Can You Solve This Puzzle?
« on: September 2, 2011, 09:08:35 PM »
I created this myself. Originally there was much less to see, but early testers found it too difficult to understand. So I added more. I'm still not entirely sure this is what I want it to be, but for now I don't know what else to do with it. It will take more than a few seconds to work out though.

First, a little background material to help set the scene.

You are attempting to retrieve data from a computer with powerful security systems in place. You are tasks with solving this puzzle in order to gain access to the information you need.

You have to use all of the supplied letters and numbers within the 4x4 divided square to form a passcode that runs like the example given below it.

I have supplied an example of a set of steps you will need to take at least once in order to get the right series of letters and numbers. Additionally, know that the question marks represent unknown variables, and the letters accompanying them are very important in helping you understand what's going on.

Finally, note that the end result will be nothing cohesive. It is not an actual word, but a specific sequence of numbers and letters. Good luck!

B R 18 2
7 25 Y G

this is the simple answer so it's probably very incorrect.

my gut tells my that's too easy if it is the answer.

7 R 18 G
B 25 Y 2

that would probably be what i would key in first.

I'm afraid both answers are incorrect, although the second is a bit closer than the first. What was your thought process as you worked towards that answer? It's important to me to understand how people approach it.

The first series is simple alpha numeric, give all letters a value based on their place in the alphabet, then arrange so the smaller of the two values takes the upper slot. This is based from example 1.

The second set is a little more complex. Each value is placed by giving the colours meaning. Prime colours take the bottom row, half tones take the upper row, the colours are transposed onto the values. Hence prime yellow = Y and prime green is B. again the sets were flipped so the prime is always on the bottom.

G R 25 2
7 18 Y B

Your thinking is correct in some instances, and your latest answer is the closest so far. It's hard to explain how you've interpreted the clues a different way than intended without giving it away.

It's less about the prime colours/half colours and just more about their position and relation to the letters and numbers. You're definitely on the right track though, for the most part.

But i don't understand, how can this be the wrong answer, its the answer to life the universe and EVERYTHING, not everything except this puzzle.

Oh, and by the way jawmonkey, i laughed so hard at that i almost fell of my chair.

Be nice to nerds, you'll probably be working for them.

What if by 'fly you fools'  Gandalf was actually telling the fellowship to call the eagles and fly to Mordor?

I know. I think Sarky doesn't want to admit he's been beaten. Yes, threadomancy gives extra credit.
