Harlequins well liked in DE or not?
« on: December 9, 2011, 01:17:09 PM »
I was looking at these guys and considering getting a unit or two to play with and wanted to get a general pulse about whether or not people think they are a good bang for your buck. They seem decent but I've haven't really seen any armies using them.

Also I don't get the 2D6x2? is that just 4D6? (hopefully I'm not breaking any copyright with this question)

2D6x2... not 4D6. Just use it that way :D.

Harlies are a fun unit to play with. I would personally run a 5 man unit with a deathjester and a shadowseer with kisses. Use them to pop light vehicles and then counter assault the enemy after helping an archon drop a WWP in the middle of the table. Also they would be lots of fun to paint!

Roll 2d6 and then multiply the result by 2.
(You get the same possible spread as 4d6 but the distribution is flatter so it's a more unpredictable result.)

I like the minis but I actually don't like how they perform in battle. Rending is nice but kisses are costly and a unit full of them runs about the same a Unit of Incubi does. They have of course their uses but I prefer the armour save of incubi.

In a WWP list they can deliver one relatively inscathed.

I think that they could be sucessful in a WWP list, but as they do not have a transport, there is no reliable delivery system.
I love SMurfs.  They taste good skewered on a Klaive.

Also they are quite squishy so you have to pcim their targets carefully. They can do a buttload of wounds but a 5++ and T3 means that anything that hits and wounds is probably going to undo the positives. As they cannot get FNP either. I think they work best in combination with another unit, although that won't stop a canny enemy assigned their attacks against them if possible.

I think that they could be sucessful in a WWP list, but as they do not have a transport, there is no reliable delivery system.

They do work very well as a wwp escort as long as your portal units do not have to need an aggressive placement. Bikes, scourges, hellions and beasts will do just fine with a conservative location even though it is only 6” (not counting the diameter of the portal) beyond your deployment line.

However, they are ideal when you do not have first move and you need to sit through your opponents shooting phase before moving forward – this will often bait your opponent into moving closer or get them to ignore you altogether (which is fine by me).

The other wwp is usually going to go on a raider so I will have one wwp that will walk forward and the other that is going to get aggressive with its placement (one low risk placement and high risk placement). I have even not needed the Harleys at all like in DoW deployments and have just put them in the portal instead. I remember once having the Harleys take the wwp/wracks raider when they first emerged – not the most reliable method but I feel the Harleys are flexible in this regard.

Just be sure to have a copy of the Eldar’s FAQ about VoT versus indirect fire.

I like to take:
1 Troupe Master w/fusion pistol and power weapon
1 Shadowseer w/fusion pistol and kiss
4 Troupes w/kisses

A little expensive but they do have synergy in a wwp list and often times they are assaulting in combo with wyches or hellions and thus far have made it to cc and won – they haven’t failed my basic expectations but I am a little bothered that they do not survive very long after that.

Mileage may vary.

Purely combat based, Incubi are better until you hit T6 or better... for the same points anyway. The big thing the harlies get is the whole ignore cover thing plus the ability to deal with very hard targets... both things incubi lack.

Never put harlies in a transport - veil of tears plus fleet plus flip belts make them fast on foot as it. They just become burning clowns in a transport.

I like them a lot. But lots of playtesting have showed that Wyches are almost always better... But they are fun to use. I run them in small almost naked squads.

5 with 4 kisses or 6 with 5 kisses. Nothing else. Keep them cheap. The 5 man setup costs 106p...

IMO opinion you need the shaow seer and troupe leader with PW in even the smallest squads to keep them going.

The LD boost and consistent damage from the troupe leader combined with the VoT from the seer to keep them moving makes them dangerous
