Title: Artcore's Army Diary - Ultramarines
Post by: Artcore on April 23, 2009, 09:59:24 AM
A few years ago I was collecting a WHF Skaven army and was active on a forum where lots of people started a topic on the collecting, painting and overall progress of their armies. I couldn't find any army diaries on this forum but decided to start one anyway.
The idea is post some pics of the models I'm working on and have finished painting so everyone who's interested can follow the development of my Ultramarines Army.

I've played and collected Warhammer Fantasy since '93. At this time it was really about loading your general with the best combo of magic items and win the game. But I liked painting mostly. Between '96 and '05 I didn't touch any GW models, but picked it up once my brother picked it up and we discovered the game had become way more balanced and troops were important again. So I collected Skaven and Chaos mortals & deamons.

Never was into 40,000 though. Till a month ago when I read a 40k battle report (ultra vs orks) and saw how nice the models were. Went to the shop to get a few guys (devastator squad); just for painting.
But the battle report also got me interested in the game and soon I wanted to have my own army. Played a demo game in the GW store and liked it very much!
Last week I got the SM Codex and the Assault on Black Reach box so I'm busy understanding the rules and how to make an army list.

Here's a list of what I have/painted/want:

Finished painting:
-1 devastator squad (5)
-1 rhino
-2 sergeants
-7 SM w/bolters, 1 w/flamer

To do:
-5 scouts w/snipers
-1 dred (almost done)
-captain
-8 SM
-5 terminators

To buy:
-another dred
-another rhino
-a few SM's to complete my 2nd tac.sq.
-predator and/or vindicator

I try to force myself not to buy any more models till I'm almost finished with the ones I have. The terminators are low priority though since I don't plan to use them in my first games.

Hopefully I can play some small games next week!

> All links to the 40KO Gallery don't work anymore so I removed most of them. More recent posts have working images. <

Here are some pictures of my stuff.

First 40k painting ever. Devastators:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FSnDZxHFlQiI%2FAAAAAAAAALI%2Fonzd2Ei3t98%2Fs800%2Fdev1.jpg&hash=2cc6650b1b753f46aeaeb8f9eacafdbbef64d74e)

And I just finished my first complete Tactical Squad:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh4.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FSnDZxhfR8dI%2FAAAAAAAAALQ%2FeVA2INcXEMc%2Fs800%2Ftact1a.jpg&hash=57f0515d94194b9c435cf065483f82a62c29d061)

The pictures are not so good now... taken with my phone. Hope to make some better pictures soon when I get my camera back from my girlfriend.

The dred is almost finished and I enjoy painting him. The idea of having an ancient dead warrior controlling this big robot killing machine is awesome.

Thanks for reading and hope you like it  8)

Nice looking army, but the pictures from the 'two metal sergeants' and lower aren't being shown. It says that I am not allowed to view those files and to make sure that I am connected to the server.

Your dev squad is very nicely painted but in terms of actual game play, I would try to streamline the weapons, an 8 man squad with 4 X ML is a good unit on the battlefield. Your tactical squads could always use the other heavy weapons ^^.

Painting is really nice. Neat, crisp and striking. It's not *exactly* Ultramarines (you've use a lot more red, especially on vents, knees, and heads), but that makes it better IMO.

Three things, though.
1) Your painting is fantastic, but the Devastator Sergeant is a bit of a let down in terms of his big lamp thing. The red is good, but there are wires and a bulb in there that haven't really been picked out when I think they should have. Also, the blue-headed Veteran sarge (lovely models, btw) should have some sort of writing on his chestplate. You definitely look handy with a brush. I think a Romanesque name to fill out that gold would be brilliant. At the moment it just looks... empty..
2) Your Rhino door is on backwards ;). I like the bootprints (I assume they're bootprints) on it, though.
3) Your Devastators squad (again, looks pretty), isn't really combat optimal. You've got no spare bodies to absorb incoming fire, and that Powerfist (while awesome) isn't going to see a lot of combat. If it does, you're in trouble. ;)

Of course, these are just minor things. On the whole they look immense. I particularly like the Squad marking on the Rhino hatch, and the way the red breaks up those Marines.

It's definitely a good start!  Your painting is very neat and crisp, and is done quite well.  I agree that there are some details that could be done to really add a lot more depth and complexity to your models; such as the details listed above, as well as some of the skulls on helmets/guns (I do these in various whites or metallics), buttons and coils (such as the bits on the backpack that you see from the front, right behind the head, I use two different brighter colours and then metallics on the tubes).

Also the rhino looks good as well, but I would add some appropriate decals, maybe some purity seals on certain locations (on my bigger tanks I usually have them on weapon housings or the engines).

Again, nothing wrong with any of it (aside from the rhino door...).  It's a lovely thing about marines, you can start very simple, but can go miles into detailing and personalizing your minis with small conversions, weathering, and a good eye for detail.

Keep it up.

I know what you mean.  I started my ultramarine army as something fun to paint and not be crazy anal about, but after I finished my first unit I just went crazy into detail, without using any difficult techniques but still ones that take time.  I routinely use highlighting, weathering, glow effects, shading, and full painting of detail.  Granted my lsat plasma cannon marine took me some 8 hours probably.

Really nice looking models.  I have no criticisms since they're better than my models.   :P

It still looks like Ultramarines right?
The red accents look excellent.  They are still very ultra, no worries.  I'd focus on knocking out 2 full tac squads since they're the least interesting models to paint(imo) and you don't need more than that for most lists.

The footprints on the rhino door are a nice touch.

What did you use for your gold trim, by the way?
Title: Re: Artcore's Army Diary - Ultramarines
Post by: Algavinn of the Many Paths on April 25, 2009, 08:52:21 PM
Aye, I like it very much.  I just did shinning gold with highlights/chipping of 75% mithril silver 25% shinning gold, and I think I like yours better, it just has a much deeper colour that doesn't seem to be such an overpowering 'bling', though I am still satisfied with my method.
Title: Re: Artcore's Army Diary - Ultramarines
Post by: Algavinn of the Many Paths on May 1, 2009, 02:02:09 PM
I don't really have a distinct picture of it.  I have a WIP thread in the painting forum that shows my army, or in the space marine gallery (added yesterday or such), though they don't give enough detail probably.  Really its just shinning gold with the edges in that mixture of mithril+gold, though not on every bit of the edges to show that it's not just highlighting, but also kind of a weathered looked where the gilding has started to come off.

You seem to be having a problem with your hosting site, the last two posts that you tried to post pictures in havent worked.

Yeah I noticed your pics of a dred and a predator, really nice paint job!

Do the pictures work now? I just put them in the gallery and then use the link in my post but apparently it doesn't work?
Title: Re: Artcore's Army Diary - Ultramarines
Post by: Algavinn of the Many Paths on May 1, 2009, 03:34:17 PM
Danke!  I'm thinking they'll both look damn nice once I do weathering, detailing, and finish highlighting.  I'm pretty satisfied with them (I also need to paint up my black reach dread or just modify the melta arm so that I'll use it... All of my lists have a drop pod multi-melta+flamer dread at the moment).

The second one that you type out linked in the first of the last two picture posts works (the one from the gallery) but the rest don't, no.

I think the Scouts need some colour on their goggles and scopes. Also the piping that runs from the rifle. Marines are looking good, as ever.

@ Sheepz: I did colour the goggles and scopes green but I guess the picture is not so good. I'll make some better pictures when the squad is finished.

Still painting the captain (don't want to rush it) and started to paint some terminators:

If you haven't already done so, some form of brown wash on the Crux Terminatus (The gold bits on their shoulders, essentially) might bring out more detail. Also drill their storm-bolters out. Your painting is fantastic, but it's let down by the end of the gun (which is not your fault).

Very nice work.

And I know I should buy a small drill to make some holes in the guns. When you start painting these AoBR models you discover they are of less quality than the other GW models..

While they are slightly less quality, I don't think any of the Marine kits (multipart Terminators included) have drilled out gunbarrels. Except for the Devastators. You would have the same problem for normal termies, which is a shame.

Very nice looking army... This makes me want to collect + paint my armies before fielding them..sadly i get too anxious to play hehe,

Maybe with my next army i'll do something along the lines of what you have done and are doing.  Very nice, =)

I see you have about 4 armies? Then it's really hard to spend time on everything to paint it nicely and finish an army. But yeah, a lot of people can buy faster than they paint  ;)

Last weeks I've been busy with the BattleForce models. Gluing the tacticals, assaults, scouts and rhino. Also I played my first real battle (1250p) and won gloriously. I played gunline against CSM and my list worked very well.

Last week I discovered magnets! So I wanna show you what I've done with these little helpers.

I got a predator lascannon from my LGS and used this to make my second rhino into a razorback (and back again).

Tomorrow I'll receive a Vindicator and a Land Raider. I'm gonna use the magnets on the LR to be able to switch guns in my lists. Do you have any suggestions on how to do this?

Cheers,
Aart

Thanks Algavinn! I didn't do anything special if I remember correctly  :-\
After the black prime I painted Boltgun Metal and after that Black wash (from the new citadel wash line). I use if for all my SM metals 'cause I really like the results.

Hope it works for you too!

Didn't do too much painting lately due to a major exam (which I past :) ). Plus I was too lazy to post pics of my progress. But here are some updates!

I assembled my first Land Raider which was a lot of work. Also started on the basecoats for blue and metal:

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FSjlmkD3wUdI%2FAAAAAAAAAE4%2FFXJFQZkxcYg%2Fs400%2F2009-06-17%252023.54.50.jpg&hash=1a02f42ceeaa1dbb0b4d9f94b3560068254b5eaf)

My vindicator is almost finished. Experimented with the battle damage effect for the first time. Please tell me what you think of the painting!

I decided to extend my basing techniques, so I bought some rocks and used some more layers drybrushing the rock and moon sand.

Also some progress on my captain:

I do like how your weathering and damage came out.  What was your method?  (My vindicator is actually the next thing I'll be painting).
Title: Re: Artcore's Army Diary - Ultramarines

Well, first I painted the vindi mordian blue (foundation paint), then applied lots of boltgun metal on edges and corners. After that I did the whole model with ultra blue leaving places 'damaged' with the metal color. After that I did highlights and shades with devlan mud. The strange thing is that you put the battle damage at the same places where you'd normally do highlights.

Also, I made some actual damage to the tank & dozer blade by cutting into it with my knife and making holes with a hot needle :)

Good luck with your vindicator Algavinn.

These days I've been busy assembling and basecoating a droppod. Wow, this model takes a lot of time! Putting the thing together took me a whole afternoon. Basecoating the blue with mordian blue, doing the white parts with codex grey and 2 layers of skull white, all the boltgun metal parts... And I haven't started on the interior yet. But I really like the model. And I like painting :)

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FSlPE_14wlaI%2FAAAAAAAAAIM%2F4xZK8e1peVU%2Fs400%2F2009-07-07%252023.58.16.jpg&hash=997f53617cc2770452e78804fc266828ba491ed9)

I finished 3 Assault Marines! Put a lot of time in them and I think it was worth it. Now I have a squad of 5 painted to accompany my captain with jump pack. In my last game this unit worked really good for me against the Space Orkz. Here they are:

Decided to make some pictures of my full army. Some things are not finished yet but this gives you an idea of where my army is going.

What's not on the picture:
-5 Vanguard Veterans
-2 scouts
-2 termies
-Chaplain w/jump pack

These have to be assembled and painted.

Here's the painted ultramarines army:

Looking very nice so far!  Definitely jealous of the amount you have done.  As I ran out of paint and havent had an opportunity to order more I'm only done with one tac squad, predator, whirlwind, one dread, and a few of my sternguard.

A question, why is there a melta gun on your assault squad?

Uhmmm... I don't know... thought it was a flamer.

Anyways... finished painting a SM with plasma gun and the AoBR sergeant. Also, I read the short Assault on Black Reach novel... very nice to get into the fluff a bit. Next, I want to read the ultramarines omnibus.

Here are the marines:

Am working on the drop pod but it takes a lot of time... hopefully I'll play some games this week.

Started to paint my Chaplain w/ Jump Pack. I chose to do the armour in a 90/10 mix of black and boltgun metal. This way it's still black but with a bit metallic look. Highlights will be done with boltgun metal and silver.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FSnGOjyiqW1I%2FAAAAAAAAALg%2FKxYGCteKngg%2Fs400%2F2009-07-30%252014.13.24.jpg&hash=0191f7df5c41590f3beaaec7b488ef3bfb7bd4bb)

And I started on a Landspeeder. Though I plan to use the MM/HF variant mostly I magnetized all the weapons so I can choose which to use. The missile launchers are too expensive for me and don't fit the role I'll give them. For ML's I have a dev squad with 4 ML.

Hey guys, didn't post any pics for a long time, partly due to the fact that my phone/camera is wrecked. But I have been painting! So here some pictures  ::)

Space Hulk Terminators
I've pinned & magnetized the bases of the termies so I can use them in both SH and 40K. These guys took me a lot of time to paint, there's so much detail...
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FStILmgIi8iI%2FAAAAAAAAAUc%2F23QPYVdGPg0%2Fs800%2FHPIM1327.JPG&hash=4ae195457839f19d733a6bb38ee39648b74c4555)

WIP:

Off topic: also painted about 8 SH Genestealers:

Then the Landspeeder with magnetized weapons:

I didn't have a marine with a meltagun yet, so I made one:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FStILmMZs49I%2FAAAAAAAAAUQ%2F-QlDqurWe4s%2Fs400%2FHPIM1324.JPG&hash=df611a9e725cb3e15ee2e998378317c9d7a7ce45)

Last week I bought myself a Thunder Fire Cannon. Man, since GW is making almost everything plastic these days, I had forgotten how difficult it is to assemble these models. I'm still busy pinning the techmarine; this guy is bound to be getting out of your miniature case with all his servo harnass parts broken off.
But I managed to paint the cannon in a week:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh4.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FStILU2lujTI%2FAAAAAAAAAT4%2Fn5Myp0MGQe0%2Fs800%2FHPIM1317.JPG&hash=2996bb54c7c9f55524648335dc8a56d787bf3349)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh5.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FStILVGmeb5I%2FAAAAAAAAAT8%2Fp5KBZ0Ik9LY%2Fs800%2FHPIM1319.JPG&hash=85e8679b8e2454372067802d45ac3145aa850f76)

Other stuff I'm working on now:
-Predator: magnetized the HB's so it can also be used as my 3rd rhino.
-Assault Terminators: 3 with hammers, 2 with claws. Together with the ones from SH I've got a 7 man squad; nice for in the Landraider :)
-Chappy with terminator armour. Together with the termies he'll lead the attack from the Landraider Assault Ramp!

Also played some games these last months but I tend to lose them LOL :) Especially when it comes down to objectives I make stupid moves :) but I'll learn and I enjoy to see my guys in action.

Hope you like the painting, C&C welcome!

With some heavy weapons, plasticard and greenstuff I just made some arms for my dreadnoughts.

I used 2 autocannons from the IG heavy weapon teams:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FSxKQgvDFEaI%2FAAAAAAAAAXQ%2FRsQDFOR_O0Y%2Fs800%2FHPIM1382.jpg&hash=6925aedf8c49fe8c161c9f8b51aee02c0c9422b7)

And an assault cannon from a Landspeeder:

Another update, this time I finished a Razorback with TL-HB.

The first 3 pics are with flash and the last one without.

Very nice terminators, particularly the space hulk ones!

Thanks :) It's nice to play with and against decent painted armies he? Not so many guys with a painted army in your GW? I'd love to come by but changes are your GW is not in the Netherlands  8)

Yeah the models are very nice; but they take forever to get finished. Like you're painting squads of HQ.

I'm sure we'd all appreciate an update, Artcore. Just been reading back and looking at your amazing work. Is an army shot possible to get us all up to speed?

My only criticism is that your dreadnoughts are too awesome for stratchbuilt arms. Bitz order the parts or Forgeworld the spares. That's what I think.

They actually look pretty damn good for being scratch built, and I'm sure they wont look too bad once painted, not as distractingly different that is, but I don't think we can deny that they would look better with authentic GW/forgeworld arms.  The dreads themselves certainly look smashing.  I've been meaning to revamp mine (first 40k vehicle I think that I 'completely' finished).

Nice to know you're interested! :) I didn't update for a while, you're right. I haven't painted so much lately because music school has taken a lot of attention. But I painted some more tactical terminators and the dread arms. I'll try to make some pictures of my complete army soon. But remind me if I don't :)

Tomorrow I'm playing in a Doubles Tournament at the GW Frenzy in Amsterdam! I'll be playing with a tacsquad in a rhino, one in a razorback with captain and a dreadnought with assaultcannon/HF in a pod (total 750 points). My team mate is playing IG. We both like painting and both our forces are completely painted (except my DP which is at 70%). So that's gonna be nice on the table. Hope to play against some interesting armies.

Also, there's a FW stand on the Frenzy so I'll check out the dreadnought arms for sure. I know those scratch build ones are inferior to the official ones... but it was a nice try I guess...

As I said Art, the scratch arms look very good, forgeworld would just likely look better.  More streamlined, more details, perfect size, etc.

So, here's the major update of my Army Diary! Had to fix my camera and pose everything on the table. Actually I painted and modeled a lot since my last update but I didn't really finish a lot...

In the meanwhile I played a Doubles Tournament at the GW Frenzy in Amsterdam. It was my first tournament and I liked it very much. We didn't do bad in the games actually: one draw, one solid victory and one massacre! We had a lot of fun and we didn't screw up :) In a couple of weeks there's a 1500p tournament at my LGS in which I'll participate. Will be fun!

OK, let's start with my new purchases:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS2hWdNTio1I%2FAAAAAAAAAZ4%2FyanS1y29DJo%2Fs800%2FHPIM1420.JPG&hash=c7db6b59d45a8ad7bba1c61a8521829872d0f282)

At the Frenzy I bought these at the Forge World stand: a left arm Autocannon and the Ultramarines Brass Etch symbols. The Brass Etch stuff is amazing; so detailed and so beautiful. In a while I'll pimp up my vehicles and Terminators with these.

I tried them on a Razorback:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS2hWdflY0wI%2FAAAAAAAAAZ8%2FEk8V5YcsG6s%2Fs800%2FHPIM1422.JPG&hash=eb10aa5e8e8a56fe8bee0df1cbe8577f45c6f65c)

Also I bought a box of DA Veterans. I love these models and would like to have them in my army. Probably I'll paint them Ultramarines and use them as Sternguard Veterans.
Another DA model I bought is the SC Librarian. I was looking for a power armored SM Librarian but I liked this the best. I did my best to model the base in a nice way:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh5.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS2hWdji-vyI%2FAAAAAAAAAaE%2FL5GkDdvVqt0%2Fs800%2FHPIM1424.JPG&hash=665a343a845b89db76545598a2df07fe6df91050)

I still have to do the banner. It's probably best to pin it where the backpack and the shoulderpad touch. Otherwise it will fall off on my way to the LGS. And I have to decide which one to take: the original one or the Sicarius banner. Your opinion on this please?
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS2hWd5-uxSI%2FAAAAAAAAAaI%2FkN54MYQb2ME%2Fs800%2FHPIM1426.JPG&hash=9de310cfc639f5ff4ebdeb8b8551e1d652380ce0)

Here's a conversion I'm working on: the DCCW with Heavy Flamer. I've used this upgrade a lot on my dread but always had to proxy. Now for the tournament I wanna have it wysiwyg. So I chopped off the Stormbolter and took some CSM flamer and a 'lamp' part of a landspeeder:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh5.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS2hWvxjBA-I%2FAAAAAAAAAaM%2FojizomeCDQk%2Fs800%2FHPIM1427.JPG&hash=908bffbab98144ccb24970d0b6000603230b398a)
Did this conversion yesterday so the paint job is not finished yet...
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh5.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS2hWv1wFxaI%2FAAAAAAAAAaQ%2FPLlpxNKaX9Q%2Fs800%2FHPIM1428.JPG&hash=b62d28b73a47c1b376360b2485e9b69514662235)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS2hWwFatiLI%2FAAAAAAAAAaU%2FM5op2ianm6k%2Fs800%2FHPIM1429.JPG&hash=12340927b485753ee58adb393064abb2b643b5cc)

So here are the frequently requested army shots  8)
I only posed the painted and half painted models. What's not on the pics: TDA Chaplain, 6 Terminators, DA Vets, DA libby, LS Storm w/scouts and about 5 marines.

Some stuff is not finished (drop pod, all IC's, Assault Terminators, one dread) and some stuff not even properly started (Landraider, TFC Techmarine).
For my next tournament I intend to use the Landraider, TFC, Drop Pod and Assault Terminators so those are the models I'll be focusing on the next 3 weeks. Wish me luck! :)

C&C welcome off course!

Great stuff man.

Again, got to say I really like the individualism of your army. You're very obviously Ultramarines, only not quite (with the red) which is great. You've also managed to mesh differing colourschemes together.

I couldn't quite put my finger on it at first. It looked like some good application of a handful of Veteran models and some Space Hulk Terminators. But it's more than that. Examples:

Some of your Terminators have blue fists, others have white. Some have red rims around the helmets, some have white rims.
In your Squad with Dev sarge, some Marines have white kneepads, others have red. The Marine with the studded shoulderpad has it in gold, rather than blue.
The squad with the Captain to the fore has a Sergeant with a white trimmed pad, while the heavy bolter guy next to him has gold exhaust ports.
Each of your dreadnoughts has something different - which is just tops IMO, since they're the tombs of awesome warriors they should be that way. The trims on the main sarcophogus are different, while one has a giant red fist, the other white and blue.

I really like it. The majority of your marines are the same (bolters wise), and your colour palate revolves around red, blue, white and gold. When you mix them up, it doesn't look crazy. It lends something to your army I actually registered, but didn't know what it was.

Awesome work. My one comment would be to base that Terminator Librarian on a round base. Keep the skull step thing, by all means, but I don't like square bases, and I don't think he's legal as it's smaller than a regular termie base.

All in all, it's a beautiful army. You do realize that getting another Tac Squad and five more Assault Marines = half a battle company? ;)

Yeah, I really like to make exceptions to the normal color scheme. One reason is that it would bore me if I'd paint everything the same. Another reason is that I fell in love with Ultramarines when I read a battle report in an old White Dwarf (from 2004 maybe?). Unlike GW has today, the models they used had a lot of red, white and gold. So that's where I picked up the idea. But when I showed them to people everybody noticed how much white and red I used.
Especially with Dreadnoughts, sergeants, IC's and Terminators I like to paint them individually. Like you said, the Dreadnoughts are the Ancient Holy Warriors, so they don't need to be 10 in a row.

I did a round base with him with a coin and a magnet but the magnet let loose the other day. I'll fix it soon to make him game legal.

No, I never thought about that. I'm planning on adding a third Tactical Squad and I have 5 Vanguard Vets (yet unpainted) which I can use as Assault Marines.

Next additions are Sternguard (DA Vet models), a Landspeeder with ML's and maybe 2 more Drop Pods.

Ah, I think half a company is a good number. It's a respectable amount for Apoc games, and it adds a level of interchangability without your army getting too big and portions of it become unused (like say, having 6 tactical squad you'd never field in a normal game).

Half a company is what my Dark Angels are aiming for. I don't have your talent for painting, and my scheme isn't as varied as yours, but I think it's a good level for interchangability (as I said), fluffwise it's a good number, and the staggering amount of Marine bits and kit-bashing you can do lends a certain individualism without it getting repetitive through having too many Marines.

I think something similar to your army is my ideal. I don't have access to all the cool tanks and stuff, but I'd like a 10 strong scout squad, 3 tacs, devs and assault marines with a few spare models to make weapon swaps to units ect, and a swathe of characters for different wargear/character (chaplain, librarian or Captain) options. You do make me want to flesh out more Deathwing, though, since big units of Terminators look awesome. You also make me want to get more than one dreadnought so I can personalize them.

Definately inspiring. Looking forward to your Sternguard models. Having owned several boxes of Dark Angel robed Veterans, I want to get some ideas on how to make them look individualized and heroic (my Sergeants look ok, but I have enough bitz to make a 10 strong squad). Keep us posted.

So I've been busy with the hobby. Last weekend I played a tournament at our LGS for which I wanted to get my whole 1500p list painted: thing is, my list included the Land Raider and my Assault Terminators. Basically I've painted them to about 50% so have a painted force on the table.

Last week I did a lot of modelling. For my birthday I got a Landspeeder Typhoon as a present and I still had a Landspeeder Storm lying around from the holidays so I've put them together. Such nice models! I'm spending a bit more time to add some details from my bit box and the FW Etch Brass to get some more detail and character to the models.

Next I pinned some hard to glue stuff: the TFC's Techmarine's backpack and my DA Librarian's backpack. Also I bought Pedro Kantor and gave him Sicarius' backpack/banner.

I visited a friend who's really deep into the hobby and he helped me with some hard stuff. Also he had some things lying around that he had cast himself with resin: an altar and a whirlwind launcher! The launcher fits on my Predator or Razorback tank: IG here we come!
With the altar I've made an Ultramarines objective marker: I put on an extra book, some symbols, a ritualistic blade, an incense thing, some scrolls... I bought the 'Granite' Foundation paint to paint the stone and it's a really nice paint: drybrush codex grey on top of that for a good result.

Anyway, the pics are a few days old so no painting yet. I'll post some pics when stuff is finished.

Tonight I'll play my first big battle: 2000 points against IG. I'll bring about everything except my Vindicator, Landraider and Assault Terminators. Hope I'll finally beat this IG player! :)

So, I've been buying quite a lot of stuff lately... the LS Typhoon, the LS Storm, the Librarian, 2 boxes of DA Vets, a tactical squad, shoulder pads, Vulkan & Pedro Kantor.

Also I bought the Ultramarines Omnibus which I'm reading now and enjoying a lot! It was about time to get some more knowledge about their background.

My big project right now is my 10 men squad of Sternguard Veterans. I use the DA Vets for them but I'm trying to avoid/file away the DA icons.

I am so done with those fricking decals I decided to buy some real shoulder pads. I ordered 10 of these at Chapterhouse:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fchapterhousestudios.com%2Fwebshop%2Fcomponents%2Fcom_virtuemart%2Fshow_image_in_imgtag.php%3Ffilename%3Dresized%252FShoulder_Pads_fo_49ebca84ef9d7_90x90.jpg%26amp%3Bnewxsize%3D90%26amp%3Bnewysize%3D90%26amp%3Bfileout%3D&hash=1aecc6118f7fed9cd3faed615e12d028881b5269)

At GW I ordered 10 of these:

DA vets definitely make for some kickass looking elite models.  For my sternguard (that I don't just use from my previous edition veterans that are mostly kitted out veterans and tyrranid hunters) I made a deathwatch team so actually have a DA vet, as well as some space wolves, a blood angel, etc.

Did you specifically use the GW type modeling stones for the bases?  Or at least all the basing material they always have right next to the GW wracks.

Thanks NewHeretic! Too bad I bought/modeled/converted so much now that there's a whole bunch of models to paint... on top of the Land Raider, Terminators, Vanguards etc. that still have to be finished someday. But, tonight I'm painting again (TV on Champions League, painting my mini's :) )

Vulkan and the shoulderpads have arrived by mail :) so I'm ready to make the coolest Sternguards ever  8)

And some progress on the fluff area: I've finished reading the first book of the Ultramarines Omnibus: very nice stuff.

@ Algavinn:
No, I only use GW's modeling sand for the bases. The rocks are from 'Ziterdes' and the flat stones are from GaleForce Hobby Scenics. I bought these at a rather vague LGS but I'm sure you can find them on the net.

I'm just jealous you have the time to paint.  My vindicator has been just a days work from being finished for 6 months.

Have you considered, before you finish assembling and painting, two things about Sternguard/DA vets.

1) Have you been sure you remove all Dark Angels iconography. With the open robes its kinda hard to remove the sword from the wings, so I'd leave that, but the bolters have some distinct Dark Angels stuff on them, and the chestpieces have some iconography on some of the closed robes.

2) Your bolters need to be more awesome, I reckon. Any chance you could spruce them up with drum magazines ripped from Terminator storm bolters, or targetters, or whatever?

Yeah, I have some good time to paint now and then. It's due to the fact that I'm a student & musician so I'm flexible with my time.

Thanks for thinking with me Sheepz. I only assembled one Vet now and I did remove the DA iconography. One breastplate however has one icon that's gonna be hard to remove. Also I have to use normal back packs.
The bolters... yeah I don't know. You mean they should be cooler because of the Sternguards special ammo?

Here some pics of the first Vet, ready to paint!

Scrounge for Black Templar Bolters. The masses of chains help them look a bit more special than your average boltgun.
Title: Re: Artcore's Army Diary - Ultramarines
Post by: Sheepz on March 22, 2010, 09:29:18 AM
I was thinking specialed up boltgun for their special ammo, yeah.

That model looks great, but I do have a couple of tips for you (aside beefing out some of the other botlers)

- I find it massively difficult to paint the robes, espcially with a colour like creamy-bone, when the arms are in place. When using the DA vet fixed arms, I just blue tac them on, get the pads down and the pose right, then remove them, otherwise I end up going badly wrong when it comes to painting.

- Don't go overboard with the Vet arms. I think a couple of shooting guys is fine, buy you start to get too much repition if you use their arms repeatedly, since there are like, 3 different varients. If you want to do shooting Vets, break them up a bit with Tactical Squad arms as well. It'll give you more control over the posing, and every third guy won't have a skull on his glove, or a purity seal on his boltgun that looks strangely like the guy further down the row.

He does look fantastic though. Those pads you ordered really work with him. Can't wait to see them all done.

Thanks for all those tips and the encouragement Sheepz! I just started painting this guy and you have a good point about attaching the arms later on. Normally I hate this method because I want to play games with the mini's in the meantime but with these guys it makes a lot of sense.
For the other 9 Vets I'll see what other arms I have to avoid repetition. I'll play with this squad probably all with bolters, some with combi-flamers or combi-melta's. But a flamer or MM is also an option. Also, I'm not sure if I should give the Sergeant a PW or PF or none at all.
Title: Re: Artcore's Army Diary - Ultramarines
Post by: Sheepz on March 22, 2010, 10:15:21 PM
Yeah, getting painted to play ASAP is always an issue with me, its good, though, gives you motivation.

Re: arms and painting torsos. I find its only really a problem with the arms that already have the boltguns on them. With standard marine arms, you can leave the bolter off and do just as well, really, athough I still prefer to paint the arms separate because of the colour difference. Can't afford to make mistakes.

Make sure you get pictures up when you're done.

Finally I've finished painting something! So many WIP's it was about time to get something done.

This time my altar. Here the Chaplain of my army can perform the Rites of Battle and bless his Battle Brothers.

And I've almost finished the LSS; only have to do the highlights on the blue stuff:

DA Vet and Librarian, very WIP:

Nice work on the altar and the Storm. I was cringing at the bottom two before I read WIP.

As an aside, Artcore, this is what I was thinking when I ramble on about your bolters. It's a simply conversion, and only needs to be done for a couple of the Marines, I think, to get the feel. Anyway, it's entirely up to you, thought I'd throw it out there. This is not mine, BTW, I found it on google.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F_Gkuam2yzHhY%2FSdEbBn6p3QI%2FAAAAAAAABIY%2FNRasaVXB17U%2Fs400%2FSN850495.JPG&hash=df9c6d0ca2807c6a81ae08c270b7012ac1c472f7)

As you can see, he's added the drum magazine from a Terminator Storm Bolter, and a targetter from the Tactical Marines sprue. I think you could pull off something similar.

I like this log, reminds me of my first Ultramarines army (except better...). Good work. On the gold highlight it thinly with mithril silver or mix it with gold. The altar is nice. The exaust on the land speeder needs weathering.

Here are two techniques:
Drybrush Bestail Brown (leave 1/4 of the engine closest to the model metal)
Drybrush 3/4 of previous layer (going outwards) woth scorched brown
Drybrush 3/4 of previous layer (going outwards away from model) with chaos black

Other way:
repeat above steps with
wash devlan mud
wash badab black
drybrush chaos black

Oh do the same on the flamer too :)
Cheers, Lazuli

And, off topic, a totally different project: an old Deff Dread from a friend. A fun conversion project and a different flavor after painting a year only Ultramarines. The only blue on this one will be one of the SM helmets on the spears :)

Yesterday I received my 2nd Drop Pod and ordered the 3rd Drop Pod since Maelstrom had a nice easter discount :)

I immediately assembled the DP, leaving out the interior (chairs and what not) because this one is for my dreadnought (and I hate to paint that stuff!). Right now I'm painting it and I've decided to paint it very simple: blue and metal, no whites and reds like the other one cause it took me so much time! It's still not finished  >:( So this one will be simple but good & fast.

Also I played a very nice 2000p Battle Mission; the one where Marines have to defend one objective. Used some of my new stuff: the LSS with cc scouts, LR with Assault Terminators, 2nd drop pod. All worked very well and I won the game.

Thanks Dalaran, basically is use Mordian Blue foundation paint, then Dabab Black wash on recesses, then Ultramarine Blue. After that I add more shading with Babab or Blue wash if necessary. I finish the blue with one or two highlights mixing Ultra and Skull White.

If I'm painting a more important model like a sergeant or something I use another layer between the foundation and the Ultramarine. That's a mix of Ultra and Regal Blue to go between Mordian and Ultra.

Well I lurked in here for quite some time as I truely enjoyed watching this thread and your army progress into its current state.

Very Well Done overall.

I must say that personal favourites are:
• Autocannon Dread (I did one with both arms being a-cannons -- wicked dakka dread btw)...
• Razorback (I love removable turrets)
• Joe Marine (As the consistancy over all that infantry is incredible).

Only suggestion that I have... is to put in a few mor WIP pics for the guys that are not so adept as yourself...

Thanks for sharing all this Artcore.

ARGHHH.... you need to attack those missile tips with a little spot of green stuff. the miss-casting really brings down the model, and it would be a shame to leave it like that considering the level of the rest of the force.

please please please fill in those tips... it shouldn't take TOO long (he says) and the best thing is that you can smooth out and shape the green stuff using files if it dries and you aren't completely happy with the initial sculpting.

ARGHHH.... you need to attack those missile tips with a little spot of green stuff. the miss-casting really brings down the model, and it would be a shame to leave it like that considering the level of the rest of the force.

Yeah I know it's a miscast (didn't do it myself) but I don't mind actually. They could be 'meant to be' like that?

that sounds like the sort of justification i'd come up with. but being modellers i think other gamers will spot it. i suppose its one of those things that doesnt need to be right away, but i would definately consider tidying that up. like i said, it would be a shame not to...

As a real life Weapons Technician, I can almost Guarentee that the Cone section of the missile would be as uniform and as arodynamic as possible.... Its nothing like bullets that could of course be hollow point, as a Missile flies (has a thrust component, etc) and is not just thrown through the air (rifling helps the bullet stay on tragectory).

Funny thing is ,that I didn't even notice them earlier, as I am not realy a fan of Whirlwinds.

Not possible eh? Thought so  :-[ So that would be more fiction than science  :P

OK, it's on the to-do list. But that's a long list: finishing 15 terminators, painting a few HQ's, modeling and painting the DA Sternguards, painting 2 Drop Pods, a LS Typhoon, 15 Tactical People, finishing the vindi...  :P I bought a bit too much lately  :D

So I took a lot of pictures from finished stuff and WIP.

First, I thought it might be nice to show you my 'mobile painting desk':
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS7yihrNotYI%2FAAAAAAAAAk0%2FEA_7tTngIME%2Fs800%2FHPIM1516.JPG&hash=c08899f95cebf78b39b8422f6d24b3e8c226206c)

This is my 2nd Drop Pod. Received it friday, assembled it right away for that evening's battle, and started painting the next day. The previous DP took me ages and this one has to be faster; so less colors, just blue and metal. Still takes ages... LOL And the 3rd Pod is in the mail!  ;D
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh4.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS7yi5BUHv4I%2FAAAAAAAAAk4%2FVm1yMMGeMrY%2Fs800%2FHPIM1518.JPG&hash=ee5c00cf3a2d8c5190bf125fe5f9b65bbf50f666)
This is just Mordian Blue Foundation and Boltgun Metal.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh4.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS7yi7mmBH6I%2FAAAAAAAAAk8%2Fdpk-oypaymU%2Fs800%2FHPIM1519.JPG&hash=fe9902ff8fa57a925a1b3cf66cd375feacfa4dad)
Because I use the DP a lot for Dreadnought and because I hate to paint the 'seats' this one is empty inside.

Yesterday I went on with the DA Sternguard prototype model. After painting foundation grey, astronimican grey (also foundation) I did some shading with Blue Wash. Then I did Spacewolf Grey, then SW Grey with Skull White and finally pure White. It's hard to make good pictures of the white robes, don't know why. But I'm sure about this method to paint white. I think the shadings were a bit too dark sometimes and the top layers should be thinned down with water to make it more smooth.

The Bolter will be re-painted cause this gold sucks. What do you think? Any tips on painting white robes with blue shades?

Now on to the TFC Techmarine. This model is so sweet. But it was a b&tch to assemble. I pinned the backpack and painted it separately (I never do that). It was very satisfying to finish it and glue the backpack on after spending 6 months on my painting slate!  :)

A WIP marine: black basecoat, mordian blue foundation, black wash on recesses. Bolter is boltgun metal with the black wash (dabab or something). The base I did with Granite Foundation paint. Next steps will be Ultramarine Blue, gold, brighter red (mix of blood and crimson) and highlights for the blue.

The second Sternguard Veteran. I used a storm bolter magazine to convert the bolter and raided my bitsbox for pouches, grenades and scrolls.

Very nice modelling on the second Sternguard. I'm impressed. My one comment is his right shoulderpad (left on the picture - bolter arm) doesn't cover the joint of his shoulder adequately, and leaves some of the flat under-area showing.

The Marine bolter you have on the WIP looks fairly well done. I'd think about doing the casing, if the rest of your models have it, but otherwise that's very nice work. I assume on the DA Sternguard 1, and the WIP Marine, both models are going to be cleaned up and have a bit more depth to them? They look a little underwhelming compared to your other work.

As far as white robes go, I don't know. I imagine it'd be very difficult to do right. I have a tough enough time doing bleached bone robes. Alternatively, you could try a number of 'bone robe' methods and highlight to white.

I know... it sucks right? I could jank the arm off and cut away some plastic. But I don't know if it's going to be 'weired' when it's properly painted.

Yeah, both are WIP. No ultramarine blue yet, no details. For this army I didn't paint the bolter casings but for the Sternguard I think I will. Not sure how though. I want their bolters to look special because of their ammo; maybe I could try black bolters with gold ammo?

I really wanna go for the bluewhite but I figure next guy will be better. Just need more subtle shading and 'milkier' white layers.

You are once again depressing me with the amount of work you have done!!  ;D

Seriously though, this army must be getting HUGE now, and it's looking fantastic. I especially love your vehicles, which is something my Ultras are in desperate need of!

And I'm glad you are painting up a land Speeder Storm, it's one of my favourite models but I haven't got around to getting one yet, so I will be watching your's whilst feeling guilty about not giving my marines any love.....

Thanks Chris. Yeah it's getting quite big now. I've been playing some 2000pts battles lately and usually there's just a few WIPs on the table: very nice  :D

I don't think golden ammo lends itself to the army, to be honest. Ammo is functional, never decorative. I think black or deep red bolter casings, with the rest in that awesome gunmetal colour you've got, as a personal taste. You can tell they're Sternguard all-ready with the robes and ornamental pads and stuff. Try to customize your bolters a bit more, if you think they're running out of uniqueness. Not every bolter has to follow the one on Sternguard model #2, but try other things. Maybe a bolter with two barrels, one on top of the other? Or a bolter with just the drum magazine. Or a Chaos bolter (iconography filed off) that has the draped ammo coming off it? Or just targetters? Or the BT bolters that are chained to the Marines arms.

If you're thinking of putting combi weapons in there as well, you shouldn't have too much work to do. I really advise against golden guns, though.

Yes, that's a good idea. I'll go for metal with deep red casings. Thanks.

Thanks a lot Raktra. You see a lot of young kids with badly painted Ultra's out there; just because that's the color on the box  :P

Dedication is key yes. Still I wish I had more of it for all the other stuff  :D

Almost two weeks with no update, Artcore. The people demand Space Marines. The people demand progress!

On a more serious note, it'd be good to see how those Sternguard of yours are coming along. They're very unique, and even with the special ordered bits I think you've achieved a good standard of model, easily recognizeable for what it is, and with less of the cost than the metals. Am I right?

Nice to hear you're looking forward to my progress Sheepz! I'm a bit busy composing and rehearsing music at the moment.

But I still paint a bit at the end of the day. I almost finished my 2nd Drop Pod with 'battle damage' and I worked a bit on the 1st Sternguard. Today I felt a sudden urge to play a list with 3 Drop Pods and finished Sternguard Veterans in Robes :) So I'll try to work on them this weekend and I'll try to post pics.

Thanks. Don't know how the costs are precisely but I guess they come out the same as the metal ones money wise. The main advantages for me are that they're going to be unique and heavily customized, and I can give them the weapons I want them to bring to the battlefield.

Hope to show some progress soon.

BTW: I repainted the bolter, instead of gold I've used deep red and it works much better. Thanks for the advice!

Okay this is gonna be a big update  ::)

Joe Marine; almost finished.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh4.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS9NsWA6kHwI%2FAAAAAAAAAo4%2F3xYc7_7Wcg8%2Fs400%2FHPIM1557.JPG&hash=cef1ff3ce8546db814df76747d3d167f4a27a5b2)

I've never really painted power weapons like they're special or anything. So I gave it a try:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS9NsRwzfM9I%2FAAAAAAAAAo0%2F6ibd_70T-Fk%2Fs400%2FHPIM1559.JPG&hash=a308df2f466ce7c13ca01ffaf50b6b9ec9af4bd9)
And applied to a Terminator Sergeant:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS9NsbPxrNYI%2FAAAAAAAAAo8%2FLIU0ci1rk2I%2Fs800%2FHPIM1560.JPG&hash=ab00e15ff2407fa197700bef5df74b15124b3645)

Then the Sternguards. These guys take me ages to assemble; diving very deep into the bits box and all left over sprues to use all nice parts I have :)

This dude has a combi-melta and some pouches for the special ammo:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS9NsgIpnSzI%2FAAAAAAAAApA%2FYKOtjEI0GKE%2Fs400%2FHPIM1561.JPG&hash=ce4269afa9c2a1d17be8ff1c25de1d0eced8eedc)

And this is the Sergeant with Power Fist and Bolt Gun. The head is from Captain Sicarius:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh3.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS9Ns4lwJPrI%2FAAAAAAAAApM%2FfvITywCRONY%2Fs800%2FHPIM1566.JPG&hash=99b27602f4b858c9db0af21ffbedb4004feb4bcd)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh4.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS9NtA3Xl-VI%2FAAAAAAAAApQ%2FbMuO6IebYdY%2Fs400%2FHPIM1567.JPG&hash=da25a1ec06b725a348c5106bd90c4072bd9ab27b)

And I need some help; I want to replace the banner's skull by one of these symbols:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh6.ggpht.com%2F_feyxDO8Zs8k%2FS9NtEraooMI%2FAAAAAAAAApU%2FNCmM1tAnYn8%2Fs400%2FHPIM1569.JPG&hash=9aff12fd7c52f82e17307947a30710f63801b883)
Any advice on which to use?

WIP Sternguard #1 with red Bolter casing:

First off, its about time.

Great work as usual, Artcore. Have you adopted the same basing method for all your Marines? I thought it was just the Sternguard but Joe Marine makes me think again.

Also, powersword looks good. What helped me out was this http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6438 (http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6438) from Heresy Online, but you need to modify it to suit your colours and stuff. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Digging the combi-melta dude. He looks really heroic and Ultramariney with his swept back hair and iconography.

Good use of the head on that Sergeant, ties it back into the rest of your army nicely. You want them looking elite, but not too different. The Greek/Roman style helmet brings it together.

I like the red on the bolter. Really think you should drill your barrels, though :P. Maybe, if you're stuck for bolter inspiration beyond the targetters and drum magazines, you could finely do some irregular lines in white paint on the large empty parts of the casing for writing - scriptures and litanies and other Marine stuff. Just a thought, which might not even look right. I'm just thinking about the model that's painted. He lost the DA iconography and its now looking a bit flat. Not bad, really, but its a thought.

On the banner, if you can separate the U symbol from its backing, it'd look better than set into that square of plastic, I reckon. Mounting them will be tricky. I'd take a very small pin vice to it - check the width of the drill bit against the metal you're gonna insert - and decapitate the skull. Drill straight down into the pole, and then up into the icon you select (not very deep, mind). I manage to pin my DA swords (from the Ravenwing and Veteran sprue - the big swords) into the hands of Tactical Marines using this method. You just have to be careful with it.

And having typed all that, I realized you're only asking for an opinion of which to use :P. If you can hollow out the Ultramarine symbol from that blocky background its set in (personal preference), then I'd go with that. Otherwise I'd go with the eagle. I think the blocky square thing detracts from the symbol otherwise.

Sorry for not updating for months but I didn't paint or play anything these months.

So now the work is done the urge to paint is slowly growing back :) Just finished the Joe Marine so I wanted to show you some proof I'm still alive:

I'm also busy to paint the first 4 DA Sternguards; hope to show some progress soon.

Cheers!

Good result with your music, mate. I'd be very pleased with that.

Glad to know you're not dead, and I'm very much looking forward to those Sternguard conversions you've done. Another army group shot would be great, just to get a feel from where you're at. I remember the first time you started posting pictures of your army, and its come on phenominally since then.

Cheers!

Hey guys, here's a post just to let you know I'm alive again. My appetite for the hobby was away for some time and then I went 3 months to Central America for some serious backpacking :) That was an awesome trip  8)

Back on topic. Last weekend I played my first game in 6 months and it wasn't bad. Was playing against a nice game buddy who plays Tau; the most annoying army ever  >:( My dice were very out of shape (failed so many power and terminator armor saves) but the game was very nice and ended in a draw. I killed all his troops and blocked his objective with my destroyable Landraider but then he contested my objective.

But it got me back into the painting and the forum. In the game I used my unpainted Ironclad for the first time, replacing my normal MM/HF dread, in a Drop Pod. AV13 is awesome! So I started modeling him (FW Ultra symbols on banner and some other spots) and started painting:

Yeah, blue it is. In the meanwhile I was starting a High Elf army; I painted half of the WHF starter box. But it wasn't blue enough for me ;) But serious, don't know if I'll paint much more Marines or do the Elves seriously.

Hi there  8)
This week I did some painting again! Yes, I've finished my Ironclad Dreadnought. And finally I've finished the first 4 Sternguards In Dresses. These guys have been on my painting table so long...

But first the file cabinet for my mini's:

The thing was full pretty quickly. Guess I have more mini's than I thought.

So here's the Ironclad:

Hi here's a quick update on my progress on my ever expanding Ultramarines force.

I've got another Rhino/Razorback which I'm starting to paint:

And I really wanna finish these badass Terminators. They're almost done, just need to hightlight the blue and some other stuff:

And I started painting the next 3 Sternguard Vets:

And, as a side project, I'm painting some Elves:

Even though the weight would probably snap it's spine, I'd love to see a captain riding that bird  (biker legs, captains torso, long billowing cape).  If I had the time I'd put it together, especially as I have a half drop pod/fast deploy and half artillery marine army, I think it'd be fitting.  But I also don't use a captain :p  I might have to make one up just for display purposes though.  The bird does look very clean, what methods and colours did you use?

A little while attacking ebay and I've now bought one of those birds and most of the bits to put together a flying HQ.  Now just to find a good chest to use for him, and decide what kind of HQ to make out of him.  Might just make my own rules, a hit and run jump pack HQ with deep strike and a strong charge.  Thanks for the inspiration artcore :D

??? That's a pretty radical idea!!!  :o I'd like to see that happening: please send me some pictures of your conversion.

Yeah my High Elves are going to be very white, clean and supernatural. That's why I wanted the bird to be very white.
After black basecoat I used Graveyard Earth, then Bleached bone. On this I put a layer of black wash for the shading. Then again Bone in a drybrush to keep the shades. After that I drybrushed with Bone mixing with White. I'll add another 'almost pure white' highlight.

Man I really do need to get some good washing inks.  I'll use some watered down paints, but this doesn't always get the effects I want (kickass for Eldar cloaks though and some psyker/power weapons).  I'll have to find some way to do something equivalent with my bird.  Time for a paint order anyway!

For me, Dhabab Black Wash is a real winner  8) I use it on all my Ultra's metal parts, on the armour, shoulder plates. Actually I use it to 'blackline' about anything: small black lines that seperate the different colours, just like how comics are drawn  :D

Yes! I've been painting again!

This Rhino/Razorback was 80% painted for some time so I finished it in the last 2 days. I already have 2 rhino's and a razorback so this one can be transformed into both.

On this one I've experimented a lot more on battle damage and shading; pretty satisfied with the result.

Rhino:

Mech Madness:

Also I'm working on a Typhoon Landspeeder:

Hope to show you some finished Assault Terminators soon.

Hi ArtCore!
I've just looked over your blog. And not to offend, but first I thought they was pretty boring and didn't seem so good.
But after some time, I realized that your minis are really really nice! :D
You've got a really good blue scheme and nice chipping.
I especially like your combination of colours that makes your Ultramarines unique, and I also like to see how much you've evolved through the blog. I was so wrong about your marines, sorry for that, keep up the good work! :)

@Styranimon Yeah those first marines were not so good  >:( took me some time to get into it. My painting experience before this army was purely fantasy, so I had to develop an idea on how to paint sci-fi models and develop the Ultramarines paint scheme.

Just finished 2 more Assault Marines, now with shield and hammer. Will post some pics later.

Hey Artcore,

I've not been around much the last few months but wanted to say that you have got loads done, and you can really see how much this army has developed over time.

I really like the accent colours on the vehicles too, reminds me of 2nd edition Ultras without being retro if you know what I mean?

Vulkan has an Ultramarine symbol now:

Just looked through this thread and your work is simply amazing!
Normally I hate Ultramarines with a passion, but these have changed my mine. :P

Sorry. I'm totally not painting right now. Didn't even look at the forum for months.

Maybe I'll start a Chaos SM army with the Dark Vengeance box. But I don't know...

Yeah I'm intending on making a small DA combat patrol army (the vengeance box plus a veteran robed squad of fallen hunters), and a few chaos kill teams...but I dont have the time to paint anything and wont for 7 months minimum.
