This is something that i have been thinking about for a while now.  It all started with this prototype

And is growing slowly out to be a full blown army.  I am strickly using cadians and zombies, and trying to maximize the number of models i can get out of 2 boxes, which is about 38-42.

The premise behind the army is that these soldiers were so fanatical about serving the imperium that they won't even let death end their servitude.  So I don't want to make this a nurgle faction of guard.  And I am maintaining all they symbology. But the soldiers will look like zombies that have seen their fair share of losing fights, but refuse to stay down.  I also have some fluff in the works for them, but I am not comfortable posting it yet.  My writing skills are sub-par.

Of course this is a work in progress and I plan to update as I manage to get hold of my GF camera to take pics with.  This will document my work from creation up until painting.

This is my planned army 1500pts (subject to change)
Command Squad
-Junior Officer w/Power Weapon, honorificus, krak grenades, and Refractor Field
-Veteran w/Standard and krak grenades
-Lascannon Team

Support Squads
-Anti Tank Lascannon Teams
-2x Mortar Teams
-Cadian Sentinel w/ Improved Comms

Infantry Platoon 1
-Command Squad w/ Lascannon
-2x Infantry Squads w/Heavy Bolter

Infantry Platoon 2
-Command Squad w/ Lascannon
-2x Infantry Squads w/ Heavy Bolter

2x Cadian Pattern Sentinels

Hellhound

2x Leman Russ w/Lascannon

Basilisk

Progress: 39%
60/64 Assembled
14/64 Painted
0/60 Based
Time Spent: 42 Hours

So this is where I will display My works in progress.  As I complete them I will reply with a post dedicated to each completion and then add the final work to the OP.

Leman Russ 1

I am still not sure if these tanks have enough battle damage for the look I am going for.  But I don't wanna completely wreck the tank.  I want a worn out look, but still functional

Leman Russ 2

Basilisk

I am fairly proud of the crew i managed to scrap together from left overs.  The shell for the gun looks a little odd cause it was a hunter kill missile originally.  But I think it still works.

Interesting project.

I guess I will keep an eye on it. I just love themed armies.  ;D

Perhaps you can draw some inspiration from this project.

That is actually what got me started on this.  Unfortunately I am not nearly as skilled as that guy.  On top of it all I am trying to do this on a budget as well.

No problem.

Everybody starts small, right?

Just go on an practice a bit and set your aim for a combat patrol team.

It will look nice and unique.

Newest addition.  The following are squads 1-4 for the platoons.  About half of them are prototypes, so some of them didn't come out as well as i wanted them to.  However, I did manage to stretch 1 box of zombies across all of them.  If I want high quality zombie guard it looks like I can get 35 out of the combination of a guard box and zombie box.  So it is a little bit more expensive than I was hoping.

That is actually the biggest deal for me.  I am already priming the tanks, and have a general scheme in mind.  But I am considering dipping the army.  I think I will test on a few troopers first.  The biggest concern I have is that it will make all the colors just too dark.

I am not the best painter, and I wanna get this army painted decently and fast.  Was thinking of using some foundation paints, doing a little highlighting for gore, then dipping.  Will post the results of a couple of dips before I go full out with it.  It is a method of painting I really wanna learn, since my time on painting is very limited.

Love the idea of the "We Serve in Death" Zombie Army, but "only in death, does duty end." I guess that means the Emperor has requested for the creation of zombies for the Inquisition. Looking forward to seeing your boys painted.

I think some of your troopers need to be a bit more battle damaged than that. I'm picture half a trooper lugging a lasgun or for much more hilarity, a trooper whose special weapon malfunctioned ala plasma gunner whose half burned away or a flamer. Also I think the tanks could do with a bit more battle damage in the form of armor plates missing. Great work so far.

Wow, your army is growing fast. :o

Do you already have an idea for the paint scheme? Just tell us what we may expect.

Paint scheme will be pretty basic.  Green for the armor with some highlighting, and some off shade for the skin.  So it looks unnatural.  And then tons of gore everywhere.  I already have squads 1-4 primed, just need to wait before I can start base coating them.

Sounds good.

Basic usually means easy painting - meaning you will be able to paint a lot of minis without getting bored. Not getting bored means you won't do sloppy work.

i really like your guard. i think you should make up a few priests fot them. just adds to that "we serve in death" theme. similer to liche priests for the tomb kings, on that idea this could also be a curse set on you regiment for doing somthing wrong.

Just a idea

That is a great idea!  I have been really brainstorming on what to do for my command, and that is perfect.  Although they won't actually be priests "priests" but having the command squad be full of liches makes so much sense!  Thanks for the great idea!

hehe, thanks.

You might also want to add a normal priest or commisar (not a zombie) to keep the armys fighting.

that cool bones army you keep seeing in firebase is just so uber cool lol.
and the I hate imperium armies, but I love this one even more than my own DE.

If I had to choose between seeing this army in real and seeing 3 girls naked, I would definetely take the bones army XD. (girls are overrated anyways)

I hope you stop doing all your other armies, because if you intend to go fully into this very cool project you'll need all the time and money you can get. You havn't even started painting, but the army is starting to look very cool so far.

I do prefer the skeletons IG : (
But who knows how these guys will turn out once they're painted.
The Dark Moon Kabal ,possibly the biggest DE army ever!
over 20k and awesome, what more do you need to click? (last updated the 02/03/2012)

Actually, I prefer the bones army too.  But after consideration, the cost of a Skeleton IG army would be astronomical.  Easily doubling the cost of every guardsman.  I just don't have that kinda money.  I really enjoy doing conversions, even if I am not that skilled at it.  And this project is something I wanted to do for a while.  I am figuring the models will all be done by the end of today (photos will be a while, since I don't have access to the camera right now).  The painting I am hoping to be done with by end of this month, or mid november.  I have put aside all other paint/modeling projects I have right now to get this one done.

im really liking how this project is coming along!

a few comments.

A- OHHH GW's not going to be happy... do i see scratch built bases ;) just take a file and smooth the edges out on them

B- that banner... its mind blowing! i love what you did with the marine. Very cool

C- i personly dont like the hell hound- id first cut the lasguns off and cover the holes up with fuel takes (also take the 2 off the turret). id also swap the infurno gun out for the heavy flamer from the russ spure. just cut off the canvas part and glue it on like this /-\

The little dash being the flamer

Hope i could help,
Cheers
