Painting cheese cloth?
« on: December 1, 2009, 02:23:07 PM »
Can someone tell me how I should paint cheese cloth without screwing up the model's paint under the cloth?

Linky to show you what I mean:

I'd say give it a good airbrushing before you put it on.

Yea, paint it seperately, most certainly.  As to how to paint it... not sure.  Airbrush should work though.

Do you want the cheese cloth to be very free flowing and flimsy or do you want it more solid.

I would almost say to dip it in elmers glue and shape it and then let it dry before painting it if you want it more solid.  That way it would be easier to paint and would hold its shape.

If you wanted it to be loose then an airbrush might work the best to coat it though it might also ruin the shape if you did it once it was attached to the model so I agree with the othersposters in stating to do it before if you want the cheese cloth loose and flexible.

Cover the model in clingfilm(sandwich wrap) then either paint the cloth and drape it over the model while it is still wet...or spray it while on the wrapped model.

The paint will stiffen the cloth to some degree, probably quite a lot. Then when its dry you can unwrap the model and stick the cloth back on with Blutac or a spot or two of glue.

Why don't you dye it? There are plenty of products in mainstream hobby shops and supermarkets. You could even do a strong tea and leave the cheese cloth in it overnight or longer, too colour the cloth.

I agree completely with dying it. Once you finish painting the model place the dyed cheese cloth on the model and use some super glue to harden it.
