Title: List Critique for 1925 Tournament
Post by: Sightless Blind - Free Booter Ork on October 12, 2012, 06:09:12 AM
So out LGS is closing(sad panda) & throwing one last tournament out. 1925 points. Opponents will most likely be orks, chaos, dark eldar, imperial guard & maybe a few flavors of space marine.

Any help with this would be wonderful. Its a rather shooty list & sorta an all comers list. I could switch out some of the more expensive stuff for more bulk warriors(i have about 60 or so). But I only have 8 immortals at present.

Necron Overlord w/ Warscythe, res orb, Sept Weave, Phase Shifter
Royal Court, 5 Harbingers of Destruction
8 Lychguard w/Swords & Shields

7 Man Immortal Squad with Tesla Carbines
4 squads of Necron Warriors (also 7 man each)

3 Canoptek Wraiths w/whip coils
3 Necron Destroyers

1 Annihilation Barge w/tesla cannon
1 Doom Sycthe
1 Doomsday Ark

First thought is the list seems like a little bit of everything, so tell me your game plan for each of your units and how you think they mesh together? Also I'm assuming it's a WYSIWYG tournament so let us know (other then Warriors and Immortals) what else you have in your model range for slight unit tweaks. (I'm pretty much against basically rebuilding your list for you to suit how I like to play. I like to hear what you think about the list so that I, or other players, can help you focus in the direction you like :))

With that out of the way, just based on list here is what I see:

I like large units of Lychguard, especially with an Orb. They are durable, even more so with shields, and most medium or less model count armies fear the damage they can do. My experience comes from large units with Warscythes and small units with Shields.

The squads of Warriors seem a bit small. Yes there are many of them but if you combine them into a few larger squads, you'll benefit more from Reanimation Protocols and the enemy will need to throw more firepower at them to make sure every last model is dead. The Gauss Flayer is also a great anti-vehicle weapon and does better vs high AV compared to the more expensive, less shots, higher strength weapons like your Harbingers of Destruction carry.

Low model count units of Wraiths are great. Cheaper to run but can still be very effective. You'll need to use them as your scalpel, keep them hidden until the right time to strike. If it was a full squad then I'd change tactics and use them more like a hammer.

The small unit of Destroyers seems out of place in this army. Not durable enough to last very long, not enough shots to use as a suicide unit, and not enough range to keep them away from all but the serious firepower. I feel this would be the easiest unit to drop to save points for elsewhere.

Thanks for the reply, I actually edited the list right before testing it tonight against a friend's imperial guard.

It did very effectively in this new incarnation, more of an undying legion motif then a death star approach.

Overlord with phase shifter, gauntlet of fire & res orb(he got the outflank trait, did wonders for him in tonights game)
attached with a 10 man immortals squad with tesla

5 squads of warriors at 9 each, with a cryptek. (Low enough count to have many squads, but a bit higher so it takes more focus fire to kill. my opponent was pretty overwhelmed & he was IG)

3 wraiths w whip coils
3 destroyers

1 doomsday ark,
1 annial barge
1 doom scythe

The destroyers I include because I like the mobility, sadly I dont have more destroyers or I would include more to the unit. They do tend to die or come under heavy fire alot.

Perhaps I can sub them out for scarabs to get a bit more in their face & make them waste fire on that instead?

In the future, please use the modify button. Double posting is against the forum rules, and for that reason, the system merged your posts.

Update on how my tournament went.

Basically this list would have been effective if I could succeed on rolling any successful shooting/wound/saves/reconstructions.

Even my opponents where cringing in horror at how horrid I was rolling. My first match a clear win turned into a total loss due to crap rolls. It was all downhill from there.

I've decided to take that box of dice out back & make the others watch while I burn it with one of my stepdads blowtorches.  :P
