
-
It will be gaming mats at this stage. I will add the required markings in Photoshop and make them look good so no-one will notice they were not painted on.
To my shame I must admit that I'm already planning a new gaming board
-
Nothing to be ashamed about there Solitaire. I wish I had half the drive that you seem to have when it comes to modelling.
I have never played BB so I am wondering whether or not the bridge and water that you have included in the pitch will have any effect in a game
-
As long as I don't come up with some house rules, there is no "in game" effects to worry about. Including house rules could be fun, but I think playing the field as a regular field will work best.
I just worked on the "markings" for the touchdown zones and went with a collection of debris and rocks spread along the distance along with some sand and moss trails. So far that seem sto work out ok (need some detail work to make things look good enough) and I will post pictures of this progress as soon as I have some light to make pictures in. My cellphone just could not take a picture in the dark, and I left my camera tripod in the car.
Pictures => Tomorrow :)
PS: I wouldn't call that "drive"... more like cruise or crawl. I'm also in the process of painting up some BloodBowl dwarves. Same thing there, pictures => Tomorrow due to lack of available light
-

I notice that the list of teams that you own already includes Dwarves so are you repainting some of your models or adding to a team?
Do you live in perpetual darkness in Germany?
-
Lol. No perpetual darkness. Could not paint much in darkness. But at 4 in the afternoon, which is about the time I get home from work, sunlight is all but gone these days.

That is progress as it stands.
I did own the 3rd edition Bloodbowl dwarves but liked the 2nd edition dwarves better, so I picked up a team of 2nd edition dwarves, stripped the 3rd edition dwarves and intend to sell them when I find the time.
I did the same with my human team. Replaced the 3rd edition ones with a 2nd edition team. My Ogre team was 2nd edition to start with. So far the only team I have multiples of is Skaven.
-
That is progress as it stands.
Outstanding. It is amazing how realistic your work looks. Your attention to detail really lifts this terrain to another level.
-
We have a little progress to show
One, my girlfriend provided THE idea for the typography on the score counters. Something I could not figure out at the time.
I also built the turn counters
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1491/24736576725_95a315ba8a_b.jpg)
Turn counters need to dry and then need some paint
The board as it sits there with score and turn counters
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1565/24710354186_3d26603274_b.jpg)
And some details
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1705/24710362676_ab76765c2d_b.jpg)
(I hid 3 rats in the field, but they also still require paint)
Next up, I need to place those logs in the ground and hang some lengths of chain between them to seperate the dugouts
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1717/24109702463_16a5723d5f_b.jpg)
In anticipation of J-Bones Slann team we also started on a Slann themed pitch. Still a very early WIP
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1666/24368881819_903906dc7d_b.jpg)
-
The level of detail on that board is outstanding. The turn counters are a really nice addition too. This all looks great :).
-
Your attention to detail really lifts this terrain to another level.
I also built the turn counters
See Solitaire this is what I like about your work. I really like how you have managed to make your turn counter into something that looks like it belongs in a sewage works. I guess this was your intention but your counter has the look of an aeration pond. If you had built it so that it was closer to the surface of the pond it would have been even better.
-
This is some phenomenal work.

I never really did any research on sewage works but I did work in a chemical company once and they did have installations similar to what I built for the turn counters. I figured they would not look completely out of place here, but it is excellent news to hear I was so close to something that really fits in a real life sewer :D
With the turn counters I really focused on ergonimics rather then realism I'm afraid.
I look forward to filling those ponds, which can be done as soon as the modelling putty cured and the things got some paint on them
-
I ordered a bunch of manhole covers to create re-roll tokens. Have also found and ordered suitable chain to continue work on the dugouts, but today we started pouring the water.
The first layer is in now. I leave a week between layers to make sure each layer cures and hardens completely. Each layer is 1mm deep. That kind of obliterates the original plan and timeframe, but I should have plenty of time to finish the project before the underground cup kicks off.

Superb work once more :). The level of detail on this board is so good. It's almost a shame to put figures on it in some respects :D. It's going to be incredible to play games of Bloodbowl on that. In addition, it would also make for a quest level room in a game of Advanced Heroquest, so it's dual purpose in that respect.
-
The first layer is in now. I leave a week between layers to make sure each layer cures and hardens completely. Each layer is 1mm deep.
Wow your project looked good before but the addition of the "water" has taken it to another level.
How come you are leaving so long between layers? I thought it was best to layer resin when each layer was slightly sticky otherwise don't you end up with visible lines between the layers?
-
Thank you for bringing that to my attention. In that case I'll raise the water level by 1 more mm today
-
Oh right, wasn't expecting that as an answer. Have you not cast resin before? What type of resin are you using? How come you are only pouring 1.00mm at a time? I am fairly sure you can pour 15.00mm layers of acrylic or polyester resins without issue. If I remember correctly the thicker the layer the more heat that is produced though so maybe 1.00mm is safer in your case as I wouldn't want your paint to be ruined..
-
Your work is simply stunning Solitaire. I can't wait to see the final product with a game in progress. Just amazing, well done!
-
Alienscar, the product I'm using is a high gloss resin based clear coat. I am not sure how it will behave if I cast 15mm of it all at once, but my biggest fear is that it would not cure completely, or that it would crimp so much during curing that it ends up looking like a clear high gloss version of a dried riverbed.
I could have gone for one of the more commonly used products used to cast qater on terrain features, but I needed so much of it that the price became prohibitive.
From what I can see however things look good and I can continue casting a new layer every 3 days.

Still waiting for other materials to arrive so I can continue work on the rest of the board. Also, after casting 3 layers of resin I think I'll leave things as they are. Everyting went fine so far, but the resin has a sligtly brownish cast to it and I don't want it to go too dark. Will show pictures as soon as the 3rd layer dried up some more and is at least stable enough to keep it's shape

That's a shame. Hope it isn't too brown but a slightly brackish colour is probably more realistic for a sewer than crystal clear water don't you think?
-
Not too brown. Actually, the coloration does add to the overall appearance at this stage. I do hope the surface ends up being completely smooth this time, so I can let things cure and take pictures to show that everything turned out looking just as planned, but then a bit different (in a good way)

I just spent some 20 minutes going through your posting history, it was a great pleasure!
You seem to have both talent and patience for the artwork <3

Thank you very much. My posting history goes quite a way back, and in the 14 years that I have been posting here I learned a lot. Most of the techniques I learned by reading what others did, so hearing that my stuff now inspires others is a great motivation for me to start new projects, finish existing ones and try to learn more techniques that I can incorporate in my next few projects

Hey Solitaire surely that resin has cured by now! How's it all looking?
-
Yes, the resin cured so far. I will need to add another one or two layers, but I have to wait until the temperatures rise a bit because it's still freezing at night.
In the meanwhile I am painting my bloodbowl teams. 4 at a time

I never knew that there was a Dwarven Deathroller ever made. That thing looks very comical and entertaining.
All of the teams are superbly painted, but it is the Dwarf team that that catches my eye the most. I've never been a fan of Dwarves at all, but there's something about the way you've painted them that seem so apt.
-
There were Deathrollers in 2nd, 3rd and 5th edition Bloodbowl, each with their own miniature. I used most of the 3rd edition Deathroller but added the engine from an Empire Steam tank and the wheels. Also added a little bell salvaged from a chocolate bunny and a pint from a Dwarf regiment sprue :)
I do not really like Dwarves either, but I got a good deal on these 2nd edition miniatures and had fun painting them. Personally it's the Human team I have high hopes of.
In a few weeks I will add a Slann team for my girlfriend to th epainting queue
One team I would still like to build is a team of 70's glam rock stars which I would like to play as Norse. I already have Eddie from Iron Maiden on the way who will then serve as Yeti (35mm tall miniature)
So next up in that trend would be to build Gene Simmons as Ulfwerener, Paul Stanley and Ace Frehey as Berserkers, 2 Roadies as runners Bruce Dickinson, Dave Murray, Steve Harris, Nicko McBrain and Adrian Smith as Linemen

I agree the images do look a bit flat but other than that I really like the look of them. I particularly like your Orks & Goblins. The more that you post in this thread the more I realise I know nothing at all about Blood Bowl. I always thought that the teams were based on Warhammer armies so I was surprised by your mention of Norse.
-
I just increased contrast on the images above a bit so they look more like their real counterparts. That's what you get when you process photos early in the morning.
The Bloodbowl teams by and large correspond to Warhammer counterparts.
There are 24 official Bloodbowl teams by now, and then some experimental teams that can be played with your opponents conscent.
Amazons
Chaos (classic roster consisting of Warriors, Beastmen and a Minotaur as big guy)
Chaos Dwarves (haven't seen them in WHFB after 4th edition)
Chaos Pact (mainly a Marauder team)
Dark Elves
Dwarves
Elves
Goblins (have their own team in Bloodbowl although you can take Goblins in an Ork team as well)
Halflings (also gone from WHFB AFAIK)
High Elves
Humans
Khemri
Lizardmen
Necromantic (Undead with a flavor)
Norse (Norsca were a Warhammer army at some point as well, not to be mistaken with Kislev)
Nurgle (Chaos in yet another flavor)
Ogres (have their own team, however they do not team up with Gnoblars but with Snotlings)
Orks
Skaven
Slann (Apart from the Slann mage priest no current WHFB army for them either)
Undead (Vanilla Undead pretty much based on Vampire Counts fluff)
Underworld (an unholy alliance between Goblins and Skaven)
Vampires
Wood Elves
And then there are some experimental teams
Bretonia
Khorne Deamons
All of these were represented in WHFB at some point. It's just that Games Workshop is very good at ignoring complete miniature ranges they once produced because they do not release rules for them in a current version of their mainstay games. (Same goes for WH40k btw. Demiurg, Squats, Jokaero just to name a few)
With the Norse I would have 15 of the teams listed above. Still a lot of painting to do :-\
-

24 teams! Is that just to allow people to use their favourite armies or does each army bring something different to the game?
Now that you have adjusted the contrast I like the look of your Orks even more now.
-
Each team brings a different team structure as well as players with different base skills and different abilities to develop additional skills.
Some teams can have 2 blitzer type players (generally tougher, better armoured players with skills that help them stop opposing players) whereas some teams can have 4. Some teams have more catchers. Ball handling types. And other teams have more blockers. Teams like Halflings or Goblins have lots of small players that can easily dodge through opponents defenses, but get hurt badly when blocked. 24 teams really means 24 different styles of playing the game, either in a single game or in a league where teams develop and grow.
Now here is a player that needs some house rules because there are only rules for a Giant referee, and even those are not official
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1693/26088435651_3da8013905_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/FKm41F)DSC_5917 (https://flic.kr/p/FKm41F) by b j (https://www.flickr.com/photos/132836932@N03/), on Flickr
My human team is finished. The Giant is more of a fun addition, but if I can come up with some house rules I might even field him in a game
The sewer pitch is almost finished. Well, not quite. I still need to add chain fences and some signs, and I need to dullcoat a lot of surface area

This project continues to impress me no end. The sewer pitch is fantastic and the giant is a really nice touch to the Human team. It would be great to see the giant go toe-to-toe with an ogre in an Orc team.
-
When you mention Ogres, you mean the small ones right? ;)
In Bloodbowl Ogres are Strength 5 players (a Human is a Strength 3 player, Halfling St2, Chaos Warrior ST 4 so not all that different from WHFB)
Humans can field an Ogre player. When you look in the back row of that group picture, you will see (from left to right)
The Giant, Conan the bloodbowlian (a model sculpted by Rykar Jove and produced in a limited quantity of 12 pieces) which I use as Thrud, the barbarian (a ST 6 player) and next to him, you'll see someone with a turquose mohawk. That's a 1st edition Bloodbowl Ogre :) Doesn't he look tiny compared to that Giant?
My Ogre team consists of 2nd edition Bloodbowl Ogre models. Not painted yet, but I can make a size comparison shot and add a 5th edition Bloodbowl Ogre as well. The 5th edition Ogre is the one enlisted in my Ork team
-
I was thinking of Morg n'Thorg, but having just checked his picture online, I realised that I had completely misremembered how tall he is :D. As a result, my comparison is flawed.
I missed the ogres behind the humans. They certainly are dwarfed by the giant. I'm guessing that the best way for other teams to handle the giant is to try to use superior mobility to get around it?
-
Ganging up against that Giant would work, unless Halflings or Goblins would try that of course ;)
A Dwarven Deathroller with 2 Dwarves to assist would be able to take on that Giant, but ignoring him and running would work as well.
I am not certain on house rules. Galak Starscraper is the only Giant with a set of rules in Bloodbowl and he's a referee, so I will have to figure out something balanced. I know I did that a few years ago but I lost those notes ??? ::)
Here are some fun photos of work on the Giant.
First, size comparison with a regular human

The sewer pitch project is slowly coming to an end. Most of the construction work is done. I need to finish the enclosing, then paint that and put some clearcoat on it.
I also still have some re-roll markers to build, but when that's done I'm pretty much finished here.

It looks great with the team standing mid pitch. It's going to make a fantastic arena for any match.
I also keep envisaging it being used as a lair in a dungeon for Advanced Heroquest. It would make a great quest room for a Skaven oriented mission.

If I would play advanced heroquest (I have so far only played the original Heroquest) I think I would recreate a complete modular dungeon, but the sewer pitch would indeed fit well in such a setting.
The fun in such a Heroquest dungeon project would be to recreate hallways, staircases, halls, narrow passageways, hidden passages etc. I could imagine that along with lots of torches mounted on the walls with OSL style painting. Too many ideas for such a project already, and I have not even thought about it really or taken up a pencil to make sketches :o
The most dangerous bit of such thoughts is that I would need deep pockets for such a project, and have to spend long hours searching ebay for all the oldhammer miniatures I would need to fill those dungeons

The sewer pitch project is slowly coming to an end. Most of the construction work is done. I need to finish the enclosing, then paint that and put some clearcoat on it.
I also still have some re-roll markers to build, but when that's done I'm pretty much finished here.
I never really appreciated the scale of this pitch until now. Now that you have included the models the amount of work that you have put into this structure is even more apparent.
In some way it is a real shame that this project is coming to an end. I have really enjoyed watching this Blood Bowl pitch take shape and I have learned about Norse and Deathroller's along the way.
The finished product is sublime.

Thank you :D
a few more details need to be added, but when this is finished I'll have everything ready for the next two pitches
For now, Goblins, just finished

They look fabulous :). I particularly love the troll, who looks suitably imposing.
