Title: First Minis of 2010: Blood Angels Army Blog
Post by: GlauG on June 9, 2010, 08:08:08 AM
EDIT:  This ended up growing into a blog for my BA army in general.  For stuff other than the Librarian Dreads, skip a page. :)

So, I've been busy with uni, and hurt my wrists, so I've not done any mini painting literally all year, but now my exams are over and my wrists are  a bit better, so I thought I'd give myself a challenge; paint a new 40k army before I hopefully leave for Japan at the end of the summer.  I started on GW stuff with "Angels of Death" back in the mid-90's, and usually play Dark Angels, but I've got an old Blood Angels army in need of renovating, so I thought I'd resurrect them with the new codex.  Then I read about Furioso Dreadnought Librarians, and decided they'd be a great piece to model...  this is the result.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg683.imageshack.us%2Fimg683%2F1368%2Fp1000544np.th.jpg&hash=168bc1da6d0e784aee3817100beab641dac60bdd) (http://"http://img683.imageshack.us/i/p1000544np.jpg/")

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg94.imageshack.us%2Fimg94%2F3070%2Fp1000549nn.th.jpg&hash=9ffa2638b5e3249f9a9679662261dee40934916e) (http://"http://img94.imageshack.us/i/p1000549nn.jpg/")

For what it's worth, this is my first real attempt at NMM and object-source lighting. I flirted with both for my GD entry last year, but totally sucked at them both.   Following some feedback elsewhere, it became the following;

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg708.imageshack.us%2Fimg708%2F5734%2Fp10005549733322.jpg&hash=ba6628d2cbda6a8a0348e92356a35715973ae564) (http://img708.imageshack.us/i/p10005549733322.jpg/)

But now I feel like I've overdone the OSL, and I'm not very happy with it. :(

On the conversion side, it's got fully articulated shoulders with about 4 points of articulation each, and the hand is from a 1/100 MG God Gundam model. :)

The painting is great and the blade is cool, but I'm not so sure about the hand.  It just doesn't look very 40kish. ???

Damn you! I wanted to win the "Guess that Gundam" game ;D

I like it, a lot. Though admittedly, the force weapon looks unwieldy. Great paintjob.

it looks great, but to be honest i feel as if both arms are a tid too big. if you look at any dreadnoughts arms, they're all surprisingly (to me, at least) small, especially the chainfist arms, they're so small! the items you have here look great, but in practice are really quite different to all the other models.  At first i felt like the gundam hand was a staff, which i think would really lay into the feel of a librarian dreadnought- and that's a fairly easy conversion for you to stick it on a pole, close a normal powerfist's fingers around it, and it would give you what you want while at the same time maintaining the idea of the mini.

The blade, as stated previously, is a bit too big for the model, back to the chainfist reference.  it's only about a third the siz of the blade you have there.  Perhaps cut it down to half the size it is now, and it would be more accurate to what the other dread's have? Just a suggestion, because I love the blade now, it just doesn't fit with any other dread's there are ^.^

Could you get other pictures from different angles? It would help incredibly with judging it.
From this angle we can't tell much about the hand.

Painted very well though.  :P

Thanks a lot guys :)

Newheretic - Yeah, there were other hands which were slightly more 40k-looking, but at the end of the day it's the right colour and I like it, so it'll do. :)

Kabal, Raktra, the arms are deliberately a bit oversized...  Kinda.  I couldn't not make the fist arm huge and use the parts I wanted, so I added the "Buster Sword" Force Weapon to balance it out aesthetically.  The thing's bigger than a Terminator!

Jakinder, your wish is my command :)  I stripped back a little of the light, and took some photos from other angles so you can get a better look.  I just need to sit down and work on the NMM, as well as the parts that aren't being glared upon by the hand.

However, more importantly, my fledgling Blood Angels had a great day for their first game; allied with some Guard against Imperial Fists and a friend's counts-as-Mechanicus Space Marines, and even better, my Furioso Libby basically destroyed 3 times his own points value.  1 Dread, 2 Venerable Dreads, and one Ironclad all fell before him, exploded by the God Finger. :P  Unfortunately he was felled by Pedro Kantor while squishing him in return.  At any rate, I realised that the only thing better than one cool model is two of them, so I took the spare parts from the Ven. Dread kit and began to assemble his brother!

Aside from the Ven Dread bits, he's made up from a Sanguinary Guard head, random Marine tank crew torso, a Rhino Cupola, misc bits from the Imperial Sector building pack, the H/K missile launcher from the Ironclad Dread, and lots of styrene sheet, tube, metal wire, and WAVE/Kotobukiya option parts.  I'm surprised at how fast he's come along (I only started on Thursday night), but basically I only have to attach the power plant (the grey piece lying separate) and some spare arms I'll be modding, as well as some cables.  Not sure about what to do with the arms yet, maybe this time paint him using a glowing sword or something.    And might not use a Gundam hand this time...

Yea, while I like the hand's color and all, but the fingers are in a weird position  :P
I feel like he's a dreadnought out of star trek  ::)

But while thats not too big an issue, realy.  Just feel like the sword is too big xD

Dont really like it at all. The blade and hand make an already unrealistic model look even moreso and I really think you overdid the whole "light as different paint colors" effect.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is no such thing as 'too big' a weapon  ;)

Kasrkin43 - for what it's worth, we're talking about a genetically enhanced superhuman, entombed within a ripoff of the badguy from Robocop 2, who also has Psychic Powers.  Realism went out the door a while ago. :)  I do agree about overdoing the OSL though.  :/

As for the hand, I have a couple of alternative hands in slightly different poses I'll take snaps of to compare.  Yes, all made of clear "glowing" plastic. :P

I think it looks perfect.
Really, who wants to see the same old dread in every battle? This shakes things up.

Please make the second one as ridiculous.

Post by: GlauG on June 12, 2010, 08:59:40 PM
Jakinder - Thanks!  The next one will be a bit different, but similar.  It'll be holding a staff as long as a tank, if that's ridiculous enough for you. :)

Okay, found an alternative hand for the first Dread, please try and ignore the colour as best you can and tell me if the shape is any better. :P  Besides that, did some work on the scratchbuilt one, added piston detail and cables to the legs, basically finished up the torso, just need to build the arms and I'm done!

Interesting, several other hand-naysayers agree with you, Kabal. :)  Unfortunately I'll have to do one up in orange if I want to use it permanently, which is a bit of a pain.

Well, I finally got round to doing the arms, was distracted by Terminator Librarians and someone giving me something like £200 of Grey Knights and other assorted minis.

They're a bit longer than I'd have liked, but it gives him this whole Big-O feel, which looks good next to Brother-Librarian God Gundam in my mind. :)  I've since stuck the winged blooddrop shoulder pad bits from the Death Company sprue on his forearms.

What a manly model. I really feel that a staff won't be adequate though. He is in a pose that needs more.

But that's just my opinion.

Love the work, GlauG.

For what it's worth, he's actually pretty posable still. :)  Not glued anything in place, wasn't going to till the staff was done...  I'll probably have it holding the staff in the right hand.  But thanks!

Okay, this has now turned into a general update thread for my BA collection, who I'm experimenting with army builds for...

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg121.imageshack.us%2Fimg121%2F8662%2Fp10006078746498.jpg&hash=fcfe75b01032f4c5f535c7f6dadbc9a9308dab12) (http://img121.imageshack.us/i/p10006078746498.jpg/)

That's everyone so far.  The astute among you will notice that only the Sanguinary Priest and one of the Dreads are even near finished...

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg686.imageshack.us%2Fimg686%2F6960%2Fp10006088755191.jpg&hash=6c2bc4b560e460b9c1cdf98ad123d4a59f674008) (http://img686.imageshack.us/i/p10006088755191.jpg/)

Close up on the two Librarian Dreads.  The Force Staff is a WIP.

Both Dante and Lemartes have had their metal jump packs replaced with plastic ones... I also like Dante having the Sanguinary Guard one, as they share so much visually.  I'm experimenting with NMM on the Sang Guard, but it's slow and painful going...

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg121.imageshack.us%2Fimg121%2F2204%2Fp10006138795450.jpg&hash=eb78f970e7d82db095fb784a72f942de379286c2) (http://img121.imageshack.us/i/p10006138795450.jpg/)

Assault Squad + Sanguinary Priest.

2E Librarian Termie with the arms from the current model...  long story short, a friend had both left over after a conversion, and since I'd severed the left arm for him, he offered it to me.

Other stuff I've got in the works are some Scouts (who aren't even prepped for spray), another Furioso Libby Dread, and these guys;

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg9.imageshack.us%2Fimg9%2F6610%2Fp10006158836518.jpg&hash=ad9b0fdc8aa486edd7cd6d99cfbf7c3f1fda0eb3) (http://img9.imageshack.us/i/p10006158836518.jpg/)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg690.imageshack.us%2Fimg690%2F299%2Fp10006168846365.jpg&hash=7adc070ee29f578a356ea107915e1ae4f2c9f128) (http://img690.imageshack.us/i/p10006168846365.jpg/)

I tried a game with a very silly 1500pt list involving 3 Furioso Libby Dreads, A Stormraven, 2 regular Dreads for fire support, Scouts, Death Company, led by Mephiston!  They destroyed my friend's similarly experimental 9 Landspeeder Vulkan list, which was amusing.  The Stormraven's based on the now-popular "Horn Pattern" custom, but I'll be doing a lot of things in my own way, particularly the rear doors/grapples.

YEAH!!! YOU LISTENED TO ME!!! Unless of course that was your original plan...
You made it so the dread held the staff with both hands. It looks so beautiful.
Awesome job GlauG.

As for the Sanguinary guard, do they need their wings to be painted?
Title: Re: First Minis of 2010: Blood Angels Army Blog
Post by: GlauG on June 30, 2010, 05:49:31 AM
It wasn't the original plan, but the more I worked on it the more I realised I liked it. :)  I currently have it posed so that it's holding the spiked end of the staff kinda like a spear about to stab down into something, two-handed...  And thankyou!

EDIT:  What do you mean about the Sanguinary Guard wings, btw?  They're just drybrushed so far, needs a lot more work.

Stormraven takes shape:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg94.imageshack.us%2Fimg94%2F7259%2Fp10006180738555.jpg&hash=54af0f63a1aec55b31f4d6b3102de76c411d411e) (http://img94.imageshack.us/i/p10006180738555.jpg/)

And with weapons:

And about 80% done:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg534.imageshack.us%2Fimg534%2F156%2Fp10006240780199.jpg&hash=866bbeb51a873145cac261be543bc22aa380d1de) (http://img534.imageshack.us/i/p10006240780199.jpg/)

You can see where it's differing from the "Horn" Pattern one, I didn't feel a need to extend the engine covers for one thing, I prefer the smaller fins at the front, and I'm mounting the weapons in totally different places...  The Assault Cannon is magnetised btw, so if I feel a need for Twin Lascannons or whatever I can switch them out, while the HB is the standard Marine Turret size, coming from a Planetstrike gun base, with Immolator Heavy Bolters and some plasticard/rod and can also be switched out for whatever.

So, I get the second most important set of university results I'll ever get sometime later today, which meant I couldn't sleep last night.  But, on the upside, this means I got some modelling time in;

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg820.imageshack.us%2Fimg820%2F9800%2Fp10006310550877.jpg&hash=45645dfdb575934020fb0795b94f32a122c2377e) (http://img820.imageshack.us/i/p10006310550877.jpg/)

Someone down my local GW shop gave me a land raider minus sponsons, weapons and top hull plate in exchange for a pint. :D  One order of bitz and a rummage through my box later, and my BA Godhammer was born.  Now I just need to make my two Crusader/Redeemers...

Stormraven got a lot of love, too;

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg820.imageshack.us%2Fimg820%2F1986%2Fp10006300536665.jpg&hash=e1c9dd604eb0b3d188a5d800c4a788cb92744c10) (http://img820.imageshack.us/i/p10006300536665.jpg/)

These are the only doors which don't open.  I just honestly couldn't be bothered to cut the hole in the hull, add hinges, magnetise it to keep shut, etc etc...

Now, here's the fun part; the Magna-clamps.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg820.imageshack.us%2Fimg820%2F4357%2Fp10006370521950.jpg&hash=32977a1b48329888f3ee39fcc1fdc0524f103583) (http://img820.imageshack.us/i/p10006370521950.jpg/)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg820.imageshack.us%2Fimg820%2F9126%2Fp10006330511577.jpg&hash=f82156801a2aecb701896800a7fd1a9b77009f9b) (http://img820.imageshack.us/i/p10006330511577.jpg/)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg824.imageshack.us%2Fimg824%2F4817%2Fp10006340303145.jpg&hash=ab439ec631e79f4ac5704fb41cf017671a0225ab) (http://img824.imageshack.us/i/p10006340303145.jpg/)

And of course, me being me, they actually ARE magnetic. As are my Dreads.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg25.imageshack.us%2Fimg25%2F8031%2Fp10006409638367.jpg&hash=f996af9f05d6678862bc0debeecc9a2fb201dd7e) (http://img25.imageshack.us/i/p10006409638367.jpg/)

More impressive when you realise he has lead-based pewter legs from my old 1990's metal Dreadnought...

I just need to get off my butt and blend the hatches into the rear of the hull more when they're "down", and the assembly is totally finished!  Unless you count all the weapon options.  Which I plan on now making, after realising that mech armies laugh at Heavy Bolter/Assault Cannon combos.

two things;

Firstly, what results, and then given how late you respond, how favorable were they?

Secondly, you have far too many dreadnoughts (although my brother has 4 and my dad has another one so i can't really talk xD)

Kabal -

My second year uni results, which determine whether or not I get to go on my year abroad study at the end of the summer.  Problem is, the date we were given was wrong; it's the 12th, not the 2nd. -_-;  Aaaargh!

Second, I've got like.... 11, a lot of them very recently!  >_>;  3 Metal ones (the "Smurf" with AC/CCW, BA with MM/CCW, and DA with TLC/ML, but the last one's missing the weapons), 2 plastic DA ones with TLC/CCW, The two Furioso Librarians I've already made, I got another plastic dread from a friend who gave me his whole 40k collection (which also included the metal smurfdread), a friend from my local GW gave me another last night, got another one from someone else down there, and I have another... 2 plastic ones on top of that, and a set of Space Crusade Dread legs/lower torso somewhere I might make into my third Furioso.  So actually nearly 13.

...Okay, you're right, too many.  I just spent ages fitting them with magnets for the grapple, too...  But the best bit is I can technically field ALL of them with my BA army if some of them stand in for Death Company. >_>;

Hmm.  I'm not getting a lot done fast at the moment, since I'm preparing to move...  But I really want my BA done before I do (since I've heard that there are more 40k players in Kansai than when I was last there), so I'm pressing on!

Poked at my Sanguinary Guard, too.  Want to flat out things like their shoulderpads and swords to get a sese of the whole mini for the NMM armour.

Okay, I've been busy with things that aren't modelling today (since it's double XP weekend on War For Cybertron.  >_> ) but I did take some time out to build my two Crusader/Redeemers.  There are magnets behind the front tracks, which let the frag launchers pop off so I can swap out the sponsons for Godhammer canons if I feel like it...  The sponsons are also magnetised so I can switch them out with the doors...  I like the look better with the sponsons to the rear, but Flamestorm cannons and Hurrican Bolters are both much better off with the extra inch and a half or whatever of range. :(  So this way I can play with them forward and keep them at the rear for Godhammer mode or display. :P  Similarly the hatches up top are magnetised to allow for swapping of storm bolters, heavy flamers, etc etc.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg38.imageshack.us%2Fimg38%2F6172%2Fp10006513167660.jpg&hash=a345c7f981a1ae0b7cf296974537cf7983b047a2) (http://img38.imageshack.us/i/p10006513167660.jpg/)

Nothing new to the Stormraven, but I took a few pics in strong daylight to help me with reference for NMM on the engines and stuff later, which was my partner's idea. :D

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg38.imageshack.us%2Fimg38%2F3973%2Fp10006463195577.jpg&hash=9773b1a3a657b84c46774e2da47344c4fef07754) (http://img38.imageshack.us/i/p10006463195577.jpg/)

Hopefully I'll spray the basecoat on the tanks and the Stormie tomorrow.

Okay, I've spent a few hours airbrushing all this crap thanks to chunky bits in my Mechrite red gumming up the works of my airbrush, but I wanted to post it before grabbing sleep.  :D

This is practically an entire army in and of itself... If only the JP Marines didn't have the packs, it'd probably be legal at around what, 2000?

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg820.imageshack.us%2Fimg820%2F8805%2Fp10006522483464.jpg&hash=4e4a147eecbbc9a99c35814b3068581bd3b4fa03) (http://img820.imageshack.us/i/p10006522483464.jpg/)

Furioso Libby gets some love too, finally.  He's being sprayed blue as that's the base coat for my Librarian Dreads.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg64.imageshack.us%2Fimg64%2F5581%2Fp10006532498777.jpg&hash=7f4c69764c8f61f0fc1256d9c7e3c5b682d54a40) (http://img64.imageshack.us/i/p10006532498777.jpg/)

And Grandpa Libby gets a base. :D  Not finished painting him yet, but I feel much better about the model now.  Every base in my army will be modelled after this one.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg824.imageshack.us%2Fimg824%2F1623%2Fp10006542511445.jpg&hash=661559bebd4f4265a6c6311f4ac26662d7480849) (http://img824.imageshack.us/i/p10006542511445.jpg/)

Mephiston, TTAC Dread, ye olde metal BA Dread, Land Raider #1.

I feel a bit like like I'm posting at myself, I think this will be 6 replies by me...

So, today I did washes and highlights on 30 Assault Marines, 3 Land Raiders, a Stormraven, 2 Dreadnoughts, and Mephiston...  I'm kinda desperate to get a good selection of minis painted before I move to Japan, since I know I'll be able to get some gaming out there, but I doubt I'll be able to afford to pick up a good selection of paints.

So, here's most of that:

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg94.imageshack.us%2Fimg94%2F4586%2Fp10006710414906.jpg&hash=eb6485066ad9ee0f9b4be44ce4276c2ab5700e6e) (http://img94.imageshack.us/i/p10006710414906.jpg/)

As an aside, I hate painting yellow, and the yellow BA Assault Marine heads are starting to bug me. >_>;  Kinda pleased with how they've come out though.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg824.imageshack.us%2Fimg824%2F7373%2Fp10006701581259.jpg&hash=32a87ac9e863d6f785ac41875995002e422804a7) (http://img824.imageshack.us/i/p10006701581259.jpg/)

Stormraven, with the first inklings of some weathering. :D

I hate painting yellow heads as well =(

What method do you use to get yellow on the assault marines heads? I've been putting Iyanden darksun down then putting sunburst yellow down with a wash of gryphonn sepia.

All your models look really cool. It looks as though you have a looooot of stuff in order to build your army from. How do you have room for it all?
Title: Re: First Minis of 2010: Blood Angels Army Blog
Post by: GlauG on July 6, 2010, 09:20:39 PM
Slinky - You have the greatest avatar ever man. :D

I did a thin layer of Iyanden Darksun mixed with the Dark Flesh/orange mix I'd been highlighting everyone with, and then drybrushed pure Iyanden Darksun before washing with Gryphonne Sepia.  I'm thinking a highlight of Bleached Bone or Rotting Flesh or Deneb Stone + Iyanden, but haven't decided yet.  I might do those the slow and painful way rather than drybrushing, too...  Lately I've found that I don't like using "stock" GW colours for highlighting or shading other colours, I prefer to mix the base up or down a shade to keep some kind of continuity.  The exceptions are when I want high contrast for highlighting blacks, or NMM.

As for the second question... ahahaha.  I don't have a lot of room at all, especially considering my Transformers collection on top of my minis and Gundam models (I realised the flat had kinda reached critical mass as I just got a Grand Max...  Which I have nowhere to store). ^^;  I'm actually building a shed at my parents' place to store all my stuff while I'm off in Japan as there's not enough space in my old room there.  If my partner and current flatmate weren't also gamers/modellers, I'm sure they'd kill me (the Battle Sisters in the background of some of the pics are my partner's, for example).  As it stands, we just try not to trip over each others' minis!  I do have a lot of stuff though... I went through a massive buying spree on ebay last summer with the intention of stripping, repainting, and selling stuff, but never got round to it, so I have a LOT of raw materials, especially Marines.  That, and I seem to have a lucky gift of people giving me stuff I need for conversions if I ask nicely...  I just owe a lot of people a lot of drinks at this point. ;) In the space of one week, two separate people gave me a Baneblade and a Daemonhunters Army respectively, both insisting that I was doing THEM a favour, not the other way round... It's only that kind of stuff happening that means I can afford to keep this hobby up, actually...

Okay, ramble over!  As an aside, I'm considering the following build for an army;

Astorath (who I have but haven't painted yet)
10 man  Assault Squad in LR, Inferno Pistols X2, Sgt Power Weapon
7 man Assault Squad with JP X2, one inferno pistol each, one Sgt with PW, one with Twin Lightning Claws
Stormraven, Las and Multi-meltas
Death Company, 5 man
DC Dread.

Comes out at around 1500, ad I do have all the minis now, besides needing to model some right Dread CCW arms.

Oh, and does anyone have any ideas about how to keep plastic arms on metal torsos?  I used to just glue them back in the day, but that doesn't cut it anymore and I keep breaking drills on my old metal Death Company minis trying to pin them...

if you'r having a lot of problems just using some green stuff in between works wonders- glue the greenstuff to both sides and there you go.  The nice thing is that if it falls off in a couple of months, then you can jst scrape the greenstuff off and make the direct bond glue- idk why it works but it does O.o

Also, I still hate painting Yellow. I also feel like a moron for trying to paint green eyes on yellow helmets...  How the hell did I think that was going to end well?  The yellow won't cover to touch up and my attempts to wipe it away smeared everything on a few helmets green.  -_-  Though for all that, my live-in Imperial Fists player is aparrently jealous of how it turned out.

The bad news is that leaving them near an open window meant that the magnets shrank in the cold wind and broke off of the parts they were glued to...  Argh.  I don't have a drill big enough for my largest magnets to be mounted into something.  I'll have to putty them back into place.

is that a sargeant with a single LC i see? O.o his other arm is obscured by the other guy.. ok.. i had to zoom to make sure, but now i'm feeling much better.  I was about to slap you and say why spend extra for a single LC.. blah blah blah.

The yellow looks really good, but i would think black or light blue eyes would do better in this situation than green.. lol

Oh, it's definitely a pair. :)  Since I have something like 40-50 JP Assault Marines total I want to give myself a fun range of equipment between them, and TLC was first on the list after the obligatory Power Weapon Sgt.  As for the eyes, I want the eyes to be the same on everyone, and my few painted old minis, as well as my Sang Priest, have sort of blue-green eyes, so my Assault Marines are stuck with them too, silly helmets and all.  Might make an exception for Death Company...

Thanks. :D  I'll take some pics when I get the chance, but I basically just drilled holes into his backpack mount and then into the wings to pin them in place.  I had to mod the backpack a bit to make it fit though.

And if you're serious about that last bit, drop me a PM. :)

Okay, ask and ye shall receive. :)

Mephiston's wings are just pinned above the backpack mount, though the backpack vents had to be cut off and the connecting piece removed inn order for it all to fit.  Similarly, Dante's backpack mount wouldn't take the wings, so I just pinned them into the SG JP instead.

The downside is, in daylight Dante looks like ass.  Argh.  Maybe I should give up on this NMM stuff and just strip them and spray them Alclad Chrome. -_-;

And since I had some good light for once;

You can probably see how I've just been lazy and used magnets...

The guys without helmets are an interesting story...  Like all my Assault Marines, they're secondhand guys I gave a new lease on paint and life, but unlike most of them, these guys aren't from the eBay slop pile, they used to be a friend's UM Veteran squad.  I thought it'd be fun to lump them in a JP-less Assault squad, with a headswap for the Sarge. :)

The guy pointing at people is the best IMO  :D

I have aspirations of an entire unit doing that...

Curious, are you getting all these colors using Citadel paints only? Because there's a certain dark tone to your models that is appealing to me. I realize there not entirely finished but whatever method your using is great.

Thanks!  Yeah, that guy's pose is basically what convinced me that the squad was awesome enough to leave as-is. ;)  I do have enough arms for an entire unit to be pointing at someone, though some guy would have to be using a Power Fist!

As for paints, yeah, I'm almost entirely using Citadel paints...  the only exceptions are some Vallejo UV colours I'm mixing into my highlights (as it gives them more... er, "pop").  The darkness comes from all the custom washes I mix up, I've got one that's half Baal Red and Orgryn Flesh, one that's half Leviathan Purple and half Badab Black, you get the idea...  Basically everything red was airbrushed Mechrite Red over a black primer, then washed down with one or both of those two washes (I've done a lot of experimenting, not everyone's painted quite the same), then drybrushed back up with mixes of Mechrite Red + a lighter colour.  Hope that helps!

I hate painting burnt metal without using metallics, but I set myself the stupid challenge of not using metallics or SFX paints in this army.  I then cheated and used some UV paints mixed with the highlights.  Bleh.

Trying to work out if I should try and blend some of the base colour up for highlights or just drybrush it.  I'm inclined to side with the latter...

Happy with how the Stormy is looking though.  Will be taking it dow to my local GW later...

Okay, moving house and other real-life stuff has gotten in the way of my modelling, but I was looking for something to show a friend and came across this;

A really really old BA Razorback I toughed up with some weathering and sold on ebay a while ago...  Weird to see how much my paint style's changed!

Second Stormraven's on the way as soon as I get time...
