From Fantasy to 40k help pick a flufftastic army please.
« on: March 14, 2014, 06:56:32 AM »
I have had a few 40k models but never actually played the game itself. I have narrowed it down to mostly marine armies because I like the fluff the best. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are a few reasons why I like each, maybe some of you could straighten me out and tell me what you think. I tend to like armies that originated from a primarch, the fluff inspires me. I am a competitive person but really just want a good all around army. Nothing OP or FOTM just an army that can adapt and keep me with a chance of winning the game.

GK
-Love the new terminators one of the best models in the game imo.
-They have settled down, I won't be a band wagoner.
-Fluff not much that I know.

SW
-Seem like a great all around army.
-Vikings!
-Great models.
-New Horus is beginning to be converted.

RG
-Love their stealth tactics
-Fluff is great.
-It would be awesome to have a new imperial knight with a Raven Head on it!
-Fast play style which I like.

Alpha Legion for honorable mention because I love their fluff and how they maybe good or bad.

Welcome to 40K! I've been a 40K player for almost a decade now, and only recently have I begun to foray into Fantasy in the spirit of being challenged by the game. I can see you are in the 'fluffy but competitive' category which is similar to the way I think and have thought for a while.  Allow me to bestow what advice I can.

Grey Knights are a bit of an older army now but they are still pretty effective, especially when you consider how easily they get access to Divination psychic powers (by far the best school in the game, followed by Telepathy then Biomancy). Unlike Fantasy you can easily get off multiple Psychic Powers a turn without your opponent having any way of cancelling them and Grey Knights are the epitome of this - every squad and character (with some exceptions) has access to Psychic Powers which have a wide variety of effects ranging from increased strength in CC to Pie Plates.

In 40K Troops are a lot more important then Core are in Fantasy because only Troops are capable of holding objectives which in the majority of mission types is pretty vital.  40K has no points restrictions in each category because of this fact - if you skimp on the Troops you will lose a lot of the time.

In the case of Grey Knights, many of their special characters are good because they allow you to take certain Elites choices as Troops which makes them that much better.  Key examples of this are Kaldor Draigo making Paladins Troops (essentially super Terminators) and Castellan Crowe making Purifiers Troops (elite GKs with an anti horde spell)

If you choose Grey Knights however, know that they have a pretty high price per model value, so every model you lose is that much more hurtful to your overall strategy.  That and GK tend to rely on lots of shots to kill their enemies rather then a few really good shots. Playing GK, more often then not you'll end up cursing the dice as you don't roll nearly enough 6s to Rend.

I'll talk about the other two choices in more detail later when I return from class :)

Of the three you selected, I'd say Raven Guard are probably your best bet. Space Wolves and Grey Knights each have their strengths, but they're really specialist armies and there are significant challenges to playing them well. If you go pure Grey Knights, you wind up with a low model count with very elite troops, which can be very problematic for a new player. Space Wolves, from what I've seen, are suffering from a lot of growing pains going from 5th to 6th edition and, while they can work, aren't quite the powerhouses they once were.

Raven Guard, meanwhile, have a brand new codex, a wide model range, and a lot of tactical flexibility. For a new player, I'd nudge you that direction. That said, I'll say what I usually say to new players trying to pick an army: pick the one whose models you think are the coolest. You're going to be spending a fair amount of money and time on these little things, and so loving the models makes the hobby a lot more fun.

Thanks for all of the info so far! I am leaning towards the RG but I do not wish to discount the SW because of the older codex. I know they are a really popular army and will get the love they need eventually. I do not know enough of the GK fluff to pull me in like I do with the SW and the RG it is all about the GK models. This makes me lean toward the other two armies. However, the RG have cool tactics, cool models, and cool fluff. SW have great models, good flexibility, and good fluff. (I like that the SW are one of the factions similar to the salamanders who tried to save people even though the emperor said do whatever it takes to kill the enemy, even if it means killing innocent people.)

It is really a toss up and the only reason I am leaning toward the RG is that they can make a quick army with bikes, speeders, and assault squads. Secondly, with the rumors of a new edition or a revision of one I think that melee with get a slight buff of some sort and I think that would help RG over SW. I feel like shooting is definitely the way to go at the moment and is almost too good. (By what I see, read, and hear.)
