Orks... after a 25 year gap! Now with wings..! (sort of)
« on: May 20, 2010, 08:38:18 AM »
So, after a gap of about 25 years I've decided to get an Ork army together...

Thought I'd document the process here...

First up three work-in-progress Gretchin... Starting at the bottom rung and working my way up!

I'm trying to give them a natural(?) difference in skin colour, which so far I think is working...

Hopefully more to follow soon...

Alright mate,

Good to see you on 40K Online, as you may have noticed I pretty much live on here! :)

Hope you're well too, it's been ages!

These are looking lovely mate, absolutely lovely! I do really like the skin tone you've gone with , it is a more natural look, if green could ever be considered natural, but I know what you mean.

But it compliments the other colours very nicely too, they match tonally which is always a good start.

And you know I don't think I have ever seen any of your figures before? I know you said you were starting Orks but that was a while ago so it's really nice to see some paint on them, an I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Are you going for a particular Clan or just a mix?

And we need to meet up too, it must be about 10-15 years now? I don't get back down South much any more (I know I'm only in LOndon but you know what I mean! :))
Dig in, and wait for winter.

Wow. Those are pretty darn good. The 2nd Grot's pistols look so natural. The skin colors is natural also. I can't find anything really bad about these guys. I can't wait to see more of your guys.

Well thanks for the kind words there everyone... nice to know that I'm doing OK..! To be honest I'm enjoying painting again even more than I thought I was going to.

You know Chris it's your fault that I've started again..? The photos of your Ultramarines and Macragge PDF really inspired me... So now Methila knows who to blame..! It would be great to meet up by the way, I'll send you a message or something...

So... Wednesday night is Ork night, and here's yesterday's progress:

Next I get to tackle basing..! Static Grass..!

Paint the base first, as the Static Grass looks better if there is a real earth tone below it...

Otherwise those guys look great...

Thanks for the advice... I'm also going to stick on some sand that I acquired from Southend Beach... it has a really nice mixture of grains and bits and pieces, as well as some tiny granite chip things to add texture.

But I'll definitely paint the whole lot before adding the grass. I'm going to try and add it in patches to look (hopefully) natural...

Mini update...

Wow your Orks look really awesome.

I like the look of Orks but I just don't have money to start a third army. I love how they can go from totally goofy looking to completely fierce and your paint jobs do a good job of capturing that Ork spirit I think.
Please allow me to adjust my pants... So that I may dance the good time dance

Introducing 'The Dokk'...

A bit of a break from painting, and my first attempt at modeling with 'Green Stuff'...

I'm trying to go for a combination of doctor and butcher..!

There's still a fair bit to do, but so far I'm quite pleased...

There'll be some king of hose/pipe thing from the tank on his back to the 'urty syringe (as I believe the technical name is) and some kind of telescopic magnifying eye thing for those 'delicate' operations. The power claw is to help with the... less willing patients..!

Another update...

Arms attached... bits & pieces added...

a little tidying up to do, the hose/pipe thing to add and we're nearly there...

By the way the ork skull is there as a permanent reminder... a patient that didn't make it..!

Picked up the brushes again...

Some Nobz and a burna boy...

The Nobz will be adding a (small amount of) much needed colour...

I bought a few burna boyz on Ebay...when they arrived, the end of this one's burna was broken off, so the meks scavenged and stole a few Imperial Guard flamers, which they mek'd into a three burner arrangement... Lucky lad...

Don't seem to be able to finish one thing before starting another..!

By the way, did I say how much I love my new mini drill bits..? Drilling out gun barrels, exhaust vents (check the 'Exhaust Hed Nob')...

First of all apologies for not replying to your PM, only spotted it this morning (I never think to check there for some reason - doh!), I'll send you back a message after lunch today.

And then secondly these are all looking really lovely!

I like the use of the new washes, you have really got to grips with them and your metallics especially are very good.

And as someone who has never had any luck with greenstuff I need to congratulate you on your painboy, he looks suitably mean and scary!

I also love the use of bits on your burna, I really like the triple flamer head.

And you're as bad as me for not finishing something before moving onto the next, that's why I have four half painted armies and another 5 or six sitting in cupboards waiting to be assembled....

Thank God I didn't start Orks ir 'Nids! I think you will need to get yourself some vehicles or Kans to break up the monotony of painting boys, Orks are one of the few armies that has more troops than Guard, and Guard have driven me crazy! :)

Anyway, we def need to meet up, will PM you this afternoon.

Cheers Chris,

I've got a Trukk, a looted Rhino, a Deffkopta and three Kans in the box waiting... and that's on top off the boyz, the nobs, the lootaz and their mek, the rest of the grots, the war boss, the 'Dokk' and the burna/stormboy hybrids..! I've certainly got enough to keep me busy..!

I was gonna ask you about basing... what do you use on yours they look really good... I'm experimenting with sand (from Southend beach!) which I'm painting and hopefully using a little static grass on... but so far the colors aren't really doing it... What colours do you use..?

The washes are fantastic! Back when I used to paint (I remember when this was all fields.!) there were no washes... you had to use inks that were all horrible and shiny..! Bah... I'm getting old!

Its all looking good, I am wondering why you paint without priming the figures though... I find that primer helps the paint to adhere better, and last longer.... So are you using Foundation Paints to start with, or do you have some other secret method to getting regular paints to work well on plastic.

Cheers

PS, get the edge of those bases done... they are ruining otherwise excellent figures.

Thanks mate...

I'm spending a little more time on the Nobz... the grots got a bit rushed, so I re-visited them and added a few highlights to the skin etc...

No secret though I'm afraid... I'm using a grey 'car' primer to spray them with. I find the grey gives just the right kind of mid-tone for most colours to go over. I find black can be too dark and white too light (plus I got it really cheap on ebay..!)

cheers!

I really love the quality of these models, great work!

Edit: I won't post again but I thought compliments were allowed on threads which showed people's minis and I've already seen many posts like mine so I am a bit confused. While you may argue it is one line and does not really add to the thread, I don't think Those cares that much, but remove it if you wish

I particularly like how the color on the nobz's armour plates is chipped off on edges- it looks extraordinarily realistic!  Keep it up, looking forward to seeing the whole horde
