picking a super heavy...
« on: March 31, 2009, 08:26:30 AM »
ok heres one for ya all, I have no desire to play much apoc... the games round here just seem to revolve to cheese and bad coversions (I was offended by bucket stompas a month after the plastic release) and sheer chaos of 8+ players trying to not ger thier fav models blown up

how ever I do quite like the thought of 3/3.5K games enough for 1 formation give or take with some support, to date I have 7 russ, 6 chimeras and a hellhound 100+ guard mostly painted

so to the point, I want to reward myself with a plastic superheavy when I finnish painting my guard so now with 10 choices what to pick? (please don't tell me just to magnatize)

not to ammused by the storm lord

quite like the banesword for the shadow sword look but 10" template

the simple baneblade for its sheer simple minded weight of fire?

though really like the new data sheet for the shadow sword and its support company, my guard do have a chaotic bent so themetically that may have impact

Depends on what you fight mostly, for general useage, the Banebalde really is the go to tank, it can do anti-armour, or anti-personel decently. But if you fight a lot of MEQ's, then the Stormlord really can't be beaten, the Vulcan mega-bolter just tears MEQ's apart with it's AP 3 Heavy 15...

My guard has a pair of Baneblades backed up by a Stormblade, for really big games.

if not playing by apoc rules I would get IA1 though and use those rules for 40k as standard 40k does not have 10" templates.
40k:
Eldar=12000pts
Slaanesh Deamons = 2000pts

Fantasy:
Slaanesh=5000pts
Wood Elves=6000pts
Slaanesh Deamons = 3000pts
High Elves 3000pts

If you wait a month, we would have something super sexy to help you decide.  ;)

But in the meantime, the general advice is whether or not you are looking for flavour in your army, or combat effectiveness. Granted that some formations would grant you both, but some superheavies just don't have that option to them.

Baneblades and Hellhammers give you tons of weapons to play around with, allowing you to take on all foes. The former also has the option to take different crew, especially important if you plan on fielding an infantry heavy Apocalypse army.

The Shadowsword variants are high specialised in what they do. As mentioned, the Stormlord takes care of your anti-MEQs needs very nicely. The Banehammer is especially useful against fast armies, giving you a few more turns of shooting before they reach your lines. The Shadowsword does a nice job to take out other tanks, superheavy tanks and the odd Titan, and even has the formation to go with it (ie. the Shadowsword Domination Force that I believe you are far more than capable of fielding).

In the end, it is your choice of what you want. I know that I got a Hellhammer because it's part of an urban assault force, so think about it. Flavour, or effectiveness?

the Shadowsword Domination Force is what I'm thinking at this point :)

Go for it then. Grab 3 Squadrons of 3 Sentinels, just because you can.  ;)

It's a lot of fire power on the field, and the Shadowsword can do wonders against your opponent's buckets, I mean, Stompas.
