Introduction:
Old Introduction
I am no stranger to W40K projects. Sometime in 2003 I swore to myself I would never play Eldar unless they were Exodite or Corsairs - that was sworn on Rogue Trader inherited from my uncle.
Forgeworld has been paying extra attention to Corsairs and with all the rumour hype of IA11 and the current corsair units that have been released, Im starting my own Eldar army.
For many years, the Eldar Corsair has captured the imagination of Eldar players. Till now, there has been no Corsair codex or army list. Then came Imperial Armour 11.
I am building an army that can be played as Craftworld Eldar, Eldar Corsairs and Dark Eldar. One army, three army lists.
To this end, I have been using CWE units, Forgeworld conversions, Dark Eldar units, and quite a number of kitbash conversions and some green stuff conversions to come.
Watch this page for the Eldar stalkers of the void.
Background: Iadanna
Corsairs are Eldar who have left their Craftworlds to walk the Path of the Corsair, neither Outcast, Damned or Craftworlder. They are cultural icons of adventure, exploration and many Eldar youth will leave the sanctuary of the Craftworld to travel the stars with a Corsair band. Most return but many are insatiably attached to the Path of Corsair becoming professional Corsairs.
Corsairs will always flock to where the next Eldar great war is waged like locusts to a corpse. Such coalitions are usually temporary and Corsair bands are known to fight each other. The Eldar Corsair treads a spectrum of shifting allegiances, and level of corruption. Some are practically an extension of their Craftworld, like Yriel's Eldritch Raiders is to Iyanden or Xian's Black Raiders is to Uthwe, while others are freelancing pirates who hold no allegiance to anyone and merely seek to sate the thirst for bloodshed and the joy of stellar exploration.
Coalitions of Corsairs have appeared at major Eldar events since the Fall. An armada of Corsairs fought with Eldrad Ulthran at Haramarash against the forces of Chaos, another at Bentalis with Alaitoc and Mymeara. The coalition of Corsairs is an ubiquitous timeless formation composed of myriad Corsair bands.
This is just one coalition...
The Void Dragons tread the dangerous twilight between the Dark Kin and the Eldar. Their power and competence in battle is respected by both and they are hired as mercenaries by Kabals, Craftworlds and even humans. They are not above outcontracting their dirty work and supplementing their own forces with alien mercenaries. Their fleet has participated in countless battles and is never idle. The Void Dragons are forever raiding Imperial settlements for slaves to trade and attacking Imperial convoys for their materials. Their fleet is estimated well above 3,500.
The Sky Raiders is the second largest Corsair warband. Their level of violence and bloodthirst is perilously close to that of the Dark Kin and they are regarded with some suspicion. However, they make useful allies if only to tap into their vast manpower. They were decimated in the aftermath of the Bentalis campaign.
The Sunblitz Brotherhood is actually an improper translation into Gothic, for Sunblitz is a complex Eldar concept that human minds cannot grasp. The Sunblitz Brotherhood is a very well armed Corsair warband that has thrived from trade with the Craftworlds. They are a close ally of Alaitoc and fought alongside Alaitoc forces and Rangers for many centuries.
The plight of Iyanden at the hands of both Hive Fleet Kraken and WAAGH Rekkfist has been a call to arms to the Eldar, causing many to flock to its aid. Biel-tan and Alaitoc have notably sent aspect warriors to bolster Iyanden's defence. But the greatest contribution to Iyanden was the timely arrival of Yriel's Eldritch Raiders. The Council of Farseers convened following the siege and decided to reinstate Yriel as High Admiral of Iyanden along with all the trappings of an Autarch. His Eldritch Raiders corsairs were given new status too. Iyanden desperate for any manpower would not shun away such a potent force, the Raiders had already shown their valour, skill at arms and initiative. Thus they were instated as the proxy expeditionary fleet of Iyanden. Quasi-privateer and military venture entrepreneurs, the Eldritch Raiders wander the Saggitarius Arm sometimes with their legendary leader at the helm hunting the remnants of Hive Fleet Kraken and plunder Mon'keigh. Their colour scheme is a dark blue with secondaries in yellow (helmet, kneepads etc) with black tiger stripes to break up and disrupt. Dark blue is a natural camouflage at night, when they often strike, it is a terrifying and shocking sight as a blur of barely understandable flashes of yellow descend upon the foe; little else is visible. They use Iyanden military equipment, lent, bought or acquired by some means, which remain in the traditional colours of yellow and blue and display the decal of Iyanden.

Updates:
07/10/11 - Corsair Conversion Kit and first Wasp has arrived this afternoon. Will begin work once the rest of my kit arrives. The Wasp is pretty damn good quality and will look awesome once my kit arrives.
11/10/11 - GW still has not delivered the Battleforce and my modelling kit (should have just bought it from the store >.<) However, Ive spent a good few hours working all the pieces out, how I will paint them and so on.
Edit: It arrived later today. YES! Finally.
Edit2: Accidentally lopped off a bit too much off the weapon mounts. Improvised.
12/10/11 - Rest of Eldar army arrived, currently assembling, painting undercoat black. The Warhost GROWS!
13/10/11 - Wasp and 6 Corsairs finished. 2 of them are "Dire Avenger" parts.
14/10/11 - Will model a War Walker today and compare with the Wasp.
17/10/11 - War Walker finished. See image for contrast vs Wasp.
31/10/11 - Wasp took an umpty dumpty fall and his weapon improvisation mounts broke off. Fixing it is a bit of a nightmare but after many hours in the wee hours of the morning itsnearly done.
02/11/11 - Dire Avengers nearly done. Wasp fixed. Malefactor Warlock done. 2 Wasps arrived today in the post.
03/11/11 - Whoever was on quality control for my new Wasps was clearly drunk or asleep. The lower leg joint was filled with resin, and Im missing half the resin kit.
04/11/11 - DAs done just 5 of them.
05/11/11 - FW is sending me a new kit. Completed 2nd Wasp. The Wasp Wave Serpent-style weapon mounts are EXTREMELY fragile. Because they are resin and the weapon attachment bit is off axis it is very weak. Broke it again on the second Wasp and had to perma-glue the weapons to the Wasps... Very disappointed.
07/11/11 - FW Customer Services sent me a priority package today. Invoice read 1p. An ENTIRE free Wasp + war walker parts kit.... :O
22/11/11 - I havent forgotten, Ive been pretty busy IRL, and recently with Skyrim :P. Entire army photo uploaded
08/01/12 - Work resumes after being away for a month.
17/01/12 - Corsair Venom in Void Dragon colours finished
22/01/12 - Additional corsair squad, Voidstorms, and Bladesworn built but unpainted.

Phase 1 complete. Note: Iyanden military equipment is painted in Iyanden colours (Shurican and WW) but piloted and manned by corsairs.

War Walker (Iyanden) vs Wasp Assault Walker (Eldritch Raiders). The Wasp is only taller because of the custom fit legs. The WW's yellow is in fact a different shade to the Iyanden Darksun used on the Wasp. Blues are the same. Manned by Corsair pilots.

Razorwing/Serpent Corsairs (some corsairs have different arm bands. Green signifies they came from Biel Tan, yellow from Iyanden. Its basically to denote batch numbers as I used different techniques for each batch)

I am very happy with the execution of the colour scheme. With the right lighting and angle all you can see is the yellow bits in confusing shapes and sizes and the rest are indistinguishable. Would be pretty terrifying to have these guys launch an aerial assault at night. I will definately get the Heavy/Special Weapon Corsair kit with EML, Shurican, Flamer and Fusion gun.

Heres how I did the under mounted Shuriken Catapults. Take the Splinter Cannon, cut it two thirds along, it produces a perfectly fitting pivot for the twin linked shuriken catapults found on Wave Serpents.

Hornets/Vypers (waiting on the jury for this one, Hornets being AWESOME and all that)
Fixed that for you =]
They look absolutely amazing, although the pulse lasers to have a tendency to bend a little but that's nothing a bit of warm water and time cant fix.
-
Do you anticipate them being nerfed? They seem so awesome that they might be inevitably toned down.
@Mod - I wasnt really sure where to place my thread, it has an army list, project photos and other things in it... Shall I make two threads?
-
Khorne25, this looks great and I'm really looking forward to seeing all the updates.
Keep it up!
Iyanden forever!!!
-
Hi all,
An update.
Ive begun assembling the Wasp.
I made a biiiiigg mistake and chopped off one of the crucial joints. It resembles a two ball joints each with a stick poking out (in opposite directions). However, I managed to do some improvisation.
Pictures inbound.
Edit: Some general points about the Wasp kit. Its fantastic, the legs are all non fixed unlike the plastic WW allowing you to sculpt your Wasp and pose it. I chose to have both feet firmly on the ground, I know others have made it fly. Some plastic bits needed to be renovated, ie cut off for things to fit on, things like the massive stabilisation dorsal fin at the back, a small gem had to be scraped off the plastic bit that it connceted to. Other than that the resin kit fits like a charm.
-
nice stuff so far,I will keep an eye on this one!
-
UPDATED:
War Walker in Iyanden's colours compared to a Wasp Assault Walker in the Eldritch Raider colour scheme.
-
Interesting stuff there, registering to this thread to see how this is going.
Keep up the good work Khorne25. ;)
Starky
-
Nice start - looking forwards to more of the same! ;)
-
An update 11/11/11
The Corsairs Heavy Weapons and Special Weapons kit has arrived.
What I didnt realise was that they sent a Guardian sprue as well - which is great, because now it is definately worth £16.
I have a lot of other updates coming up. Some already completed. Stay tuned for:
- Seer Council
- Corsair HW/SW team
- 4 Wasps!
- 2 Wave Serpents
- Fire Prisms (if I have the time)
- Stormies
- 2 Vypers
-
Very Cool I love the army and classic colors, My Eldar army at the moment is actually the same thing (Eldritch Raiders) but im doing a over all gold color scheme with black and dark red details.
-
great work as far and quite similer in my plans :P any room for the spectres? :P they look very roguish in my opinion :P
ill keep watching this thread your background is also a great start and would love to read about the history of this formidable army i really hope our new units dont get toned down as i feel eldar could use every bit of help
-
Hi all,
Thanks for posts.
I wont be updating till mid January - still working on my vehicles and so on.
Spectres are definately on the list to do.
-
nice look forward to it
-
I've abstained from commenting on ia11 because I just don't have it yet! However I know enough to begin planning for my corsairs
I'm going to focus on getting a working corsairs army using fw's army list and neglecting my craftworld pieces a bit.
First, before I start kit bashing out a corsair prince, bladesworn and void storms I'm going to email fw they are going to release kits for them. Likely I'll convert one squad of storm guardians with jet packs.
Second, I'm going to Get another squad of corsairs and give them las lawyers. My first batch had shuriken catapults. Will also be getting another heavy/special weapons squad
Third, I'm off to get a squad of kabalite warriors and maybe two venoms. Falcons I'll probably play test with wave serpents count as corsair falcons.
Fourth two more warp hunters are going to be ordered, and my fire prism will be changed to night spinner - I actually have pieces for two turrets.
So that's my agenda, probably be refined when I get IA11.
-
Khorne can I ask why you gave the first squad Shuriken catapaults? Las-blasters are nicer looking weapons in my opinion AND they are better weapons than the standard Shuriken Catapault.... for models with Corsair stats they are better weapons full stop anyhow!!
If I can help you with any queries you have about the book don't hestitate to PM me and I'll do my best to answer the questions without breaking the rules ;).
Looking forward to your next update... Maybe I will post my craftworld as a project given that It's reasonably underway but there is still a lot of work.
-
I first used shuriken catapults because of the logic with fusion guns. If my squad all has 12" guns then its simple stuff to judge and use them more effectively. Lasblaster + fusion guns would be inefficient compared to shuriken catas + fusion guns.
This was before IA11 etc...
I forgot from my list:
- Hornet
- Shadow Spectres + Irryileth
-
Third, I'm off to get a squad of kabalite warriors and maybe two venoms. Falcons I'll probably play test with wave serpents count as corsair falcons.
Where is it you get kabalite warriors from? ive been unsucessful on finding them?! and the beast riders? as alot of corsair fluff talks of how they ride beasts rather then jetbikes?

Warriors are a troop choice from the Dark Eldar line. You biy them anywhere that sells GW products.
-
yeah i reliased that once i had posted it haha duh to me! can u mix DE & E troops? :s
-
can u mix DE & E troops? :s
A Corsair army can include Kabalite Warriors and Craftworld Eldar to a limited extent.
-
Hi all,
Wanted to let everyone know I am back at home. Definately alive and kicking.
Work on my corsairs resumes!
The agenda:
New stuff just ordered
10 Corsairs
10 Voidstorms (storm guardian conversion)
1 Void Dreamer conversion
IA11 (to come on the 23rd)
Existing stuff to be painted
1 Warp Hunter
1 Nightspinner
Longer term agenda (1-2 months):
3 Wasps (EVEN MOAR)
1 Firestorm
1 Warp Hunter
1 Hornet
-
Good to hear things are coming along. I think the voidstorm squad will be a cool build, but may end up spending a lot of time looking good on the shelf rather than on the table. Before you put them together as a voidstorm squad, read your copy of IA11. You may end up wanting to use them as normal corsairs.
Post some pictures of the Warp Hunter and Nightspinner when you get them done.
I like that you used the old Yriel's Raiders color scheme. Reminds me of the Book of the Astronomican!
-
Hi thanks for you reply!
It is my intention to eventually have practically all the unit options of the Corsairs army list.
Im not too fussed if the Voidstorms sit on the shelf in the end because of the above and also because I want to playtest all avenues of the Corsairs army list.
Paint scheme wise, I will also be using other colour schemes. Im not sure if I mentioned but part of the reason of the rename of my thread to Coalition of Corsairs is that I will be using other colour schemes - which ones I havent decided yet. Obviously, Im going to have to try to ensure they dont conflict and annoy my opponent's eyes. But I do love my Yriel's Raiders - old school FTW.
PS My Nightspinner is a standard GW one not the special FW one - which looks really cool.

Costructed from an Autarch, Fusion Pistol from a Corsair Felarch and Corsair Wings.
Had to trim down the corsair jetpack a bit and I lopped off the Autarch's wings on his helmet.
Should I kept the Autarch rune on his helmet? Doesnt make sense to me...
-
I'd file off the rune and replace it with a Yriel's Raiders logo.
Alternately, perhaps lopping off the head entirely and replacing it with something from the Dark Eldar line would give him a little more character.
Looks good though!

Thoughts on the colour scheme?

Heres how I did the under mounted Shuriken Catapults. Take the Splinter Cannon, cut it two thirds along, it produces a perfectly fitting pivot for the twin linked shuriken catapults found on Wave Serpents.

The useless Veteran Corsair Voidstorms - just being abusive to my lads.
And the much better loooking (and therefore better on board!) Bladesworn. If only there were Incubi equivalent.
These will all have jetpacks eventually.

If you don't want your voidstorms, I'll be more than happy to take them off your hands. They look great and earned their keep for me. ;)

As a slight deviation and distraction, here is a Dark Kin alligned Corsair Prince (or basically Duke Sliscus)

Or with Dagger

I prefer the wings, but this is coming from the guy whose HQs both have Fairy Wings on their jump packs.
If you're looking for little cat things to represent a Gyrinx, check out Reaper's familiars. You can buy them individually from Hoard 'o Bits on eBay.

Genius. Those are brilliant familiars esp Familiar Pack VIII because they dont have bases.
Just ordered some, I think they will add a very nice fantasy feel to the Corsairs. A lot more piratey.
Ive taken a bit of a rest from Corsairs and have been painting some Dark Eldar.
Here is a sneak peak of my Trueborn "Mercenaries". These four are my custom Trueborn with Blasters, Shardcarbines, Close Combat weapons and Scourge helmets. Bases are Fantascape.

Please don't double post, it's against the forum rules - Iris.

What have you used for the bases? is that cork?
looking good :D

The models look nice, but it's hard to comment on the paint scheme with the lighting setup you have. A piece of white paper for a backdrop and drawing the shades on most windows on a bright day will give you a nice even lighting for photos without the need for any fancy lightbox setup.

Voidrazor Dragonwing
Decals to be added and some clean up work to be done. I love the model so much Im going to buy another one but replace the Dark Lances with Brightlances and have two underslung Shuriken Cannon - then it can proxy as a Nightwing

Missiles arent glued on so they can be removed. I plan on changing the oval base to a custom one and added a small box to store "fired" missiles.

I have decided to migrate my project to a new clean start with new fluff and new photos seperate from my old thread of corsairs. This can be locked up and closed.
[mod]You know that it's against the rules to double post, so please don't do it. As for locking the thread, for future reference, please note that you can do that yourself, but I've done it for you on this occasion - Iris.[/mod]
