I'll ask around and spread the word as always!

Right, if anyone playing against Lor'eal disputes a rule with him they can call me over and I'll rule against him no matter what the rule actually is.

I'm certainly interested. Despite being pretty much retired from 40konline, it would be nice to see some of you again.  I'll have a chat with Tarrin and a the rest of Team Splan and see if we can get a posse along.

Post by: Killing Time on May 16, 2013, 08:00:31 AM
Good to see a lot of interest already.
It would be good to get a full complement of 40konliners.

Obviously the only way to reserve your ticket is to actually buy one.
So far the only place this is being advertised is here. I intend to leave it that way for the next month to give the forum the maximum opportunity to get tickets. After that it'll be opened up to the local Bristol community to give them second dibs.

With 40 places on offer I'm hopeful we can get 30+ from the forum.
So far only Benis has actually bought a ticket...

Due to paypal charges the ticket price will be £14.
We think this is still a very reasonable price for a 4 game tournament so take any complaints to Hymirl....[/size]

My care face is standing by.

I've massed out the tournament pack to everyone from last years purchase list along with a link here and direct to the payment page... I have somehow managed to spell Killing_Times e-mail wrong - so if you have any questions for him they'll need to be directed here (which is probably best anyway).

There were a few delivery failures so I'll be on those trying to track down correct contacts (I may just have mis-copied the address).

This year, Hymirl and Alex have decided to add in army ratings - which should be pretty interesting. Its a good way to filter out gamers so that you will be playing against like minded individuals for the first few rounds at least....

Just had a read through the pack. The ADR rules are... interesting...
I'm sure they definitely won't be used to push a person's personal prejudice against a Codex.. ;)

Might be useful to submit a few lists early to get an idea of what scores highly. One man's theme or army full of cool looking models is another man's power gamey army of cheesey death..!

I can assure you that this won't be used in any such prejudicial manner.
It's just a new format on comp scoring that has enough flexibility to deal with the fluffy lists that can get dinged by a more rigid comp scoring system, and also means that you can turn up with a nasty list and still win... as long as you back yourself to beat all the other filth lists in the tournament too without getting any easy rides in the early rounds.

Obviously what we're looking to avoid here are triple heldrake lists, leafblowers with 3 full supporting vendetta squadrons, or anyone claiming Eldrad and 5 naked dire avengers is fluffy as an allied detachment for Grey Knights.
Each list will be looked at objectively by myself, Hymirl and a neutral third party whose identity will remain anonymous (at least until they've been recruited).

I assure you that no-one is going to get punished for using the wrong codex.
We just want the definition of friendly to be "everyone has a good time" rather than "I'm bringing filth, but I promise to shake your hand and smile cheerfully while I'm crushing you."

Though, whereas you've said lists will be looked at objectively, the pack says subjectively...

I'm objective! Seriously though, its not designed to penalise everyone it's there to help people play the kind of event they want to play, a game where you steamroller your opponent as you have a hardcore net list against something soft and fluffier than Agnes' unicorn isn't that much fun for either party. Hopefully we can reduce this in the random draw rounds.
Players looking for more competitive games get that kind of game, players looking to play themed armies against other themed armies can get that kind of game, we get a very mixed collection of players coming to this event so I think it's fair to cater for all.

In other news, the venue called me to say the hall we're using is closed for refubishment. So theyve given us access to their huge main school hall at no extra cost. It's real nice, gothic vaulted ceiling, a stage and everything, they hire this hall out for weddings!

I'm objective!

 ???

Heh, no I understand and approve fully of the intention. I just think it's hard to be objective about and to know where the lines are drawn. I could write up a 10 page history of every major engagement of my Necron aerial assault legion including individual call-signs, kill tallies & pilot traits caused by faulty programming. But to someone else that's just Nightscythe flyer spam and should be hit with a huge composition bat.

Also the phrase "known power codex" is concerning...

The Great hall at Bristol Grammar is pretty damn cool. :D

I think the pack looks great, I'm planning on bringing a reasonably competitive but by no means out and out WAAC list and I do wonder how well it will cope with that as I'm not sure how many people will come with armies balanced in a similar fashion to mine, but the system seems likely to achieve that, and I think it's perfect for the 40KO tournament which is very definitely a mixed beast where this is concerned. I've never known anyone to come before who brought a more fluffy list and came up against a hard-core comp list to have enjoyed themselves as much as they could have and I think this is a great idea which more tournaments could do with using because I think it will make a far more substantive contribution to people's enjoyment than trying to "fix" the game with huge errata documents you have to comply with when list-writing.

Thumbs up here, really looking forward to the event, will pay this evening.

That's ok, I don't read fanfic anyhow! ;D

At the end of the day it won't actually make that big a deal, it's not like anyone gets penalty points or anything it's just 'less random' matchups to kick off with. I basically made up this comp system in the pub so I'm as interested as everyone else if it works or not.

I have no doubt some stuff will slip through, and someone will declare they're hard done by, no comp system is perfect and new codexes make it tricky to spot latest uber lists anyhow. But what it will prevent is things we've seen previously where people turn up with triple dreadknight lists and totally pound casual players in their first two games of the day.

The ADR rules were written with tongue firmly in cheek.
Try not to get over-worried about the wording. All we're really going to do is sit down and try our best to ensure everyone gets an appropriate match for their first couple of games; tough vs tough and fluff vs fluff.

Sign up people! Time's a ticking!

I'm a big fan of the principle!

Although I will undoubtedly get the short end of the stick with the army I hope to be able to bring along... I don't want to share any more than that at this point in time - One of the big troubles I have is that I can play a WAAC army and am still pretty much bad enough to lose! (its odd though, cos my Tau which were traditionally definately not a WAAC army has a great winning record!)

my name seems to have fell off the list of attendees.

I tidied up the list to include only those people who have purchased a ticket.
Since we've been upgraded to the great hall at the School it looks like we're going to have ample space to fit anyone who wants to come, so there won't be a limit on the number of tickets we can sell (within reason).
HOWEVER
We do need to pay the fees for the school hire soon so we'd very much appreciate it if those who are intending to come but haven't yet paid would do so as quickly as possible (ie MOST OF YOU).

I'll try to make it down to the Vanguard this Thursday so can take cash then.
Otherwise we'd like money asap so if you can find a friendly paypal account that would be best.

The paypal link is in my GFs name and she has been away, so I haven't updated recently.
That said, take-up has been very slow this year, so yes, I don't expect more than 14-15 sign-ups at most.
We're trying to drum up some extra support from the locals, so hopefully we might hit 20, which would be nice because that's the number we need to break even.

If there are still those who wish to come but haven't paid, DO SO NOW.
These tournaments aren't cheap to run, and given the high level of interest to start I'm quite disappointed with the the lack of support to date.

You can put one in now if you like. :)
It'll be factored into the draw.

Okay then, I'd like to challenge Benis! Otherwise there's no guarantee that I'll get to play against him!

First army list is in.
First challenge is issued (and accepted).

Looks like we might have a tournament on our hands.

I meant to reply to this earlier, but sometimes life (and my poor organisation) gets in the way.

Sadly, I can't make it along this year, as the event clashes with a pre-booked holiday. I would have loved to get back, having had a great time last year  :-\

Happy gaming, everyone!

Gah, we have to email by Wednesday yeah? I still haven't decided what I'm taking yet!

14 guys paid? That's not so bad- can have a decent tournie out of that :D
Is that enough to break even then?

There are last minute plans afoot to change to a smaller venue so we should be ok for cash.
Updates will be posted in good time.

Yes, Wednesday.

I don't suppose anyone else has put their name down?

(I still appear twice, by the way, so we might have an odd number.)

There are a few more locals who may/may not be coming.
We might conceivably hit 20, probably more like 16/17.

If you need someone to chip in and help you break even on the hall price, I'd be happy to spot you the cost of, erm, missing participants' tickets if that would help.

Well, changing the venue this close to the event may present problems if people still show up at the old venue. That'll lead to a lot of unhappy players. :(

IMPORTANT UPDATE

The venue for this year's tournament has changed.
We will now be at:

Vanguard Wargaming
188 Hotwells Road,
Hotwells,
Bristol
BS8 4RP

This is about a 5 minute drive from the previous venue so hopefully it won't mess with anyone's travel plans too much at all.
Also it's a dedicated wargaming facility, so we'll be in good hands throughout the day.

Didn't realise Vanguard was big enough for a tournie.
Good though having dedicated facilities rather than a school hall.

I will have to walk an extra 15 minutes though  >:(
lol.

The new venue is quite small, with a maximum of 24 players.
But it's a far more appropriate space for the number we have, and a far more appropriate price too.

There are quite a few places to park, they're just a bit hidden.
I'll post a map.

nah nothing serious. going to reading fest on Friday and working on Sunday so it not really viable to go to the tournament as its 7 hours of driving. plus I forgot that we had to put in army lists before the event so it seems kind of pointless going to a tournament where I'm on minus points before I even start!

Nope. All the timings remain the same.  :)

Parking is quite good near the venue but can be difficult to spot.
Just opposite is an Army Surplus shop called Marcross Stores. You can park in behind here (entrance to the right) as there are some allocated spots for Fitfirm Gym, which belongs to the same owner as the Venue.

There's also quite a lot of parking at the end of Hotwells road, behind and around the Rose of Denmark pub.
The streets to look for are Charles Place, Little Caroline Place and Oldfield Place.

We're looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow.

Don't forget the tireless work of Hymirl and Poppy behind the scenes.

I've been entertaining Benis, so thought it might be nice not to stick my nose into a computer all day.

I had an enjoyable day too, 4 very enjoyable games, the first time I've played against Valar and Benis! and despite killing a tau super battlesuit in hand to hand I think I'll stick with my plan to shelve the sisters of battle for a few years. Been missing my biker marines too much!

Again our apologies for the spreadsheet glitch that seems to have muddled things at the end of the day, I hope no-one felt their day was adversely effected by it.

A good day indeed and nice to see and play Killing Time and Hymirl for the first time even though Killing Times serpents destroed all my Boyz with constant rolling of 6's for his serpent shields, and Hymirl's Burny Burny sisters of doom with flamers everywhere!!!

Great tables, great games and great club.  Shame its a 5 hour round trip for me or I'd be there much more often!!

The computer glitch was a pain.
Still not sure what happened, but next time we'll keep a paper trail to make sure no-one gets hard done by.
Poppy was quite upset, but as long as people got to push their toys around in a happy manner I fail to see that any major harm was done.

Thanks for the great day. :)

She shouldn't be upset. It wasn't her fault. Plus we all saw how many points we had compared to those around us.

While I wasn't involved, I'm curious as to the top teir contestants, and more importantly their Armies and Strategies!

I put in a request for anyone that finished in the top 25% to post their lists, with a quick summary of how the list plays and if there's any "super secret tech" involved with playing it. :)

Hey GBT, I came 3rd overall and took this Necron list:

Quote
Nemesor Zahndrekh

Royal Court
2x Necron Lord, Resurrection Orb

Triarch Stalker

Triarch Stalker

Triarch Stalker

10 Necron Immortals
Tesla carbines

10 Necron Immortals
Tesla carbines
+Night Scythe

10 Necron Immortals
Tesla carbines
+Night Scythe

Annihilation Barge
Gauss cannons

Annihilation Barge
Gauss cannons

Annihilation Barge
Gauss cannons

Total - 1745

I tend to use this list aggressively with the Annihilation Barges and Triarch Stalkers moving forward in pairs as fast as they can. In a perfect world, the Stalkers take out tanks and then their paired Barge fries the troops that get out. With no tanks then the Stalkers target infantry units so that the Immortals can gain twin-linked.
They also screen Zahndrekh and his unit of Immortals, letting him grab objectives.
The other two Immortal units are joined by Court Lords which come in from reserve in the Nightscythes. Again, these are pretty aggressive and will power forward 24" from the board edge- Immortals get out and move forward to set up a beach head for the advancing units. If possible these guys come in on a flank so that the 'Scythes can get another turn on the board at least before leaving the battlefield.

Generally a wall of AV13 is pretty scary and pretty difficult to get through- this lets me move my scoring units around behind the wall and grab objectives and offer supporting fire.
The sheer amount of shots this army can put out with all the tesla is pretty damn scary too! :D

Thanks, Lorizael!

I don't want to clutter this thread with questions about the list, do you mind if I cut and paste it over to the Necron board, and ask a couple questions? I can only think of one Necron player at my GW, and I never have a chance to play her.

Yes, the rare army of my store is played by the even more rare, "Lady Gamer". ;)

I still envy you for having a store that lets you play games.

For many years, I couldn't!  For a long time, my GW had requirements for models to be this number of colours, some kind of basing... it just wound up with people playing poorly painted models, no detail work, with uncoloured sand glued to bases. They wised up, and let people play with bare plastic if they wanted. Model sales went up, and those models started getting painted slowly, but well. It lost much of the elitist atmosphere where "new players" couldn't play there, because their armies weren't up to snuff.

I'm lucky to have the store I do. I hope you find a club, or that a store opens up.

How'd you do? Where's your list? ;)

@Lorizael: Thanks! List and questions are posted!

Well, I'm so annoyed that meatspace kind of spiralled out of control before being able to secure a place to come. I'd even taken time out to whoop-ass -V- a few times with varying test lists but ultimately starting up my own business and taking care of initial clients had to come first.

It seems like the dice gods are against me going to play with the Vanguard!

I want to see some pictures please!!!
