Title: Winter Painting Challenge [Month 2/3]
Post by: Kitsune Tsuki on December 31, 2007, 11:51:40 PM
Welcome to the January Painting Challenge. We are now into the 2nd year of these, first under Loydb, Khemri Demon, Serious Callers Only and now me. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.

I will update this post with a list of people who wish to vow.

RULES

1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.  Vows are still accepted after the 10th, but they can not be changed afterward.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.  It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however.

3. I need to know unit sizes when you post your vows.

FAQ
Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows, myself included.  Feel free to do vows based on any game system.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?

A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

I vow to paint my ten man Ultramarine tactical squad.  I'm really forcing myself to do this one by not gluing the bolters on until the unit is painted.  I'll try to get pictures, but my camera doesn't focus very well close up.

Here we go

10 guardsmen (this may be increased)
10 storm troopers

That should be enough and I now have a gribbly camera.

got rid of conscripts wont have time to make them

I never like to vow much because I never know how much time I will have. I'll probably overshoot my vow again but it makes me feel productive. 8)

This month I vow to paint my Crone World Pathfinders (almost done) and my Autarch which needs a lot of work. I'll start to strip my second guardian squad too and work on em.

- Finish Command Squad
- Clean up 20 Assault Marines, and Paint 10 more Assault Marines
Title: Re: Winter Painting Challenge [Month 2/3]
Post by: Squirrelloid on January 1, 2008, 12:06:37 PM
Given my utter failure to finish last month..

Vows:
5 Death Company with Jump Packs

I want to vow a couple of assault marines, but i'm still working on the conversions and I'm worried about counter-weighting them sufficiently at the moment.  (Metal hammers at the ends of plastic arms with plastic legs up on one foot running... oh yes, this will be fun).  I also desperately need to get some more greenstuff...  So I'll see how the converting goes before vowing anything more.

Edit:
Damn me and wanting to convert any model that sits around for a little bit.

So, modifying my vows to:
1 Death Company Marine w/ jump pack (minor conversion - hand swap)
1 Honor Guard Marine w/ jump pack, bp, ccw
2 Honor Guard Marines w/ jump pack, bp, pf
1 Veteran Assault Marine w/ Flamer, jump pack
1 Veteran Assault Marine w/ thammer, bp, jump pack (conversion - thunderhammer = unidentified pewter mallet)

And i need some greenstuff to finish a VAS w/ thammer conversion and 4 DC conversions.  I really need to stop wanting to put arms at inconvenient angles.  At least 6 DC is enough to play my 1500 point list.  Now i just need those thammer VAS marines done...

And i better hurry up and do it quickly, before i decide to convert those HG marines...  Note, vow does not include basing (i want to do entire squads at the same time when possible, for a unified look within squads).

Well I am ramping up for my stores next 3 month escalation league. doing 500pt increases every 3 weeks so I got a lot of painting to do, especially since i am doing nids!

So this month I vow

24 Gaunts
8 Genestealers
6 Warriors

Already had them assembled cleaned up, primed and I went ahead and airbrushed the base color on lastnight and did up one warrior to test my scheme. Just need to get ahold of the water affects to finish the swamp bases I am doing for them all!

Fold  --    those are some good poses on your suits!

Valar  --    I expect more then that!

Rojo   --     Did the new years monster eat you or something?

Alright, last time I signed up for this, last year I think, I admit I failed (it got done the next month though!). So this time I'm going to redeem myself I hope.

So I vow to get off my arse and paint my Scorpion MkII, and my new shining spears, and my Autarch.

edit
So with my fancy new gift I bought myself, I can now supply pictures of progress :)
(sorry for quality, I havn't had much practice using the camera yet so the photos should get better with time)

Everything I vowed to paint this month

Well, as of now I have nothing to Vow because I just finished

Five assault marines, fully able to change out parts
Five Termies
Chaplin self made with bits. Might snap his J pack off to turn him into a foot slogger with claws
Captain self made with bits. swap out j pack for reg pack.
Captain in T armour.
Apothecary,
Pred, swap out all parts,  ie magnets . Going to bit order whirlwind turret I think.

I guess I could Vow to get them all marked up with my new chapter symbol.  I have finally settle on a chapter symbol so that could be the vow. Though that is about 100 marines and 15 vehicles uggg.

I lurk from time to time here, but I actually think this might help get the lead off my painting table and on to the gaming table, so I think I'll give this a shot.

Let's say:
- 3 Assault Terminators
- 4 Masters of the Chapter

Scratch the SL Guardsman, Gargoyle, Inquisitor Lorr and Psyker.  Replace with Lurtz, Uruk-Hai Shaman, Uruks with Merry and Pippin, and Ugluk.

Hence, new vow:
9 Glade Guard
Lurtz
Ugluk
Uruk-Hai Shaman
Uruks with Merry and Pippin

Digital camera is ordered and will be here on the 19th.

- 12 Terminators are just getting detail should hopefully be done them less their bases by the weekend. However i'll probably keep touching them up.

- Command squad: The Eagle on the arm, Champion's banner, and detailing has slowed down the completion of them. Still in the process of  writing the fluff behind the chapter and making a unified shoulder pad system for my DIY chapter.

- Haven't touched my Assault Marines yet but i'll get to them.

Also finally got to get online the sametime as my friend where I upload my pics too, so here is my proof for last months vow. Dunno what happened to my group shot but you can see their fenders in the pics!

Alright, first progress report.

I've only really been working on the scorpion, but the autarch and shining spears are all finished being built and undercoated, hopefully I'll have some color on them this week. Since they're just black right now, I decided you guys wouldn't be too sad if I left them out of the first update ;)

So here's what I've got done on the scorpion so far.

Progress report:

I have 5 boyz almost finished now.  All I have to do is touch up a few spaces that I twitched and made a mistake (which is waaaaay too many of them, so it may take another hour to finish all that), put some nice colors on some of their bracelets, do the mouths, add some blood to the weapons, and do the eyes.  So pretty much just aesthetic details.  ETA: Another 2 hours of work.  Time elapsed: about 6 hours so far.  Most of it today... my neck hurts. :D

On another note, my digital camera has gone AWOL, but if I find it I'll post up pictures once the 5 are done.  I'm quite proud of them; they're the best painting I've done on any minis.  Which is probably fairly sad, since they don't look as nice as a lot of those posted here, but I digress...

I will paint 3 masters of the chapter this month (I'm skipping the Master of Recruits, because I'm rather ambivalent about the model).

I've actually already finished one:

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpages.sbcglobal.net%2Fjdr%2Fimages%2Fsalamanders%2Fcpt_pa_th_ss_front.jpg&hash=5dd1f0bf45cd8c0f72cac4d11373df155d9139eb)

I gave this guy the Master of the Watch's storm shield, because I liked it better on this guy. I also gave him a helmet from the ravenwing sprue, because I'm tired of bare-headed marine characters.

Post by: Aervyper Venom on January 8, 2008, 12:42:43 AM
@ Magus : Looks good I gave 3 of my Masters of Chapters Helmets. The only one i couldn't was the one that was holding his helmet. With the guy you painted, i gave him a storm bolter and trimmed it (cut off the clip put it on the side) (took all the bottom off and added a curve to fit the wrist). Your conversion or addition to the model looks good.

@ Kiarstill : Scorpion looks good, not my color of choice but anyone with the weapons pointed at them really has no valid comment since they will be atoms in mere seconds, and atoms can't vote.

@ Myung : really clean keep up the good work

Huzzah, I found my camera, and managed to take some really poor pictures!

Here's my 5 boyz, almost completed (with the one on the far left and the middle one being completely finished).

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2F01010018.jpg&hash=689af8d768d5d292b43ed390fd52779e811ca43f)

And then the banner, which I also did today.  It's not that great, and the picture came out horribly (the text at the bottom says Guns N' Axes), but it's not too bad for my first real free-hand.  And it looks quite orcy.

So, about 5 down, and about 5 more to go :D

Vows Updated and will be locked in 3.5 hours.

My progress is good thus far.  Saeryn is done, agonizer is pseudo done.  I dipped him and I'm not sure I'm entirely happy.  Considering stripping him, then trying the dip again with a more...known brand like Minwax.  Also my raptor has the metals done.  The cyclops is depending on the results of my dip.

Update:
DC marine finished except for highlighting, but that won't be too major.

HG marine w/ bp, ccw, jump pack in progress.  Jump pack is only primed, model is otherwise painted (but not done with highlighting) barring a few small details.  (I glue major components after painting, because i hate how some components constrict my ability to accurately paint areas - i also paint the arms separately until i'm down to things to do at the distal ends).

Rest received 'unexpected' conversions, but are ready for painting - i suck about just assembling models, converting/planning is almost more fun than painting.  Actually, above HG marine has an arm rotation at the upper arm done as well, so i suppose its also mildly converted.

Edit: pics coming after i figure out how to get good mini-pictures with my new digital camera.

Stripped and reprimed my agonizer.  Going to need another primer coat though.  Also painted and dipping the cyclops.  Turned out very nicely.  A bit heavy in a few areas, but looks good for a test model.

Finished Cyclops.  Excuse the bad photos/bad photo cropping.  Yes, I dipped him.  Yes, I like how dipped models look.  I forgot to shake him and only wiped the paint off so there's some heavy spots, but otherwise I think he looks amazing.  I will dull cote him eventually.  I would like suggestions for basing him too.  Forgive the large pictures.

EDIT: Other progress updates.  Try airbrushing the bloodclaws.  Didn't work to well.  The paint divided into the pigments and turned blue-green.  Now I have some very odd colored bloodclaws.

I'm done.  I got lazy and decided to make an immolator/rhino just by making the top portion interchangeable.  Also, the weapons on the immolator has been magnetized so that I could change the weapons, though I really double I'll ever use the multimelta and turn the immolator vehicle into a really overpriced rhino.

Week Two Progress report. I'm really sad this week turned out to be way more busy than I thought (back in school, tournament on saturday and homework all of sunday). None-the-less there is progress made, pictures of which you can find below.

First, the Shining Spears (of which I seem to be signed up for an extra one somehow... ???)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv326%2FKiarstill%2FHPIM0048.jpg&hash=d2786b34e5f73a2143c23671a2b0a395a46a0749)

Then we've got the Autarch
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv326%2FKiarstill%2FHPIM0050.jpg&hash=d6c3e6a24058451bca09d3fce008709d2774a062)

And the Scorpion (with models to scale in the last picture)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv326%2FKiarstill%2FHPIM0051.jpg&hash=d9230a4c7e131e2ffea4408a6b1883570252dd5b)

So still lots to do (especially on the scorpion, who as you can see has lots of black lines that need to be filled in still.

Okay I admit I went camera-happy, I'll try and keep it to fewer pictures next time ;)

have you got any advise how you got your paint soo mooth and crisp over such large flat areas??

progress for me is really really slow at the moment, i cant seem to find any motivation, plus im waiting to start my new eldar army next month for the tale of X Gamers thread

@DJ of E  very nice work, the 'Eavy Metal team should be in awe of your talent.

@Valar i have found that using a flat horse hair brush combined with thinned down foundation paints provide smoothe coats. it could also be the paint he uses as well. i have recently began using Reaper Master paints and the way the paint lays and dries compared to GW paint is astounding.

with GW paint if i dont water it down enough the brush strokes start showing on the paint, with reaper its so smooth you cant feel or see a difference from the painted on areas to the spray primered areas. my only qualm with reaper is its a tad thin for my liking but i have been experimenting with putting down a foundation paint and then going over it with thinned down reaper and its working, i might try mixing the foundation paint with the reaper to achieve a color i want that doesnt show through.

if anyone who uses reaper master paints has any advice or tips on painting without it streaking or showing through id appreciate it, so far its been an adventure ( my test jetbike is in dire need of a consistant coat of paint )

have you got any advise how you got your paint soo mooth and crisp over such large flat areas??

1/3 water 2/3 paint.  You also need a set of flat-head brushes.  I normally use a 0.5" brush for large areas.  For vehicles, like eldar's, 1/3" works better has there's too much area focus on 0.5" brush.  The whites of my vehicle are actually 9 coats of different grey-to-white thinned paints.  Astronomican Grey (foundation paint) is such an awesome piece of paint.

Ivellos:  Man, those tyranids make me feel like I should paint some of my own.  Those are awesome for WIP.

I have officially completed my vow for this month.  I painted my Fantasy Troll, mega armored Nob, and my 5 trollkin Champions.

Tomorrow I'm also planning on painting two swamp gobber belows models, which I did not vow to do, but just thought I'd mention that.

Finished and I just put them all away so I didn't want to pull them all back out again. I actually have another 14 Termagaunts done on top of all the ones in the foam.

Ugg... Doing red well takes so fricking long.  I should have remembered/thought of that when i made my vow, but no, i based my projected ability to paint off of Death Company i did last month (who are black, and therefore pretty easy).  So i finished 3 (of 6) models, one of which was death company, and a jump pack for a 4th.  Pictures coming as soon as i get them uploaded.  And i suck, again.

I failed mine, it seems.  I got 5 boyz done, and almost completed the Hive Tyrant and Guard (which I thought I changed my vow to, since I posted on the 10th, but maybe it wasn't changed... *shrugs*), but then came down with the flu.

Anyways, grats to those who finished.

Oh, and squirrell, you're preaching to the choir about red.  What I do is just use the Foundation set red, and then a couple coats of blood red, and it comes out nicely.

Oh, and squirrell, you're preaching to the choir about red.  What I do is just use the Foundation set red, and then a couple coats of blood red, and it comes out nicely.

I tried that.  Its darker than the stuff i did years ago (which will be kind of amusing, but i suppose not a big problem).  I'm actually liking the following a little better: drybrush on deneb stone, followed by a drybrush of blood red, then red ink followed by a coat of blood red to bring it up again.  Nice dark red sunk details with a decent blood red color.

Then of course its time for highlighting, which takes like half the time i put into the model.  The problems are two-fold: (A) I really dislike 'eavy metal style - its basically edging and doesn't look like a light effect at all.  I'm a much bigger fan of something closer to a 'painterly' shading.  (B) Taking blood red up to something near blazing orange at the light focal point and doing it well requires time and lots of wet blending.  And there are a surprising number of relevant surfaces on a marine with a jump pack.

Of course, for the non-HG assault marine (i'm not cool enough for NMM yet, so the HG model just got metallics on his helmet), the helmet also needed shading.  And if any color takes longer than red its yellow.  In addition to having to basecoat it white to get the yellow to even cover well, it took like 1.5 hours to shade the darn thing.

As mentioned, these models are going to combine... interestingly... with my older models.  I wasn't being especially attentive to shading or anything fancy at the time (years and years ago), and then spent time painting non-40k stuff where i experimented with various techniques when i painted at all, and am continuing to experiment with them on these models.  (Fantasy miniatures don't tend to have large flat 'colored' (non-metal) surfaces - makes shading trickier for marines actually.)
