Title: Spring Painting Challenge [Month 1/3 GALLERY ADDED - can now be locked]
Post by: SeriousCallersOnly on March 4, 2007, 03:36:14 PM
ALL VOWS MUST BE IN BY MARCH 10th

Welcome to the March Painting Challenge. We are now into the 2nd year of these, first under Loydb, Khemri Demon and now me. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.

I'll list vows made, name and praise those that make it and name and shame those that don't.

You can expect to be 'reminded' of your vow around the 20th of the month if we don't see any further posts after you make the vow.

I'll also compile a gallery of completed vow photos before the thread is locked at the end of the month, so don't just claim a vow is complete, show us!

This one will run for March, April and May. (Note that this is three one-month challenges, not one three-month challenge.)

A squad, for the purpose of definition, would be anything that counted as a unit choice (e.g. HQ, Elite, Troop, etc.). This includes retinue for the independant char (e.g. familiars, bodyguards, etc.). I'd personally like to see multi-model squads -- the purpose of the challenge is to get a bunch of lead painted in a 3-month period -- but maybe you're planning on doing a kickass conversion/paint job for an army leader, nothing wrong with that.

RULES

1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.

3. The model doesn't have to be texture based -- but the base must be painted.

4. Vows in parenthesis/brackets are essentially maybes and therefore won't count towards a fail if you don't do them.

Painting Challenge FAQ

Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows. Since Warmachine doesn't use squads in the same way that 40K does, I suggest that it be at least a 3-man squad (Menoth Choir, etc.), or a warcaster + at least one warjack.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

Q: I want to paint a squad of Howling Banshees and a single Ranger. Is the Ranger legal?
A: Yes. The "must count as a troop choice" rule establishes the minimum. Anything above that doesn't have to conform, it's just bonus.

Q: When is the closing date?
A: The month runs with the calendar month. Vows freeze on the 11th.

Whew, I was getting worried...This is gonna be my year! I'm gonna fulfil my vow every month for this year! Starting with!

A 10-Man Black Templar Marine Squad.

I have 5 prepped at the moment, another five I'll probably do tonight, and I'll prime and start painting at some point this week...

I have a Chaplain and Terminator Chaplain arrived from eBay at some point this week too, but they'll be saved for a later vow.

As for this 1st month I will not be doing a complete "squad" from start to finish but rather going back and reworking a number of older models...

My pledge is to have at least a 500pt playable Dark Eldar army finished to my new higher standards of painting. (This includes of course 2 Troops and a single HQ).

all painted up in Blood Angels colors.

For now, I'm planning on doing a Whirlwind/Rhino, 2006 Games Day model (The Dwarf Slayer), Space Marine, and DA sergeant.  I'll probably get these done, then start to work on the others, but this is it so far.

@ SeriousCallersOnly: I thought you were going to retire from running these challenges, then 4 minutes later, you start another one up. I'll take over if you want for next month.

I vow to paint my primarch model and 4 wraiths. I promised my girlfriend I wouldn't buy anything this month so I've gotta work with what I haven't finished yet.

I vow to finish the Kasrkin Box and two Melta-Kasrkins i bought last summer. Just one problem, i already started and im 25% done. Can i still vow? I'm a very slow painter, trust me  ;D.

So thats:
1 Sergeant (needs to be based)
7 Kasrkin with hellguns (2 are done)
1 Kasrkin with flamer
1 Kasrkin with grenadelauncher
2 Kasrkin with meltaguns (both halfway painted)

*inhales deeply*

Just started playing w40k and I've already started to procrastinate on painting them. I've just started to prime them:

1 Autarch
5 Dire Avengers
5 Rangers
5 Fire Dragons
1 Wraithlord

That should do it for my 500 pt army.

I vow to paint an inquisitor with a retinue consisting of 2 warriors, an acolyte and a sage. I will be painting the inquisitor for a painting comp so I will not have so much time to paint other stuff but I'll try to paint the (6 rouge riders)

btw, you didn't mention my name when you said who had compleated all winter challenges ( ::))

Looks like a lot of folks just waiting for the thread to open. I'll vow a raider (last months raider in fact) with a squad of 10 warriors.

@ Marshall George, yep I'll retire from running it, from next month though, as I didn't want anyone to feel that I was dumping on it till I had a replacement sorted out. Thanks for the offer - Kitzune Tsuki / Aoki Flamme had offered already. Thanks for the support though. If these things look like flagging, I know someone will step up.

@ Harlean: Sorry if I missed you there

And possibly a wolf priest (but no promises)

@ Celephus - what has happened to the Night lords or the dwarves that you so desperately want complete for summer?

All primed and assembled but no paint yet. Here we go...

Here we go I failed miserable in the Autumn one, and I want a smiley face this time.

3x Vypers
3x War Walkers

and I am going to get more done as well, but I think that should be enough for the challenge.

Great to here the challenges will continue, and thanks Serious for organising them the last few seasons. I can honestly say that I would only paint half as much as th pittance I do if it weren't for the challenges.

OK, I pledge

1 x Dominion Squad (6 SOB's)
1 x exorcist attachment (strictly speaking that is modeling and painting)

That will get me to 1500 points in time for the 40k online UK tournament at the end of the month..

This is just a post to let you guys know what happened to me.

My internet has been cut off for the moment. Seems like I had free internet for 3 years. Even so I did complete and fullfill my vow on time. I had already uploaded the photos but didn't have acces to internet after that to post the results. So here is the sentinel which  had vowed to complete last month.

Seeing as i am very very very very behind on my painting (30 Khorne Bezerkers, 2 Leman Russ BT & 1 Vanquisher, 90% of my Tau army,
2 battle forces of Nids, a battle force of Necrons & Destroyer Lord i just got and the new DA Battleforce. I know i know im a glutton for punishment.. but the models are soo purdy  :o ) Anywho with it still being winterish here and the temp going up and down like a yo-yo ( its 7 today and will be 50's sat ) id like to start on my DA or crons but im not going to count on the weather. Plus my time is very very very limited.

so ill start small and vow to finish my walking tyrant with VC & BS
things ill additionally be working on if possible.
-some Termagaunts
-some Hormagants
-DA Rhino ( seeing as did my beautiful Khorne Rhino in 3 days its do-able )

for now the Tyrant

My eventual goal (commence your laughter) is to have 500-1k of Necrons & DA painted to play small games and as much of my 1500 point Nid army painted as possible by summer.

I have 65 guardsmen, 10 heavy weapons teams, a Leman Russ Demolisher and a chimera that have all been primed, and their first basic coat of color. I pledge to have all of these completely finished by the end of the challenge. I am going out on a limb, but spring break is upon me and I find myself with 8 hours a day to paint for the next 5 days. I will triumph over these guardmen!

and my first test banshee, pretty standard scheme, but as it are the colours of my craftworld but yust the opposide, I don't think thats a bad thing  :)

Update from me. Progress is mixed, some things are taking longer than expected or being awkward but it the force is progressing. Got a few piccies as well.

As I said this vow is just to refresh my army and bring it back up to scratch. The first 500pts includes a Raider Squad, Warrior Squad, Wyches and a Dracon.

First, the Raider squad. Here's an example of what my warriors looked like before:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FDarkEldarWarriorsmall.jpg&hash=cf0767de52cbec28a1fb1a23adb820e6f4fa5802)

And an updated Syberite:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3178.jpg&hash=50eefde1f736fc8ec67d835fdc4f1e6f16a171a9)
What has been done? Well, rebased for a start. They now fit in much better with my home board and also look like a unit. The previous bases were very patchy and tbh just in general bad condition. The skin tones have been redone, as has the Trophy Rack. Apart from that I've added in eyes in Camo Green and the compression chambers have also been painted camo green with the white added to help give the feeling of glass. They might reviece a spot of varnish at some point.

As part of the Raider Squad the Raider has been updated. It now sits on a base properly. And speaking of bases, I got tired of transparent flying bases so decided to model them. Here's the one for the Raider Squad.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3184.jpg&hash=320e8932002e112c1bbabeb27aecadd747893787)

And now a quick pick of the whole squad:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3191.jpg&hash=8492580511dd4c6a4ef5a352e230169df96a97d6)

Wyches before:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3203.jpg&hash=275b4fabb4b45771b5ea98be705a1a321f86e3ad)

Wyches after:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3209.jpg&hash=22546c153de5aae7005092394217aa1426c106ae)

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3205.jpg&hash=66c378c370239704203f80d25eb0c000de973c5a)

5 coats of pallid flesh. Mental note: Base wyches white first. So yeah, they took a while but I am very happy with the results.

Whats left to do? The Wyches Raider is currently a WIP, although its gone to the naughty model time out box because it wasn't going right. I will return to it in a while and tackle it with a fresh mind. Here's a quick WIP shot of it however:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3220.jpg&hash=982775d708fd04391d133c70a545cf9d414769ef)

Apart from that, I've just started 10 more warriors and then it will be just my lord left to do.

Not too big a fan on the back of the cape, however, it's honestly the best I can do, damn unsteady hands of mine and I never fully realized how chuncky the shield is.

Thanks SVD for the love. those Kasrkin are looking good as well.

Landspeeder will be started tomorrow. Although it wont be finished as I need to do some modelling on it to incorporate magnets so I can hot swap the assault cannon and heavy flamer.

Well. my unit dragons are pretty far done, and the falcon is done, I can't take any pictures this week instead of saturday, so no new pics this month I'm afraid, but they only need 10 min each so I think I did my vow pretty well (as I normaly don't paint more than 3 models of an army).
here are the pics:

I'll be the first to announce my failure (again) this month. Haven't painted a thing. No excuse, but blame the DA battleforce I got a couple of weeks ago and decided to fully magnetise. I'll be back on and motivated next month (and probably through to the summer) with some new DA gear painting up as Angels of Vengeance or Consecrators.

Aoki Flamme: You still on for taking over running the challenges next month so I can retire? If not, we'll open it up to anyone else to take it up.

Yeah.  I'm going to do it.  I generally start the thread the day before the actual month.

I also have finished my vow, but been too lazy to take pictures.

I too will be failing my vow. Work + overtime + Gf = negative free time.
Not that i havent been painting my tyrant its just hard to do a whole lot when you get 10-15 min of free time inbetween other things. That and im stuck on what to do for the carapaces, i dont understand the streaking of the carapace.

Oh well maybe next month. Maybe next month my vow will be simplified to taking everything off the sprue :D i do have 4 battleforces sitting here.

Maybe by the time i get to my Crons the new codex will be out  ::)

Well, I almost did it.  ::)

I have so far finished 19 Warriors, 5 Wyches, 1 Raider and a Dracon. The only thing still unfinished is a second Raider. I had numerous issues with painting this Raider and after 3 attempts I gave up. It is now waiting for me to get my behind down the local GW and get some more undercoat so I can start from scratch.  That said, I've got pictures of everything I did finish...

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3245.jpg&hash=e004c025c7c21f465cd7b428c9690560f714e6c8)
The whole army, now looking much better with bases that are of a much higher quality and actually fit with my board.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3237.jpg&hash=83ba04d65cc0ee41d0e94ec4db5f33c3e77a5f23)
Raider Squad

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3239.jpg&hash=c7245e9082acbbfadc0c49c18140ba080c3c2e89)
Warrior Squad

All my warriors recieved slight updates, the guns were reworked as were the blades. I also added eyes to all of them. Skin tones were redone on all models. And they were of course rebased.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv340%2FPreacherNoki%2FIMG_3235.jpg&hash=02f0095d8a318a5a413955c3101d382e88ab2ca9)
Alot of work went into the wyches and I essentially had to start from scratch with them. Anyone who wonders what they looked like before I started can look here (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v340/PreacherNoki/IMG_3203.jpg) or here (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v340/PreacherNoki/IMG_3204.jpg)(although I take no responsibility for loss of eye sight). I am very happy with how this unit turned out and I think it just goes to show that given a decent paint job these old models don't look half bad. ;)

Well, here's hoping that next month I get my challenge completed and manage to complete the Raider I failed to do this time.

Failed again. Although half got done this time... which is a change.

Reason (excuse) for not completing the speeder - well Deathklaat summed it up really. Exact same for me... other than I spent a day doing blood claw bikers. They won't count will they?... Nah though not.

i will post up pics some point tomorrow

Commander Qupie:  those Fire Dragons look great.  Interresting color scheme.
Archon No'Ki:  Great looking DE.  The raider looks great.

lot of red going around this month.

Antiphon:  nice banner.

Well, I've done 20 out of thirty fire warriors so far.  What is all this talk about failure?  did I miss the deadline.  we still have a couple of days no?  I'll be damned if I fail again.  when is the actual deadline?

BTW, how strict are we on the basing.  Usually I base all my minis last in a codex grey and graveyard earth scheme.  Its pretty quick and easy.  However, since the fatigues of these dudes are codex grey, I think i need to change the base scheme to get a little contrast in there.  as my board is grey I'm not sure I want to change it too drastically as i'd like them to still fit in.  I think I'd like to use some static grass.  I don't want to rush my decision though.  Can I count s'ept markings as basing  or something?  perhaps I'll just do it grey and change it later.

The rule Loydb used to use for basing was at least painted, even if its black - i.e. clean up the paint splodges. Certainly a quick coat of grey would be fine.

My camera seems to be better at taking closeups than distance shots.  I'll work on getting better shots at a distance once I have them all done.  10 more to go!  so when is the deadline?  the 1st?

I'm done! No pictures as of yet, but I'll try to get them up soon. I now have 10 Black Templar Initiates sat on my shelf, with extra fancy weapons, ready to be joined by next months vow. They're currently unbased, but thats only because I haven't decided which kind of base to have... ???

i have decided to auto fail my vow now so that i can continue painting them to a standard i am happy with rather than rush to get them done in 3 days.

i will enter another squad next month and add any left overs from this squad to that.

I guess i didnt quite make it, i made huge steps in finishing the squad though. Here are the pics from the end of this month. I have almost everything done besides the two specialweapons and three lasguns. Just finished basing them. I failed miserably, but maybe next month it will work. I already have an idea what i can do after i finished these kasrkin.

Done!  My first completed challenge out of like five or six trys!

30 fire warriors.  This was awful tough for me.  I never paint that much so quickly.  as each dude has three coats of red gore over a coat of midnight blue, that is 90 coats of red gore and 120 all together on the armor alone.  not including highlights.  Yeesh.  just finished last night/this morning....then painted the living room of my apartment...then went and based them.  the basing is just a real quick job.  I'll probably re do it at some point.  There is still plenty to do on these models -Sept markings on the squad leaders ( I couldn't figure out how I wanted to denote their leader status), most of the little metal things at the ends of the barrels (couldn't decide on the right color gold), work on their feetskys, etc.  But they are quite done for now.

anywho:
the whole bunch  (sorry the pics are a bit darkish,  i'm hit or miss with my camera.  updated with better pics.)

though challenging I thought this was very fun and I am happy that I did it.  I never would have gotten this many troops done so fast otherwise.  I would have most likely painted 12 and then moved on to the Stealth suits or something.  Now I have all my troops done and i can start in on some of the fun stuff.

Finally got the rest of my jetbike squadron yesterday. Spent most of last night on them, and got the four remaining bikers and my warlock conversion primed and ready to paint.

With the exception of Warlock, I have been painting the bikes and riders separately, and I've also been leaving the cowling off of the bikes while they are being painted. I had some trouble getting the rider's arms to fit the handlebars with the first two bikes I did, so I am going to try painting the arms separately as well this time, and see if that works better.

I'm a bit behind where I would like to be at this point, and I have an intimidating pile of unpainted bits at the moment, but I should be able to get them finished before the end of the month.
