I will score this issue 1.3 out of 5.

TLDR: You will like this issue if you liked the Visions magazine.

For the first time since this monthly release of White Dwarf began I do not have a favourite article. That is not say that other people won’t find something they like but for me none of the articles were particularly interesting. To be perfectly honest this issue might end up in the bin and believe me that is a rare thing as I do not like throwing any written material away.

Including the adverts but not including the eight pages of Paint Splatter, three pages of Blanchitsu or the twenty pages of New Releases/Contents/Editorial this magazine has sixty pages that are nothing but photographs.

Similar to last month’s issue I think this issue was let down by the similarity of the articles. This month though instead of being about interviews and painting this issue is all about pictures and painting in one guise or another.

From page 64 to the end (page 145) you have articles that are essentially nothing but pictures of models. The Iron Legion, Hall of Fame, Four Warlords, Golden Demon, Battleground, Eavy Metal Masters, Paint Splatter, Hero Challenge, Readers’ Models and In the Bunker.

Before page 64 there is also eight pages of Illuminations which considering its content is also obviously nothing but pictures.

I know I shouldn’t say that I don’t like illuminations as one man’s meat is another man’s poison as they say but I find that I did not like most of the Tau artwork. I am a generally a fan of science fiction artwork but I really do not like the vagueness and soft lines that have been used to portray the Tau. It is telling perhaps that the best picture in my opinion is the one used for the cover of the 2001 Tau Codex.

Battleground is another article that is a bit of a let down from my point of view. I suppose the idea behind this style of article is to inspire likeminded hobbyists to emulate this style of work. That is fine but they could easily do that in less than ten pages considering the lack of actual information imparted by this article.

This ten page article that is supposed to inform us all as to how the display board was designed, built and painted is actually made up of eight pages of pictures and you learn very little about how it was built.

After last month’s brilliant Battle Report this month’s was back to the standard of previous Reports. That is, it consists of one large photo of the gaming board spread across two adjacent pages and the Report itself is scattered about in various box outs spread randomly about the photo of the board.

It is a shame really as the written content of this Report is as good as last month’s but the presentation style really lets it down.

This month’s Getting Started with The Horus Heresy continues in the same vein as the other articles. That is, the article is light hearted and readable but you don’t really learn much.

I learnt that I need to buy a Campaign Book or Army List book, choose a Legion, buy an upgrade pack, buy a Primarch and buy a Heavy Support.

Four Warlords is still just a painting fest and this month was all about how the Warlords painted one of the Harbingers.

Two of the Warlords had a battle but the write up of this battle took up approximately 1/6th of a page so didn’t do much to distract from the painting.
