Title: Winter Painting Challenge [Month 1/3, CHALLENGE COMPLETE CLAIM YOUR SMILEY]
Post by: SeriousCallersOnly on November 30, 2006, 06:19:48 PM
ALL VOWS MUST BE IN BY December 10th

Welcome to the December Painting Challenge. We are now into the 2nd year of these, first under Loydb, Khemri Demon and now me. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.

I'll list vows made, name and praise those that make it and name and shame those that don't.

You can expect to be 'reminded' of your vow around the 20th of the month if we don't see any further posts after you make the vow.

I'll also compile a gallery of completed vow photos before the thread is locked at the end of the month, so don't just claim a vow is complete, show us!

This one will run for December, January and February. (Note that this is three one-month challenges, not one three-month challenge.)

A squad, for the purpose of definition, would be anything that counted as a unit choice (e.g. HQ, Elite, Troop, etc.). This includes retinue for the independant char (e.g. familiars, bodyguards, etc.). I'd personally like to see multi-model squads -- the purpose of the challenge is to get a bunch of lead painted in a 3-month period -- but maybe you're planning on doing a kickass conversion/paint job for an army leader, nothing wrong with that.

RULES

1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.

3. The model doesn't have to be texture based -- but the base must be painted.

4. Vows in parenthesis/brackets are essentially maybes and therefore won't count towards a fail if you don't do them.

Painting Challenge FAQ

Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows. Since Warmachine doesn't use squads in the same way that 40K does, I suggest that it be at least a 3-man squad (Menoth Choir, etc.), or a warcaster + at least one warjack.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

Q: I want to paint a squad of Howling Banshees and a single Ranger. Is the Ranger legal?
A: Yes. The "must count as a troop choice" rule establishes the minimum. Anything above that doesn't have to conform, it's just bonus.

Q: When is the closing date?
A: The month runs with the calendar month. Vows freeze on the 11th.

Thanks to Loydb for getting this up and running (come back any time), and Khemri Demon for continuation. Lets see those vows

I think it's about time that I became a player in these challenges.  I've been watching them for a while now and I have a Dark Eldar army to paint for a tournament at the end of January.
So far I have no idea what I want to get done, so I will let you know before vows close, just figured I'd drop you a line.  Possibly 3 Raiders and a Ravager, there will be a bunch of warriors too, but I don't know how many.
And I have to complete it, otherwise I will be in serious trouble, and at a disadvantage for the tournament.  Then I might explode in a shower of gore and I don't think that would be enjoyable for anybody.

Long time reader, first time caller!

Well, seeing as it's Christmas I'll have some time off work and I need to get a 750 point army ready for Winter Wars come January, so I'll be bold and I'll vow a 750 point Black Templars army :D lol
I've got most of the bits together and once I've worked a list I'll post a proper vow.

Post by: Myung on December 1, 2006, 01:34:03 PM
Since I can see the light at the end of the tunnel as far as finishing my Tau Army and a bazillion more things to build and paint, another big vow incomming.

16 Fire Warriors
12 Kroot
12 Drones
6 XV25 Stealth suits
6 XV8 Battlesuits with all weapon options
3 Piranahas and Drones
1 Drone Sniper Team
1 Etheral

that would finish em off and in truth I started on the stealth suits already a week or so ago since I finished last months vow early. Stealth suits are 80% done. Test models take forever as the first stealth suit took me 12 hours to figure out what I wanted to do. And to think I still have to do a test model for my kroot and battlesuits heh.

Oh well here's to another happy month of painting all!

Serious I want to fight your DE. They look so pretty and by pretty I mean they have to die!

One immolator. It doesn't sound like much But as part of the vow I will assemble it, with magnetised weapons Including, an idea I have to  have a magnetised gun carriage on the top So I can swap it from Immolator to exorcist...

Look you'll know what I mean when I post pics.

You can wait until January if you want, it's not like we'll stop just to thwart you. Plus even if SeriousCallers stopped running it, with my exams over, I'd be happy to pick it up again.

Vows updated.

So we have 18 vows in so far, with details to follow from Rojo. GM Judah, do want to give details of your 750pt BT army too?

Web Ghost - if you think you can paint a squad this month, feel free to vow. You can always withdraw by the 10th. We'll still be doing this next month though. I've got too large a backlog of DE to stop now.

Anyone from last months vow, I've posted, as requested, a gallery of completed vow photos. I'll do the same this month if we like this.

Nice work on the gallery on last month's, that's a good idea. Might add it to the intro that the vow thread will be officially locked after the mod has made a little gallery at the end of the thread.

Okay, I'll play.
I have a City Fight Tournament on December 30, and I want to get my new Eldar done (in my new sceme too)
So here (the crazy) list I'm working to get done.
Farseer
6 Banshees
5 Fire Dragons
20 Dire Avengers
3 Warwalkers
3 Vypers
and 5 Pathfinders

(Unless it's only one squad, then I'll have to make it my Warwalkers, as they're going to be looking awesome)
Wish me Luck ;)

Yea, but my friend did pretty much his entire Tyranid army in a day and night to get it done for a tournament (20 gaunts some warriors and finished his tyrant if i remember right). Only had 3 hours of sleep. So if he can do that, I can get it done in a month :D

Well, Tyranids are pretty much the fastest thing on earth to paint decently (or skeletons maybe) -- doing Eldar is an entirely different ballgame. Good luck with it!

OK, so this is what I've decided would be a sane idea.

44 dark eldar warriors (including 3 sybarites and a bunch of heavy and special weapons)
3 Raiders
1 Ravager

20 of those warriors are basecoated, but they are not at the level I want them at yet, however there are a bunch I need to strip/spray over.
That won't leave too much for next month so I can get it all painted for the tournament at the end of January.

Oh, and bloody northen hemisphereians and their crazy mixed up seasons.

edit:

I've never liked the Bullwinkle-style ears on the Avatar, and I have a more Swooping Hawks than I'll ever use (I have no idea how I got 20 of them, but I apparently did somehow). This is the result. I'll prime this and the direct mail Ranger fig tomorrow, just waiting on one more fig to finish drying.

Vows updated.

Up to 26 vows now, with all vows to be in by sunday please. Proud to see that for one vower, this was their first post on 40konline. Welcome.

I've changed my vow lightly to a regular squad rather than sniper squad, as I appear to have one already cleaned up and primed.

Ravager is coming along, basecoated and ready for the ink. Wish I'd painted the crew before I glued them down though.

Hope they fix the smilies before the end of the month.

If so I vow to finish my eldar cobra. It's sat around far too long.

Ok to update my Vow, I'll be vowing atleast the following:

Chaplain
Emperor's Champion
12 Initiates
8 Neophytes
6-man Assault Squad

Thought it'll probably end up being more than that, as in total I'll have about 10 Neopythes, 30 Initiates, a Dread + HQs

ive undercoated and base coated my tactical squad silver and ive put the scab red on 2 of them.

as for my goliaths i have 3 done and done! does it matter if i do a couple of juves, i put down gangers in my vow.

it would be cool to see a few more pictures this month i reckon, especially the people that are vowing to paint nigh-on 1500 pts in less than 30 days, that would be cool to see ;)

OK vowers, I've got everything updated. I've been having trouble accessing the site for the last couple of days and not had time to sort it out. Seems OK now though. Vows are now locked, so get painting.

Yep Myung, seems to be the most we've had on this month I think.

Seconding Hellboy, lets see lots of WIPs. I'll be running the gallerythis month also, so if you finish anything, post a pic clearly labelled as finished and I'll collate them.

My progress, weeeellll, my five year old son got hold of my half painted Ravager, and left it where my one year old son could get at it. Yep, not a pretty sight. Still, I was wishing I had painted the crew before sticking them down, I may as well take advantage of it being in half a dozen pieces, and paint then assemble. I did take a photo before it got trashed, so I may post that later. Not started the squad yet.

Nice Falcon/Prism. Like the gold amphetamine parrot, and the blue stuff. Shame the red lining is not neater, but I doubt I could do any better so don't listen to me.

My defiler is nearing completion.  I ran out of catachan green though so I can't mix up the armor shading through rotting flesh anymore until I get some more.  Right now its just about done, but all the green areas are too dark.  Man these things are a pain in the ding ding.  Every part is enclosed by something else.  I don't think I'm going to be able to post any pics for a while.  No camera.

Well, my eldar army is seeing progress, it might actually be finished in time :). The Wraithlord is almost done, as is my farseer. My dire avengers are the farthest behind as it is right now, 3 are still in black (the only ones mind you). It's going to be close, and to be fair I'll likely be doing touchups on them past the deadline, but as far as being done for the 30th (tournament date) I think they'll be done :).
Progress pics to come soon

Myles took me a bit to figure out that was a Cobra you were working on! I love the lil gold lining all along the edges.. You might want to Edge all your black panels to really make em pop.

as for me I finished my sniper drone team and 6 XV8 battlesuits and all their weapons this past weekend. Does it mean you painted too much when your thumb is still numb the day after? lol but yet I still have so much left to do!

For all of those celebrating Christmas you better get a move on as you know your whole next weekend is shot! I know I personally will be on old person patrol for the family heh

OMFG.
FINALLY!!!
I've been having problems since the site update.  I wasn't able to enter threads.  Which made it kind of difficult to post...
Anyway, after a change of browser and an update of said browser I am back and I have to report that things have not been going so well in the painting department.  I have 15 warriors to base-coat, 2 raiders and the ravager to go.

All of a sudden I got work and have been working non-stop until today.  Then I discovered a piece of assessment I thought was due in in March is actually due in on January 8.  Also, the highlight I want has not come in yet, so that is putting a halt on the whole finishing process.

All in all, a pretty piss-poor effort, making January a much more difficult month.

If I'm really lucky I'll get some time before New-Year's, however I do not anticipate finishing this vow.

I'm going to fail this round I think, I got side-tracked when my Forgeworld basilisk gun-shield finally arrived, so now I have a very pretty artillery piece, but a ton of unpainted traitors. I blame Christmas shopping.

Looking slightly more hopeful now. All the Hawks' armour plates have a couple of coats of white so that the clear blue should look nice and bright, and the grey undersuit is done. Working on the wings too.

so I add to my list some dissapointment. I started my 3 piranas, finished 1 to 100% went to seal it and the damn sealent put cracks all over the freaking model. Spent a whole day trying to build up layers to cover them. The cracks on the nose refused to go away so i dremel sanded down the nose and man it made it so rough that now it looks worse then before. but 1 is done and the other 2 are about 70% done.

that still leaves me with 16 firewarriors, 1 etheral and 12 kroot. think I might have vowed too much this time. Well atleast I have the next 4 days off and only going out 2 of them!

I've been offline for a few days, but I'll be compiling the list of dids and didn'ts tonight. Challenge closes at 12 midnight GMT, although I doubt I'll be finalising until the morning, so if you want your photos in the final gallery, get them up soon. I'll try and get January's thread up and running either tomorrow or more likely the day after.

Oh, and I finished my vow yesterday. One ravager, 10 warriors. Photo later.

i did however get a few of my rangers complete and i worked some more on my falcon however i also got a Wraithlord for xmas which i just couldnt justify not starting so i have done although i must say im unconvinced by the results of it

ok here are my pics. I actually finished my entire Tau army this month so I took a few pics of the entire army. I have never finished painting an entire army before it feels very strange indeed! Sorry about the flash, really washes out my highlights and blends but I tried a few without it and they were really dark.

Great Tau army there Myung.  cool choice of color scheme!

I am calling my vow done.  It is not 100 percent, but the thing was bare plastic for years until now.  I'll see about pics right now.

Well I didn't quite get all of it done, but it came fairly close anyway. Next month I'll try something more manageable ;) though myungs army looks awesome and puts me to shame :P. I'll try and get pics up of what did get done anyway when I find the cable for the camera.

I semi-completed my vow for December.  I wasn't able to do the Trollblood Axer, but I did complete a Totem Hunter, Alten Ashley the Monster Hunter, and I did complete the Drednought.
