THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The Emperor has two speeds: walk and kill.

My lord,

The expedition against the so-called "Vulpine Enclaves" in the Eastern Rim has been going quite well. As you already know, the enclaves are a festering pot of heresy, perpetrated by a group of former Imperial Guardsmen known as the "Vulpine Rangers" (formerly the [DELETED BY THE INQUISITION]), who have aligned themselves with a despicable race of aliens known as the Vulpine. During the past ten or so years, these heretics and their xeno allies have been seeding a message of human/xeno co-existence across the sector, and secessionist activity has been on the rise ever since. Enitre populations are now joining these so-called enclaves, and infuriatingly enough, it is has been exceedingly hard to identify any of these secessionist worlds or Ranger bases due to the secrecy that they keep. The skill that these heretics display in covert operations is remarkable, albeit despicable.

Despite the difficulty in tracking these heretical pirates and raiders, as well as those whom they have swayed to their xeno-loving cause, the offensive against the one known enclave world, Lucarion-- a medium-tithe world whose governor has actively seceded from the Imperium-- has been going quite well. Two whole regiments of Imperial Guardsmen, as well as a preceptory of the Order of the Blessed Damsel and a full legion of Hereticus Storm Troopers, have brought the fight to these heretics, and their faith and fury has been exemplary (though it should be noted that the Sisters of the Blessed Damsel, instead of burning the heretical population of the planet, have been sparing them and taking them prisoner wherever possible. It appears that the Sisters remain sentimental to the seemingly lingering displays of Imperial Faith on the planet, though we will deal with the Sisters' failings at a later date.) While the local PDF were swiftly routed, the Vulpine Rangers have been mounting an effective resistance, and their hit and run tactics (as well as alarming numbers of functional aircraft), have dealt our advancing forces many sharp blows.

Still, our main offensive is nearing Lucarion's planetary capital, Saffron City, where the remaining Vulpine forces have been holed up. The Sisters of the Blessed Damsel are leading our assault on the city, and once the last defences of these traitors have been broken, we shall surely purge them all in the Emperor's name (though of course, I will endeavour to take as many prisoners as possible for interrogation and exruciation.)

Your obd't servant,

Inquisitor Gerhardt Rudd.

"Canoness! Enemy armour up ahead!"

Isobel looked out across the shell-marked landscape, already hearing the heavy rumble of engines in the distance. She snatched a viewfinder from the belt of her armour and pressed it to her eyes, and was rewarded with the sight of a column of Chimeras and Leman Russ tanks, all gunmetal-grey with blue insignias, rumbling forwards through the treeline of Saffron's surrounding forest. These vehicles still proudly bore Imperial insignia, a fact that made Isobel want to spit in disgust. These traitors dared to bare the Emperor's emblem, to pervert it as they openly defied His word and His teachings...

The newly-appointed Canoness Preceptor shook her head and concentrated at the task at hand. These tanks were trundling out in an attack formation, driving towards the Sisters' positions in an armoured wedge. The Vulpine Rangers had arrived, and they were meeting the Sisters' advance head-on. If they weren't heretics and traitors, Isobel would have admired their boldness.

"A counter-offensive," she muttered. "They've been husbanding all of their armour until now, it seems."

Nearby, Sister Superiors Renee Arias and Avriel Solemnas nodded in unison. "This is it for them," she said. "This is the moment they've been waiting for. If they break us here, then they could roll back the entire offensive."

"And that's exactly why they won't break us here," Isobel replied, turning to her Sisters. "We've faced worse, Sisters, and won through in the end. We'll defeat this counter-attack, and let these traitors know the Emperor's judgement."

"Glory be to His name," the two Sister Superiors answered in unison.

Isobel nodded. "Go ready your squads," she said. "We have a battle to prepare for."

The two Sisters saluted and walked away. Turning around, Isobel resumed staring out at the distant enemy. The enemy tanks would be nearing battle cannon range soon, she knew, and then the battle would begin in earnest. She could already see armoured infantry advancing steadily alongside the tanks, proudly and fearlessly. These were no hastily-recruited PDF or ill-trained cultists like other heretics she'd fought. These were trained, disciplined soldiers, equipped and outfitted to be the equal of the best Imperial Guardsmen.

She lowered her viewfinder, remembering her first encounter with the Vulpine Rangers a year ago. They had fought with valour and distinction, and more noticeably, had praised the Emperor's name as they had fought. As much as she wanted to believe that the Rangers were heretics and traitors, their displays of faith had been convincing to the Canoness. How could such faithful soldiers have strayed so far, she wondered? How could they claim to venerate the Emperor, and at the same time defy His word by coexisting with filthy aliens?

As more armoured infantry advanced into view, Isobel saw a brown speck amidst the blue and black carapace armour. A robed, female figure stood amongst an armoured command group, holding onto a long wooden staff. Seeing a furred tail, Isobel's blood went cold when she saw that this was one of the Vulpines. Another of them, more catlike in appearance, crouched near the command group, as though eager to rush forward and hunt prey, but Isobel's attention was dominated by the robed female. A briefly crackle of electricity surrounded the alien, and Isobel quickly realized that she was a witch.

Could this be it? Could the Rangers' minds be dominated by witchcraft? If this was the case then, Isobel knew, that changed nothing. They had been corrupted by the witch's very presence, and no matter what, their souls had already been lost. The merciful thing to do would be to purge them and release them from their psychic enslavement.

Isobel's grip on the pommel of her sword tightened. Either way, she knew, it was the duty of the Sisters to purge traitors, and one way or another, these heretics would burn tonight...

Hey everyone, it's time for another battle report from yours truly! After the GW store moved to a closer location to my house (nice!), my Sisters got an outing against a friend of mine (Bluefox of this forum) and his pro-xeno Imperial Guard army. Given that my Sisters' first real battle was against Bluefox's army, we decided that it was a great time for a 1700 point rematch.

Our lists were as follows:

IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED, BURN, BURN, BURN AGAIN:

Canoness Isobel Deschain- jump pack, inferno pistol, blessed weapon, Cloak of St. Aspira, frag grenades- 136

Lots of power-armoured bodies to shrug off the Guard's firepower, and plenty of faith to help them out. My plan was simple: rush everything forwards and start burning/meltagunning things to death. Nice, simple, and straightforward.

Total: 1821

Although his army was about 70-odd points off, he was making the bump to the 1700-point level at the last minute, so I was cool with it. Included in his list was a Vulpine character of his own devising, Natalia. While I'm hazy on her rules at the moment, I do know that she had a high invulnerable save, fleet, lots of lightning claw attacks and a potential huge stat increase (though this was all balanced by random movement). Hopefully, I'll be able to post her rules later on.

DEPLOYMENT

Here's what my deployment looked like:

From left to right we have Seraphim Squad Perpetua, the Exorcist Divine Judgement, Battle Squads Esperanza and Celeste, my Canoness, Battle Squads Solemnas and Arias, the Exorcist Wrath of the Faitfhul, and Seraphim Squad Perpetua.

The mission we played was Gamma Seek and Destroy. No frills, just a straight-up battle to the death. On to the game!

TURN 1

"So the Sororitas are here."

Initially, Captain Crichton of the Vulpine Rangers didn't respond as he stared at across the field with his viewfinder, picking out the white-armoured Sisters as they advanced into view. There was a sizeable number of them, advancing on foot as a slew of armoured vehicles advanced behind them, all bearing plenty of holy iconography and pages of script. They were singing as they advanced, all chanting in a single clear, choral voice that could be heard all the way across the field. Crichton recognized the hymn from all the masses he had attended as a boy-- Psalm XVIII, "The Emperor Is My Shield."

"Looks like," Crichton muttered back to the Wulfen Shamaness. Natalia. He hated the prospect of having to fight soldiers as faithful and loyal as the Sororitas, but it had to be done. The Rangers had to repulse the brunt of the Imperial offensive before they reached the main settlement-- otherwise, all of those civilians would be sent to gulags, if not worse. He'd made a choice when he'd followed Colonel Glaive in the regiment's seccession from the Imperium all those years ago, and he stuck to that choice, no matter what the moral consequences. He lowered his rangefinder and picked up a nearby vox. "All units, prepare to fire to full effect on my order. Target their main infantry units."

Acknowledgements buzzed back on the vox, and Crichton turned to Natalia. The sleek alien was crouched near the front of the undergrowth, eying the Sororitas with predatory intent. "You sure you can handle them?" he asked. "These aren't Orks or Tau, you know. These ladies are trained fighters."

The cat-like alien made a sound akin to that of a grunt. "They will fall, all the same," she said, flexing her diamond-hard claws. And without a further word, she suddenly burst forward in a burst of speed, running on all fours towards the Sisters lines like a lunging cheetah.

Crichton nearly jumped at Natalia's headlong charge, and swore under his breath. Like it or not, Natalia had just started the battle for him. He was about to shout for her to come back when he caught sight of the Shamaness, who simply shook her head at him. Holding his tongue, Crichton turned around and snatched up the vox-set. "All units, FIRE AT WILL!" he shouted.

Then, as one, the guns of the Vulpine Rangers roared to life.

On the right flank, 2nd Armoured Cav's battlecannon boomed, and a shell exploded near the Seraphim of Squad Fatima, hurling them in all directions. Although the Seraphim had been praying for the Spirit of the Martyr, two of the Sisters were still shredded by the blast, while the autocannons of the Fire Support Team added their fire and pulverized a third.

Meanwhile, the central Leman Russ, Kill Blade, spotted the Sisters of Squad Arias huddling behind the bunker and fired. For Squad Arias, their prayers for Spirit of the Martyr failed outright, and three Sister were ripped apart as the tank shell exploded near them and hit them with shrapnel. The Chimera "Helldriver" turned its guns on Squad Arias as well, bringing down a fourth Sister through sheer weight of fire.

On the left flank, meanwhile, Squad Esperanza, in the cover of the bunker complex, came under fire from 1st Armoured Cav, and an accurate shell obliterated the centre of the bunker complex and sent the shorn bodies of three Battle Sisters flying upwards.

As the smoke from the shell-blasts began to lift, the battered Sisters began to pull themselves back up. To the consternation of the Vulpine Rangers, they began to sing hymns in unison, their voices reaching out across the battlefield and making the human and alien troopers alike shift uneasily. Despite taking significant casualties from a heavy ordnance bombardment, the Sisters were not only holding their ground, but even now were preparing to advance though the teeth of that firestorm. This wasn't bravery: this was faith at its strongest. Crichton's face turned white. The Wulfen Shamaness accompanying his squad merely stared out at them, her expression unreadable.

Across the field, Isobel saw smoke drifting from the craters, and the shorn bodies of her Sisters littering the ground. Cursing the Rangers, she switched on her comms. "Advance!" she commanded. In unison, Squads Arias, Solemnas, Celeste and Esperanza all mounted their Rhinos and began to drive towards the enemy, with Arias and Solemnas' Rhinos taking the right flank and Celeste and Esperanza's Rhinos taking the left. All of the Rhinos engaged their smoke launchers as they trundled onwards, concealing themselves in clouds of thick smoke  to confuse the enemy gunners. On the right flank, Squad Fatima, shaking off their losses, jetted towards the enemy, while on the left flank, Seraphim Squad Perpetua also jetted forwards, eager to bring their inferno pistols to bear against the enemy armour. In the centre, Isobel herself flew forwards, swooping through the low cover of the woods in the middle of the field to avoid being spotted by enemy gunners.

At the back of the Sisters' lines, the two Exorcists, Divine Judgement and Wrath of the Faithful, swivelled their ancient missile launchers and opened fire on the enemy tanks. The God-Emperor clearly was not guiding their aim today, however, as Wrath of the Faithful only fired a handful of missiles that exploded harmlessly against the frontal armour of 2nd Armoured Cav. Divine Judgement fared little better, the single missile that it fired doing little more than scratching the paint of Kill Blade. The Exorcist crews shook their heads, thinking that the Emperor must be punishing them for some fault that they had committed.

Seeing the lone xeno creature running out from the Traitors' lines, the Seraphim of Squad Fatima forwent shooting as they swooped down to engage the creature, once again praying for the Spirit of the Martyr as they did so. As they swooped low to attack, however, Natalia exploded into a blur of movement, burying her claws into the throat of one Sister before she could even strike. Reversing her weight, Natalia flipped away from the still-cooling corpse and lithely spun and danced across the ground, almost playfully avoiding the swinging pistols and snarling eviscerator of the Seraphim. Enraged by this alien's mockery, the Seraphim fought harder, flying around to surround the xeno and purge her with righteous fury.

TURN 2

Crichton cursed as he saw the smoke-shrouded Sororitas Rhinos bearing down on them, already having made it halfway across the field. This was not good: although the Rangers' initial volley had definitely hurt the Sisters, it hadn't been nearly enough to deter them. They had to stop those Rhinos now before they got into disembarkation range.

He turned to his vox-operator. "How long before our Storm Trooper teams arrive?"

"They're still out of drop range," the operator responded. "ETA ten minutes."

The Guard captain swore and switched on the main vox. "All units, concentrate fire!" he shouted. "I want those Rhinos stopped!"

The Ranger's battleline answered in unison as great guns roared into action. The 2nd AC fired its battlecannon at Squad Arias's Rhino. The shot was a little off, with the shell narrowly missing the personnell carrier and detonating right next to it. To Crichton's satisfaction, however, the explosion hurtled the Rhino to the side and tore off its right tread, immobilizing it.

Kill Blade, meanwhile, fired its own battlecannon at Squad Solemnas' Rhino, and, like the 2nd AC, missed, though the shrapnel of the explosion tore off the tank's storm bolter. The autocannon team added their fire, sending shot after shot thudding against the Rhino's armour. One high-calibre shell finally scored a telling hit, ripping through the Rhino's frontal armour and shattering its engine axles, causing the immobilized tank to judder to a halt.

The rest of the Rangers, however, were having less luck, as battlecannon shots scattered off their marks, and heavy bolter and lascannon rounds either missed or pinged off heavy armour. The Chimera "Warhound," transporting the 701st Armoured Knights, turned its guns on the incoming Seraphim of Squad Perpetua. Crichton watched as tracer fire slashed past the fast-moving Seraphim or bounced off their power armour, though one Seraphim fell to a direct hit from a heavy stubber round. The rest of the Seraphim, however, simply kept coming, chanting hymns of vengeance as they did so...

In the swirling melee on the right flank, the Seraphim of Squad Fatima once again prayed for the Spirit of the Martyr as they attacked the fast-moving Natalia. The xenos creature, however, effortlessly evaded the Sister's strikes, ripping open the armoured chest of one Sister with a clawed hand before turning and impaling another with her tail-blade. Enraged, Sister Fatima lunged at the creature with her eviscerator, but Natalia easily backflipped over the blow, landing in a teasing crouch a few metres away from her. Cursing, Fatima engaged her jump pack, jetting away just in time to avoid Natalia's snarling counter-charge.

Far above the xeno, Fatima stared back down at it, watching as it sprinted away from the shorn bodies of her Sisters. She fought the urge to charge back down at it and slay it, but she knew that she had an objective to fulfill, and she would rather take the Penitent Oath than forsake her duty. Angling around, Fatima flew towards the rightmost 2nd AC, readying her eviscerator and praying for the Emperor to watch over her...

Meanwhile, the Rhinos that were still mobile continued their advance. Squad Esperanza's Rhino trundled up next to the 1st AC, disgorging its passengers just as Isobel flew up and landed next to them. Squad Celeste also drove up near Helldiver, disembarking to gain firing angles on its weak side armour. The Seraphim of Squad Perpetua, shouting prayers of rage for their fallen Sister, jetted forwards, descending on Warhound like wrathful angels, and on the right flank, Squads Solemnas and Arias bailed out of their immobilized Rhinos, with Arias and her squad heading up towards the distant autocannon team and Squad Solemnas fanning out to catch Natalia in their gunsights.

The Exorcists, meanwhile, once again unleashed their missiles against the heretics' tanks. Once again, however, their efforts were in vain, as Wrath of the Faithful's missiles detonated harmlessly against the frontal armour of 2nd AC, while Divine Judgement's own volley against 1st AC was similarly ineffective. The armour-piercing missiles of the Exorcists were, in this battle, piercing very little armour.

A second later, however, Isobel trained her inferno pistol on 1st AC's side armour as she descended, turning the vehicle's treads and wheels into a molten mess and leaving it immobile and vulnerable. Squad Esperanza tried to finish the tank off, but their own melta did little but scorch the paint of the Russ' frontal armour.

Further to the right, Squad Celeste opened fire on the Chimera, and met with success as their meltagun's quickly turned their tank's treads into bubbling slag. The armour of the Chimera went red-hot from the hit, and a second later the Grenadiers inside the tank began to bail out the back hatch as the inside of "Warhound" caught fire.

Screaming the Emperor's name, the Seraphim of Squad Perpetua swooped down on the left-flank Chimera, "Helldriver," and fired their inferno pistols as they descended. Their shots must have been blessed by the Emperor himself, as the lancing beams of light burned through the tank's frontal hull and turret, atomizing the crew and driver before piercing the fuel tanks. The Chimera erupted in a massive ball of flame, sending fiery debris scattering everywhere. One Seraphim was struck by a burning bulkhead and died instantly as her spine was shattered, and the rest of the Seraphim pulled back slightly to avoid being hit by more shrapnel. Scanning the wreckage, Sister Perpetua cursed as she saw the Chimera's battered Grenadier passengers pulling themselves from the wreckage. To her chagrin, not one of the squad had been killed in the explosion...

On the right flank, Squad Solemnas opened fire on Natalia. There was a small burst of blood as a bolter round grazed Natalia's side, but the rest of the shots only found empty air as Natalia suddenly leapt upwards. The Vulpine assassin spun in midair, falling back down towards the Sisters with her claws outstretched...

Elsewhere, Sister Fatima flew over 2nd AC, flying far too quickly for the gunner of the pintle-mounted heavy stubber to track her. Diving down, she landed behind the tank in a crouch, before spinning around into a standing position. With a yell, she lunged and drove her snarling eviscerator into the rear armour of the tank, watching as sheets of reinforced metal tore and crumpled as the eviscerator ripped into them. Gritting her teeth, Fatima twisted the eviscerator to the side, tearing the rear hatch off completely. She saw the startled crew inside the tank start fumbling for their pistols, but they were too slow. Pulling a grenade from her belt, Fatima tossed it into the tank and jetted backwards. A fireball erupted inside the Russ, and the Sister watched in satisfaction as the heretic tank was reduced to a smoking wreck.

TURN 3

Crichton was sweating intolerably now underneath his carapace armour. Things had gone from bad to worse: the Sisters had already closed the distance and gotten into melta range. Already, two vehicles were immoblized, and two had been destroyed-- 2nd Armoured Cav had even been hacked open by a lone Seraphim with an oversized chainsword! Crichton felt the eyes of theWulfen Priestess fall and him, however, and he suddenly went calm. The Vulpine Rangers would pull through, he knew. They had blazed through the daemon-hell on Nihilus, had broken the back of the Ork Waaaagh on Salanor V, and had bested the Necrons on Perdify-X888. They had been through worse scraps than this.

As if on cue, Crichton suddenly heard the screams of jet exhaust overhead, and nearly cheered as he saw two Valkyries swoop down over the battlefield. Two groups of armoured figures emerged from the Valkyries as they made their run, gliding down towards the back of the Sororitas lines. The Storm Troopers had arrived.

And not a moment too soon, Crichton thought to himself as he saw the Sisters disembarking just a few clicks away. He grabbed the vox-set. "Rangers! They're on us!" he shouted. "Hit them back! Take the fight to them!"

The Vulpine Rangers responded to the order with well-drilled efficiency. The autocannon team, seeing the lone Sister who had destroyed 2nd AC, turned and opened fire on her. Although Fatima tried her best to dodge, one shell exploded right next to her head, sending bits of shrapnel lancing into her skull and instantly knocking her out with the concussion of the blast.

Elsewhere, Kill Blade's lascannon and heavy bolters swivelled to track the Sisters' Canoness, and, along with 703rd Squad, opened fire. As they fired, however, Isobel began to pray for the Spirit of the Martyr to protect her, and a holy light began to surround her. To Crichton's astonishment, lascannon, heavy bolter and hellgun rounds all bounced off her armour. Although one hellgun round found a weak point and blew a gaping hole in her abdomen, Isobel didn't seem to notice it as she advanced relentlessly towards Kill Blade, glowing like an apparition of the Emperor's fury. Suddenly, Crichton began to doubt the wisdom of fighting the Sisters of Battle...

On the right flank, however, the disembarked 702nd Squad had much more success as they sprinted forwards and opened fire on Squad Celeste. The Battle Sisters were caught be surprise, and four of them fell to a concentrated volley of hellgun, flamer and grenade fire. The heavy bolter gunners in Crichton's command squad added their fire, and a fifth Sister fell to an accurate headshot. Despite these horrendous losses, the Sisters held their ground, singing hymnals even as shots whipped past them.

At the back of the Sister lines, meanwhile, 706th Squad trained their meltaguns on Divine Judgement as they grav-chuted to the ground. Their descent must have fouled their aim, however, as their shots did little more than fuse the rear hatch of the tank shut.

With a predatory shriek, Natalia bowled into Squad Solemnas, instantly impaling one with her tail-blade. Springing off the toppling  corpse, she sliced another in half with a single blow, before spinning and knocking Sister Solemnas unconscious with a well-timed kick. Enraged, the Sisters moved to surround Natalia as they brought their knives and bolters to bear...

Picking herself up from where a grenade blast had hurled her into the dirt, Sister Celeste snarled and whipped up her bolt pistol. "Return fire, Sisters!" she shouted. "Purge the traitors!" Following her command, Squad Celeste advanced on 702nd Squad and opened fire. Burning prometheum from the squad's heavy flamer reduced four of the heretics and aliens to ashes, before a further two were killed by bolter and melta rounds. Another traitor fell as his upper body was pulverized by an accurate shot from a Rhino's storm bolter, and the last three traitors didn't even have time to fire back before a shrieking volley of missiles from Divine Judgement annihilated them utterly, scattering their remains across a wide radius. Squad Celeste didn't pause to celebrate their success, however, as they advanced onward, sighting the enemy Command Squad in the distance.

Meanwhile, at the back of the Sisters' lines, Wrath of the Faitfhul turned around, swivelling its own missile launcher and unleashing missiles at 705th Squad. Two Storm Troopers were blasted apart by armour-piercing warheads, though they rest refused to run.

At the north side of the battlefield, Squad Perpetua swooped down on 1st AC, training their inferno pistols on its side armour. Their aim was true, as the white-hot melta beams pierced the tank's heavy armour, and, like the Chimera before it, burned all the way to the tank's ammo stores. The Leman Russ was torn asunder in an almighty explosion, and such was the titanic force of the blast that all of the nearby combatants were hurled backwards. Three of the Seraphim were incinerated by the explosion, as were two of Squad Esperanza, while the Grenadiers of 703rd Squad lost four of their number to the whirling debris and bursting flames.

Gingerly, the Sisters of Squad Esperanza picked themselves up, many of them nursing minor injuries from the explosion. They didn't pause, however, as they quickly advanced on 703rd Squad, chanting litanies of hate as they quickly and efficiently wiped out five more of them with bolter and flamer fire, leaving one battered Veteran Sergreant standing amidst the charred bodies of his soldiers.

Further down, Isobel flew next to Kill Blade and fired her inferno pistol into it, immobilizing it as she reduced the side of the tank' hull and its treads to a bubbling mess, and, more effectively, causing internal fires that the stunned crew began frantically trying to put out.

On the right flank, Natalia continued to dance through Squad Solemnas, her claws slicing three more Sisters to bloody ribbons before they could even defend themselves. Shouting vindictive curses, the Sisters tried to surround Natalia, clubbing at her with their bolters, but none of them could land a solid hit on the fast-moving alien. Undaunted, the Sisters fought on, determined to purge this alien fiend.

TURN 4

Despite the arrival of the Storm Troopers, Crichton could see that the situation had definitely turned worse. The battle had devolved into a close-ranged firefight, a form of warfare in which the Sister excelled, and already, the superior armour, weaponry and manouverability of the Sisters was beginning to tell. Another Leman Russ was down, and another was immobilized. Although Natalia was having success against the Sororitas in close combat, she was already wounded, and it was only a matter of time before she was brought down as well. Add to that the fact that two Battle Sister squads were advancing on his Command Squad, it was painfully obvious to Crichton that the Rangers were fighting a losing battle.

The Captain pulled his power sword from its scabbard and thumbed the activation rune, watching the blade hum to life. "This is it, lads!" he shouted on the vox. "Fire at will! Make every shot count!"

The 701st Armoured Knights had obviously heard their Captain's command, and, pulling themselves free from the wreckage of their Chimera, they advanced down the right flank. Seeing Squad Perpetua near the wreckage of 1st AC, the Grenadiers raised their weapons and unleashed a blistering volley off hellgun, grenade and flamer fire into the last three Sisters. Even power armour wasn't proof against such an intense barrage, and in an instant, all three seraphim had been shot out of the sky.

On the right flank, meanwhile, heavy weapons swivelled to the right to track the advancing remnants of Squad Celeste, and opened fire. Heavy bolter and multilaser fire from the Command Squad and Helldriver lashed against the Sisters like rain, and two of the armoured figures fell under this storm of fire. The autocannon team, meanwhile, raked the advancing Squad Arias with fire, but none of their shots could pierce the Sororitas power armour.

At the south side of the battlefield, the plasma-toting Storm Troopers of 705th Squad fell back into some dense foliage to take cover from the Exorcist's missiles. The melta-toting 706th Squad, meanwhile, advanced towards Divine Judgement and once again fired on its rear armour. This time, their shots hit home, as their meltaguns quickly destroyed the Exorcist in a burst of flame.

In the ongoing melee on the right flank, Natalia continued to effortlessly dodge and deflect the Sisters' clumsy blows. In mid-dodge, however, she suddenly paused, and began to twitch and spasm uncontrollably. Her eyes went red, and with a bloodthirsty shriek, she lashed out with one paw, tearing three Sisters apart with one swing. Only one Sister remained, drenched in the blood of her Sisters, and, weeping tears of rage, she fought on, determined to destroy this monster that had murdered her Sisters.

Although the heretics' fire had intensified, it hadn't been enough to drive the Sisters back. Striding through the gunfire, Sister Celeste and her remaining two Sisters advanced towards the enemy position in the woods, as did Squad Arias. The enemy troopers suddenly looked understandably nervous as two Squads of Battle Sisters advanced on them from two different directions, advancing into rapid fire range. Then, as one, the two squads lowered their weapons and opened fire...

The woodland that the traitors were occupying quickly became a raging inferno as the Sisters fired their heavy flamers into it. Guarsdsmen fell screaming as they burned, while more of them were gunned down at close range by the Sisters' unrelenting bolter fire. Three of the autocannon gunners were immolated in the firestorm, while the command squad was utterly annihilated, with the four bodyguards quickly burning to death...

Crichton screamed as he felt his carapace armour melting. His whole body was on fire, and he writhed on the ground, trying desperately to put the fires out. Nearby, the Wulfen Priestess was screaming as well as her fur and her robes burned away. Crichton swore futilely, trying to prop himself up as he burned, trying to will his legs to move...

He saw one of the Sisters aim a meltagun at the Priestess. He realized what was going on, and, despite the searing pain his body was in, leapt upwards into the path of the shot. The Priestess looked up in time just to see Crichton disappear in a searing hot burst of white light, the strong stench of ozone filling her sensitive nostrils. Everything around her was an intangible mess of screaming bodies, and the mixing scents of cooking flesh and burning fuel. It was a maddening, terrifying experience.

And through it all, the Priestess saw the Rhino gunner swivelling her storm bolter at her in the corner of her eye. Concentrating despite her pain, the Priestess was enveloped in a brilliant light and disappeared, just before the bolter rounds tore apart the ground where she had once been...

Elsewhere, Squad Esperanza surrounded the quivering, shell-shocked Sergeant of 703rd Squad. Despite the heat of battle, they granted the sergeant a degree of mercy, allowing him to quickly mouth a final prayer to the Emperor before Sister Esperanza put a bolt in his head. Wrath of the Faithful, seeking to avenge the destruction of Divine Judgement, once again fired on 705th Squad and blasted apart two more of them, despite their cover, leaving the sergeant and one plasma gunner crouching amidst the bloody bits and pieces of their comrades.

Shouting a prayer to the Emperor, Isobel flew towards Helldriver. The turret turned to track her, but Isobel was quicker, melting the tank's multilaser with her inferno pistol. Closing the distance, Isobel shouted for the Hand of the Emperor to give her strength, and brought her sword swinging down on the tank's side armour. Such was the strength of the blow that her sword sliced right through the reinforced hull, before a second blow smashed open the side armour altogether, leaving a gaping hole in its wake-- large enough for Isobel to hurl a frag grenade into. The Canoness darted back, just as the grenade detonated inside the Chimera, detonating its fuel stores and reducing the tank to a smoking wreck.

Looking with satisfaction at her handiwork, Isobel turned, just in time, to see the last Sister of Squad Solemnas fall to the ground, Natalia's jaws clamped around her throat. The xeno looked up from her kill, blood still dripping from her maw, and fixed her wild-eyed gaze on Isobel. The Canoness' blood went cold, and the grip on her sword tightened as the two of them stared each other down...

TURN 5

With a feral shriek, Natalia leapt towards Isobel, bounding towards her on all fours. Isobel readied herself, gripping her blade in both gauntlets as she prepared to meet the xeno's charge. Elsewhere, however, the remnants of the Vulpine Rangers were either hunkered down behind cover, or else had no visible targets left to engage. As such, the only other movement from the rebel Guardsmen came from Kill Blade swivelling its guns around to target the Canoness...

At the back of the field, the last two Troopers of 705th Squad fired their plasma guns at Wrath of the Faithful, and were rewarded to see one plasma bolt hit the tank's missile launcher, shattering it in a small explosion and leaving the Exorcist weaponless. Further up, the scorched remnants of the Fire Support Team, knowing they were doomed, nonetheless resolved to go down fighting, firing their autocannons at Squad Arias and gunning down one of the Sisters.

To the left, Kill Blade's main lascannon burst to life, just as Isobel began to pray for Spirit of the Martyr. To the crew's surprise, the Canoness was once again surrounded by a holy light, and the lascannon blast and heavy bolter rounds simply bounced harmlessly off of her armour. The hull heavy bolters spart their rounds at the Canoness as well, but Isobel simply ignored the shells as they exploded harmlessly against her blessed armour. Her attention was focussed on Natalia, mumbling another prayer for the Spirit of the Marytr and bringing her blade up as Natalia leapt up at her...

There was a clash of sparks as Natalia's claws slashed down against Isobel's blocking blade, the unholy strength of the xeno's strike sending Isobel staggering back. Natalia dropped to the floor, spinning and sending a clawed kick up at Isobel's face. Isobel managed to step back at the last minute, narrowly avoiding having her face sliced to ribbons, before slashing back. Natalia sprang out of the way of Isobel's blade with almost mocking ease, landing feet-first on the haft and sending a out a kick that hammered Isobel in the face. As the Canoness staggered back, winded, Natalia dropped low and slashed out with her claws, hitting with such force that she tore Isobel's sword from her hands and sent it scattering uselessly across the field.

Isobel didn't even have time to dodge before a paw full of razor-sharp claws short forwards, punching right through the armour of her abdomen and emerging out of her back in a welter of blood. Isobel went wide-eyed, coughing up a gobbet of blood from her mouth, before Natalia wrenched her fist free and hit the Canoness with a right hook, sending her crashing onto her back in a clatter of armour. Her entire world was swirling into a dizzy, agonized mess as her head swam. A second later, Natalia was on top of her, sinking her sharp canines into her shoulder guard, biting right through the armour and piercing the flesh beneath. Crying out in pain, Isobel tried to punch back, but Natalia easily dodged the blow. Snarling, the berserk thing began to punch Isobel in the face again and again, each punch ringing like a hammer-blow against the human's skull...

A second later, Natalia suddenly stopped. Blood began to dribble from the corner of her mouths, and the redness suddenly began to clear from her eyes. Wordlessly, she toppled over, Isobel's combat knife lodged into her chest. Gasping for breath, Isobel dizzily rolled over and began to stagger back to her feet, trying to fight back the dizziness from both the repeated punches and the blood loss. Her face was caked in a mask of blood, and the front of her armour was soaked red. Silently thanking the Emperor for helping her vanquish the xeno, Isobel engaged her jump pack, flying off to bring the Emperor's Wrath down on more of the traitors and xenos.

Emboldened by their Canoness' success, the Sisters advanced en mass. Squad Esperanza advanced within meltagun range of Kill Blade, just as Isobel swooped down behind the battle tank, and on the right flank, Squads Celeste and Arias encircled the last Guardsmen of the Fire Support Team. Wrath of the Faithful, left weaponless by 705th Squad, edged backwards around the nearby foliage to avoid further fire from the enemy plasma guns.

The Fire Support Team didn't even have a prayer as Squads Celeste and Arias opened fire. They only had time to give a half-hearted cry of "For the Emperor" before the last three Guardsmen were incinerated in a wave of heavy flamer fire. Isobel, meanwhile, aimed her inferno pistol at the rear armour of Kill Blade and fired. The melta beam sliced right through the tanks armour and burned its way to the ammo stores. A second later, the tank exploded, sending charred bits of metal hurling upwards as thick black smoke rose from the Russ' wreckage.

******

It was just after the last traitor tank exploded that the jet screams could be heard over the battlefield. The Sister collectively tensed, and suddenly realized that the traitors' air support had just returned.

A second later, a shrieking squadron of five Vulture gunships swooped across the field, gun pods ablaze. The Sisters dove for cover as autocannon fire tore up the ground around them. Leaning dizzily against the burning hulk of the Leman Russ, Isobel cursed as she saw her Sisters getting pinned down by the aerial strafing. With both Exorcists either destroyed or disabled, they had no adequate anti-aircraft weaponry, and no real way of repelling this attack. The Canoness knew, however, that this attack was meant only to keep her Sisters pinned down. The traitors ad something else up their sleeve, Isobel knew.

The Canoness' thoughts were confirmed when three heavier Valkyrie transports flew into view, weaving between the Vulture's gunfire as they came in low near the remnants of the heretical infantry. Isobel cursed as she saw the traitors escaping, quickly clambering into the open rear hatches of the hovering transport. Gritting her teeth, she staggered away from the burning Russ, just as, one by one, the Valkyries lifted off, taking the remaining Rangers with them.

"No..." she managed to say hoarsely as she saw one of the Valkyries drift down near the fallen body of Natalia. The xeno was still breathing-- Isobel's knife-thrust hadn't been enough to kill her, and even now, Rangers were reaching out of the gunship's back hatch, grabbing onto her fallen body and pulling her up with them. Isobel quickened her pace, even though blood leaked from her wounds with every step. She couldn't let those traitors get away...

"Canoness!" She barely even heard the shout, lost over shrieking jet-exhaust as the Vultures overhead wheeled and soared away. A second later, the Valkyrie, too, turned its nose upwards, and, with a blast of blue flame from its engines, shot skywards. Isobel tried to engage her own jump pack, to give chase after them, but found herself hampered as she felt armoured hands grabbing onto her.

"Restrain her!" she heard the voice of Arias saw as the Valkyries disappeared into the distance. It was then that Isobel realized that her Sisters were trying to hold her down and restrain her. She lashed out at them, even as she found herself sinking to her knees. "Let...let go..." she managed to mumble.

"Canoness, please don't move!" She heard Sister Celeste exclaim. "You're too hurt--"

"Bind her up, quickly!" Esperanza shouted. "She's lost too much blood! We need to get her to the Hospitallers, fast!"

A second later, Isobel collapsed onto her back, her world spinning in a dizzy collage. She was dimly aware of the faces of her Sisters hovering above her. "W...witch...did we...get the witch..."

She saw Sister Arias grimly shake her head. "No, Canoness. The witch used its powers to escape. Forgive us, Canoness, we failed--"

That was all that Isobel heard before she passed out. Her Sisters collectively pulled their unconscious Canoness upright, carrying her along as they frantically tried to get her toa working Rhino...

Meanwhile, a lone figure in the bushes watched as the humans bore away their injured leader. The figure smiled, despite itself. This human had been strong enough to best Natalia in single combat, something that the figure would never have expected from a member of such a weak race. The figure turned and slinked off into the darkness, hoping that this human would recover soon. The thrill of killing her, after all, would be lost if she was in no fit condition to fight...

SISTERS MINOR VICTORY!

THOUGHTS:

Well that was a brutal, albeit fun, game. Initially, Bluefox's tanks took and impressive toll on my Sisters, even stopping two of my Rhinos on turn 2. When I got into flamer and meltagun range, though, it was practically over: his Grenadiers died in droves to my heavy flamers, and my meltaguns (and especially inferno pistols) were death to his tanks. There was simply nothing that Bluefox could do to stop my Sisters from rolling up his line.

That's not to say that his Guardsmen didn't give my Sisters a run for their money. Both of my Seraphim squads-- my usual game-winners-- were killed off rather quickly, and my Battle Squads took heavy casualties from Guard shooting. That special character of his was an absolute beast, munching through most of my right Seraphim squad and a full Battle Squad, and almost killing off my Canoness before she was finally brought down. Her random movement didn't come into play much in this battle, especially since all of my squads wound up so close to her. Even so, at the end of the day, there was nothing Bluefox could do to counter my manouverability, especially where my fast-moving, tankbusting, nigh-invincible Canoness was concerned.

If I were to replay this battle, then I probably would have targeted the softer Chimeras and Grenadiers with my Exorcists instead of the AV14 Leman Russes, since my meltaguns sorted the battle tanks out a lot more easily in the end. As it was, my Exorcists did very little in this game before they were destroyed/de-weaponed by Bluefox's Storm Troopers. Personally, I think that Bluefox's plasma Stormies would have been put to better use deep-striking against my infantry (all those rapid-firing plasma guns would have been especially deadly for my Canoness), but they still managed to de-weapon one of my Exorcists, so they still did good regardless. All of his regular Grenadiers did quite well as well, and took an impressive toll with their shooting (moreso than his Leman Russ tanks, even).

All in all, I was very pleased with my army's performance in this battle. Everything did what they were supposed to do (except the Exorcists), and my Canoness, in particular, was a real nightmare for the Guard. Hats off to Bluefox, who was a great guy to play against, and who kept his cool even when his tanks started to die. The moment of the game for me has to be the destruction of the Leman Russ on the right flank on turn 3, with the ensuing explosion killing three Seraphim, two Sisters and four Grenadiers. Truly, that was the nastiest tank explosion I've ever seen, and we both had a good laugh over it. All in all, a great game, and I look forward to playing Bluefox again.

MVP: My Seraphim were excellent in this game, with the two squads, between them, killing two Leman Russ tanks and a Chimera. My Canoness, however, definitely gets the MVP for this battle, as she not only destroyed a Leman Russ and a Chimera on her own, but also finally defeated my opponent's rampaging character. Truly, she was made of heroic stuff in this battle.

On my opponent's side, I'd have to nominate Natalia for MVP, as she was just unstoppable until the final turn. Squad Solemnas hadn't held her up for so long, she probably would have munched through a good chunk of my army. Truly, she's a nasty character...when she's moving in the right direction, at least.

LVP: The Exorcists sucked in this game. For the first two turns, they couldn't even scratch the Guard tanks, let alone destroy them. It was only later in the game that they started killing squishier infantry. I've noticed that lately, in my games, my Exorcists have been failing a lot. I really, really hope that this trend doesn't continue.

An impressive win for the Sisters, even more so as you were at a significant points disadvantage, and playing against a home-ruled character or two.  I might suggest to Bluefox that instead he use his Vulpines as an Inquisitor and an Eversor Assassin, to make the game a little more balanced - it seemed like Natalia was pretty devastating and perhaps a bit overpowered.

nice win for the sisters!

Though the guard forgot the most important rule of 40K.

Speed Kills....

If he could have, he should have targetted the Sisters Rhinos with his first barage, destroying/damaging as many as he could, forcing your sisters to foot it across the battlefield, giving him more time to pour fire into them.

I don't think the plasma troopers would have done much except die to the Cannoness, she had her 2++ save too often for the plasma to matter.  Much better to unload hellguns into her...and make her take 8+ saves. (or lasguns..anything that puts large numbers of wounds on her..and at T3, that's pretty easy to do.)

The 'special' character while at 200pts seemed a bit fishy.  Much better to use an established 'assassin' or other special character than make your own up.   The points seemed about right on...I could get a 3rd ed Demon prince up that high with jump pack, demon armor and claws would have done about the same, so maybe not that bad anyway.

Anyway, gratz on the win, it was a nicely written report!  Sisters rock!

For 200 points, Natalia didn't seem overpowered. She's a close combat special character who cleaned through two non-close combat squads and then was brought down by a power weapon. Meh.

Anyways, nice battle, great report, and congrats on the win (especially for being so underpointed. The guard have no excuse for fielding that many points over an established limit). As you mentioned, the only thing you could have done differently was shoot the exorcists at the chimeras, as missiles generally don't do anything to AV14, and this game was no exception.

As for the guard player, he made an absolutely fatal error with the placement of the storm troopers. Your sisters with the flamers were your greatest threat to his infantry, and your jetpacking inferno pistols / eviscerators were your biggest threat to his vehicles. Instead, a lot of points of firepower that would have been good against either of those targets were instead completely wasted by shooting your missile tanks, which were only ever a medium level threat in the first place. Had he dropped them in his own lines, he could easily have taken out the canoness and at least severely damaged a squad of sisters, relieving his threatened forces right before their complete destruction at your skillful hands.

That, and way to get him to shoot at units with the invul prayer on  ;) Classic.

Anyways, you played very well, getting the most damaging units to where they could do the most damage, and taking advantage of the fact that your opponent's units weren't supporting each other very well. Fine job.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

In Bluefox's defence, Natalia, while utterly lethal in close combat, is hampered by her random movement rule (ie she runs in a random scatter dice direction). That said, though, Bluefox was lucky in that he wound up running her in the right direction the whole battle.

As to him being over-pointed, well...it was only at the last minute that I proposed we play 1700 pts, so I'm not that surprised that he made a few errors (not that I mind, at any rate).

As to your tactical analysis of the battle, I agree, Bluefox should have shot at my transports first (though I had more or less managed to hide them all behind terrain, so doing so wasn't exactly going to be easy for him). I agree with Ailaros in that his Storm Troopers would have been nastier against my Sisters, though-- all that plasma would have made my poor girls weep.

As an aside, did anyone find this report a strenuous read? Ie, should I cut down on a little of the fluffiness in future so that its easier to discern the in-game moments? If so, then let me know, and I'll try to make my next report a little less overdone in terms of fluff.

Thanks again for the comments. And Bluefox, I look forward to barbequing your Nids. ;D

Great game and great write up. Over my internet limit, so's taken me a while to actually load the page up.

Great to see the SOB get a win and even better to see some heavy flamers absolutely burn heretical scum. Love that weapon, Guardsmen cannot hope to compete when one of them is within range.

Good to see some use of inferno pistols, don't field 2 Seraphim squads often. As great as they were, the casualties from explosions were a bit of a dampener. There range certainly works against them. Even though they died early those Seraphim, they did their job. Removing the tanks is the hard bit, the Battle sisters are more than equipped to remove light infantry.

BlueFox maybe should've retreated his tanks back more or shield them with infantry. With some very short ranged weapons, he should be prepared for them and make sure you couldnt get within 6".
Did those ordnance blasts hit your tank or did the hole scatter off them? Made it sound like they were not direct hits.

Natalia was broken, no doubt about it. I'm glad that your Canoness fittingly removed her from the battlefield.

No, the holes went on the tanks alright. I just wrote them as hitting the sides because, well....you can't imagine a shell that hits a tank's front ripping off its side treads, can you?

Other than that, thanks for the feedback! To whom it may concern, I've just inserted plenty of paragraph breaks to make the reading a lot easier.

Sounds like a great battle.
The fluff with the battle and the pics were something different.
Why does no-one else do that?
I think it makes the battle seem better because you don't have to visualise it and you can actually see it!
