Working at GW
« on: October 17, 2014, 04:49:52 PM »
So I figured this is something I ought to share here;

I'm applying for a job at Nottingham HQ.  I can't say what position it is I'm going for but I'm going to give it my best shot.  They aren't looking for specific qualifications but I hope my collage level education helps.  :P

So, what your saying is it's not your fault you look stupid by using words you don't get?
Flawless logic.

Best of luck in applying.
If there is anything that recent politics has taught us, it is that quotes taken out of context can mean what ever you want them to.

Be positive, not negative. The vibes help so think like you're gonna not the other way around. Good luck!

Thanks guys  :)

I'm tired of doing boring jobs I can't stand, so I'm thinking that it's time that I go something I would enjoy.

Of course not!  And thanks! :)

My dream would be to work on the design team.  Actually making the game.  Taking the ideas I make in the Forge and turning them into a reality.  I can draw, and I would love to work as an artist for them but as it stands I'm not good enough to do so, so writing is my most realistic opportunity.

Apologies for the double post but:

Bugger that's a shame. Plainly GW can't recognise talent from just a letter as Kirby said they could.

I wish they told me why they wouldn't invite me to an interview.  That would have been really helpful.  But, I'm not beat.  I'll just wait until the next opportunity at GW rolls around.

I wonder if I should post the letter here and let you guys check it out.

Employers very rarely explain to you why you didn't get the position if you were not asked for interview.  In my experience, it's also the case that they don't always give you feedback about why you didn't get the job if you were asked for an interview, even though they said that they would.

I've found that to be the case as well not including this incident.  :-\

Right ho:

I am writing here to apply for the position of Publications Copywriter for Games Workshop.  The prospect of working to promote the Games Workshop hobby through writing promotional material greatly excites me, as it has been a long term ambition of mine to work for this company.

I’m eager to work for Games Workshop because I have been participating in collecting and gaming since a young age, and I find it to be a uniquely enjoyable and highly rewarding experience.  Not only that, I have also made many of my friends through our shared interest in it.   Games Workshop’s products are a huge part of my life and I would love to be involved with them at its source.

I fully understand the appeal of the brand and what it has to offer to people in terms of creativity, entertainment and social interaction.  I can still recall my first game ever; a skirmish between the Dark Eldar and Space Marines the day after my ninth birthday.  Since then I’ve spent countless hours building, converting, painting and playing.  I’ve participated in group games that have lasted whole weekends, and chased down old and rare miniatures online.  The hobby has given me memories I still share with my friends to this day, and I want to help make these kinds of stories happen for other players everywhere.

Therefore I would love the chance to use my own personal knowledge of the brand to help work towards promoting it to potential customers with a well crafted narrative.  Whilst Warhammer 40,000 is by far my favorite system, I’ve also enjoyed playing Warhammer Fantasy and the Specialist Games Necromunda and Mordheim, so I have much knowledge of the history and scope of the whole brand.

As writing is also something I greatly enjoy, I’m eager to work at the chance to combine my interest in it with my interest in the Games Workshop hobby.  Writing campaigns and home based rules are things I frequently undertake within my gaming circle.  I have developed everything from special battlefield conditions to alternative wargear options or even entirely new units altogether.  I feel that I am suitable for the position because my university education has taught me how to write towards pitching an idea to readers and how to adhere to deadlines using only my own skills and resources with minimal support.

That failed to spark their interest.

Impressive. I really like the way you have written your application. If I were to be picky the job advert says in bold state why you want this job.Your application doesn't appear to cover the "why".
