How good/what is this army?
« on: June 14, 2013, 02:45:16 PM »
Greetings, I am a complete n00b to Warhammer miniature gaming, but my friend has recently made me a deal and I would love to finally play the miniatures (I am a huge Dawn of War fan).

I somewhat keep up, mainly for storyline purposes (Codex and just to see the new units/models etc...) so I have a general idea of getting into the hobby and know the codex will also cost some money.

Anyways, here is the army list, unopened boxes and dead stock.

2 x Dark Eldar Kabalite Warriors

2 x Dark Eldar Wyches

Dark Eldar Hellions

Dark Eldar Scourges

2 x Dark Eldar Raider

(2000 pts)

Was wondering your guys thoughts/opinions?

The cost for all of it is 150$, is that worth it for not only a cool army, but also a decent fighting one as well?

This looks like a very nice deal and you save a good amount of bucks and everything you've listed is useful. Personally i don't like Hellions but that's just me. Others think they're the best  :P

Another box of Scourges and 2-3 more Hellions would be required later, if you wanted to make larger units. While the Scourgs are ok in units of 5, Hellions need larger numbers to perform well.

That said, these minis will not give you a 2k army but they're a decent package for a start at a very good price.

In my view, many players have somewhat spammy lists these days with minimum squads of wracks and trueborns, mounted in venoms for maximum MSU-min/maxing. These are not the lists i like to play with but some claim they're the most competitve setup. That said, if you want to make a start into the hobby and stick around for a while, i wouldn't go that direction in terms of collecting an army. It's always good to have a wide selection of units.

Anyways, these boxes would cost ~240$ when purchasing them from GW, so it's a good deal. Be aware that Dark Eldar are one of the 'difficult to play' armies. You will lose often in the beginning but once you know the game and your army, they can be devastating.

The word 'politics' is derived from the word 'poly', meaning 'many', and the word 'ticks', meaning 'blood sucking parasites'.

Welcome to the Dark Kin!  You have picked an awesome, and very stylish, army to pick up.  The disadvantage is that they can be a bit tough to use well, because they are so fragile.  I recommend having a look through some of the tactics and army list threads to get an idea of how people use them effectively, but here are my thoughts, for what it's worth...

DE are a glass hammer army.  Live by your manouvrability, strike fast, strike hard and try to use overwhelming force on isolated sections of your opponents line.  With that in mind, I would suggest getting some more transports.  Although some people do use static warrior blobs, they are very fragile, and Wyches on foot are even worse.  As has been mentioned, some people like to play Venom spam, but I reckon a balanced mix of Raiders and Venoms is more fun to collect and play.

Also, invest in some Heavy Support.  Ravagers are great value for points, and the easiest to use well, but all of our HS choices have real potential.

Congrats at picking up a great starter force for such a good price.  Let us know how you fare with it.
