Artificier armor or storm shield
« on: February 29, 2012, 06:40:44 PM »
I have exactly 15pts left for my captain, all-comer list. Usually I get both with relic blades, but recently I've relied less on captain and more on my libbie/cassius as HQ. So with a relic blade captain leading a razorback squad or a drop pod squad, which of the protection is better in your opinion? AM is better against horde, SS better against elites, but this is an all-comer list, and the captain and his buddies need to be flexible.

I would go with the Relic Blade and Artificer Armor. 2+/4++ is still very survivable with the added benifit of wounding most infantry on 2's and MCs in a 4+ usually. Well rounded imo.

The best defence is a good offence? Perhaps take a combi-flamer instead? Since you aren't wanting to be engaged with Elite CC units anyway, the added defence that either option provides is pretty minimal against average units but the extra killy power that a flamer shot can put into a unit, especially a horde unit, is likely to remove a decent number of models, thus limiting the attacks that could be directed at your unit in retaliation.

Just a thought. :D

I'd go with the Armour.

It allows you to allocate more shooting hits to him as he's got a very good chance of saving against them, most ap:2/1 shoots are S8+ so even with a storm shield you still wouldn't allocate them to him for fear of ID.

Plus the armour is cheaper if my memory serves  :)

Well, I found that the enemy often tried to get his power-fist wielding guy into contact with your precious HQ. In this case, a SS is the better choice.

I live in constant fear of power fists.  Stormshield.

That said, you are probaly best served by helping your squad perform its role.  A combiweapon brings that extra shot which can tip the odds in your favor.

I'll go with the SS for now, sword and shield looks cool. Will see how he does and change gear next time. Thanks everyone :)

I know you said that you'd try the SS but if you put him with the squad go with the SS as the squad can take the saves and the SS will be helpful if you get hit by a S<8 AP3/2/1 as you would just take a wound in this case.
If you fail, try, try again, if you still fail, try something else.
